The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Katrina brushed the sandwich crumbs off of her skirt and collapsed backward onto the pale blue and green checkered blanket. Her hands patted her belly where two sandwiches, an apple, a bag of chips, a juice box, and a pack of gushers now resided. That was delicious. Now she just needed to rest for a few minutes and let her stomach do its job.
She watched puffy white clouds float by. They looked like rats sneaking through the world's largest piece of cheese and evil unicorns sitting on top of mountains and girls crawling out from under walls in the middle of the night.
“Such a perfect day,” she muttered, letting her eyes slide closer and closer to being closed, “Don't you think so?”
She had completed a mission, which was really no harder than wandering around the park and taking photographs of all the graffiti they could find, her mother had packed an excellent picnic to eat after a job well done, the weather was nice, and she got to enjoy it all with a friend with whom she hadn't spent nearly enough time lately.
“Carrick, you're not falling asleep, are you?” Katrina's own eyes were closed now, so she couldn't tell. She had had way to many late night recently and the exercise, the food, and the sunshine were all adding up to one inevitability... if the griffin boy didn't do anything about it.
Carrick’s nose twitched slightly as he swatted a lone fruit fly that thought about making a move on his sandwich, as he was about to eat into it. A tail flicked behind Carrick matching the movement of his hand shooing the insect away from a sandwich that his friend’s mother had prepared. He loved Kat’s mother’s sandwiches it reminded him of the food preparations his mother always used to make for him when he was supposed to be at school.
Finishing off the sandwich he was slightly surprised at how much Kat managed to eat. The shifter smirked slightly his mismatched eyes fixed upon the blonde laying next to him on the checkered blanket. Reaching into the back that contained more food Carrick pulled out an apple and quickly consumed the rest of his meal managing to eat all of the food that Kat had consumed but with an extra pack of gushers, his mouth still of food he simply nodded to Kat’s questions figuring it was a rhetorical question.
She was starting to drift off, which at the time didn’t seem like a bad idea. After all he did manage to ‘save’ the day and manage to get a few pictures of some graffiti one of the paintings he might have placed one night just to try it out. Something he decided not to mention to Kat while they took a picture of it.
Reaching up lifting his lip Carrick placed his index finger on one of his front teeth to feel how much sharper it had become than it had used to be something he was still trying to get used to. He didn’t know why his teeth got sharper, or why his ears got pointer and for the most part he didn’t really care it was a change for the better he supposed and didn’t really feel like paying it much more mind then he needed to.
”Still think’in bout it,” Carrick said closing his eyes and letting a thud sound as his back hit the ground and his wings extended slightly under his back brushing up against Kat’s arm. His eyes closed and he let the warmth from the sun beat upon his face and his wings making him feel warm all over. The warmth made a small rumble continuously echo out from his throat.
The sunlight shone red through her eyelids, making her eyes feel warm and even more tired. Feathers brushed her arm like a soft blanket; she was so tempted to pull his wing over herself like a down comforter and sleep there all afternoon.
That would be dangerous, though, for two reasons. The first being that all kinds of creepy people wandered around in the park. The second being that she would miss her afternoon appointment to drop off something at the Oracle shop.
Five wouldn't hurt, though. Nor ten.
…
Something poked at her bare foot. Katrina twitched it and pulled it back under the comforter, away from the tickling menace from below. The something poked at her knee. She swatted it away, or rather tried to swat.
Instead of hitting air, she swatted something rather solid with a rather surprising slapping noise. Her eyes flew open. The park around her was as green as ever, but a few things were different from minutes ago when she had closed her eyes. First, she had somehow gotten all tangled up in Carrick's wing. Second, someone familiar was standing over her, smirking below his sunglasses. Third, The shadows were much longer than she remembered.
“Wha?!”
She sat up straight, glaring at the boy in sunglasses. “What are you doing here?”
His smirk widened, “Somehow I knew you'd be late, and I didn't feel like waiting all afternoon.”
The purring continued until the continuous sound managed to put him under. Not that he would matter, Katrina was responsible she would wake him up if he fell asleep for two long. It was defiantly not the first time Carrick fell asleep in the park and where they were positioned it was far safer than where he happened to pass out. Trees are only good as long as you find an intersecting branch a single branch you run the risk of flipping off and landing on your feet. Not the best way to wake up.
