The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Jorge
Jorge yawned heavily. The day was a lazy one. His first morning off from work in forever and he could not even see Gemma. He had tried to call her to see if he could see her for awhile but she unfortunately did not pick up the line. He had assumed that she was either busy with one of her students or some of the other amounts of paperwork that littered her office the last time he saw her. The detective had contemplated just getting up and going over there, but he would hate to arrive unannounced and distract her from much needed work. So instead he found another way to entertain himself until she could return his call.
Sitting back in his sofa, the detective yawned again as he flipped the page of the massive volume of Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and smirked as he read. The book was old, slightly yellowed with dog-earred pages. All around the spaces on the page, there was handwritten notes…his own. It was a copy from his college days so there were many references to symbolism or literature movements written throughout. But he still managed to make a note now and then.
Old habits die hard.
He was about to flip the page again when there was a knocking on his door. Looking up, Jorge glanced at his watch. It was eight in the morning! Who could possibly be coming by? Arching a brow, he set his book down on the coffee table, got up and moved over to the door.
Dressed in just a black tank top and loose pair of gray, Miami Dolphin’s sweatpants, Jorge leaned forward to look through the peephole. There was Ms. Kim, a young woman who actually lived in the apartment directly across from his. She was a nice young woman, Chinese he thought he remembered her say, and lived by herself. After a falling out with her husband Jerome, she moved into his apartment complex to raise her daughter Lane by herself.
Jorge had to admit that he never saw a woman work so hard in his life.
With her 13 month old child, Lane, in her arms she looked a little flustered as she knocked again. Jorge gracefully opened the door in the middle of it.
“Ms. Kim,” he smiled warmly. “Everything okay?”
The twenty-five year old woman smiled and blushed a little at the sight of Jorge. It was no secret that she had the smallest of crushes on the detective, but it was completely harmless. Besides, she had seen Gemma around his apartment enough times to know that he was taken. Still though, her cheeks blushed as she cleared her throat and patted her baby girl’s back who looked at Jorge.
Lane was adorable to say the least. Thin black hair and dressed in a little pink skirt and polka-dotted top. She carried a tiny plastic toy octopus with her that had a red bow.
“Jorge,” Ms. Kim said relieved. “I’m sorry for knocking so early, I was praying that you had the day off.”
“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I just…I need the HUGEST favor in the world. My babysitter (SO not my babysitter anymore) has gone AWOL and I can’t take the day off work.” She hefted her child up again and smiled at Jorge. “C-Can you please watch Lane, just for today? I know this is so last minute but you would be my lifesaver. And, you know, you’re a cop and I trust you. Please?”
Jorge watched the pleading look in her eyes while he tried to fight off the dread that was growing in his belly. He looked at Lane. The little girl watched him with the most curious eyes. It was not that he did not like kids, he love kids, but he really just did not know how to act around them. Most of the time kids simply stared at him before they descended into tears. It was so complex that he really did not know how to read them. Which was what freaked him out the most.
But the look of desperation on Ms. Kim’s face was enough to shatter any resistance he had about not doing this. With a sigh and nod, he smiled at both her and the child.
“Um..y-yeah. Sure…I’ll be here all da-“
“Thank you!”
Jorge was not exactly sure what happened next. There was a blur of movement. The sudden revelation of two duffle bags as they were being brought into his apartment and then…there was a child in his arms. Jorge looked down at the chubby face of Lane as she peered back at him…and then smacked her toy octopus against his chest before drooling on his arm.
“Ugh,” he blinked confusedly. “What time do you get off wo-“ he looked up and saw that she was already gone and he was staring at an empty hall.
Closing his door, Jorge sighed as he looked at the child again, then glanced down to see Lizzie, his old English bulldog staring up at him with a slight tilt of her head.
Woof, Lizzie announced.
Jorge sighed and nodded in agreement with her. “Yes Lizzie. I am a total pushover.”

