It was a full moon outside as Tses made her way through the city, relaxing in the comforting glow of the nightlight of the sky. She hadn't been in New York long, but she already was starting to feel at home here. The city had a fast pace, and even at night people moved around in large numbers. For the past few years, she maintained a delicate balance between work and pleasure. But there were still dangerous tensions she felt growing between the coexisting communities.
Tses didn't really have a side in the whole situation. She did what benefited her, and tried not to get involved. Sure, she tracked down a few mutants, and played the roll of a villain on many levels. But it wasn't a malicious action. She just needed a way to live in a world that was survival of the fittest.
While she was a mutant, few people ever realized her abilities. With her abilities with hand to hand combat, and the training she was getting with computers, she didn't feel the need to use her powers as a crutch. The mutants she caught most often were the ones who were one entity with their identity as a mutant: inseparable from their identity as a person. Tses didn't want to be like that. She wanted to control her powers, not be controlled by them.
It didn't mean she didn't love her powers. She enjoyed the feeling she got reaching into the moon and taking its energy. She loves the way it tickled as it rolled across her wrist and condensed in her palms. But it was a dangerous love, one she had to be careful of, or risk being caught in the growing anti-mutant tensions.
Yet, on nights like tonight, when the moon was full overhead, she felt them prickle on the tips of her fingers, eager to be released. So Tses walked, eyes open and ears ready. If life presented an opportunity to 'stretch' her powers muscles, then she would take it.
A barely visible Shade stared up at the bright full moon. He hated full moons. It was like a night when the sun did not set, limiting his ability to maneuver in the dark. Although the the giant glowing orb was not enough to cancel out the shadow mutant's abilities completely, it did cause Shade to appear as a fuzzy outline in the night. And since he was not completely invisible, the night stalker could not teleport. Only when he hid in the darkness behind a building or car was he able to accomplish true invisibilty. And only then could he teleport.
It was a rather annoying perdicament for Shade who was used to unrestricted night access. Luckily, this problem only occured once a month. Most of the time, he would spend a night like this in the Sanctuary, but he had had to work tonight. And now he had to get home. Without his usual mode of transportation, Shade had to walk the five miles back to the Sanctuary. Well, he could take some short cuts, but not many.
Being in a grumbly mode, Shade was walking with his arms crossed across his chest as he stared down at the sidewalk. He wasn't attention, and it would be a miracle if anyone was able to spot the shadow mutantunless they were looking as he mostly just a moving outline of himself. Suddenly, his shoulder struck something hard, yet soft at the same time. It was a young woman. The impact jerked Shade out of his trance, but only to increase the rage he was already feeling.
"Hey, watch where you are walking, punk!" Shade shot back, not really glancing at the person he had ran into. With a grumble, he continued on hsi way.
Tses was surprised she didn't hear the approaching stranger, and even more surprised he got close enough to hit her. Normally, she was good at responding and reacting to people around her, but this person seemed to appear out of nowhere. Staggering slightly, she swirled on the stranger, but before she could open her mouth he snarled at her.
Watch where I'm walking?! Tses glared, and the moon fueled her irritation, giving her hands an unwilling green glow around the fingertips. She could feel the energy fizzling against her skin, and she tried to suppress it. She hated revealing her powers, especially when it was against her will. When she tried to face the stranger, it was hard to make out his form until the light from her powers passed across him momentarily. Irritated, she spat a profane insult at his back.
Shade did not notice the sudden flare of light in the palms of the woman's hands as he was faced the other way. He was still incredibly annoyed over the incident, but it was over with and he could get back to hating the moonlight as he made the slow walk back to the Sanctuary. However, the woman had to say something. She just had to say something. What had she called him? An inconsiderit, pale, little freak!? Something like that right? The shadow stalker had not heard properly over his own yelling.
However, the words did cause Shade to stop in his tracks. He licks his teeth as he thought really hard about how much he didn't really want to kill this woman tonight. A second ticked by. Well, that was all the time Shade needed to think about not killing this woman. Time to kill her. A blade slid out of his hand's shadow as he wound his fingers around the handle. The midngiht black blade stood out in the gleaming moonlight. The ghostly appearing mutant turned on his heels and posed to throw the knife. However, he suddenly froze as he stared at the glowing hands of the woman.
