It had been one of those mornings.
Twyla had woken up late, causing her entire schedule to be thrown off. Usually she woke up at 5:30, got dressed for a run/jog that lasted between twenty and thirty minutes, ran until 6:00, showered and got ready (usually taking her about forty-five minutes), and then went down to the dinning room for breakfast and any (if it happened to be a school day) homework that was neglected the night before. This particular morning she unintentionally slept in until 6:00, causing her to rush through getting ready and eating breakfast. As if throwing off her entire schedule hadn’t been enough of a stressor, the battery of the white zune holding all of the Pat Benatar songs Koga had put on it for her had failed to last her entire run. It just stopped playing in the middle of ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’, one of her particular favorites by the 80's songstress. Plus, lets not forget the ugly bruise that was blooming on her left knee–a battle scar from getting in a fight with the carpet near the front door. What Twyla really wanted to do was crawl back into bed and sleep, but of course, she had to have plans on this particular Saturday.
Her morning had put her in a very irritable mood that was only made worse when she rushed down to the danger room only to realize that all her earlier rushing had made her early for her training session with Shin, who had agreed to help her learn some self-defense. Twyla grumbled to herself as she laced up her jazz sneakers. All her stressing out and she was early. She looked up petulantly at the ceiling when she was finished with the black shoes. Really?
She had been unsure that morning what would be most appropriate for this kind of training. She knew what to wear for gymnastics and she knew what to wear for dance so she had kinda mashed the two ideas together in her clothing choices. A pair of Soffe shorts were layered over her green leotard which also rested under an oversized grey hoodie. Her leotard was something she always felt comfortable in and it gave her better mobility than her other athletic clothes but just in case it was terribly inappropriate, the hoodie covered up any possible blunder...even if it almost totally covered up her black shorts. The dance shoes had been an afterthought after she realized that she probably shouldn’t go barefoot. The sneakers would possibly be helpful, they were light and allowed her to flex her feet, which was important when she wore them for dance team and could turn out to be important for whatever sort of training she had in store for her.
Currently, the sneakers were acting as a mood lightener–they made her want to dance which made her want to be happy. Twyla scrambled up from her sprawling position on the floor and loosened her legs a bit before drawing her right leg out and then back in preparation for a sudden spin that was landed with a smile. Soon after a double and then a triple followed. These moves were easier to regain than her more complicated gymnastic maneuvers. A deep stretch came next in preparation for a move that had been the bane of her existence her freshman year. 5,6,7,8. She silently counted herself off. 1. This was the first count for prep. Twyla pulled in her arms and pushed up with her toes for added lift. 2. The second prep count that she used to bend her legs. 3. Arms and legs were out and parallel to each other. 4. The landing. It would have been as perfect a toe touch as Twyla could do--had she remembered her facials. With a sigh and a smile she re-did the move, but this time with a smile for 1 and 2, and an opened mouth grin for 3 and 4. A glance at a clock in the hallway told her that she had eaten up whatever time she had and that her teacher would be arriving soon. Her mood was improved greatly, which would be a blessing for anyone who had to deal with her that day.

Today was just one of those days.
One of those... really good days when you slept in late because your shift at the book store was later in the day. Where you were free to laze about the lounge area of the mansion, watch all the morning soap operas, become vegetation, and the only real chore you felt compelled to do was walk the dog. A thoroughly relaxing laid back morning that compelled one to ask the really big questions in life; who am I? Why am I here? What am I doing in life that prevents me from taking a shower for 20 minutes, just standing under the hot stream of water and yawning? Oh, and something something, digital watches.
Yes, life, the universe, everything... and the connective tissues of reality. Pondered peril-lessly from beneath the cotton of Shin's comforter (that he'd climbed back into for the second time that morn). It all compounded to a morning that'd make certain people very jealous.
Which reminded Shin. He rolled over to blearily glance at the digital clock on his bedside table through his bangs. A breath of air blew a few strands away from his face as he leaned on his pillow. His oh-so-comfortable pillow, under bed sheets warm and cozy, spread in disarray all around him like a burrow. He had somewhere to be. Because he'd scheduled the first training session with Twyla in the Danger Room this morning. And that was the reason why he'd had such a leisurely morning. So, in effect, he was late for the meeting with the bountiful goddess that had granted him reasoning to support his time off.
The pillow sprang off the corner of the bed as Shin shot up. That simply would not do.
Laces tore through black/white Nikes as Shin bent forward in a feral swoop of motion. First came shoes, then socks, then pants, then off with shoes and off with socks and on with socks again, then then pants, then shoes again. He pulled a blue tank top over his head, twisted a Neapolitan sweat band onto his left wrist, and was done.
Out the door. On his way.
Not wearing a digital watch.

