Through the ruins of the former New York City, a strange sight fell upon those people who were still hiding in the shadows and peeking out through the cracks in the buildings. Resources were precious things in the ruins of this city; so it was of little wonder that they would take notice of a large wave of water pouring through the streets. But even more straight about this liquid was that fact that it seemed to have a mind of its own. It surged, it flowed, and turned corners, as if trying to separate itself from something far behind it. It was an odd sight indeed.
That, and the fact that there was a blonde woman floating inside, seemed catch people’s attention.
The wave of water that was Jorge Cervantes, surged onward, spilling over everything and doing its best to separate itself from the battle that was sure to begin far behind them. Jorge knew this woman, he knew her powers, so he correct in his tactic to separate her from the pack of Amazons. Sveta could have easily boosted all their powers to dangerous levels. With her contained, then it only evened the playing grounds.
Still though, that meant he would have to deal with the blonde himself. And, having lived in this world for three years, still remembering who most of these people were before the blast, it was not a conversation that he was looking forward to having.
Besides, he doubted that she was really going to want to talk.
Once Jorge was a safe distance away from the battleground, he suddenly surged forward and removed himself from around Sveta. The watery elemental sloshed forward, leaving a dripping wet blonde on the cracked, deserted highway, as he casually walked away. Slowly his the elemental took on a more humanoid shape. Within, it was clearing seen that Jorge’s clothes and gun were safely encapsuled inside a bubble he had created within his own body. As he stepped forward, the clothes and items fell to the ground, surprisingly dry.
Quickly the elemental shrunk down and sloshed into the clothes before reforming himself. The clothes-wearing humanoid began to take on a more defined shape until finally Jorge stood there, dressed as he was mere moments ago when he was at the standoff with the amazons. He sighed as he rested his hand on the holster, fingers grazing the hand grip as he eyed the blonde.
“You ready to talk about this like adults,” he started. “Or do I need to dunk your head underwater again, Svetlana?”
The wave of water carried her for what seemed like an eternity, making her become sure that the Sheriff was out to drown her this time. Was this really going to be how she had to die? After surviving for years with the Amazons, was she really about to be murdered by one of the most decent men she had ever known? Did she really become the bad guy in this tale?...
The wave dropped her on the grouns and pulled itself back to a human shape. Sveta remained on hands and knees, trambling and gasping deep gulps of air, water dripping from her hair and clothes. They were far enough from the rest of the fight to make the place eerily quiet, except for the blood drumming in her ears. Coughing up a mouthful of what she hoped was natural water and not Jorge, she finally scrambled back to her feet.
>>“You ready to talk about this like adults. Or do I need to dunk your head underwater again, Svetlana?”
She looked up at him, stray strands of wet hair dangling in her line of vision, hands reaching for her guns. She was not even sure they would work anymore, after soaking in water. Damn the cop.
"Want to talk about what?" she spat, trying to mask another coughing fit "What is dere left to talk about?"

Jorge stood still, strong, as he kept a distance between himself and Svetlana. He didn’t want to appear as if he was going to attack her at any second, but he also knew that he could not fully trust her. Not anymore, not like he used to before the blast happened. Back then she was sweet, kind, and only wanted to defend herself so that she could live a normal and happy life. It was what everyone wanted back then.
Now, though, the world has twisted her into a sick representation of what he remembered. Maybe it was just survival of the fittest, but he really didn’t like the way that she looked or acted right now. This was not the Svetlana he wanted to deal with, but he was stuck.
Still, though, he hoped, eventually, that he could get through to her…
>> "Want to talk about what?...What is dere left to talk about?"
He shook his head, his posture still remaining on the defensive in case she attempted to lunge or catch him off guard. If there was one thing he learned about Amazons, so far, is that you don’t let your guard down for even a second.
Fingers still resting on the handgrip, he tilted his head as he looked at her.
“How about that you are running around with a bunch of murderers and psychopaths?” he started. “That you are a part of a group that has killed and maimed innocent people just so that they could take what they wanted, instead of working for it like the rest of us?” he shook his head as he eyed her every moment. “Sveta, stop this. This isn’t you.”