A dream flashed passed his eyes and then he heard some rustling and his wing was being tugged and moved about. He opened his mismatched color eyes lazily and noticed Katrina moving out from her tangled position with his wings. ”Jealous of ‘em ain’t cha?” he said it with one eye closed as his hands reached up and brushed the sleep out of his eyes.
Katrina spoke and that was then he noticed there was someone else staring at them, ”Not a creepy way to wake up,” Carrick said as his throat vibrated slightly different than from before. His lip twitched upward slightly and he looked around the sound fading when he discovered he and Katrina had been out for some time. ”You were supposed to wake me up.” Carrick said slightly before looking to the creeper in sunglasses, ”Who’s the mentaller?” Carrick asked tilting his head making sure the kid wasn’t there for the wrong reasons.
“Sorry, sorry,” she murmured to Carrick, “I didn't mean to.”
Katrina sat up straight, pushing that which was Carrick's back in his direction and rearranging that which was hers so it looked less rumpled. She didn't look up to meet the glass shaded gaze until she felt her cheeks cool off a little bit.
She wasn't sure what would have been worse: getting caught with her guard down by a random stranger intent on torturing her in the sewers or getting caught with her guard down by someone she knew would give her a hard time about it for weeks to come, who, now that she thought about it, had already gotten a head start at it. When they had made plans to meet at the shop he had waggled his eyebrows at her. She had just thought he was being weird at the time, but now that she knew what he knew would happen, she understood the significance.
When she finally looked up, he waggled his eyebrows again, then asked, “So, aren't you going to introduce me to your new boyfriend?”
“He's not my boyfriend. His...” Katrina paused to glare as the boy with sunglasses coughed into the back of his hand in such a way as to make it sound like “yet”. “His name is Carrick. He's a friend from the mansion. He has wings.”
She glared again, despite the fact that his sunglasses seemed to deflect the attack without decreasing the size of his grin whatsoever.
She softened to look for her feathered companion, “Carrick, this is Alister. He's from the oracle shop called Future Site.” She purposely did not call him a friend. She hoped the stuck up blind-poser noted the difference. “He's a know-it-all.” One of the insufferable variety.
Katrina apologized, for something that wasn’t her fault. If it wasn’t for the new guy Carrick would have given her a hard time however he let it go his attention was now shifted on the new guy who was determined that he and Katrina were an item, something that made Carrick fight off the color that was about to be added to his face.
>>> “His name is Carrick. He's a friend from the mansion. He has wings.”
”Among other things…” Carrick said grinning baring his newly elongated teeth that almost with another inch or two boarded on fangs. Carrick’s tail also cut through the air behind him as he stood up to greet the new comer who was apparently a know it all and someone who Katrina didn’t seem to get along with from her tone of voice. A fact that Carrick thought was impossible seeing as almost everyone Katrina saw was greeted with a smile.
>>>“He's a know-it-all.”
”Know it all?” Carrick paused and smirked before giving Katrina a look like he was skeptical of the proclaimed know-it-all ”How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if he could chuck it?”
“Irrelevant question,” Alister's smile did not diminish, “but it is nice to finally meet you in person.” Ever polite, ever smiling, he was completely unfazed by the fangs that flashed in his direction.
Katrina stood up and smoother her skirt once again, then started packing up the picnic items that hadn't yet been put away. In her grumpiness she failed to warn Carrick that she would be pulling the blanket out from under him. He was only really on one little corner anyway.
“What did you want to meet for anyway, Alister? You said I'd have something for you, but I really don't know anything new.”
Alister's grin, if it was possible, grew wider, “Oh, but you do have something for me. Him.” He pointed with his toe at the griffin boy.

”Says you,” Carrick said losing interest with the kid more and more, Kat didn’t like him and he didn’t feel like answering Carrick’s question even if it was as he said ‘irrelevant’. Turing from the kid Carrick turned his attention back to the set up they had for their little excursion and his eyes trailed over the checkered blanket to let Kat know if she was ready he could take them both away from the company of the know-it-all.
Kat tugged the blanket and Carrick jumped in the air slightly and his wings opened as he landed softly on the ground his wings closing up behind him as she was packing up the supplies. It seemed she was one step ahead of him. It seemed his friend Katrina sometimes had stuff for him. Carrick blinked not liking the fact that he didn’t know parts about his friends lives, he thought they were beyond secrets by now.
