The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

ooc: Title because I always joked about how Rupert is a cartoon TV show about a UK white bear who flies around like TinTin solving mysteries. Continued from The first post by Raina in the Teacher's Lounge
ic:
Raina flipped open her cell phone in her new office and sent the text to Rupert. "Plz Meet Me in my new office asap" He'd likely think she was nervous for her meetings with the few parents and potential students today- troubled cases with bad histories... but with everything swirling around her head right now she had to deal with this quick so she could focus on the tasks at hand. Raina prided herself on being a sincere person and in order to give the new young people she'd be meeting today every ounce of what she had to give she couldn't be worrying about Rupert's reaction- so she postponed the meetings till the next day citing illness and a doctor's appointment- more or less the truth.
She looked around the barren office- just a desk with the usual equipment on it and a wedding photo above it. She'd have to get some plants in here and some paintings to liven the place up a bit.
She spun about nervously tidying and adjusting things with her jittery hands. Twice she knocked her cup of pencils over. Her mind was racing with how much things were about to change- and everything leading up to this moment.
Raina had been told that due to her mutation and the awful trauma she received in the camps it was unlikely she'd ever naturally conceive a child. Back then- when the world was a less happier place, Raina almost felt relieved. She didn't think she could bring a child into this world. It didn't mean she mourned any less for the one she'd lost that she didn't even know about back in the camps.
But that was history now and Raina believed in fate. Maybe God made things happen that way because he in his great divine wisdom knew that a baby would not survive during registration- maybe this was the same little girl that had been taken from her all those years ago given a second chance-
She shook her head in an attempt to clear it. She was starting to think like her Husband now. She'd always been a faithful and spiritual person- but Rupe could be down right silly. The thought made her blush and she tried counting again back to decipher when exactly this baby had been conceived. That made her blush even more.
She couldn't wipe the goofy smile off her face. Of course- she was scared not sure how her mutated body could cope with pregnancy but she was far too excited to show it. She played over in her head all the different creative ways she could tell Rupert knowing she'd have no choice but to bluntly tell him now. It would be so like Raina to bake him a cake with a pacifier on it, or give him a shirt that said "world's best dad" and hope he'd figure it out on his own. But not today. She wouldn't tease him today.
She was glowing a bit feeling much better than earlier and leaned against her desk standing looking at her phone. She wasn't sure where Rupert was or when he'd be free- she thought texting him would be the less invasive way to contact if he was meeting students or even teaching. She could be waiting all day... but looking out the window at the sun and imagining the tiny life inside her- Raina didn't care.

The poodle-springer spaniel mix in the kennel wagged his tail, and his whole cream-and-black bottom wagged with it. Pastor Rupert Kelley stared in through the wire fence like he was searching for his soul mate. The poodle mutt on the other side looked out like he was a vacant ball of bouncing fur. Rupert Kelley dropped his head, and sighed. Then he stood back up, and dusted his black pants off. That was not Flipsy.
He hadn't told Raina about his increasingly frequent visits to the Pax Community Center's animal shelter. It wasn't that he wanted it to be a surprise, or that he was afraid she wouldn't approve--it was just that... he wasn't sure he was ready yet.
Flipsy had passed away last winter, at the tottering old age of seventeen. She had gone quietly: Rupert had poured her food bowl, then gone to make breakfast for himself and Raina. It was as he was flipping the omelet that he realized the little lady hadn't gotten out of bed yet. She'd passed in her sleep. He'd scattered her ashes in Central Park. Raina had been very supportive. She hadn't pressed him at all. But still... the house was so quiet these days. They didn't have children; the doctors had said that Raina couldn't have any, though it was as much his own fault as hers. More. Just because something is in the past doesn't mean you can't still bare the blame for it. They'd discussed opening their home to children at the Pax Academy, but somehow, they kept putting off the paperwork. The house was quiet with just the two of them. They needed a new dog. None of these dogs was Flipsy, though.
Rupert gave a guilty start as his cell phone buzzed in his pocket. It was set on vibrate, of course--it wouldn't do to have it chiming merrily away in the middle of class, or a service.
>> "Plz Meet Me in my new office asap"
He looked down at the message, then flipped his phone shut. It disappeared back into his pocket as he headed out the door of the shelter.
"Nobody caught your eye, Pastor Rupert?" The volunteer at the front desk asked, brightly.
"Not this time, Sarah." He replied.
"If you have the time, Pastor Rupert, you should volunteer here--you could take the dogs for walks between classes," she suggested off-handedly.
Rupert gave a small smile. "I think... I might like that."
Outside Raina's door, he paused to knock before sticking his head in. She was busy organizing her desk supplies again--honestly, how neat did they need to be? He knew she was jittery over the parent meetings today, but having every paper squared away and her desktop groomed like a Zen rock garden couldn't really help. His face cracked into a smile as he peered in at her fussings: an honest smile. "Hey. How's my favorite mermaiden?"
How she managed to look so nervous and so radiant at the same time always baffled him. That was just who she was: Raina. Raina Kelley. His wife; and it was his honor to wake up every morning and remember that he was her husband.