"You have no idea" Sveta said, surprisingly calm, hands still hovering but not reaching for her guns. This man taught her how to shoot; he was probably still better at it than she was.
"You have no idea what it is like to be a girl alone in dis world. No powers to protect myself, no family. No one. People chase us, try to beat us, rape us, rob us. We have to look out for each other. We protect each other."
She knew he meant well. He always did. He was Sheriff Jorge Cervantes, with losses of his own. He was the good guy. But did that make her the villain?...

Jorge remained still. He prepared himself for another rant, another speech against why the way of the Town was wrong. It was speeches that he heard far too many times before and each and every time he was not moved. Nobody wanted to believe in civilization anymore, in the concept of society with rules and justice. They would rather descend to the level of animals and live off of the idea of the dog-eat-dog world. It was madness to consider this but some people simply cannot help their true nature.
But Svetlana…she was better than that. Or at least that was what he had hoped. Ever since he had started to teach her to shoot, she had shown herself as a level headed woman who wanted a normal life. And now, she had done a complete turnaround.
It nearly made him shed a tear thinking about what she had become…
>> "You have no idea what it is like to be a girl alone in dis world. No powers to protect myself, no family. No one. People chase us, try to beat us, rape us, rob us. We have to look out for each other. We protect each other."
“You protect each other by acting exactly like those barbarians you hate so much,” the detective said as he shook his head. “That food you and your group stole, you didn’t grow it, you didn’t earn it, you didn’t do anything for those people other than terrify them and harm or kill those that stood in your way. Those are not the actions to good people, Sveta.”
Jorge understood. He really did. He knew that this world was hellish and it was a far cry from the world they all still remembered. It was a dangerous place in which people needed to work together to survive but the way that Sveta and her band of amazons were doing it, it was just wrong.
He shook his head.
“I have no idea?” he asked a little darkly. The wound was still sore. “I not only lost any semblance of MY JOB, of MY LIFE’S WORK after the blast…” he would already feel the hot tears wanting to spring up but he forced them down through grinding teeth. “…I…I lost my wife. I lost my ****ing son! Don’t stand there and act like this world is cruel to you and your little band of amazons, alone!” he shook as his fists clenched. “We’ve ALL[/b] lost, we’ve ALL[/b] suffered! This world has changed us all, Sveta, but you don’t let it consume who you were entirely.”[/color]
The detective shook his head as his emotions began to be replaced with focus. He really didn’t know if Sveta would draw on him but just in case he was going to be prepared. Never in his dreams did he really think that he would be in a show down with this woman but in this day and age, he learned to doubt nothing. He sighed as he watched her.
“The town could have protected you, Sveta,” he said earnestly. “It still can. Please…don’t do this…”

Jorge understood. She was sure about that. She was not even questioning if he was right. She had always admired people who could stick to their ideals and morals in the middle of a disaster like that. Good for him. He didn't know everything.

She still had her hands on the guns. This was not a movie scene, this was real, and both of them knew the other was desperate. She felt sorry, truly, deeply sorry for the detective who lost his family in the blast. They were such a cute family, once upon a time. It would have broken her heart, but a this point, it was too much used to breaking.

Sveta took a deep breath, and didn't move. She didn't draw on him either. Not yet, anyway.
"You don't know everything." she said, more quietly "You can't promise dat. If you knew Maxine, you wouldn't promise that."
Nobody knew Maxine, really.
"People die for her. She keeps us alive, and anyone would die for her.. she has this... she feels safe. Strong. She is very strong."
It was important that he knew that.

