The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

April arrived at the Mansion in the early-afternoon with her family. According to her parents, this was a place she could go and be herself. A place where she would not be judged.
She stepped out of the car, with her hood up to conceal her face and with two bags. Her mother asked her if she wanted her to go with her, but April declined. She felt that since she was eighteen now, she should be responsible for herself. However, her parents still insisted upon waiting outside, to make sure she was all right.
She passed through the gate, in awe of the size of the place. She turned back to look at her parents. They looked back, as if they were urging her to continue into the school. April turned again to face the school, and she continued down the path to the front door. Slowly, she opened the front door.
“Hi babies! How’re you today?” Agnes gently spoke as she stopped in front of a large, potted plant inside of the mansion’s foyer.
Carrying her watering pail, she hummed gently to herself as she raised the spout to the packed soil inside the pot and poured some of the water within. Not too much though, obviously, since the last thing she wanted was to drown the poor things roots. Instead she poured a careful amount so as to sate the plant’s thirst before she sighed and took a step back.
The mansion gardener stood there and carefully inspected the large fern. It was tall, leafy, green, full of life and health, and best of all there were no signs of insects attacking it. If there had been Agnes was sure that her powers would have drawn them to her. But, standing there for a minute or two, she saw none. So she moved on to the next fern.
Agnes Nicholas sighed though. She was not in her most…comfortable form. Because of her mutation she shifted in between three different bug attributes. The one that she was most used to and the less intrusive was her wings. But unfortunately she had just molted. Now, instead of sporting wings, the young runaway had a thick, green carapace that covered her body in protective plates. The iridescent shell glimmered when under the right light so it looked as if rainbows danced across her skin as she made her way over to the next fern.
The one thing she didn’t like about the carapace, even though it was pretty resilient, was that it slowed her down. But, Agnes had a job to do! So, she trudged on to the next fern, which looked just as healthy, and began to pour some water into that as well.
It was while she was working that she heard the front doors open. Normally Agnes would have ignored it. After all, staff and students come and go all the time. But as she looked up, she noted that this was not someone that she knew. Most of the students here didn’t cover themselves up unless it was imperative that they did so.
She tilted her head, brushing some of her long, dark hair, out of her eyes as she watched the new figure. She looked a little meek, like she was scared. Agnes knew that feeling all too well.
Still holding her watering pail, she smiled as she carefully made her way over to the newcomer.
“H-Hello? Can I help you?” she asked in her gentle voice.
April was about halfway through the doorway when she heard someone else approach and say, >>H-Hello, can I help you?
She looked in the direction of the voice to see a thin, brunette woman of about the same age trudging toward her. She habitually tugged on the drawstrings on her hood. April was still a little nervous of the new place, but the woman seemed nice enough.
"Errr... yeah. I just got here. Who do I need to talk to?" she stuttered.
Agnes paused as she came up to the young woman who was so carefully covered up. The runaway frowned slightly at this. She wondered what the other girl had to hide. Or was she just that embarrassed by her mutation? If there was one thing the runaway understood, it was indeed that. When living on the streets she hid her mutation at all costs: staying away from people, hiding in the dark, anything so that no one would notice the skittering bugs that were sure to follow in her wake.
Thankfully Agnes had a bit more control of her abilities now so fewer insects were about. But that did not mean it didn’t happen from time to time. She hoped that whoever this girl was could find similar results.
Standing none too far away from her, dressed in her favorite denim jacket, jeans, and a dark purple top, the runaway stood in a very casual and non-threatening way. She didn’t want to scare the girl, after all.
>> "Errr... yeah. I just got here. Who do I need to talk to?"
Agnes smiled sympathetically. She definitely knew the feeling.
“Well, I can show you to the mansion offices. I’m sure that one of the staff there can sign you in.” She beamed as she extended her hand to her. “My name is Agnes. Welcome to Xavier’s. Are you hungry? Do you need anything? Or do you just want me to shut up and show you to the office?” she said with a grin. Gawd, she turning more into Gina every day…
April peered at the woman from under her hood. She smiled in return, although the woman probably would not be able to see that. The hood was also blocking her vision, so for a second, she considered removing it. But, she then decided that she would only put it down if someone asked about it. Soon, the woman talked all at once and reached out for a handshake.