Gemma decided to take a day off.
It had been a while. As usual. She had a lot of stuff (and a lot of kids) to deal with; preparing for holidays, running errands, kind of running the school since Sam was on and off missions. by the time she realized it, she had gone a week without seeing her boyfriend. That simply did not do.
Leaving the Mansion in relative peace and quiet, she drove over to Jorge's apartment. She vaguely remembered that he had the day off; if she was wrong, she could always just take lunch to his workplace. But she really hoped he was at home. The could have a nice, relaxing day, and spend some quality time together.
Every once in a while one needs those quiet, peaceful days...

Jorge
And so…the staring contest began.
Stare…
Stare…
Blink-Blink…
“You…win again,” the detective said with an awkward laugh.
Jorge sat back on floor, his deep brown eyes looked forward. His legs crossed Indian-style, the man absentmindedly scratched the stubble that covered his throat. He shifted his weight a bit as he looked off to the side, really just…unsure of what he should be doing next.
Across from him, standing and holding onto the sofa for support was the young Lane. Her legs a little shaky as she tried to keep upright, she patted the couch curiously before she turned and glanced her curious eyes back onto Jorge…then back to the sofa. She was done looking at him for now. A screamed a little gurgle as she bounced her octopus over and over again on the cushion and gurgled more to herself rather than to Jorge.
The detective simply shrugged and decided to join the conversation.
“That’s…very interesting,” Jorge said with an odd chuckle and reached over, scratching the back of his own head. At his side, say Lizzie who was watching Lane like a hawk. And then glanced over to Jorge and grunted at him. Jorge looked harmed. “What? I don’t see you coming up with any bright ideas.”
Lizzie woofed again before she moved onto her feet and trotted off towards the bedroom.
“Coward! I won’t forget this Lizzie!” he said with a sigh and then turned back to Lane. She was now gnawing on the cushion. Wonderful. He sighed as he reached over and picked up one of the duffle bags and pulled it close. Unzipping the top he began to rummage through it: toys, diapers, food…where were the damn instructions? Don’t children come with instructions. He shook his head as he pulled out Lane’s blanket. “Well kiddo,” Jorge muttered as he spoke to her before lifting his head. “Looks like it’s just going to be you an m-“
As he looked up he noticed that the kid was already gone, vanish! A sense of dread came over him as he jumped to his feet and circled around the couch. Unfortunately his sudden movement started Lane to the point that she released the sofa and fell back onto her rump.
Pause.
Lane looked at Jorge.
Jorge looked at Lane.
Tears welled up in Lane’s eyes.
And Jorge cringed…
“Whhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!” she cried.
“Oh no, no, no, no,” Jorge whispered as he leaned down and picked up the obviously upset child. Gently he rest her against his chest as he patted her back, trying not to go deaf from the screaming that resounded in his ear. “Oh hunny, shhhhh, it’s okay. It’s okay, baby,” he said as calmly as he could and continued to pat her back. She clung onto him, and still wailed.
Meanwhile, Jorge scoured the sofa for her plastic octopus…

Gemma walked up to Jorge's door and she was about to knock when she heard the baby cry.
Mother instincts never die. Even if it is not your baby, the moment you hear that unmistakeable sound, your whole being is alert and ready to jump in to save the day. Gemma blinked.
Maybe the sound was coming from the neighbors.
...
Nope, it was definitely coming from Jorge's room.
Why didn't he tell me I'm a mother?...
Also, the door was not properly closed. Pushing it open with one hand just a crack, Gemma peeked inside to see what was going on. Maybe Jorge had visitors. Or a baby just randomly crawled in. Maybe a stork missed an address.