The detective knew that she was right. He really couldn’t promise that everything would be okay if she abandoned Maxine and attempted to run with the Town. But at least with the Town, Sveta was free to be herself, the person she used to be, and not this monster that was running around in leather and trying to shake down hapless farmers out of their crops. It was absolutely ridiculous to think that the shy Russian woman he once knew could have fallen so far.
Then again, after the bombs fell, a lot of people became shades of their former selves. No one was able to escape into these days still their cheerful and former selves. But that didn’t mean that Sveta needed to succumb to the dark so easily. It was such a mistake.
But could he get through to her?
>> "People die for her. She keeps us alive, and anyone would die for her.. she has this... she feels safe. Strong. She is very strong."
The detective narrowed his eyes as he watched Sveta finger the guns that she wore. He knew she was a good shot, he trained her himself. But he be damned if he was going to just roll over and accept losing to her. There was just no way. He fought hard to keep that Town going, and he was going to continue to fight to do so; even if it meant barreling through an old friend.
Still, the detective could not help but mentally scoff a little at what Sveta said. Maxine? Strong? She was a sleazy news reporter before the bombs fell and afterward, all she kept was the sleaze. She was and is a manipulator, nothing more than that.
He shook his head at her comment, letting the chill of the air between them rush by and kick up dust and loose debris from the demolished street.
“She’s not strong, Sveta,” he said. “All she does is manipulate and hide behind people who are strong; people like you. And until you and rest of those women realize that, you’re nothing more than her puppets.” His own hand, still resting at the gun on his hip, twitched as he nodded to the Russian’s own guns. “Don’t do it, Sveta. You’re fast, but deep down, you know I’m faster,” he said with conviction. “That town needs me, and I’m going back to them one way or another. Even if I have to go through you.”
>>“She’s not strong, Sveta. All she does is manipulate and hide behind people who are strong; people like you. And until you and rest of those women realize that, you’re nothing more than her puppets.”
He really didn't know. Maybe he was right about it, somehow; but philosophy made no difference, Maxine was as strong as her followers, and her followers were pretty damn strong. Three times over, if Sveta was around. Maxine was not going to give that up.

She knew that too. They stared at each other for a moment of eternity. The moment was going to break, eventually, one way or another.
"You know deep down that you can't shoot me." Sveta said finally, not mocking or begging, simply stating. "You are still who you were, or you would not care for the Town. And you know I can't go with you. Maxine needs me, and she would come to get me, and you would have to kill me anyway." she shook her head, slowly "We either do dis right here, right now; or we both walk away, you go back to the Town, I go back home, and we both live. You can't save me, Jorge."

Jorge could only shake his head as he started down the young woman, not once taking his eyes off her or the hands and strayed near the guns at her hips. The former detective really didn’t want it to get down to this but upon hearing these words from the woman’s lips, it obviously meant that she meant business. She was never going to let this go, she was indebted to Maxine and she was not going to escape from her. Not because Maxine didn’t want her to go, no, but because Sveta didn’t want to go.
A sadness fell over his features as he listened to this woman, this strong individual, act like she had absolutely no other option. Of every amazon, it wasn’t the former serial killers or explosive personalities that were the most dangerous, it was this little woman right here. She was the most dangerous of all of them, he knew that. It was sad that she didn’t put more faith into that belief; it was especially a shame because he knew he couldn’t just let Sveta walk back to Maxine.
They couldn’t have that kind of power. It wasn’t right. Even in a decaying, apocalyptic world, there had to be a sense of right and wrong. Otherwise they all get sent down into the darkness…
>> "We either do dis right here, right now; or we both walk away, you go back to the Town, I go back home, and we both live. You can't save me, Jorge."
For the first time…the detective smirked. It was an expression that would remind one of the old days, a time when a witty comment could be thrown around without fear.
“If I really haven’t changed, Sveta,” he said, hands still drifting near his holstered gun. “Then you know that I don’t believe that. Everyone can be saved; but they need to want it. If you choose not to be saved, well, that’s your decision.” he cracked his neck to the side, visibly loosening but not once moving out of his stance. “And you know I can’t let you go back to them, Sveta. You’re far too powerful for someone like Maxine to continue to control. I’m not going to risk another instance of you powering up her army to attack the innocent people of my town. I’m sorry, Sveta,” he muttered, obviously disliking his options but knowing that he had no choice. “I will do what I have to…”

He really had not changed one bit. Sveta admired that. After so much suffering, after the world falling apart, after all the loved ones dying, there were still some people alive who believed in the power of good and justice. What was there not to admire? She felt sorry, not for him, he woudl be fine; she felt sorry for the whole situation. She liked Jorge. Once upon a time they were friends. It hurt to see that fall apart too.