>>“Well, I can show you to the mansion offices. I’m sure that one of the staff there can sign you in. My name is Agnes. Welcome to Xavier’s. Are you hungry? Do you need anything? Or do you just want me to shut up and show you to the office?”
April took a moment to process what the woman just said. She then offered her gloved hand in return, hoping to make a good impression.
"Thanks. I'm fine for now. The name's April," she said, with a little more confidence than earlier.
Agnes had hoped that she had not come off as too strong to the young girl. She definitely did not mean or want to scare her off. But judging alone from the posture and the nervous appearance, Agnes had a feeling that she knew all too well what the young girl was going through. She hated meeting new people, and most of all she hated exposing her powers to them, at least before she came to the mansion she had those problems. Now though, she was much more open about herself and more willing to lend a sympathetic ear to those who needed it.
>> "Thanks. I'm fine for now. The name's April,"
Agnes beamed and nodded in understanding. Her carapace reflected the various hues as she shifted her feet beneath the light that poured in from the windows. She sincerely did hope for the best for the girl.
“It’s lovely to meet you, April,” she smiled. “One sec, okay?” she moved over to the last plant that she had just watered and set down her watering pail next to the pot. Once she had done so, she moved back over to April. “Come on, I can show you to the greeter’s office. They’re the ones you sign up with. They’ll get everything squared away for you.” She said as she began to take the lead.
Out of the corner of her eye she kept noticing that the girl was clinging onto her hood for dear life. Was she just that embarrassed or did she just not feel safe? Agnes didn’t want to force the girl to do anything but there was no saying that she couldn’t try to make her comfortable.
“You know, you don’t have to hide here,” she said warmly as she nodded to her hood. “Unless, you know, that would make you feel uncomfortable. But, we’re all mutants. We all understand one another.”
April watched Agnes set down the watering can. She thought she spotted a slight metallic tone to her skin, though she was not sure. Must be the gardener, she concluded.
>>"Come on, I can show you to the greeter’s office. They’re the ones you sign up with. They’ll get everything squared away for you.”
April started to follow Agnes to the greeter's office. I hope they can help, she wondered.
>>“You know, you don’t have to hide here. Unless, you know, that would make you feel uncomfortable. But, we’re all mutants. We all understand one another.”
April's thoughts moved back to the hood she was wearing. It was dumb of her to think that she would be able to hide the fact she did not look normal. Plus, it was making it hard to see, not to mention it was also hot under there. She paused in the hallway. She thought thats since she was most likely going to have to show her face here sometime, she might as well get it over with. Hesistantly, she moved her hands to her hood.
"So," she said, "there are others here who don't look... uh ...normal?" She said this as she removed her hood, exposing her green skin tone and leafy hair.
Agnes had truly hoped that she did not offend the girl or scare her off by suggesting that she could go without the hood. Not every mutant was comfortable with the idea of exposing themselves on the first day. They needed to get used to the environment, to the people, to learn for themselves that it was okay to just be…themselves! But Agnes saw no problem is just passing on a bit of free and friendly advice. If April chose to take it, fine. If not, well, she hoped that one day she would.
As she led on though, she noticed that April stopped. So she stopped in turn and settled her gaze on her. She watched as April slid her hands up to her hood, reluctantly, but she did not stop.
Agnes stepped back and simply watched, not wanting to say anything until she was done.
>> "So…there are others here who don't look... uh ...normal?"
Green skin and leafy hair. Ah, a plant mutant, maybe? Well, obviously, but Agnes had no idea of the full scale of her ability. Was she made of plants, or did she just look like one. Either way, the young runaway didn’t scream or recoil in terror, she only smiled in a most friendly and warm way.
“A lot,” she confirmed.
