Stop Her! She Didn't Pay for those Hotdogs! (Muse)
Starvation and cold, those can drive people to do the most desperate of things. Standing across the street from the city mall, Agnes could not believe that she was doing this. But she could not help it. She was hungry. Now most would think it would be easier for her to have simply gone to steal food from a grocery store, but there was problem with that. Most of the ready to eat food was in the back and with as many cameras that are in the grocery, it would be harder for her to sneak her way back there and snatch something. Especially considering how she was dressed. With those factors in mind, Agnes focused her attention instead on the mall.
She sighed heavily as she tugged her cloak tighter around her. She hated taking it off, but if she tried to go in with it, she would be picked out in no time. It was very doubtful that fashion threads have strayed to the point that something like a patchwork cloak would be considered high fashion. Reluctantly she pulled it off, folded it carefully and slipped it inside her ever faith duffle bag.
Agnes Nicholas now stepped out of her alley. She was wear a dirt brown sweater, torn with holes in the elbows and dark smudge stains of some unknown substance across the back, faded blue jeans with the knees frayed through and dirty tennis shoes with the heel lifting off of at least one of them. Maybe she could pass for the typical teenager.
Really Agnes, the mall? she thought to herself. But it was the best option she could think of. The food court was close to the exits. All she needed was something anything to eat for right now to last her. A quick grab and run and nobody would be able to chase her for long. All she needed was to get back into the alleys. She could find her way to freedom in no time.
Still…there were a lot of people in the mall.
Swallowing her courage, Agnes took another step towards the entrance…then another…and another. She willed herself to look normal, to appear just like everyone else. It seemed to work because as she headed towards the doors, an elderly man was kind enough to open for it. She watched him closely, expecting some comment or ulterior motive the man merely smiled at tipped his hat to her.
Stumped, Agnes could only nod and reply with a curt, “Thanks,” and stepped in without a smile.
In order to keep people buying things, several factors needed to come into play. One of those was to always keep the customer happy and fed. That was the whole reason for a food court. So you could not have an excuse to go home and eat something. As long as food was provided, you would stay and eat your fill, then remember things you were sure you needed to buy. Whoever came up with the concept of the mall was certainly a crafty one.
Agnes sighed as she stood there, piercing blue eyes staring out across the scene. All the different food stuffs were provided. There was Mexican, Italian, Fast, Chinese, Desserts, Baked Goods, Hot Dogs, they had everything here. Unfortunately most of their food was behind plexiglass so that significantly narrowed down her options.
As she headed in, her apprehension and fear of being caught started the buzzing in her chest. It was weak still, so as long as she kept herself calm, she could contain it. While she moved through the tables, trying to pick out something she could steal from, she noticed that many people had simply abandoned their leftovers on trays, leaving them for custodial staff to take care of. People, always leaving their trash for someone else to clean up. Unfortunately that was something she learned from her recent life in the streets. People always expected to be cleaned up after.
Still….food was food. Casually Agnes unzipped her bag and as she stood by one of the trays that had a leftover pretzel on, she very subtly knocked it into her bag. That was at least something for now, but still, she needed something more. As she glanced about, she saw a sign that said “Wagner’s Wurst Wieners” and noted that there was nobody in line. The best part, one of their plexiglass sneeze guards was being replaced. There, out in the open was a tray of toasty looking hotdogs.
She could already feel her mouth watering. Before she knew it, she found her feet had carried her over, drool on the side of her lips. She calmly approached, ignored a child who cried about how bad she smelled and began to pace. She needed to be fast about this. A quick glance over to the exits and they were unguarded and there was beeline (no pun intended) straight through towards them. A quick handful and she could be gone before security could get scrabbled here.
Slowly she moved into the empty line, pretended to try and make her decision as she slid her plastic tray down the counter. She eyed the menu, as well as the smiling face of the person who waited to help her. But the second she came close, he caught of whiff of her and subtly backed away. Agnes ignored this, as well as the fly or two that now buzzed around her head. She ground her teeth. From her earlier panic the flies had started to come. She did not need more attention drawn to her!
“C-Can I help you, ugh, ma’am?” the boy asked, trying to be polite.
Agnes said nothing for a second but simply stared at him when she got to the section lacking the plexiglass barrier. Finally she pointed behind him towards something on the menu. “Ugh…can you tell me what comes with that?”
The second the boy turned, Agnes made her move. She snatched out real quick and grabbed a handful, four or five, of the roasting hot dog links. They burned her hand slightly but she did not care. It was food.
“HEY!” the boy yelled, having turned around just in time to see her stuffing them in her bag.
Damn, too soon! she growled as she turned and suddenly bolted.
"Stop her! She didn't pay for those hotdogs!" the boy yelled.
Her hopes were dashed. The second the boy yelled, that seemed to magically pull guards at the exits, all of which who had turned their attentions on her. Agnes cursed under her breath and did the only thing she could do…she ran the other way. She thin legs carried her fast as she dodged around people, knocked bags over and leapt over seeing-eye dogs. Inside her chest that buzzing had started again. She needed to calm down otherwise there would be no hiding. But until then she ran…ran as hard as she could until she turned a corner and casually, yet rushed, moved into one of the clothing stores. All she needed was a few second, a few seconds to catch her breath, calm down and wait for them to pass.
Agnes clutched onto her hot dog smelling bag and found her way behind one of the clothing racks, eyes darted out, staring at the doorway, hoping and praying the guards simply run by.
Sveta was seriously considering not going shopping ever again. Something always happens. Always. You get stuck in an elevator, you accidentally touch a mutant, you get kidnapped by the Order... just an average shopping trip in the life of one certain ex - Russian bride. Still, you can always try, right? Try to walk into a mall, buy some clothes, and walk out without any trouble? Is that really too much to ask for?...
She saw the girl the moment she walked in. She didn't look like she belonged there, and she looked like she'd been running; she smelled of a lot of things, and she looked scared. It felt like looking into a mirror. A mirror from three years ago.
Security guards ran past the door of the store. People turned to look. Two of the guards stopped and walked in.
Do not get involved in this. Do not get involved in this. Do not... Darn it, in various languages.
Before she knew it, Sveta grabbed the girl by the arm, and pulled her farther away from the entrance, forcing a smile.
"I have been waiting for you forever" she smiled at the girl "We need to pick clothes now. Come with me." That was all she said before she calmly walked with the girl to a changing room, and pushed her inside. Grabbing some clothes randomly from the nearest rack, she joined her in the booth, flashing a charming smile at a shop assistant that looked her way.
Great, Sveta. Excellent. Now what?

