The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Agnes Nicholas sighed happily as she strolled through the New York Botanical Gardens. She had never before been to this place, even when she lived at home with her parents. Though it was just all plants and nothing, that she could see, was sinful about it, her mother had never taken her here. It was too educational, too scientific, and allowed (according to her mother) the wrong element into its doors (which could have been anyone). But not that Agnes was free from all that madness, she was only too happy to stroll by herself in the gardens, inspecting the various types of foliage and such and taking notes on a small pad of paper she had in her thin hands.
The eighteen-year old, dressed simply in jeans and a deep green sweater, continued on down the path of some trees, her sneakers crunching lightly on the loose rocks on the pathway as she did so. Her long dark hair bounced with her small steps while her crystal blue eyes followed every curve of petals, even scratch in the bark, and every point of grass. It was truly a beautiful sight.
She smirked silently to herself. She could see why her girlfriend Jasmine was so enamored with botany. Maybe it would be a good move for Agnes to get into this type of field. She did have an affinity for it and she was good at her part-time job working as the schools gardener. Maybe it was not so far-fetched…
Another contented sigh as he stepped over to a bed of flowers. Kneeling down, she began to jot down a few of the notes that were on a label near them. They offered a name as well as information about its natural environment that Agnes all wrote down. And as she did so, she noticed a small buzzing near her ear. Confused, she turned her head and watched as a ladybug suddenly took off from her shoulder and began to buzz around her head playfully.
She remembered when things like that used to irritate her to no end. But not that her powers were falling more and more under her control she didn’t mind them so much. As a matter of fact, half the time she was thankful for the company.
Gently she shook her head as she ladybug once again returned and landed on her notepad. It crawled about and she shook her head.
“Now, you know better than that,” she said as she shooed it off the paper. But the bug was adamant to stay. She chuckled and shook her head. “Fine, but don’t get in the way while I’m writing.”
She jotted another note as the ladybug crawled the corner of the notepad and seemed to pause there. She only smirked as she stood up and moved on to the next plant…
Nate was adjusting moderately well as a pet owner, considering he never had so much as a hamster when he was younger. The other variable was his pet being a mutant spider, of course. That proved to be the bigger issue originally, with Nate's unease around spiders some time to completely disappear. Once that issue was resolved however, Parker was a surprisingly easy to manage pet. The spider took commands very well and ate scraps of meat and stray bugs, which made him sustainable and kept the apartment pest-free.
One slight problem that still came up was taking Parker out for walks. Being so much bigger than a normal spider, being kept in the apartment must feel like being confined to a drawer for Parker, so Nate did his best to take the spider out for exercise and exploration, but a two-foot long spider garnered a lot of attention, which was Nate's kryptonite. The problem was usually remedied by wearing a hood and shades, coupled with the New York tradition of ignoring and avoiding weirdos.
On this day, he decided a change of scenery would be nice for his pet; crowded cement sidewalks did not seem very welcoming, and there was always the worry that some homeless guy would attempt to stomp on or eat Parker. Nate had not yet visited the botanical gardens, and skittering around a green area would be a nice change of pace.
Nate had purchased a leash for these walks; Parker was well behaved, but sometimes easily distracted. Nate held the loop and the end of the leash absentmindedly, enjoying the plants and flowers, brushing his free hand along leaves. Parker would find things within range to draw his attention, and it would be signaled to his owner by the light tug on the cord.
The trip seemed relatively relaxing until the spider's temperament shifted dramatically. Caught off guard, the leash was yanked out of Nate's hand, now trailing a determined Parker. Concerned by whatever could interest a giant spider so much, (with good reason, based on experience,) Nate ran after the pet. Parker may have had a headstart, but it was easy for the long-legged man to gain on the shuffling critter.
Parker turned a corner and both could now see what was drawing him; a girl was facing away from the two, captivated by whatever plants she was studying. Nate had no clue why this girl was so interesting to Parker, besides possibly his need for attention, but he had no desire to explain to a stranger why his monster spider assaulted her.