As he approached the danger room, Shin noted the girl spinning gracefully in the hallway outside the locked Danger Room. She was early.
More importantly, he wasn't late. Shin was silent a moment, as he watched her dance.
A subtle cough. Shin waved. "Good morning." He walked up to the security panel on the wall to punch in a code. It only took a moment. The doors to the Danger Room opened. Shin walked in.
As he approached another panel on the Danger Room wall, Shin ran through the goal of the day in his mind. Today was a lesson in the basics of jujitsu. No major moves would be taught. Those would come later. What would come now would be the premise of the martial art, as well as some extraneous tidbits of self defense knowhow he'd toss in along the way. A quick rundown of the basics, some displays in practical application, and then he'd start up a simulation. He pressed a few buttons on the panel, and a blue training mat spread out across the floor. Shin walked over and began to stretch.
"I hope you're ready for a workout," he smirked at Twyla as he bent forwards, stretching out his right leg. "I just woke up ten minutes ago. I know I am."

A sudden cough that hadn’t come from her own throat startled Twyla and she spun around, although not in the pretty way she had before, to catch the greeting of Tetsuya Shinbo. Good morning? Maybe, maybe not. So far not so good. Instead of attacking the contradiction in his greeting she replied with a non-aggressive “Hi.”It wasn’t in her usual bright tone but if was friendly enough. He punched something in on the keyboard near the door and it opened to the Danger Room. A few more buttons were pressed once he walked inside and a mat appeared on the floor of the interesting room. "I hope you're ready for a workout," The smirk he gave her told her that it was indeed not a good morning and that she should go back to bed but instead she followed him onto the blue mat.
“Oh I am so ready.” She replied with a tone of confidence that she only half felt. Stretching looked like a good idea so Twyla began to run through some of the stretches she would do before dance practices. A few reaches across her body to loosen her shoulders and then Twyla was sitting on the mat so that she could do a staddle stretch on each side. Her right leg was easy, she could still touch her head to her knee on that side, but the bruise on her left knee protested being stretched out. She winced when her forehead hit the tender spot and sat up after only a few seconds. The true test of her knee would come next. Standing up she slowly, very slowly, lowered herself into the front splits. Bruise or no bruise she completed the move without much hindrance and moved into a cross legged position.
“So,” She began after she completed her stretching routine. “Where do we start?” Her usual bright tone had returned, and although the rest of the morning hadn’t been forgotten, Twyla was ready to learn whatever it was that she was about to be taught.