Raina was lost in her thoughts when her husband sneaked in and asked how she was feeling. "I'll be heading to the doctor soon- don't worry. I'm certain I'm not contagious." she walked across the gap between them and kissed him lightly and stepped back to take a look at him and brush a few stray hairs off his shirt. She sighed happily. "but I'm feeling... excellent." she admitted. She wasn't exactly sure how to go about this next part- blurt it out? Keep it simple? The decision showed on her face for a moment as she went back to her desk and again re-arranged. "How was your morning so far? How are you feeling about things?" It was obvious she was thinking something through as she waited for his response.
"I postponed my appointments with the parents and students until tomorrow. I know it's cutting a little close but I think it's important I see the doctor today." Then she spun on her heels and faced her husband again.
"Rupert..." she started softly. "There's a reason I called you here so urgently this morning-" Raina was a little too apologetic most of the time but she didn't like calling Rupert away from any of his duties as he always took everything he did very seriously. "I uh... I'm not sure how to say it really..." the red crept across her face giving her away and her eyes became wet.
"Rupert..." she smiled taking his hand in hers and pressing it to her stomach. "You're going to be a daddy."

"Rupert... You're going to be a daddy."
He heard the words, but he didn't understand them.
"Rupert... You're going to be a daddy."
He looked down at her smiling face, then followed her hand down to his own; the hand she had guided to her belly.
"Rupert... You're going to be a daddy."
Nothing else she'd said since he'd entered the office mattered. Nothing he'd done that day mattered. There was just his hand, on that beautiful warmth that was her. He could feel her pulse and his own; counter beats that chased each other's harmonies.
"Rupert... You're going to be a daddy."
Was it just him, or could he feel another beat in there, as well? A sleeping beat, just waking up.
Slowly, a smile spread over his lips. His mouth opened, but no words came out. He stood there dumbly grinning down at her, all dignity for his position lost.
"Rupert... You're going to be a daddy."
"Coul--" He paused to wet his suddenly dry lips; "Could you say that again?"

ooc: sorry for the delay! very busy school year!
ic:
Raina looked at her husbands shocked expression as a minute went by. Her eyebrows furrowed and she was suddenly worried fearing the worst- but when that dumbfounded smile crossed his lips Raina couldn't help but grin with a silly face ear-to-ear.
"I didn't believe it myself at first." She admitted. "But I took 4 tests!" she held up 4 fingers. "Four Rupert! Each box comes with two. You're supposed to wait 24 hours between each test because they could give you a negative if you're only just pregnant. But mine were positive all four times!" she exclaimed.
"I wasn't keeping track of... well.. you know." she looked away bashfully. "I mean, as far as I knew I didn't really have a reason to keep track and you know me I get destracted easily..." She bit her lip and looked up at him anxiously again. "I did the math- I think it's right of course I could be off by a week or so but I think I'm 9 weeks..."
She still hadn't moved her hand from her stomach. "I have had all the symptoms now that I think about it but I guess when you think being pregnant is impossible you write these things off or something... whoa.. I guess I'm a little too excited." her skin felt clammy as she expereinced a hot flash. Her stomach did a flip flop. "Oh... " she looked a little green but the feeling and colour went away as quickly as it came. "Yep. Totally pregnant." she mumbled recovering her glow again. "I'm going to the doctor in a bit... but I think we'll be parents around the end of April or so... a spring baby!"

>> "I didn't believe it myself at first. But I took 4 tests!"
"Four," he repeated, the corner of his mouth twitching as she held up those fingers: four, of course.
>> "Four Rupert! Each box comes with two. You're supposed to wait 24 hours between each test because they could give you a negative if you're only just pregnant. But mine were positive all four times!"
He ran a hand through his dark hair. In years past, that would have been a move of frustration; now, with his raised eyebrows and slight head shake, it was something else entirely: it was his '...That's Raina' expression. One of many, in fact. Four. She'd taken four. Because there were two in each box.
And she was nine weeks pregnant. That was... that was over two months. Wasn't it? He was fairly certain it was, but his basic math was failing him, somehow. There were four weeks to a month and she'd taken four tests so that made... nine weeks that he hadn't known he would be a father for, but... he was. He was a father.
Raina turned an interesting shade of green. Rupert took a quick step forward, putting a steadying hand on her shoulder.
>> "Oh... Yep. Totally pregnant."
"Are you okay? Was that normal? That was normal, right?" He felt like he should know what the usual symptoms of pregnancy were. This morning, he would have been able to name a few, in an unconcerned, distant manner. Now... he thought that a doctor sounded like a very good idea. A doctor would know exactly what was normal.
"A Spring baby..." He repeated, still trying to wrap his mind around it. "What are we going to name her? Him? ...Them?"