It seemed less likely that Nate would be able to catch up close enough to scoop up the sneaky spider, so he tried for the next best thing; he stomped his foot down on the trailing leash. Thankfully, it did not slip out, and Parker ran out of slack a few feet away from the innocent potential victim. Nate grabbed the leash and reeled his mischievous pet in, lightly placing a foot on the back of the warbling Parker. Realizing the event did not go unnoticed to the girl, he apologized, "I'm so sorry, he slipped away; he seemed dead set on meeting you," Nate joked lamely with a weak chuckle. "Sorry for the scare."
Agnes was having a fine time. She was relaxing, having just finished taking some notes on some exceptionally pretty flowers, and was making her way to the next exhibit. With her back turned to the walkway, she tilted her head as she read a plaque that was describing some of the various aspects of this tree. As she read silently to herself the ladybug that crawled on her notepad was quickly joined by another and the pair of them quietly continued to enjoy their free perching spot.
But while the young runaway stood there, observing the tree, she could have sworn that she felt like she was being watching. It wasn’t the ladybugs, she doesn’t get that kind of vibe from insects but still, there was a nagging feeling…
She turned and then nearly wanted to scream. Scurrying towards her was the biggest spider that she had ever seen in her life! Now Agnes was no stranger to creepy crawlies. After all her mutation turned her into a living bug nest with them living inside of her. But this still managed to slightly make her skin crawl. It wasn’t the amount of legs, or the large eyes, or anything like that. She had been near spiders before and she was fine. So it just had to be the sheer size of it.
Stepping back, Agnes bite her lip as she armed herself with her notepad. But…just before she ruined it…a man rounded the corner and quickly stomped on the leash that the spider dragged behind it. The arachnid seemed irritated with this, especially after the man placed his foot on top of it to keep it from squirming away.
She breathed a sigh of relief…
>> "I'm so sorry, he slipped away; he seemed dead set on meeting you…Sorry for the scare."
She sighed as she looked between the man and his spider curiously. The eighteen year old could only marvel at the idea that the man had this creature as a pet. AND that it had its own leash! Just watching it made her revulsion slowly shift into a chuckle and a confused smirk. She began to have an inkling as to why the spider was after her.
Gently she nudged the ladybugs onto her shoulder and took a couple steps forward.
“I-It’s okay,” she said with a relieved sigh as she saw the spider was adequately subdued. “He didn’t scare me that much. H-He really is your…pet? I…I don’t think I’ve ever seen a spider that big…”
He had to give the girl credit; what could have been a trainwreck of a situation was being downplayed as an awkward misunderstanding. She was sort of chuckling, despite feeling uncomfortable. There really were all kinds in New York. "Yeah... Parker is sort of a long story. To be honest, the long and short of it was that mutants were involved, and... well, now I have a pet spider," he rationalized with a weak laugh. What turns did his life take that led to a story like this being so casual. "My name's Nate, by the way." Just because the spider was going to be rude did not mean Nate had to be.
He bent down and picked up Parker, who was still squirming. Nate had no clue what the spider was so drawn to about the girl, but he was antsy, with fuzzy legs brushing against his arms, leading to a shudder and goosebumps. "He's been pretty harmless to people so far, which is why it's so weird that he's acting up." He gave brushed the spider's head with his knuckles to scold him. "Quit being rude, you brat."
Nate looked up from his pet to spot a red and black dot on the girl's shoulder. "Hey look, a ladybug! Idn't it good luck to have one of those land on you?"
Agnes just stood there, staring at this massive spider that still attempted to wiggle free from its master’s heavy foot. That spider certainly was intent on getting to her; which was odd to say the least. Not that having a giant spider for a pet was not weird in itself. It was simply that the spider looked as if it were under the control of her powers, but she could have sworn that her ability had no effect on arachnids. The last time when she was in the bug show, the majority of the spiders ignored her gifts. Maybe something was changing in her?
Or maybe the spider could just sense the plethora of insects that she had inside her body. It was very well possible that the spider was not trying to be friendly at all, but simply trying to get a free meal.
Whatever the case, Agnes was still slightly creeped out but she kept a strong face as she watched the stranger.
>> "Yeah... Parker is sort of a long story. To be honest, the long and short of it was that mutants were involved, and... well, now I have a pet spider…”
Mutants involved. Well…that would definitely explain the situation of Parker. She grinned. “Parker, heh, that’s a cute name.”
>> “…My name's Nate, by the way.”[/color][/i]
She nodded gratefully, still hugging her notepad to her chest. “Pleasure. My name’s Agnes. It’s nice to meet you, Nate…and even you, Parker,” she said with a smirk to the large arachnid who was now in the man’s arms.