Carrick turned slightly and picked up a piece of garbage put it in his pocket and let the pair continue on their conversation until he heard the reason that Alister was there. He was there for him. Carrick’s tail flicked behind him and he stared at Alister, ”Errr…” Carrick interjected hoping the conversation wasn’t going somewhere he didn’t want it to go… ”I’m not really for anybody, sides yur’ not really my type.” his mind trailed off to Liz for a moment before he shook his head and then added, ”free bird.”
Carrick’s mismatched colored eyes shifted to Kat and he nodded his head, ”Ready when you are…”
Katrina finished stuffing the last of their things back into their backpack. She gave one last glare to Alister. She didn't dislike him, really. He was nice enough. He even shared useful bits about the future most of the time.
It was just that, in this case, she felt just a teeny bit like she was being used. Or played. Or whatever else one wanted to call it. She understood that knowing the future could change something about it and all that. But did he have to be so cocky about it?
In all actuality, Alister was feeling anything but cocky at the moment. His habitual smile was all but plastered on, but it wasn't showing how he actually felt: this meeting wasn't going as he had expected it would, and he didn't like it. Perhaps another tactic would work better.
“Tell me, Carrick,” the oracle demanded, lowering his sunglasses slightly, but not yet revealing his eyes, “Would you like to know what the future has in store for you?”
Pointed ears twitched as he heard his name being called, it wasn’t from the person he wanted to hear from but rather the ‘know-it-all’ he didn’t really care about. The question asked to him made him stop for a second made him really ponder what was in store for him. He blinked and turned to Alister and mismatched color eyes shifted from Katrina to boy.
”I have a general idea about what happens, spark notes version I live a good and happy life, find someone I really care about and I rule the skies.” Carrick said with some sincerity in his voice. It was in fact all he really wanted in life to live happily.
”But I got a feeling you know something I don’t and let me guess, you know.” Carrick smirked revealing pointed fangs and then looked to Kat, ”How do you know him?” Carrick asked with sense of surprise in his tone. Here Carrick thought Katrina only hung out with thieves not con artists as well.
Turning back to Alister and nodding his head Carrick, ”I don’t have any money so whatever your selling can’t afford it.” Carrick said his tail brushing against his back pocket where his wallet resided filled with several larger bills he managed to find before his little picnic with Katrina. ”Nice glasses by the way.” Carrick said with typical sarcastic tone while mismatched colored eyes fixed on the boys sunglasses.
Katrina shrugged at Carrick's question. It was a little hard to explain how she was involved with Alister. He was sort of a friend, though she didn't feel like calling him one at the moment. The whole saving-the-future thing was equally difficult to put into words.
“We have friends in common and we play on the same team,” that described about half of it. Though she hated to admit it, “He plays a pretty important role on the team, actually.”
She couldn't stay grumpy at Alister forever, and she was inadvertently giving Carrick a bad impression. Alister really wasn't that bad.
“Maybe you should have him show you, and you can see why I call him a know-it-all.”
Alister was grinning again, “For your first time, it'll be free.”
Carrick shrugged mentally at her response as he kept staring the ‘know-it-all’ down while still keeping a toothy grin. It had been a habit lately to smile when he met people he didn’t really care for which was alright some of the time the people he really didn’t like took one look shrugged and then walked away irritated. Others, it seemed only wanted to get more confrontational. ”Didn’t take you for a sport player“ Carrick said trailing off as Katrina spoke again.
”Magic trick?” Carrick asked with an amused look on his face until Alister removed his glasses. HE looked from Katrina to Alister and he felt his eyes being drawn to Alister’s pale white eyes and he felt a tug forward and then he started to fall.
Everything when white at first, not a light at the end of the tunnel white but more of a white painted drywall white. One he was familiar with as a kid. Everywhere around him he looked in a few different directions and then he felt gravity take hold and he was falling and fast.
Images raced passed Carrick as he continued to fall, it was him in a few years from now, he could tell mainly because of the facial features that and the golden brown wings and bushy tail not to many people have similar traits. He was happy and laughing and he was with a girl. She was blonde and had greenish eyes. They were holding hands and walking.
Carrick’s nosed twitched and then another image among the background caught his attention, another girl, grey eyes and blonde hair. Carrick’s nose twitched again. He knew who both those girls were and during each of those brief images he could tell they both made an older version of him happy.