Raina lurched a little more and regained her composure. "It's completley normal, sadley." she laughed.
She could see her husband was still in shock but that the idea of being a father was starting to sink in. "Spring" she smiled. She was happy his first thought was of a name but she cringed when he said 'them'. "I doubt it's a them..." she laughed. "But I suppose you never know."
She leaned against the desk with a coy smile. "I expect this is a lot to take in." she added. "But I actually do have a doctor's appointment in about half an hour." she admitted. "I'm going to take a cab it's not that far. Are you going to be alright for the rest of the day? I can let you know what the doctor says..."
She hadn't really considered inviting her husband to the doctors... not on purpose really. Raina tried to stay out of Ruperts way while he was working to give him his space. They had much in common but they were both still very different and Raina could sometimes be a little over bearing while Rupe could be a bit intense. It was second nature for her to assume to do things on her own.
She smiled up at her husband
ooc: sorry a little fuzzy, but safe for a few exams I should be able to get back in this 100% within the next two weeks. PM me your plans for FP and I'll get going on my end!

((ooc: Sorry for the delay! I'm having a hard time slippin' into the "Future Rupert". He's just so... happy. *gives a little shudder, to perish the thought* ))
>> "It's completely normal, sadly."
All this lurching could not be healthy, no matter what she said, even if he ignored the colors her face was turning. The pale, pasty, sickly colors. He'd noticed that she'd seemed to feel a little off lately, but he'd never imagined-- He'd just assumed it was a cold...
>> "Spring. I doubt it's a them... But I suppose you never know."
Rupert's concern was forgotten in a wash of sudden questions. Spring. What kind of day would it be, when their child was born? How would the sky look? Would it be morning or night? Would it have Raina's eyes? Would it be safe to let Alice, his Goddaughter, hold it, or would he be too afraid of the little girl dropping it? What was 'it'--boy or girl? Did he want to know?
>> "I expect this is a lot to take in."
Rupert nodded: nod. One nod. One very meaningful nod.
>> "But I actually do have a doctor's appointment in about half an hour. I'm going to take a cab it's not that far. Are you going to be alright for the rest of the day? I can let you know what the doctor says..."
Ten years hadn't changed Rupert entirely. When confronted with an entirely unexpected situation, he still acted the same exact way: he did the first thing that came to mind. In this case, that involved a lot of blurting, as thoughts crashed their way to the surface. "A cab? You are not going to the hospital in a cab--neither of you are! I've seen how those cabbies drive. I'll take yo-- The rabbi from Maine will be guest-speaking in my classes today! I have to be there to-- Will there be an ultrasound? Your first ultrasound!" Impulsively, he wrapped his wife in a hug. "I've got to be there for-- Aggh, I need to video conference with the London branch of the Academy later today! I need to make sure everything is set for our visit to-- Can you fly? I mean, is it safe for pregnant women to fly?"
No, ten years hadn't changed Rupert all that much at all. He was still one of the most self-contradicting men in the city. That part of him might have actually gotten worse, actually. Or maybe it was just the shock talking.

ooc: I wasn't sure when we'd resume this so in a post with Lee I assumed the appointment happened and went well so Im dragging this post in that direction!
ic: Raina burst into a round of girly giggles at her husbands rambles. "Personally, I can't fly. " she admitted. "but on an airplane- I can ask the doctor about. I think it's safe until a certain point. They basically don't want you having a baby on a plane!" she looked at the time and back to him. "You have responsabilities here to tend with Rupert Kelley. Only you can do them. There will be lots of time for you to stress over re-working your schedule for future appointments but today is a big day for the school and they need you. It'll be a half hour cab ride max, and I think they will do an ultra sound but I wont be able to tell anything yet I'm sure... I think it'll take another weeks before our little monkey looks like a baby. If they give me anything I'll bring it home-" she continued through the list while pulling on her jacket and a scarf "and I'll make sure to book the next appointment for an evening so you can come. I'll have my cell phone with me if you need anything- anymore questions you have write them down-" she fished a notepad out of her pocket and passed it to him. "If I don't already ask the doctor I'll be sure to ask next time." she stood up on her tiptoes and gave him a kiss. "Now if you don't mind I'm going to enjoy these nice new jeans while they still fit." she winked. "Love you! be back soon!"
and like a whirlwind she was out of the room and heading down the hall to get her cab