Shin rose from the mat as he finished the last of his stretches, and turned to Twyla. He raised a teaching finger and began his spiel.
"We begin in feudal Japan, the point of origin for my favorite style of martial art: Jujitsu."
"Jujitsu evolved as a way to combat armed and armored opponents without weapons, gaining it the name 'the art of softness'. Since against armored opponents, basic fist strikes and kicks would be relatively useless, jujitsu aims to neutralize enemies through the use of pins, joint locks, and throws." Shin smirked and clasped his hands behind his back. "This martial art is built around using an attacker''s own energy against them. Because of this, jujitsu is an incredibly efficient method of takedown for those lacking extreme force. Through finesse and timing, they can use an attacker's energy, and their very own body, against them. I'll give you an example."
Shin took a step towards the center of the blue mat, and announced to the Danger Room computer 'Dummy'. A tan humanoid dropped from the ceiling to land neatly on the floor.
Shin leaned on its back, putting his full weight across it using his gut. Legs moved to keep the dummy's legs in place. Shin gripped the arm at just the right places, and pulled back, putting pressure on the joint. "This is one such method jujitsu users employ. A joint lock. You see, people can only take so much pressure on a joint before they become unable to resist... and." He pulled harder. "That's a very good non-violent way to stop an attacker in their tracks." Shin let go of the arm. The dummy slumped forward as he sprang back to his feet. He clapped his hands together, dusting them off as his focus returned to Twyla. "If you're dealing with violent individuals in a setting where a stronger takedown technique would be frowned upon, this method of self defense is extremely useful. Say, you need to restrain an incensed human at an anti-mutant rally? Bang. Done."
Shin glanced at the ceiling again. "Computer, have the dummy attack me."
The tan humanoid rose again mechanically, and rushed towards Shin to grab his shirt. His right arm rose, readying a punch. Shin's right arm shot forward to push the side of the dummy's head, blocking the arm. He gripped the wrist, then he rolled his arm to strike the dummy's grabbing arm near the elbow, taking him down into an arm grab. Shin held the arm back for a second, then released.
"See, there I used the attacker's energy against them. I blocked their punch, and brought them down with a strike to a joint."
Shin paused, thinking what to talk about next. This was one of the first times he'd tried teaching jujitsu. With Kasumi, he'd mainly taught her boxing moves. How to keep an opponent off-balance with punches, leg placement, movement. This was his first teaching gig with Twyla. Hmm.
"I won't be showing you how to do many moves today, Twyla, but I will be showing you what I know about self defense. Do you have any questions so far?"

Twyla listened attentive to Shin’s synopsis of the history of jujitsu. It was interesting, to say the least and she tried to open the pores in her brain so that she could soak of the knowledge like a sponge. That little thought tangent brought her focus away for a moment in which she missed an entire sentence. Promptly after, the decision was made to just listen and to not try any sort of mental osmosis. “... jujitsu is an incredibly efficient method of takedown for those lacking extreme force.” Perfect. Twyla was officially lacking in the ‘extreme force’ department. Maybe if she was built more like her brother Nate and had practiced in some kind of contact sport ‘extreme force’ wouldn’t sound so daunting, softness she could handle ...hopefully.
He proceeded to give her an example of what he called a joint lock. It made sense that something like that would be very useful in a situation like the one he described–it could nullify a threat without any intense bodily harm and intense bodily harm never really looked good in the newspapers. The application for the move itself made sense to her, but if he had asked her to demonstrate it...she would have been at a loss. It took Twyla watching something a few times to get it down, something that had annoyed her dance team coach to no end. ‘I can’t show it to you again, Twyla, you’re just gonna have to pick it up on your own.’ Twyla could still hear Jess’s frustrated voice ringing in her head.
Her attention was recaptured when the dummy that had been summoned from (actually, Twyla had no idea how the computer had magically created a dummy)...somewhere attempted to punch her instructor. Her instructor managed not only to deflect the blow but to also neutralize the dummy. Whoa, and she was supposed to learn how to do that? Seeing it in action, Twyla decided that even a watered down version of jujitsu had to be hard. Her sudden fears were calmed when he said he wouldn’t be teaching her anything like that today. Good, she had a lot of reading up to do before their next lesson. Hopefully what he knew about self defense would look a bit easier.
“Um,” She racked her brains for anything that had confused her during his explanation and demonstrations. And then she remembered: he had mentioned something about using throws to neutralize an opponent. This had given Twyla images of tackles from football and the flippy-things guys in wrestling did to each other. These were not images that instilled confidence in the teenage girl. “What did you mean when you mentioned throws? I have my own idea of what throwing someone is, but what does it mean for this?”