Somebody must has seen something or pointed towards the store, at least to give them suspicion enough to want to inspect the clothing store. She cursed under her breath as she tried to move her way backward, clutching onto her bag. Her meager possessions, would she ever see them again? Her comic book? Her violin? The one photograph she carried? Would they simply be lost forever to the ether of the universe after she gets hauled away to jail for stealing a few hotdogs? Or worse, would they send her back to her parents?
Then, she nearly squealed in surprised as a hand slipped into her arm and pulled her backwards. For a brief second she figured it had to be one of the guards. Maybe one had snuck up behind her to capture. She wanted to fight, but that would not help her case.
But as she was turned around, she saw the face of her assailant and looked at her in surprise.
>> "I have been waiting for you forever…We need to pick clothes now. Come with me."
For second Agnes wanted to protest, to tell this woman she had the wrong person, but as she was being rushed into the changing rooms, she saw the images of the guards disappear behind racks and racks of clothes. Before she knew it, she was thrust into a closed changing room and joined by her blond haired savior.
“W-What’re you doing?” she forced a whispered.
She did not like being in this enclosed a space. It reminded her too much of home, as well as the fact that being this close to someone meant that they could both smell and hear her. She got enough grief from passing people, she would hate to read or see people’s reactions while she was this close.
Because of the situation, the stress of running through the mall, of nearly being caught by security and now being this close to another person, that familiar buzzing started in her chest. Her insects were taking her increased heart rate and perspiration as a sign that she was in danger. Slowly they started up, the buzzing and crackling sound in her chest, almost deafening to her. She gently began to calm herself, trying to keep things quiet but with agitation came their need to defend her. She had to keep it from happening, so she pushed herself against the back of the wall and breathed as calmly as she could.
The she heard buzzing outside. A couple of flies and a wasp that had been flying through the mall were immediately attracted to her. They buzzed around, diving and attempting to cling onto her hair. Agnes did not bother to remove them. She simply pressed back and dared not look into the woman’s eyes who rescued.
“Thank you,” she finally muttered. A roach peeked out from a crack in the wall and slowly made its way over her shoe. “But please, just go. You don’t need to get arrested for helping someone who stole hotdogs. Just leave.” She said it as calmly as she could, trying to stop the deafening buzz in her chest from growing any louder.

