The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Shin was fine. But he wasn't. While the bullet hadn't been able to pierce his shard armor, the impact had bruised a fair few ribs in the general area. The bruises were pretty magnificent, and every time Kealey saw them she couldn't help but think about what would have happened if he hadn't been coincidentally about to show her his new developments.
It shook her to her very core. Shin had always seemed invincible, swooping into save her, or save someone else, walking up and simply cutting giant turkeys in two. Shin didn't get hurt...bad things didn't happen to him when he did dangerous things.
...Except maybe they did.
Shin needed rest, and Kealey needed to take care of him. It had worked out really well so far, except for the fact that neither of them had really talked about the whole thing. For an empath, repressing feelings was tough, but she didn't want to worry Shin while he was trying to rest and recover.
So instead she brought him soup. And blankets. And comic books. And snacks. And drinks. And Medicine. And her.
"How are you feeling?" she asked as she held out the glass of water she'd just gotten for him.

Rainbow triangles of glory and sparkliness! Magical shard drill that will pierce the heavens! Dancing shield of glittering impenetrability! How could this amazing combination lose? Well, it hadn't. Technically. Technically, it had stopped some bullets, and kept him from looking like Swiss Cheese. And who wanted to argue over technicalities?
Kealey did. Kealey wanted to argue over technicalities. And fret over him like a mom with her child.
He was fine. It was kind of exasperating how she was still worried about him, but he got it. He'd been there, with Kasumi, when she had always made him worry. He understood. Dangerous stuff was dangerous. And you never really stopped worrying about loved ones.
If he took a job as a cop, it'd only be a bigger danger.
Danger was his middle name. If... Japanese people regularly chose to give their children middle names, that was. If... he had a middle name, or had chosen one legally... that would have been it.
He was an adult. He could take care of himself. He could throw her worries on the ground. Or not. Whatevs. It was cool.
"I'm fine." Shin replied, smiling as he took the glass. "Really, I am. You don't have to worry about me. It isn't even that serious. It's not like when Sam broke my arm."

Was she really that transparent?
Giving Shin a wan smile, Kealey sank down on the edge of the bed as he told her that she didn't need to worry about him. Apparently this was nothing like the time that Sam had broken his arm. Really? He was comparing a bullet wound to a broken arm?
"That's the thing..." Kealey said, picking at invisible lint on the covers so she had something to look at while she talked.
"I never thought I had to worry. Until the other day..."
Thinking about the whole thing made Kealey shudder and frown.
"We weren't even doing anything dangerous Shin. If you hadn't been going to show me that armor then...then..."
She couldn't even say the words, but they were heavily implied.

"I know." He cupped her hand. "I know the feeling. Worrying about Kasumi tore me apart. That's why I don't want you to worry, Kealey. Please." He looked her gently in the eye. "All that worry congealing into a ball in the pit of your stomach is unhealthy. Try and take your mind off of it."
An idea hit him.
"You know..." He said slyly. "In Japan, when people are in the hospital and others worry about them, they fold 1000 paper cranes and string them up in the person's room for good luck. The legend says if you string 1000 origami paper cranes up, you'll be granted a wish... maybe you could do that?"

Kealey sighed as Shin took her hand. At least he understood, and when he explained the ball of worry, Kealey couldn't help but run a hand over her stomach. It was there.
He'd felt that way with Kasumi...and they both knew where that had gone. Kealey scowled at the notion, and nodded her head when Shin said that she needed to take her mind off of her worrying. He was right. Dwelling on what had happened wouldn't help anyone. Nothing too bad had happened, whether it was sheer dumb luck or the grace of God. It was wrong to question such things.
Shin spoke more, about a Japanese tradition, and since sewing and sketching hadn't worked to take her mind off things, Shin's idea had a lot of merit.
"Be right back." she said, then scurried from the room, only to return a short while later with paper of all sorts. It wasn't origami paper, but there was newspaper, butcher paper, pattern paper, fancy paper napkins, leftover wrapping paper from Christmas, newspaper, and even some Kleenex. Dumping the supplies onto the bed, Kealey smiled a satisfied smile.
"Teach me." she demanded, reclaiming her seat. 1000 cranes was going to take a while. They needed to get started.

Shin started folding paper and Kealey had to smile, just a little bit at the sight.
He'd distracted her, given her something else to put her mind on so she didn't have to worry about him. Kealey had a feeling that it wouldn't ever go away completely. Not when mortality had summarily punched her in the gut.
Shin spoke, and while she continued to watch him fold, a wider smile spread across Kealey's face. It may have even been described as impish. Out she reached, grabbing a piece of paper and starting to mimic the folds Shin had already made.
"Do you want me to call you 'sensei', Tetsuya?" she asked with a sideways glance. She even managed not to giggle...at least for a few seconds.