Jorge
Okay. Jorge was a trained police officer. He’s been shot at, stabbed, thrown across rooms, through walls, even punched by a massive set of hands. Jorge was by no means a meek or weak man. He knew how to care for himself, how to run into a burning building, throw himself into the path of a bullet, the man was experienced enough to know handle himself in a hundred-and-one situations. And yet…it seemed as if every single experience he had did not account for a damned thing now. The man was up the creak without a paddle and drifted with the current down the gates of Hell.
Well…maybe not THAT melodramatic. But it was insane.
After the falling incident, Jorge finally managed to get Lane to calm down. With gentle shushing and careful back pats, the sniffling child managed to get worked down to a gentle cooing. Jorge felt a twinge of relief as he softly rocked the child in his arms. He smirked silently to himself walked around his apartment with the child who clung to him so desperately. He wondered if she missed her mother, or if she just wanted her toy back?
He glanced at the couch. He was fairly certain the octopus had managed to slip underneath when she fell back onto her butt. Unfortuantely he just not got her calm enough that he did not want to risk upsetting her again by setting her down.
“Shhhh,” he whispered soothingly again. “It’s okay hunny. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” he sighed heavily.
Pacing his apartment, Jorge tried to look for some way to set the girl down so that he could get her octopus back. Lizzie of was no help. Apparently his once faithful bulldog had decided to sit this one out. The detective sighed at a loss for words. He was drawing a blank…that is…until that most horrid and ungodly scent hit his nose…
A glance to Lane and he groaned.
“You’re killing me, Lane. You’re literally killing me,” he said as he stepped over to the diaper bag.
The next minute or two were a blur. Between the girl’s struggling form, her kicking, her crying and her laughing (and mixed with the scent of absolute foulness that thankfully decorated the air) Jorge simply did not know how he did it. By the time he was done, he had a loose diaper on Lane’s bottom, he was covered in baby powder and there was an ominous wet spot on his tank top.
That…he never wanted to speak of it again.
“Ooookay hunny,” he muttered as he carried her back to the sofa and gentle set her onto a sitting position on the floor. “Let Uncle Jorge get Mr. Octopus for you, okay?”
He eyed her closely and upon seeing that she was just going to sit still, he stuck his head underneath the couch and reached out, searching for that octopus. It looked mockingly at him from just out of his reach. But the man reached and reached until finally he managed to slip his fingers. Then…finally…success! He grabbed the toy. The sounds of glorious triumph echoed in his ears.
But as Jorge pulled the toy yet, he turned to present it to Lane..and she was gone.
“Aw, come on,” he groaned as he shot up and found her staggering away, crying as her diaper fell off her rear. “Hey, come back here!” he announced as he moved onto his feet. “Cooome on Lane, I have money! It’s all yours!”

It was just too much fun to watch. Or too horrible. Gemma was not sure which. But she kept on watching.
Jorge with a baby, now that was adorable. Jorge with a baby that came straight from hell, even better. Of course, all babies come straight from hell. Some people just have more experience with them.
She saw her chance to enter when she saw the little girl running away in the general direction of the bedroom, sans diapers. Stepping gracefully through the door, she intercepted Lane, picking her up, and apparently surprising her speech(and cry)less.
"Theeere you go baby" she chuckled, glancing at Jorge over the tiny shoulders "Did I miss a memo about you becoming a father, honey?..."