Tses felt her pulse race as the stranger turned around, and for an instant, she thought about her options. She could make a tactical retreat, and avoid confrontation, she could pretend this situation hadn't happened. However, the moonlight in her veins seemed to distort her thinking, and she wanted nothing more than to use her powers. When the stranger turned, her battle instincts took over, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
Her powers condensed in the palm of her hand, and when she saw the shadowy shape of a knife in the moonlight, she responded the only way she knew how. With a short jump backwards, she released the medium sized orb and let it go sailing towards the stranger. For a few moments, she saw the glimmer of light against his form, oddly distorting the way he seemed to look, and then it exploded, and she crouched ready to defend herself. Her hand drifted towards the knife she kept hidden strapped to her leg for backup, not willing to rely on her powers alone for defense.
The front of Shade's body flashed into view as the light from the glowing ball smashed into his chest and exploded in a burst of light. The shadow mutant was blasted off his feet and smashed into a trash can, overturning the container and spilling its contents on to the street. The impact knocked the wind out of him, and as he struggled to get his bearing back, the shadow of a mutant could be seen trying to regain his posture. Slipping slightly on the loose garbage, Shade rose to a kneeling position.
"That was not a smart idea." Shade said in a rasping voice, before spitting to remove the taste of blood from his mouth. Had he bite his tongue when he impacted that trash can? He couldn't recall, but his tongue did hurt now. From his position, the shadow stalker was able to get a better view of his assailant. Balls of light glowed from the person's hand. That must have been the source of the glowing ball of light. The discovery that the person he had smashed into was a mutant had completely surprised him. He didn't really have a clue on what the mutant did. All he knew was that it was bright and hurt like hell. Two things that Shade did not like at all.
The young woman had dropped into a defense pose, prepared for a fight. Something metallic glinted in her hand due to the moonlight, a knife maybe. Shade would have to careful. Drawing a blade of his own from the darkness, the shadow mutant whipped a blade towards the woman as he rose into a run. Another blade formed in his hand as he sprinted towards the woman, hoping to tackle her and take the fight to the ground.
Tses was experienced in hand to hand combat, but fighting another mutant was something rare and hard to prepare for. Each mutant had their own special abilities, and the best way to defend yourself was by learning how to adapt, and quickly receiving and processing information about your opponent. From the first few exchanges, Tses noted how the figure faded into the shadows, but reappeared in the light. One of the best defenses she could think of was trying to keep her powers 'loose' across her hands, maintaining the small glow it afforded. Side stepping, she tried to keep in the light of the moon, which, while it revealed her more, she hoped would keep the playing field event.
She heard the man say something, his voice hostile and odd sounding in the dark, and inwardly, she wondered herself if her actions were correct. She didn't second guess herself for long, though, because distractions would only get you killed.
Knife in hand, Tses waited, and as the stranger charged she counter attacked, letting her armed hand rise to deflect his blade, and letting her free hand strike with a fist towards her assailants face. While her powers did nothing before they condensed, fighting in the dark against a man who seemed part of the shadows didn't feel as smart. On her arm, she thought she felt a prickle of pain, but it was hard to tell if he had another weapon that hit her shoulder.
Shade charged the smaller woman and swung his arm with the blade down to drive the black knife into his opponent's shoulder. It collided with the metallic knife in the hand of the young woman. Suddenly, a punch was sent flying towards his face. Shade tried to move out of the way, but his momentum was too great to outcome. All he could do was move his neck to the side as the blow caught him in the jaw.
His vision blurred for a moment after contact as his brain rocked in his skull. Unable to see, he threw his free hand towards the abdomen of the woman before driving his body forward, hoping to knock the woman off balance. In his fit of rage, he was being rather sloppy, not really thinking about his moves. All he really cared about was hurting this woman, because she had irritated him on the wrong day. It was just a way to relieve his anger and stress.
Tses felt things quickly going downhill, physically and figuratively. One danger of close range combat was the difference in size, and it was apparent in the first few moments of contact. While she was proud of how she reacted when things started, she wasn't sure she would be quite as quick on her feet as things progressed.
Her punch connected, but the strangers response was sloppy and unpredictable. The rage induced blow he sent towards her abdomen made her successful blow to his face dimmed. Off balance from her punch, his attack sent her falling backwards, and she curled her body instinctively to best take the impact of the ground, making sure both knives were well away from her body, driving them above her head. Hitting the ground, she swung her leg up, hoping to catch him in the stomach as he came down with her. At the same time, her powers coiled into an orb in her fist, and she released rolling quickly to the right.