Hey. She'd called him by his first name. To quote C3PO, "Oh my." Shin glanced up at her from his folding, fighting fire with fire (a blush with a smirk).
"Definitely," He said.
His eyes dropped back down to the paper he was folding, but his focus stayed. On Kealey. Right over there. Folding paper and giggling at him like a schoolgirl. He did his best not to stumble over his folds.

That little knot of worry in her stomach...wasn't knotted quite so tightly anymore, Kealey decided as she continued to follow Shin's folds. He smirked and commented, and she laughed, unknotting that knot even more. Laughing helped, Kealey decided, laughing and acting normal like nothing was wrong.
"You made a good point." she said, still chuckling a little as she continued to fold.
"I can't worry all the time." One fold, then another, time after time.
"That would ruin all of this.".
"And this is pretty darn good." She finished, holding out her hand, the folded wrapping paper crane sitting in the palm of her hand.

The crane took flight, and Kealey grinned, watching as it circled her head. 998 didn't seem like too many. Not really, when she thought about it. Pulling forward another piece of paper, convinced she'd paid close enough attention the first time around to work on her own, Kealey set to folding.
"So that's what you were going to show me." she said, "The armor? Can you do the shirt with the gloves and the sword, or just one at a time?" They'd never really had a chance to talk about it.
While she waited, she folded, occasionally laughing as the flying crane bumped her head. "And how long can you keep that up and fold."

>>"So that's what you were going to show me." Kealey said, "The armor? Can you do the shirt with the gloves and the sword, or just one at a time?"
>>"And how long can you keep that up and fold."
She was absolutely full of questions, wasn't she? But how long could she keep those up and fold? And wasn't she supposed to be the one doing all the folding? Students these days. Piling all the work onto the teacher and expecting easy As. Pft.
"You know..." Shin said slowly, teasing her. "Just because you're sleeping with the teacher, don't expect him to do all the work. I did one. Guess who gets to do the rest? As for your questions..."
He thought it over in his head. Shin held his chin. "I do need to practice it, but I'm pretty sure I can do everything at once. It's just, when I'm using it, I can't seem to focus on shards as far away as usual. So I guess it reduces my overall range. Still pretty useful. I'm going to have to make up about a billion different forms, like some sort of anime playa."
"By the way." Plop. The crane landed on Kealey's head, shards vanishing. He pointed a bent finger towards her smugly. "You've got something on your head."

Kealey had to resist the urge to playfully swat Shin when he commented on the benefits she was supposedly taking for granted. She wanted to point out that she thought that was in fact one of the perks...but he was still talking so she held her tongue.
He thought he could do everything at once, but it reduced the range at which he could create things. It was basically a trade-off, personal defense at the loss of a bit of functionality.
Personally, Keaely valued the defense more than anything, but she kept quiet about that for the moment too.
The crane landed on her head, and the blond looked up with her eyes, unable to see anything but her bangs. Up she reached, cradling the little bird for a moment before setting it down and starting on another.
"I like the idea of the defense. Isn't it hard for you to keep track of things at a distance without getting dizzy anyway?" she said, trying to word her point in a way that didn't simply sound like a nagging, worried girlfriend trying to be overprotective.
"And I'll be excited to see some of these, when you're better."
As to the rest. Kealey finished her second crane and cast Shin a lopsided grin.
"And what happens when the student surpasses the master?"

And, and, and.
Shin answered em in reverse order.
"When the student surpasses the master, they get a kiss. And the best offense is a good defense. And I don't really like making a billion shards all at once any more, since shard drills like I used to make sometimes make me want to throw up. The main loss is shard bullets. Which I've been working on at the shooting range. And can fire off pretty well, now. Been working on increasing my range with the ol spirit gun for a while now. Hoping to break 30 feet."
There. All questions neatly answered. He started folding a crane for fun.

Kealey nodded her head to the answers Shin gave her. He'd obviously been working and thinking about these things a lot lately. She made a mental note to ask more about these things. Knowing that Shin had been practicing, that he was really working on everything possible to make himself prepared to fight, made her feel better. Then again, Kealey thought, she should have known he'd do those things in the first place. She had to have faith. Faith in the fact that Shin knew what he could handle...and faith in herself.
"I'll have to come with you some time. I'd like to see all of that."
Another crane took momentary flight, then landed on the bed with its cousins.
"You'd better hurry up with that." she said, nodding towards the crane in his hands, "Or you're gonna owe me that kiss."
Starting another crane, a thought occurred to Kealey. Something that had occurred to her a few times in the past, but something she'd never actually spoken of.