Lane turned out to be a speedy little devil, and a loud one at that. But the detective was not going to quit chasing her. Obviously shown as he stumbled and followed. He nearly slipped on that diaper that tumbled off her little keister but he did not allow that to keep him from chasing her. It was when she was nearly in his grasp that suddenly she was snatched up from the ground by another set of arms. For a second Jorge panicked because he saw the open door and wondered who it was that had suddenly broke into his apartment and kidnapped the child!
But following that dark, smooth skin, his panic melted away into relief as he stopped to catch his breath and saw Gemma standing before him, holding Lane gently in her arms.
>> "Theeere you go baby…Did I miss a memo about you becoming a father, honey?..."
He smirked and shook his head.
Yeah, he would never hear the end of this one…
Shaking his head he walked up to Gemma and the little mischief maker that squirmed around in her arms. He held up a plastic toy that was in the shape of an octopus and the sight of it immediately caught Lane’s eye. She gurgled as she reached out, grabbing at the air to have her toy back. He smirked as he handed her treasure back. Immediately Lane set about trying to shove the toy in her mouth and only succeeded in slathering it with saliva.
Jorge chuckled as he tried to pat baby powder off of his tank top. “Well I did send it carrier pigeon, maybe it waiting for you at the mansion.” he sighed as he leaned over and kissed his sight-for-sore-eyes girlfriend on the cheek. “My neighbor needed a sitter last minute. And of course being the kind-hearted individual that I am, I agreed,” he said as he turned to look at Lane’s inquisitive eyes. The young girl was switching her gaze back and forth between Jorge and Gemma. “This, is Miss Lane Kim. Child and apparently future girl-gone-wild,” he sighed as he leaned down to pick up the diaper that had fallen off her rear. He couldn’t see why they didn’t stay on (apparently he was too blind to see that he forgot to peel off the plastic from the adhesive strips). He looked up at Gemma, both relieved that she was here but also a little confused. “Hun, what’re you doing here? Not, that I’m not grateful, obviously I am, but I thought you were working?”

She could see pure relief on Jorge's face. It looked like she arrived just in time,
>>“My neighbor needed a sitter last minute. And of course being the kind-hearted individual that I am, I agreed. This, is Miss Lane Kim. Child and apparently future girl-gone-wild,”
Gemma chuckled at that, looking at the baby who was nomming the toy with all the enthusiasm of her young age.
"Nice to meet you, Lane."
>>"Hun, what’re you doing here? Not, that I’m not grateful, obviously I am, but I thought you were working?”
She chuckled. "I decided to take the day off and hang out with my boyfriend. I did not expect the baby though."
Obviously. No one expects the baby.
"All right, let's get that diaper back on" she decided, taking it out of Jorge's hand as she walked past him to the couch "There's a good girl."
In this case, experience made all the difference in the world. Gemma had the diaper safe and secure in its place in no time flat, and Lane didn't even resist. Smiling, she let Lane sit on the floor, and looked up at Jorge "Caught you by surprise, huh" she grinned

>> "I decided to take the day off and hang out with my boyfriend. I did not expect the baby though."
He chuckled. “Trust me, I’m was seriously just as surprised as you were,” he said with a small sigh and he watched Gemma handle the young girl. “It as a nice surprise though. I’m, you know, sorry that you came over here to this mess.”
As he said that last part he referenced to the rest of his apartment. Couple of magazines and his book had been knocked off the table, the makeshift “changing station” he had managed to create out of another coffee table was covered in baby powder as well had splotches of diaper rash cream. The detective had never thought his apartment could get this messy with only a single child. But the detective apparently had a streak of being proved wrong time and time again. So it should not have been of surprise.
Then…Gemma had snatched the diaper from his hand and brought Lane to his couch and proceeded to do exactly what Gemma was best at…caring.
>> "All right, let's get that diaper back on…There's a good girl."
He smirked a little as he crossed his arms over his chest and casually walked up behind her. She engrossed with both changing and entertaining Lane while she quickly fixed up his own mistake with the diaper. Jorge was bewildered at the speed at which Gemma moved that he smiled. This was his girlfriend in her element. Not that he was being condescending, no, far from it. He was praising this woman’s ability to take charge of a situation like this with little thought. She had the caring and attention of a woman who was experienced.
For a moment he just grinned a little as his find flashed to possible scenarios of Gemma with her own two kids she raised. He wondered if she saw them every time she did something like this.
>> "Caught you by surprise, huh"
“Huh?” he jumped slightly, shaken from his thoughts. Looking down he saw Lane sitting on the floor, still gnawing on her favorite toy before she held it out to offer it him. Slobber-side first, obviously. He smirked at Gemma’s comment and nodded. “You can definitely say that,” he said as he took the toy from the girl’s tiny hand with a grateful nod. “Thank you Sweetie.”
Lane looked between both him and Gemma inquisitively before she held out her hand for the toy again.
Jorge grinned as he kneeled down and handed the toy back. Lane screeched with joy and giggled as she received her toy. A smile still on his face, he glanced up to Gemma and noticed her looking at him…oddly…