"Shush." Sveta waved, peeking out from the changing booth; the guards walked around, but to tell the truth, they didn't seem all that interested. Certainly not interested enough to check the changing rooms. After they walked around, they left, to check other stores. Probably, to stand at the exits and wait.
"Dey give up soon" Sveta smirked, turning back to the girl "Not worth it to chase someone for ever for stealing food." Her eyes narrowed as she looked at the girl; she looked... homeless. And scared. Not to mention, surrounded by flies and a wasp. And... what was that sound? Sveta tilted her head as she leaned closer. She could hear the faint buzzing, coming from the girl's direction. Maybe it was a phone? It didn't sound like a phone. It sounded like insects.
Sveta sighed, and adjusted her gloves.
"You stay here a little."
She left the booth; a few minutes later, she returned with a bunch of clothes, and held them out to the girl.
"Change."

Agnes was in shock as she remained standing back, watching as it woman did everything she could to actually try and help her. So far in her experiences on the street, she got very little help. Hell, she was lucky if anyone seemed to notice her that had no ulterior motive to steal what little possessions she had. She tried to send her away. The last thing she wanted was to put her at risk, to have her labeled as an accomplice for some stupid petty crime like this. Normally Agnes would not have cared what human got arrested. They were all corrupt to her, but these days, she seemed to slowly be proven wrong.
Slowly she began to calm. The woman must have noticed the flies and wasps by now, so Agnes had to try extra hard to keep calm. She needed to relax before she accidentally released her own swarm who would attack this Samaritan, perceiving her as a threat. But, as Agnes concentrated on her breathing, the woman spoke up again.
>> "You stay here a little…”
English was obviously not her fist language. Agnes wanted to try and guess where she was from, but unfortunately right now simply was not the time, especially since she disappeared out of the dressing room. Agnes sighed as she stepped back from the door and sat down on the little bench was situated in each room. She took one big, calming breath, as she tried to relax. The buzzing in her chest slowly started to die down and as she clutched her bag to her chest, the smell of the hotdogs, mixed with the half-eaten pretzel in her bag. Her stomach immediately responded and growling louder than she had expected.
She peeked at the door and before the woman could come back, Agnes eagerly opened up the bag and pulled out the half-eaten pretzel. She took one big bite of it, and that euphoria that comes from eating when starvation has set in. She was about half through the remainder of the pretzel when the woman returned…
>>Change…
Agnes paused, a pretzel piece half hanging out of her mouth. She felt so embarrassed that her cheeks flushed red as she slowly swallowed the last bit of pretzel she had in her mouth. She then replaced the remainder into her bag and stood up, slowly taking the clothes from her. She was going to protest, but she knew that if she wanted to get out of here, that might be her only change. Meekly she nodded and accepted them.
By the time Sveta got back with the clothes, the girl was eating a pretzel. She did look hungry. And ashamed. Her cheeks were read. She handed her the clothes, and turned to peek outside again. No guards. The whole thing might just work out.
"It is okay." she smirked, waiting for her to change into some decent cothes. She actually bought them a moment ago, telling the assistant her sister poured her drink all over herself and she was ashamed to walk home like that. The woman was very helpful, and supplied her with a box of tissues as well.
"I remember I was like you." she said, leaning back against the wall of the booth "Not easy to get food free, huh." she said with a small smile. "We find some for you later, okay?"

That was all Agnes said as she changed and started to pull on the clothes that the nice woman had brought in for her. To be honest she was a little weary of her and simply wanted to get out of the mall. It was a stupid decision to have come here in the first place but her starvation had gotten the better of her. Normally she can easily handle these types of situations, she could wait until night fall or find something edible in a stray trashcan, you’d be surprised how many people simply tossed grease stained bags of burgers and fries away. But today…she felt different. The trashcans were empty or edible foodstuffs and the groceries stores were risky. At least the mall offered running distance should she get into trouble.
She never realized that that trouble would actually happen.
With a sigh she turned around and pulled off her worn dirty top to reveal her soft, pale skin underneath. Normally Agnes did not change in front of people, but her hunger and her need to escape this place overlooked all of that. As she did though, she inadvertently revealed the scars of her hard life to the woman who waited in the changing room with her. Her back had several knife slices and what looked like whip marks (who did that in this day and age?!). As she turned around to pull the shirt she was given, her most horrendous scar was revealed. In the middle of her flat, snow white stomach was a brand in the shape of a cross. This was no small scar either, it was big, ornate and painful looking.
Agnes made no notice that she revealed these wounds from her past to the woman and instead finished changing clothes and stuffed her old ones into her duffle bag.