Another image swirled passed and another, he was flying in most walking in some and even swimming or one or two. Carrick smiled happily as he watched future self after future self-living life happy.
Then things started to get a little hazy Carrick looked around and the happy images of him seemed to speed by as darker images seemed to slow for his viewing. One was of a familiar church he frequented now the tower was the same but it was burnt and ashy, he sat alone. Mismatched eyes filled with sadness as he looked out over the horizen there was nothing but rubble. Something happened and he had survived.
Carrick’s body tightened as his body felt the gravity pull him closer and closer more and more images rushed by some of them good and some of them bad, Carrick shut his eyes briefly and wished it would end but when he opened them he was looking at a Carrick of the future huddled over a body one with blonde hair. There was blood on this Carrick’s hands and a huge gash in the stomach of the woman he was huddled over he was sad and crying and at the same time his body showed nothing but rage.
Carrick landed on the ground and looked up to the sky his heart racing and his vision blurred after the fall. Carrick sat up right in an instant to find that he was in the present and the initial fear that over took him seconds ago when he looked at the last image before he came to. ”…Wha…. What was that?” Carrick asked his voice serious and as he looked from Alister to Katrina and then quickly looked down. Ashamed of what the bad he had seen himself do.
Katrina watched Alister lower his glasses and saw Carrick fall to his knees. It took only a moment, but from the look on Carrick's face, a lot had happened in that moment. Alister, of course, looked like he was as cool as a cucumber, not reacting emotionally at all to the things that he was seeing.
The future seer slipped his sunglasses back over his eyes.
“What did you see?” Katrina breathed. All at once she was curious about the futures that they saw, and yet, she didn't want Alister to look at hers. So she had to live vicariously.
Alister raised his eyebrows, but didn't answer right away. “Sorry, customer confidentiality. It's his future, so only he can tell you.”
“Wha?”
Katrina glared at the seer, “How is he a customer? He didn't pay, you didn't even ask if that was what he wanted. You're just...”
Alister shrugged, “Well, my work is done here. It was nice to meet you Carrick.” He offered his hand to the griffin boy to shake before he left.
His head was still swimming he didn’t like what he saw at the end but for the most part some of it was enjoyable to have seen. Carrick’s hands clenched on the ground clumps of grass being pulled up under his fingers as he tightened into a fist as his vision got blurry to see himself so happy numerous times only to see himself fall into the depths of sadness and anger. It scared him to see something he never wanted to relive again. He wanted a happy life and from what he saw if he played his cards right it would happy however he wasn’t exactly what cards should be played.
”… Nothing surprising…” Carrick lied as his fists pushed the grass pack into the ground before he breathed in to control himself. Whatever he saw towards the end he intended to keep for himself he wasn’t even sure exactly what he was looking at no need to scare himself or anyone else. ”I ruled the skies.” Carrick said with a fake smile, as he looked up to Kat his tone changing again to his more cheery one. He then let out a small laugh and looked to Katrina, ”Though I need to stay away from Cabbage.” Carrick said trying to lighten his mood.
Alister moved closer to Carrick before he could fully stand up and when he saw the hand offered in a shake the young shifter seized the opportunity and reached out pulling the seer closer to him pulling his own body up in the process. From there Carrick leaned in and whispered so Kat couldn’t see his face or hear his voice which filled with hate and fear from what he saw, ”How do I stop it?” Carrick asked curious as to how to save a life.
There had to have been more than being king of the skies. Carrick could have gotten a more descriptive fortune out of a cookie. Clearly he was hiding something, made even more clear by the way the two boys were suddenly huddling like old chums.
Alister's face even looked half way serious when Carrick pulled him close. Katrina frowned at them both for keeping secrets, and out of spite for them both picked up the picnic basket and started walking away. A little ways, so they could keep up.
“It's a possible future, you've got to change something about what you're doing and where you're going to get it to change. We can always look again, and keep looking, to see if we can find that one change you need to make that not happen. It'll take time, though. You'll have to come to the shop for readings, maybe you could help us out with a couple of things, you know, pitch in a bit to help offset all the free advice I'll probably have to give you.”
Katrina stopped to pick a handful of purple flowers that were growing as weeds in the crack along the edge of the sidewalk. Some gardener was going to come and cut them down otherwise. They'd have a much happier life in a vase on the mansion's kitchen table, she thought.