She watched Jorge play with the baby. She seemed to be cheerful as a properly entertained baby can be. Hands on her hips, the watched the two of them, the big bad cop and the tiny little girl, and smiled.
>> "What?"
Jorge was good with kids, even if he did not think so. He would deserve to have one of his own... Gemma stopped that trail of thoughts. It was a discussion for another time... She shook her head, still smiling "Nothing. I can see you liek each other." she chuckled. The octopus got offered and returned once again. Gemma sat down and took a look at the duffle bags.

>> "Nothing. I can see you like each other."
Jorge smirked as he turned back to face baby Lane. The little girl had once more handed him her favorite octopus. This must have been her favorite game. Jorge was only so happy to play along so long she did not slip into yet another crying fit. But it seemed that each time she handed him the toy and he handed it back, it put the largest of smiles on Lane’s face. She giggled and seemed surprised each time it was held out to her when she asked for it.
For a moment there, Jorge became lost in his own thoughts as he sat in front of the child and just watched her as she took her toy back for a final time and continued to gnaw on it. As she did so, her deep brown eyes locked onto the detective’s and the two of them simply sat there, staring curiously at each other.
Jorge smiled back at her and she grinned in response. There was a flash in which Jorge imagine what it would be like when he had his own child…
But he paused there and shooed the thought away when he remembered Gemma standing next to him. Now was not the time to be thinking about it. It was a conversation to definitely have on a later day. At the moment, he had a child to care for…
>> "Has she eaten something yet?..."
He blinked as he looked up to see Gemma sitting on his couch and rifling through the duffle bag. He sighed as he scratched the back of his head and reached out with his other hand to let Lane inspect his free hand rather thoroughly.
Jorge began to feel bad because he really had no idea. Is that something he should have remembered to ask Ms. Kim before she ran off for work? Should he have been able to glean that kind of information from the young child? After all, despite the fact that he was awkward around the youngling, he could read people rather well. But for some reason the child was a mystery.
A glance to Gemma and he could only shrug his shoulders in a quasi ashamed away.
“I-I don’t know. I haven’t fed her yet and her mother didn’t say if she ate before she dropped her off.” Now the detective was feeling rather stupid. He gnawed on the inside of his cheek as Lane looked between the two of them…then offered her saliva covered octopus to Gemma.

"All right" Gemma smiled, accepting the octopus and wiggling it around in a most amusing fashion (judged by Lane's giggling) before she handed it back "We'll need to feed her at some point, but I think we are okay for now. If she's hungry, trust me, we're going to know it."
Kids were nice that way. Thed let you know when they wanted something. Loud and clear.
Gemma settled down next to the two of them on the carpet and smiled.