>> "He's been pretty harmless to people so far, which is why it's so weird that he's acting up…Quit being rude, you brat."
Isn’t the spider’s fault. Agnes was understanding that more and more. Maybe it really was just after all the insects that were around her. It was quite possible that even though it was not affected by the pheromone she gave off, the spider could still smell it and wanted a meal.
She shifted a little and took a step forward, just to see how the spider reacted in the man’s arms. A simple experiment just to see if it was actually her. But as she stepped forward, she also came further into view of this man so it was no surprise that he spotted a couple of the…stowaways that were clinging onto her shoulder.
>> "Hey look, a ladybug! Idn't it good luck to have one of those land on you?"
Agnes paused and then remembered the ladybugs that were crawling on her shoulder absentmindedly. “Oh, heh, yeah, I remember hearing that. I guess it is my lucky day.” Then she sighed as she heard another buzzing..and then another…and then another…
At least six other ladybugs had flew over and landed delicately on her shoulders and began to sit comfortably as if she were little more than another flower. That was going to be hard to explain…
"Oh yeah, a mutant spider tried to tackle-hug you; best day ever," he teased with a wink. The girl was fairly pretty, but she seemed far too thin; poor girl looked like she barely ate. Nate shuddered; he was getting old when he started thinking about girls like a parent rather than a man.
Nate was relieved; his little scolding of Parker helped the spider understand that he was misbehaving, and he has stopped squirming around. "Ready to behave?" Cautiously, keeping a tight grip on the leash, Nate let Parker down. The spider, able to understand both language and punishment, perked up on his hindlegs and extending his forelegs, attempting an apology bow with a sympathetic warble.
"See? He's a sweetheart. So do you spend much of..." his voice trailed off a bit. In the time he took to take care of Parker, one lucky ladybug had become a squad of the insects. That was... unlikely? Suspicious? "So I couldn't help but notice the only ladybugs in the garden have picked you as a hangout spot. Does this happen to you often?" Nate had the sneaking suspicion it did, and it was quite possibly related in his mind the Parker's infatuation.
>> "Oh yeah, a mutant spider tried to tackle-hug you; best day ever…Ready to behave?"
Agnes had smirked at that comment. To be honest considering some of her luck if that was all that happened to her in a day then it could definitely be seeing as one of her best days. But she had seen the humor in his words so she could only giggle in response.
But it was after this that the squadron of ladybugs decided to descend upon her. She wanted to shoo them off before the man took too careful of a notice. One ladybug was fine, hey that was chance. But six, now going on seven was extremely unlikely. She was at a loss as to what she could really say if he caught it. So maybe she would have to shoo them. A gentle swipe of her hand, maybe? Just to gently give them to clue that they were not wanted?
Heh, really, how many times in her life had that been successful.
She was still arguing with herself as to what to do when she looked up to see that Nate had turned his attention onto her. And looked confused…
>> "See? He's a sweetheart. So do you spend much of...So I couldn't help but notice the only ladybugs in the garden have picked you as a hangout spot. Does this happen to you often?"
Agnes sighed. So much for trying to keep this a secret. Would he buy that may she really just had sweet smelling shampoo?
She looked at the man and tried to stammer her way out of it. In a world like this, mutants were pretty common place, but that did not mean that everyone was exactly understanding about them. They could just as easily turn at the drop of a hat, despite however nice they are in the beginning. So despite the fact that she was kind of caught red-handed, the runaway attempted to talk her way out of this one.
She sighed as another pair of them landed on her other shoulder. How many was this now, ten? Twelve? She mentally groaned and casually tried to shoo them off her clothes.
“Um, heh, it’s probably just my shampoo. The last time I let my roommate pick it out for me,” she said with a resolute tone…
The girl was either desperate or was praying he was easily fooled. He was a pretty bright bulb, and with close to a dozen ladybugs collecting on Agnes like a bouquet, he had a guess regarding the reason. Still, he could put himself in her shoes more than most, so he did not hold it against her.
He wanted to make the situation less anxious for her, so he chuckled at her response. "So your shampoo makes you smell like a flower or something?" He scanned around the botanical garden. "I see how that would make you stick out here."