Another sympathy routine? Agnes ground her teeth slightly. It seemed to her like everyone and their mother suddenly came from the streets and made a comfortable life for themselves. Unfortunately thus far she did not have that type of luck, nor was she sure she really wanted it. The better she did, the more people she met, the more likely it was that her parents would be able to track her. She sniffled as she gave a quick, small smile and nodded her head.
“Isn’t easy, but I manage.” she muttered as she quickly dried her eyes. “Thank you, but you don’t need to help me more. I just…I just want to get out of here and back home.”
Of course she noticed the scars. They were kind of hard to miss. They spoke volumes about a hard life, and pain, and... prejudice? Sveta bit her lips as she forced herself not to stare, and peeked out of the booth again instead. The girl got dressed, and looked much better now. And less easy to notice.
>>“Isn’t easy, but I manage. Thank you, but you don’t need to help me more. I just…I just want to get out of here and back home.”
She remembered that feeling. It was the same feeling that made her send the Matchmaker away the first couple of times when she tried to help her and Bo. Pride. Fear. All those things you feel when you live like that, and suddenly someone shows up to help, just too good to be real.
"I help you get out of here" she nodded, then her eyes narrowed a bit as she looked at her. "But, I have to tell you before, I am mutant." she held up her gloved hands "It do not matter for me if you are or not, but try to not touch me, it's safer for you."
She smiled at the girl.
"My name is Svetlana. What is yours?"

Agnes nodded as he listened to the woman talk. At least she did not insist on taking her to a shelter or something and hopefully she would want nothing in exchange for helping it. It was surprising how many people expect a favor just for “donating” a dollar to your own personal charity. She never felt that was right or fair of some people. Who cares that you gave a dollar to a homeless girl? What right does that give them to ask anything in return? Still, Agnes had run into too many people who wanted exactly the wrong things.
But this woman seemed different, especially with the fact that she was a mutant. At first she thought that maybe the woman was prejudice and simply did not want a mutant touching her, but the knowledge that she was a mutant too made Agnes wonder. Why did she not want to be touched? The question caused her to think deeply. Did it have something to do with her abilities?
Agnes decided to not dwell too much and glanced past the woman’s shoulder. She looked out into the store and saw that the security guards were indeed gone. A small sigh of relief escaped her lips as she stepped back and once more picked up her duffle bag and slung it over her shoulder.
>> "My name is Svetlana. What is yours?"
Upon seeing the nice greeting, Agnes was confused for a second but it did not last long. So few people every really greet her nicely anymore that she was thrown. What was it these days? People were coming up to her, actually speaking to her and greeting, offering chances to help. She wanted to believe that things were turning for the good, but she more believed that it was too good to be true. Warily she nodded to Svetlana and offered a very quick smile in return, one that could have been missed if one blinked.
“Agnes,” she replied in offered a small wave. She waited until Svetlana moved out of the changing room before opting to follow. “I…um, don’t know how I can repay you for this.”
>>“Agnes. I…um, don’t know how I can repay you for this.”
"Nice to meet you, Agnes" Sveta smiled, as they started walking towards the exit. Casually. The clothes had been already paid for; Sveta nodded to the asisstant with a friendly smile, and the woman smiled back. No problem there.
"One day, maybe you meet someone else who needs help. Dat is enough." she smiled. It sounded very poetic, but she really meant it. All the Matchmaker did for her and Bo played a big part in what she was doing for Agnes right now. "Or, you can just promise me you do not get married for de money. That works too." she added with a grin, as they walked out of the shop. Agnes probably didn't understand the joke. She didn't have to.
"Let's just go out of here, and we find another place to eat. Maybe they are still looking. I don't think, but it is best to be safe." she suggested, walking towards one of the exits.