Sveta looked at him for another long moment... then dropped her hands. She stood in front of him, not making a move, not preparing to draw on him anymore.
"Den you have to kill me." she stated, calmly "If you take me prisoner, dey will come for me. You know dat. Taking me you will put the Town in danger. You may win, but there will be casualties. Maxine will not give me up, and they will kill to get me. You can kill me den, you can kill me now. But you know you can't take me prisoner."
It wasn't her decision. Even if part of her wanted, really wanted to go with him, she did not need the guilt of putting the people in danger that were willing to rescue her.

Jorge had said it. He was perfectly willing to end Sveta’s life right now if it meant that it would be the end of Maxine’s strength. But did he really have the conviction to carry on with his statements? Jorge liked to think he did. He liked to think that he would do whatever it took to protect that town, and killing Sveta here would indeed help with that. She wouldn’t leave Maxine, she was too brainwashed to do so. Therefore the only real option was to gun her down and take her out of the equation, right?
His hand drifted to the handle of his gun, brushing it as he made ready to move if Sveta dared to raise her gun against him. Why couldn’t she just listen to reason? Why couldn’t she really see how bad Maxine was? It just didn’t make sense to him. Maybe…maybe he hadn’t changed as much as he professed?
Quickly he got his head back into the game the second that he saw Sveta move…and spread her arms…
>> "Den you have to kill me…If you take me prisoner, dey will come for me. You know dat. Taking me you will put the Town in danger. You may win, but there will be casualties. Maxine will not give me up, and they will kill to get me. You can kill me den, you can kill me now. But you know you can't take me prisoner."
He was stunned down. Probably more than he should have been. Sveta was offering herself up, like a lamb to slaughter. So strong was her conviction that she couldn’t leave Maxine that she was willing to die for it. Or was she bluffing? Did she really think that Jorge couldn’t do it? Maybe she did and she actually did only see this as a way out?
Grrr… the question were too much and too numerous in his head. He was frustrated beyond belief. The whole time he was preaching that you cannot let the apocalypse change who you are, and yet here he was, ready to prove that he was changed too.
It seemed that whenever he tried to make the right decision, everything just fell apart around him. Risking Sveta’s life, risking the town, everything was just too heavy on the shoulders of a man who only wanted to hold onto his humanity!
Snap…[/b]
Suddenly Jorge shouted as he drew his gun, quicker than Sveta would have been able to notice. Gun raise, he opened fire as he shouted out in anguish and frustration.
“ARRGH!!”
BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!!
The hammer fell, the trigger was squeezed, and time after time he fired the gun. Anyone would have been riddled with holes if they were caught within the path of those rounds. But…Sveta would not be harmed. Each and every bullet struck the concrete in front of the Russian’s feet, sent a spray of rock and debris up onto her feet.
Jorge breathed heavily, still squeezing the trigger, even though he was out of rounds. Silently he slipped the gun back into its holster as he lifted his head to look at Sveta once again. Slowly he brought up his first and raised his index finger.
“You used up your one chance to come up against me and live, Sveta,” he said in frustration. “I tried to reason with you…but you don’t care.” He shook his head as he turned and began to walk away from her. “If I see you ride with the amazons just ONE more time, against my Town, I won’t hesitate to put a bullet between your eyes. I promise you that.”
With a growl, he turned. He wouldn’t let the apocalypse change him. Not yet. He was going to fight it tooth and nail until the end of his days…
She didn't even reach for her gun. She was so sure the first shot would kill her, just like he said, he was dead serious about it, that she just closed her eyes, this was it. Maybe for the better, for everyone.
Six shots.
Sveta opened her eyes. She was alive. It just wasn't fair.
>>“You used up your one chance to come up against me and live, Sveta. I tried to reason with you…but you don’t care. If I see you ride with the amazons just ONE more time, against my Town, I won’t hesitate to put a bullet between your eyes. I promise you that.”
That was it. Jorge let her live, and walked away. Knowing full well that she was going to go back to the Amazons, and if the fight that was still happening somewhere a few blocks down did not wipe them all out, they would be coming back for more.
Now it was only a matter of time, and nothing else.