In this enraged state, Shade was actually rather enjoying himself. His punch had connected and he had knocked the young woman to ground. Time to finish her off! He leapt towards her as the blades were dragged over her head. However, the shadow mutant had no notion that Tses had fallen into a guard position until it was too late. Shade's abs contacted as the young woman's heel impacted his gut. For a brief moment, the shadow mutant was suspended in the air above the girl with the woman's boot being the only thing stopping hims from crashin to the ground. Shade's eyes widened as his body became completely visible again from the young lady forming another ball of energy in her hand.
Instinctively, the shadow mutant rolled out of the way as the ball blasted past him and shot into the sky. However as he rolled off the young woman's foot, he came crashing down with the only place to land being on top of the woman, if she was not fast enough to roll out of the way. He made sure to keep his blade pushed out overhaed so he would not land on top of it and accidently stab himself. However, Shade did not know where he was going to land.
The battle was slightly sloppy, and she was nearly squished by the falling mutant. Perhaps squished wasn't the best word, but unfortunately used as a landing point could be accurate. Her last roll managed to get herself mostly out of the way, but it left her face down, with her knife hand pinned by the strangers and body. She tried to get a knee under her, building another charge around her hand, and snarling at the stranger.
"You know, a simple apology would have been so much easier." She said, trying to suppress the feeling of danger in her gut.
Shade rolled to avoid the ball of energy shot in his direction, only to land directly on top of the woman assailant. She must have tried to avoid by rolling to the side as the falling mutant fell onto her back. It was a rather awkward position for both of them. Shade had his arm twisted up behind the womna's head, and she had her arm pinned into the ground.
"Apology? You were the one who shot him!" Shade snapped back as the light began to glow again. He knew she must be trying to blast him again. Franctic to avoid another concussion from the blast, Shade tried to slide his pinned hand out from behind her head. As she struggled to move beneath him, it shifted slightly and the shadow stalker was able to free it, but he lost his blade in the process. Now focusing on the glowing hand of the female assaillant, Shade maneuever to try and avoid the line of fire. He tried to wrap an arm into her elbow crook so he took aim the hand in a safe direction, away from him.
Tses couldn't really throw the orb at him with her arm in the position it was, so she was left with the awkward decision of holding it, and trying to get free, or dropping it and trying to get out of the way. If she didn't move fast, either decision would literally blow up in her face. squirming, she got her knees under her, and tried to wiggle her knife arm free. If only she were bigger, she could knock him off, but this was why she tried to fight with better leverage.
Meanwhile, she felt the uncomfortable prickling in her hand of holding her powers too long, and resorted to rolling it off to the side, where both of them would feel the blast when it went off. It only took a moment for it to explode.
The glow were brighter as the ball of energy grew larger and larger. For a moment, Shade thought the thing might explode in her hand. However, she squirmed underneath him and managed to roll the ball out onto the pavement...and under a parked car.
"Sh*t!" Shade exclaimed as anticipated what was going to happen next. Trying to get enough distance between him and the car, Shade tucked and rolled away, dragging the blonde haired mutant with him. Rolling again, the energy ball exploded under the parked car, igniting the gas tank.
The entire street was lit up by the fiery inferno. All the car alarms on the block rang out as the shock wave washed over them. People's lights quickly flashed on in their houses and deserted their residences to see what had happened. Not to mention, Shade was certain someone had already called law enforcement. He tried to disentangle himself from the energy ball shooting mutant. Hopefully she would understand they had no important things to worry about now.
Tses didn't expect this encounter to go how it had. Rather, she expected to end up bleeding in the street somewhere, slit open by the shadow mutant. But the sound of the explosion caused her whole world to change direction, in several ways. First, she was dragged a few feet by the stranger, then the noise made her head ring with pain, and the sound was loud enough to knock her balance off a bit.
She could see the mutant mouthing something at her, the most she caught of it was the word 'crazy', but turning towards the street she filled in her own blanks. This mutant was no longer her primary worry, and there were other things to do.... like avoid getting arrested. Jumping to her feet, she turned and stumbled further away from the flaming car, trying to keep her feet under her.
"If you hadn't tried to stab me none of this would have happened." She snarled, sheathing her knife back in her shorts. She could barely hear her voice, but the sound was coming back a little.