>> "All right…We'll need to feed her at some point, but I think we are okay for now. If she's hungry, trust me, we're going to know it."
Oh he didn’t like the sound of that. But judging by the amount of crying that Lane had done earlier, he was more than certain that that is what Gemma was referring to. He already dealt first hand with the decibels that child’s lungs could reach so he had no doubt that she would let them know when she was actually hungry. It did not take that much of a rocket scientist to actually figure out what she would do to let them know. Jorge anticipated that he would more than likely go deaf again.
But, judging by how the child giggled and played with Gemma, he had a feeling that they would be able to avert a disastrous explosion for the time being. He smirked as he watched his girlfriend expertly keep the child entertained before joining him at his side.
>> "So, is this your first time babysitting?..."
The cop actually blushed.
Jorge did not like to be caught unawares and apparently Gemma had walked into a situation that made him appear to be an absolute novice. Appear, hell, he was an absolute novice at this. Jorge really did not know the first thing about caring for a child as young as Lane. He knew nothing about diapers and baby food. That is no to say that the detective did not like kids. Of course he did! He always had a soft spot in his heart for them, especially those he stumbled across that were living in the streets. But unfortunately the detective had never had to actually care for one.
He smirked a little at Gemma’s comment before he placed his hands behind him and leaned back on them. As he did so, he watched as Lane curiously babbled to the toy octopus before she dropped it and attempted to crawl away, closer to the sofa.
Lizzie peeked out from the hallway. Snorted. Then retreated back into the bedroom.
“Is it that obvious?” he asked with a small smile. “My sister doesn’t have kids. And my job pretty much kept any neighbors from asking. Me having a gun around the house and all,” he said with a nod. “Honestly, I’ve watched a couple of my younger cousins before, but they were 7 and 9 years-old at the time. Mainly I just fed them, took them to a bookstore or two, once an amusement park, but…” he chuckled slightly as he turned to make sure that the crawling Lane was still within view. She was…attempting to gnaw on one of his couch cushions. “…that is a far cry from this.” He chuckled as he moved over to Lane’s side to keep her from swallowing his cushion whole.
By the time he got there, Lane had relinquished the now wet pillow into Jorge’s grasp and giggled as she wobbly ran in Gemma’s direction. At least now the two adults at the girl quarantined between the pair of them…
“I’m sorry, Gemma,” he said with a truly apologetic tone. “I did not mean for your day-off to turn into babysitting. I mean, if you want, you can still run off and enjoy your day. I might be able to take it from h—“

With the occasional diaper change." she chuckled "I remember my kids being this age... makes you feel like they are never ever going to grow up. And then they do."
They did. Gemma loved her kids, grown up or not.
>>“I’m sorry, Gemma, I did not mean for your day-off to turn into babysitting. I mean, if you want, you can still run off and enjoy your day. I might be able to take it from h—“
She winced, seeing Jorge get bonked on the forehead with an octopus. She couldn't stiffle a laugh.
"Nah, I really don't mind staying." she shook her head "I wanted to spend the day with you, a baby will not stop me from doing that. Besides, this is getting quite amusing...."

Jorge
Jorge held his tongue since he did not want to curse in front of the…tender…little angel, that Lane was. Reaching up, he rubbed the spot where the plastic octopus had nailed him so perfectly. Lane apparently had quite the arm on her. Without realizing it, the child had struck honest and true against Jorge. It was a rather perfect blow and one that kept him off guard. He sighed as he removed his hand from the sore spot and saw that indeed there was glow red mark now on his head.
Apparently Lane saw the humor in this; as did his girlfriend Gemma…

“Hearty, har, har,” he smirked in response.
The detective shook his head as he waggled his finger at Lane. It was probably a rather silly looking response from him but Lane only seemed to enforce this as she giggled and reached out, trying to get her chubby little hands to grab onto Jorge’s finger. Once she managed it, he had to chuckle and grin at the little gem of a human being. He sighed as he looked up to Gemma.
“Alright, hun, I tried to give you a way out,” he chuckled. He had a feeling that both Gemma and Lane had some secret understanding that Jorge was to be their target for the rest of the day. That certainly was not going to go well. He sighed as he turned and pulled over one of the child’s duffle bags. “Well, alright, let’s see what mommy packed up for you, shall we, Miss Lane?”
As he said this he began to pull out a couple of things: containers of baby food, milk formula, children’s banana cookies, plenty of stuff for the child to eat. Even a couple of toys. He removed a pair of very large, squishy dice and immediately this set off a squeal of delight from Lane’s lips. He smirked as he held them out to her and grinned at Gemma.
“Does this, you know, feel weird? Helping take care of a child, again?” he asked. He knew that her own kids were very grown up and that the majority of the students at the mansion were adolescents.