It was true he should not think it was certain that he was right about Agnes, but Nate thought the odds were good enough to make the gamble. Nate stretched his shadow across the path and into the green. In the corner of his eye, he scanned around for any fallen flower, but it seemed the place was kept very carefully. There was a petal, which would have to do. The shadow lifted it from the ground and moved it closer to her. He thought of how exactly to out himself before thinking of something location-appropriate: the shadow emerged from the ground behind her, with a crooked trunk, branching out every which way. One branch extended just over Agnes, dropping the petal before her eyes. "And here I'd think they'd all go for one of them petals."
It was a gambit, and a bad one at that. There was no way that Agnes really expected a lame excuse like her “shampoo” to work in masking the reasoning for her powers. After all, shampoo was something that nearly everyone used every day. If that were truly they case then wouldn’t there be more than just her walking around with ladybugs clinging to them?
Another glance to her shoulders which she had attempted to clear and she saw that there were of course beginning to gather once more around her shoulders. It was not that they were heavy but she was trying to keep a low profile and being covered in ladybugs was definitely not going be one of those things easily looked over. But then again, maybe this guy really wasn’t that smart. Maybe he would be able to buy the fact that it was just shampoo.
>> "So your shampoo makes you smell like a flower or something? I see how that would make you stick out here."
Her eyebrows knit into a surprised expression. Okay, so maybe this man was not as stupid as she had hoped.
But as she stood there, attempting to stumble over her own words she watched something odd happen. The shadows on the ground began to extend, almost as if there was a light lowering behind Nate. As it grew longer and darker, Agnes quickly began to realize that this was not at all normal. Her brow arched, she gnawed briefly on her bottom lip as she watched the shadows climb further along until they began to pull back and shoot upward. Before her, she watched as the darkness sprang up and formed several branches, one of which held up a petal…
>> "And here I'd think they'd all go for one of them petals."
Agnes’ mouth hung open in surprise. Really…what could she say to that other than…
There was nothing like an honest reaction, and surprise usually guaranteed one. He smiled; in a self-indulgent way, he had always found his own abilities impressive, and with the new-found ability to show off in front of other mutants, he found pleasure in the positive reactions of others.
Nate did have to consider that the reason bugs were collecting her was not a mutation: maybe an experiment, or a weird coincidence, or something stranger. He did have to remember he was holding the leash to a mutant spider that had nothing to do with his mutation. Still; he had faith that the smart money was on mutant.
Nate allowed his shadow to slowly return to him, the shape returning to the ground. "Yup. So... now that I've been a little honest, think you can return the favor, sugar?"
Agnes was still at a loss for words as she watched the shadow pull away from her. She twirled the petal she had plucked from the shadowy branch carefully. It was real alright. Well, there was really no way that she could have imagined or viewed that mistakenly. No, this man really went out of his way to display for her his powers. So that meant that it was obvious that he didn’t buy her excuse that her shampoo caused the appearance of the ladybug swarm.
It was obvious that because he showed and telled and he was going to expect her to do the same…
>> "Yup. So... now that I've been a little honest, think you can return the favor, sugar?"
Her eye twitched…
Sugar?
Though it may have not been meant to be taken in such a way, if there was one thing that Agnes could not stand was to be condescended to. The man may have been nice but she did not appreciate such words to be used to describe herself. Where did he get off doing that? What right did he have? What, did he think just because he was a man that he had a right to sugar? What was next? Hunny? Sweetie? Babycakes?
She growled. She heard the same jeering and pickup lines far too many times when she was homeless. And she sure as hell was not going to fall for lines like that now.
Her fist clenched, Agnes arched her eyebrow and her lips were set into a tight line.
“What? You think you can impress me or something just because you showed me ‘yours’ first? I got something to tell you, I’m not into whatever this ‘penniless-country-singer-rogue’ look you’re trying to pull off here. And I’m definitely not your ‘sugar’,” she huffed angrily. Her eyes narrowed as she glared at him. “You get me?”
Even if such had not been the man’s intention, Agnes was now angry. His next move better be the right one unless he wanted to get a swarm of insects to the face…
Alright, Nate had taken a swing and it was a solid miss. He was not even in the batter's box, it would seem by the aggressive reply of the young woman. To make matters worse, he still had no idea of what her powers could entail. Angry women were dangerous enough without a wealth of unknown ammo.