Shin paused, scratching his chin. "That's a bit hard to describe... I guess I'd describe a throw in jujitsu as one of the more complex ways to deal with an opponent. Some throws are made to use your weight against an opponent. Others are made to use your opponent's weight against them. Still, others are made to use the makeup of a body and maximize potential..." Shin paused, and looked at the dummy. He walked over and shifted it, so it had a hand over his back as if it were attacking him from behind.
"Picture, if you will, a man rushing at you. Perhaps like this." Shin's grip on the dummy's hand tightened. The dummy blinked its glassy red eyes. "With the type of throw I'm demonstrating here, I use the basic mechanics of my body to lift," He jerked the dummy up off the ground a little, continuing the motion up and over his shoulder. "the opponent over my shoulder like a fulcrum. My body acts like a wedge, allowing me to move that which I normally wouldn't be able to lift... up and over my shoulder like that." The body hit the floor. Shin let go of it, and took a step away, stretching his arms.
"Most of the throws in jujitsu, and also judo, utilize grappling rather than, say..." Shin looked towards the ceiling and thought a moment. "Brute force tosses like a wrestler uses when they swing their opponent around by the arm, and let them go stumbling straight into the ropes. ... Not to say that that wouldn't be a worthwhile throw. Some good throws use the art of misdirection, alongside some quick footwork, to sidestep an incoming assault, grab an arm, trip a leg, or take hold of the 'gi', or 'shirt area' of an opponent, and use that to take them to the floor."
"In jujitsu, there are five major arts one needs to learn. The first is the 'art of blocking'. You saw a bit of that when I countered a punch from the dummy with my arm. I stopped it from hitting my head, absorbing it with a limb instead. I'll show you that in upcoming sessions."
Shin paused.
"The second is the art of the fulcrum throw. Basically, using your body to pivot an opponent to the ground."
"After that, there's the non-fulcrum throw. Those throws are a bit more tricky, and involve very little contact with the opponent."
"The fourth is the art of escaping... it's crucial in many forms of jujitsu, because if you enter a grapple, it makes sense you'll want to know how to maneuver within it, and get out of it."
"The fifth is the art of striking. Self-explanatory." Shin said.
"But finally, before any of that gets taught, I have to teach you one key thing. This thing, I'm sure you may have been trained in during your time with gymnastics. This skill goes hand-in-hand. Twyla," Shin paused. "You have to learn to fall."

There were a LOT of different types of throws apparently...but that was a good thing, right? Only knowing one thing probably wouldn’t help much in every situation. It’d be like trying to fit the same dance moves in with different songs–it’d be impossible to do a half-decent toe touch to a slow ballad just like it would be to do a triple spin in four counts. It seemed to Twyla liked she’d signed up to learn the basics of something intensely complicated but she didn’t regret her decision, jujitsu seemed like it would be something that (after an incredible amount of work) would be a good fit for her.
Brown eyes watched curiously as Shin lifted the dummy over his shoulder and deposited it with a quiet thud on the mat; ‘that which I normally wouldn't be able to lift’ sounded like relief to Twyla’s hesitance. The jujitsu throw didn’t look very football at all. This was good, very good in fact because when Twyla played football with her cousins she played wide receiver (or if her sisters other than Liza) were playing quarterback (Miranda and Jeanie couldn’t throw a football to save their lives). The position of offensive tackle was reserved for her older brother Nate and Jonathan always played running back because he was a speed demon. No throwing peole out of the way of the football for Twyla, no way sir.
Twyla picked at a piece of rubber on her sneaker without taking her eyes off the speaker as he continued to talk about throws. Lots and lots of different things to remember. Maybe she should have brought a notebook or something? Twyla instantly regretted not thinking of something like that. Although, based on the technology she had seen she could probably get a tape of this session from someone. A mental post-it-note was made to check out as many books on jujitsu from the Mansion’s library as soon as possible and then was stuck onto the bulletin board of her psyche.
Blocking, fulcrum, non-fulcrum, escaping, striking. Blocking...striking, fulcrum...non-fulcrum, blocking-no...escaping. Blocking, fulcrum, non-fulcrum, escaping, striking. A silent mantra in the absence of a pen and paper. Information from this first session would be very good to remember, considering these were the building blocks that she was starting with.
Ears perked up at the word ‘gymnastics’ like they always did and always had since she was very small. Twyla tried to fill in the blank of what Shin would say next. Her guess wasn’t even close, so there’s no use in mentioning it here. Falling. Falling she could do, having fallen her entire life. Shin was totally right–falling was very important in gymnastics. One nasty spill off the uneven bars and that was it, game over, sorry about your spinal cord but there’s not much we can do about it. Some of the basics she remembered from the video her coach played every year spewed from her brain and out her mouth as if she was on auto-pilot.
“Don’t lock up, limbs before head, don’t fight the fall, don’t land on your hands, protect your face, try to land on your side...”She rifled through her mind for anything else she could remember. “Try to land on all mat or all floor but mat is best, especially on a sprung floor....because half and half really hurts and you could hurt your neck.” A slight shudder went through her as she remembered watching a girl trip during a floor exercise. The girl landed with her neck on the edge of the sprung floor and had to go to the hospital. Thankfully, she had been okay--even if her mother refused to let her do gymnastics anymore. “It’s probably not the same thing, is it?” She asked from her position on the floor as she quirked her lips in a thoughtful gesture.