Agnes blushed a little at that last comment about marrying for money. Even before she became a mutant the idea of marriage had never so much as entered her mind. She was far too busy with school, volunteering at her parents store, bible study that she never so much as entertained the thought of going on a date! Well…maybe once or twice but it was never something she acted on. And now, as she walked through the mall as nonchalantly as she could with her duffle bag over her shoulder and a swarm of insects living in her chest, she still did not entertain the thought.
After all, what guy would want to kiss her with the possibility of a roach popping out of her mouth to defend her because of her elevated heart rate?
“Promise made,” was all she said as she followed, eyes nervously cast about for any sign of the security guards. So far is seemed like they were in the clear.
Agnes still could not believe that the woman was kind enough to stop and help her out of that jam. Thankfully, though her heart still raced a little, she was calm enough to keep her swarm at bay. There was no more buzzing inside of her chest and instead she simply kept her head down and followed, trying to simply fade into the background. As they made their way towards one of the exits, she almost smiled. She was going to get out of this, finally leave this place and never return again. She could never return her, she vowed she never would.
>> "Let's just go out of here, and we find another place to eat. Maybe they are still looking. I don't think, but it is best to be safe."
Agnes shook her head but did not say anything until she felt that cold metal of the door handle in her hand and felt the pressure as she pushed it open and stepped out into the chilly air. She breathed as heavy sigh of relief as she stepped out with the Svetlana and immediately backed away. She was sure that the smell from her insects but still be grotesque, even with the change from dirty clothes into new ones.
She looked around nervously as she stayed away from the woman and glanced around, still not meeting the woman eye to eye. “T-Thank you. I can’t pay you back for these…I’m sorry. If you wait I can go into an alley and change so you can return them. And…I’m not that hungry anymore. I have enough supply,” she said as she patted her hotdog smelling dufflebag, “To last me a little while.”

Sveta looked at the girl, a bit confused by her sudden change of behavior. Was she scared of her because she was a mutant?... Or did she just want to get away with the rest of her dignity?... Been there, done that.
"You can keep them" she said with a smile "And I think you need a good meal, right? Come on, I do not bite. I am not making you come with me if you do not want to. I just want to help you."
She looked at the girl. She looked even more skinny in the sunlight.
"Don't worry, I am a mutant but I can't hurt you if you are not. Or if you don't touch me. It is safe, I promise."

Agnes wanted to protest. She really did. Staring at the extremely nice woman, finally in the eyes, if there was one thing that she could catch was honesty. Living on the streets, she had learned to pick up certain things from people. She could tell was she was being lied to or looked over, but this woman seemed to lack all of those. It looked as if she really wanted to help her, much like the black eyed girl she had met a couple nights ago in the alley where she played her music. She seemed to have the luck of people who truly wanted to help her.
Still though, wouldn’t this fall under charity? Agnes made it a point to never take charity. Letting someone do nice for you just to boost their self-importance was never a good idea. Never owe anyone any favors. She stuck by that motto, tried to subsist on it.
Now she was breaking it…for what? A hot meal and clothes? With a sigh she paused as she glance down to the clothes. They were at least clean and new. When was the last time she entered and shopped at a mall? She doubted she could remember correctly and instead looked earnestly at Svetlana.
“Um…o-okay. You…don’t have to…I don’t take charity. But…I can pay you back if you can figure a way for me to pay you back.” It was logical to her.

Agnes lowered her eyes and took a small step back from her. For a second it looked as if she was simply some bigoted human who feared mutants, but that was not the case. Agnes sniffled and shook her head, a small tear rolled down her cheek as she turned to look away from her and stared out across the street.
“I-I am a mutant.” she replied as she gently placed her hand against her own chest. “Those bugs…the ones in the dressing room…they're mine.”
She groaned as she felt her chest and rubbed, the warm from her own rubbings coursing throughout her and caused her to breaking into another tear. She hated talking about her mutation. It was so disgusting and nobody understood. You mention one small thing about bugs and it drives everyone batty. She was therefore not surprised when those she did tell reacted the way they did upon learning that an entire nest resided inside her chest. Inadvertently she rubbed her chest once more, trying to keep the swarm calm as she looked at Muse.
“If you want to run away now, you can.” she whispered. “Few people care to hang around me after learning something like that.”
>>“Um…o-okay. You…don’t have to…I don’t take charity. But…I can pay you back if you can figure a way for me to pay you back.”
"If you insist" Sveta shrugged; she was sure she would figure out the way for Agnes to repay her kindness by something that was actually good for her. Like, not running away. Or something.
And then she started crying.

Sveta blinked. Bugs. Okay. Bugs were not so bad. As long as they were not trying to smooch you.
"Why would I run away?" she asked, shaking her head "I just say to you that I am mutant too. So, you have bugs. Big deal." she smiled, and reached out to put her hand on her shoulder; she thought better in the last moment. "There are all kinds of crazy powers, where I come from. Dere is a guy who changes into a cocroach."
Yuck, by the way.
"And me, I boost mutant powers. Dat is why I told you not to touch me." she smiled "You didn't hear about the school? Dere is a school for mutants. All mutants. It is safe. I know, I lived there."