It was time for tension diffusion, Nate hoped. "Woah, I get you. Believe me, I didn't mean anything by it; I'm still used to names like that being commonplace back home." Alright, so he had been away from home for a while, but it was true that everyone from waitresses to classmates to teachers used names like "sugar," "hun," and "darling" with great occurrence. "Still, I know what you mean and I'll cool it."
Penniless-country-singer-rogue? Was that really how he came off? Well, so two of the four were true, but he tried not to give the vagabond impression, and did every country boy sing or something?
Hoping that things had shifted from tense to just awkward, he asked, "So think I can ask about that mutation of yours? I am curious whether there's more to it than a beetle homing beacon."
Agnes was in a huff. She hated when she was spoken to like that and because of it a familiar buzzing could be heard resounding inside of her chest. The swarm was getting upset but as angry as they were getting, she managed to keep them subdued. She didn’t want to make a scene out in public and as much as she was irritated she doubted that the man truly deserved that. Being stupid was not enough of a reason to unleash the swarm. Now…if he tried anything stupid then definitely that would be a completely different case.
Her lips still set in a semi-angry look, she eyed the man…
>> "Woah, I get you. Believe me, I didn't mean anything by it; I'm still used to names like that being commonplace back home…Still, I know what you mean and I'll cool it."[/i]
She nodded. At least he wasn’t stupid and apologized. Though she was still hypersensitive to each of his movements and each word he uttered, Agnes had a feeling that maybe she just jumped down his throat for the wrong reason. It was just that hearing anyone condescend to her like that really just set her off. She could not stand it because it reminded far too much of her homeless days when she had to do everything possible to escape leering, disgusting men.
This guy started off nice enough. So she hoped that in the end he did not turn out like the rest of those freaks whom she also had to put in their places.
But so far he was already proving himself to not be like that. He apologized and warily she accepted it. Still though, she would have to keep an eye on him.
>> "So think I can ask about that mutation of yours? I am curious whether there's more to it than a beetle homing beacon."
She nodded. At least he was not pushing for his apology to be accepted.
“It is,” she said referring to her mutation. Her stance slowly loosened up from the tension and she took a calming breath. The ladybugs had returned, along this time with a couple of butterflies. It seemed that stressed states caused her pheromones to become more prominent with the bugs. She sighed. “My body, attracts bugs, of all kinds. Sometimes to protect me, sometimes just to keep me from my homework,” she said with a shrug. “Nothing special…”
Oh and bugs live inside me! she thought. He didn’t need to know everything about her…
It might be too early to say, but her posture loosened up a bit, which he took as good news. He had avoided making any real enemies in New York so far, and he would like to keep that tradition going.
Nate was not the only one who sensed the situation lightening, as the ladybugs returned, joined by butterflies. Despite some of the other bugs Agnes might attract, with the collection of fluttering butterflies was a peaceful little benefit.
"I'm beginning to learn that any mutation is special. Though it does explain my pet's affinity for you." Nate tugged on the leash as the spider was off to his side, spinning a web between two large plants. "He may not be an insect, but you probably made him think a buffet was in town."
>> "I'm beginning to learn that any mutation is special. Though it does explain my pet's affinity for you…He may not be an insect, but you probably made him think a buffet was in town."
Agnes tried not to. She really did. She wanted to keep strong and to hold her resolve that she was not a girl that could be easily bought, or that she easily forgot things. But as she stood there, attempting to remain strong, Nate’s last comment caused the fissure to appear.
It was a twitch only; a very subtle and calm one at that. As she looked between both him and spider off the side that was busy making itself a web between a couple of plants, she could not help but start to smile. His comment was so…wrong that Agnes could not help but smirk at the response and in her struggles to maintain her composure, she quickly descended into a fit of giggles.
That would definitely explain why the spider suddenly took an interest in her: because it caught a whiff that she was an all-you-can-eat buffet!
She covered her mouth in a futile attempt to look tough, snorted once…then again…then just giggled. Shaking her head she turned around as her shoulders began to quivering from her laughter. She was supposed to be mad, she knew that. But any semblance of it was quickly evaporating out the window…
The man had succeeded in making her laugh. That meant he was off the hook…for now…