Shin nodded. "Not quite, but close. You've got the basic language down. That's good." Shin smiled. He'd expected as much. Falling in gymnastics, as everyone always enthused, was important. In martial arts, it was important too!
"Various martial arts use a style of falling some call 'ukemi'. Aikido, jujitsu, judo... it's something to practice. It takes a while to learn. It's also kind of dangerous. If you do the fall wrong, you might hurt yourself. That's why we'll be practicing basic falls on the mat." Shin paused. He folded his hands in front of himself seriously. "As we get better with this, we'll want to learn to fall on harder things. To quote my old master, "Knowing how to fall on concrete is arguably the most practical skill one can develop through martial arts training." Because you'll fall some time eventually. It's good to be prepared."
Shin recalled all the times he'd hurt himself in practice, all those times he'd looked up at his master from the floor. He recalled them in startling detail, actually. Among them were mixed faint visuals of the same thing, from another perspective... with him as the teacher.
He hardly remembered when that had been. When exactly those memories had come to him, Shin didn't know. Maybe they were dreams? Dreams he remembered vividly at times. Dreams his body had a physical memory of... dreams...
Shin mentally shook himself out of the daydream, and continued. "One of the first falls I'll teach is the basic roll." From the basic roll, other falls evolved. It was a good starting point before the more complex things, and it could be done on a mat.
Shin took a step back, then linked his arms and moved forward to demonstrate a basic roll. He came up out of it with his arms raised in a guarding posture, then glanced to Twyla. "We'll practice that a few times today. Look fun?"

It made sense that falling in gymnastics wouldn’t be the same thing as falling in martial arts. If Twyla fell off the uneven bars during a routine her main goal would be to not get hurt...actually it would probably have been finding a way to save the routine if she was being judged. If Twyla was practicing a routine and she fell from the uneven bars she would be focused on not getting hurt. If she was trying to defend herself and she fell it would make more sense to find a way to fall so that she could bounce back and keep defending herself. Decidedly a different mind set considering when she fell during practices (and she’d fallen quite a lot in her gymnastic career) she could lie on the mat until she recovered (she’d spent a lot of time lying prostrate on the floor waiting for her breath to come back). Twyla wasn’t an expert on fighting but she was pretty sure that even when she was tearing around the house playing Nerf war with her brothers neither of them had shown her mercy when she’d taken a digger off the back of the couch and twisted her ankle--It made sense that the first thing she’d learn how to do would be to fall.
Ukemi. Twyla repeated the word in her head several times so that she would know what to look up when she made her next trip to the library. This was more important information and the girl tried her hardest to focus on every word that was being said to her. She was glad that this is what she was learning first and that it sounded like she’d gradually move up to the practical uses of ukemi. Like Shin said, it was good to be prepared.
Brown eyes observed with interest as what she assumed was a basic roll was demonstrated.
Yep. That was definitely not a somersault, which had been her first image at the word ‘roll’. She was definitely starting out with a blank slate. Hopefully her dance and gymnastics habits wouldn’t inhibit her learning.
From her spot on the floor Twyla raised herself into a standing position and turned to her teacher with a smile. “Looks very fun.” It really did, the idea of learning a move reminded her of dance practices and dance practices were always fun. "Alright, Twyla. Follow my demonstrations, and we'll practice a few rolls." Shin began with a smile. Shin brought his arms up before him, drawing in his focus, then moved forwards in a slowed-down demonstration of the roll. As he got to his feet, Shin turned to her, and took a few spacing steps.
"Repeat."
The goal here was to have her get her form down. Shin would watch, and tell her any things she'd done wrong.

“Okay.” Twyla watched as Shin demonstrated the roll again. It didn’t look too difficult, she’d probably done things just as complicated in a few dance routines. She attempted to copy the way her teacher positioned his arms and she managed to keep them in a similar pose until it was actually time to lean forward and roll. As soon as her head neared the mat Twyla’s brain went on auto pilot and she put her arms out. The back of her neck touched the mat and her hips flipped up over her head. It was a perfectly acceptable somersault, but a decidedly terrible roll.
Her cheeks flushed and Twyla quickly pulled her arms back down from the ‘stick it’ position that they were quickly heading for. “Sorry. Uh, how about I try that again.” She took a few steps back to her original spot on the mat and attempted the move again, this time focusing most of her energy on her arm placement. She had no idea how she looked, if she had to guess she would have said that whatever flop thing she had done on the mat was sloppy– but at least it wasn’t a somersault.

Her first attempt was not unlike so many other first attempts Shin had witnessed in his training, in that it was done wrong, while hands gesticulated in a fervent hope to match the positioning right. Like other first attempts, it ended in a somersault. That hadn't been the aim of the exercise. That wasn't the correct way to fall. Shin held his chin, taking in her first attempt.
It wasn't bad, though. She hadn't fallen on her face like he had. There was potential.
>>“Sorry. Uh, how about I try that again.”
Shin nodded understandingly. "Please do."
Her second attempt was better. More flopsy, but better. Shin stepped forward. "It's an improvement," he stated. "Watch me do it again, and try to match my moves." Again, he demonstrated slowly. Afterwards, Shin took a few steps away, and crossed his arms. "Try that a few hundred times today. Repetition helps prevent faceplants."
((OOC note: A few hundred times later... Feel free to write up a time skip training montage. We can wrap this thread up soon, with Shin's suggestion to meet back next week for more training.))

Attempt number three was swiftly followed by four, five, six and so forth until about number twenty seven after which Twyla took a short break and watched another demonstration becuase she was still doing it wrong. By attempt thirty six the comments regarding her form were getting more diverse and by number sixty eight the criticism had reverted to a simple ‘Again’ that was either coupled with a ‘Good’ or nothing at all. One hundred came and went but by one hundred and fifteen Twyla was extremely annoyed with the exercise and it showed in her sloppy performance. By two hundred and seventy she caught her grove back and besides being tired and a little sore her falls were largely improved from her first attempts. They of course were still not perfect, but sometimes practicing was like blowing up a balloon, the biggest changes happened in the beginning.
Her arms felt weird and her back was a little sore for some reason but the girl felt content and vaguely proud of herself–the competitive part of her want angry that she was instantly good at the ukemi. The content feeling showed in her half-dazed smile. “Um...I don’t know how many more times I can do that...” She slowly blinked a few times and waited for her teacher to give her the next instructions.

Shin exaggerated a nod. "That's fine. You've done enough for today. Take your break. You've earned it." He went over to the danger room's wall panel, and pressed some buttons, dismissing the mats. After they'd vanished, Shin turned back towards Twyla with a question. "Can we do some more practice next Wednesday? I'd like to set up a 'training session' at least once a week to continue your education. Jujitsu doesn't teach itself."
He'd have to check his schedule, of course, but once a week didn't seem that harsh. "And do you jog? It... might be a good idea to start. Increases cardiovascular health and all that." Physical training took diligence, and helped with it too. It wasn't the worst idea to train to keep up.

Wheee! No more rolling...at least not for that day apparently. When Shin returned from messing with the magic panel in the wall that made the mats disappear he asked her if they could meet again the next Wednesday for more practice. Twyla nodded enthusiastically, she was frustrated with herself but it was a bit of a rush to be learning something totally new, before replying: “Yeah, I could totally do that. Sounds like a plan.” ‘man’ usually went at the end of that phrase but somehow Twyla didn’t feel comfortable blurting that out to someone she’d just been listening to and following for the last...however long they’d been in the Danger Room.
To his next question she replied: “Yeah, I’ve been jogging since...” She trailed off as she tried to think of the general date. “A month after I got here I, think.” Blech. Twyla hated running with a fiery passion but after realizing how out of shape she’d gotten since leaving home she’d gotten her butt moving every morning. How fast it was moving depended on the day, but the girl had been getting better with her endurance even if her speed was still a bit lacking. Not that Twyla Ashby had ever been the fastest Ashby...or the fastest anything, really. Dance team over Track, really? She still lamented that fateful Freshman year choice.