To prove her point Agnes reached into her denim jacket pocket and fished around until she pulled out her cellphone. Flipping it open, she pressed a few buttons until finally she found what she was looking for. Turning it around she offered her phone for April to take, the screen glowing towards her. On the screen was a picture of Agnes herself (but with fly wings this time) and with her was an enthusiastic looking young teenager of 15, though she looked like an honest to goodness gargoyle. Leathery wings, horns upon her brow, grayish skin and sharp teeth. But for all of her demonic appearance, the picture of the two girls hugging was cute enough to disarm anyone.
She beamed happily. “That’s my self-adopted little sister, Gina. She lives here too.” Agnes said with a nod. “Don’t worry, you’ll meet her. But, uh, be careful, she’s a hugger.”
April was worried when she took off her hood, but fortunately, Agnes did not give the "ohmygawdwhatareyou?!" response that she expected. She relaxed a bit.
>>"A lot."
So she would not be the only funny-looking person at the Institute. That was a relief to her. She then saw Agnes pull out a phone. Agnes fiddled with it for a second, then showed her a picture of her and another girl. She handed the phone to April. Upon closer inspection, April saw that the other girl in the photo had among other things a grayish skin tone, two horns on her head, and bat-like wings. She almost looked as if she had come from one of those old medieval castles, had it not been for her much friendlier and livelier demeanor.
>>“That’s my self-adopted little sister, Gina. She lives here too. Don’t worry, you’ll meet her. But, uh, be careful, she’s a hugger.”
April let out a small laugh. "Don't worry, I'll be careful," she joked.
April then took a second look at the photo. She was a bit puzzled as to why Agnes had insect-like wings in this picture, while here she did not. She thought about asking, but she decided not to pry. She held the cellphone out to return it to Agnes.
"So, is that the greeter's office up ahead?" she asked, pointing in their direction of travel.
Agnes grinned. She was glad that April was going to take her advice. Agnes knew Gina all too well and the second that she caught wind that there was a new arrival at the mansion, she would quickly make herself known. Gina was such a social butterfly, far more than Agnes herself was used to being, and because of such Gina just loved to meet the new people. It would not take long for Gina to make someone like April feel comfortable and pull her out of her shell.
Gratefully she took her phone back, smirked once more at the picture, then closed her phone, slipping it into her pocket. It was about time that they moved along anyways.
>> "So, is that the greeter's office up ahead?"
Agnes looked up and nodded.
“Yeah, we can see if anyone is home. Sometimes the greeters have other jobs to do around campus but there is usually at least one or two around,” she explained as she continued to lead the way. “Don’t worry, we’ll get you settled in though.”
Onward she led until she got to the staff offices. The majority of them were closed but it didn’t hurt to knock. Arriving at the first, she gentled rapped on the door and waited. Hopefully someone was in the get April checked in.
April followed Agnes down the hall. There was a set of doors up ahead.
>>Yeah, we can see if anyone is home. Sometimes the greeters have other jobs to do around campus but there is usually at least one or two around. Don’t worry, we’ll get you settled in though.”
They arrived at the office area. Agnes started to knock on the first of the office doors. The offices seemed a bit quiet to April. To top that, none of the doors were open. Maybe no one was in. Looks like I'll have to wait, she thought. At this point, she did not want to be a distraction to anyone by banging on doors. She reached into one of her bags and pulled out a copy of A Tale of Two Cities. She looked back over at Agnes.
"I don't think anyone's here," she said. She went to sit against the wall just outside the door. Surely, the greeters would not leave the area unattended for too long. "I'll just wait here. I brought something to read. I'll be fine," she assured Agnes, motioning at her book. "I'd better let you get back to your job. Thanks for your help." She opened the book, removed the bookmark, and started reading the words of Charles Dickens.
Agnes frowned as she stood outside the greeter’s office, waiting to see if anyone would answer. Unfortunately it was beginning to look more and more like no one was there. That was just plain wrong. Why the hell wouldn’t one of the greeter’s be there? Was it their job to be ready to accept new students at a moment’s notice? After all, she would hate to be neglected or forgotten after screwing up her courage to just appear at the mansion’s doorsteps because no staff was around to talk to her. That was just not cool.
>> "I don't think anyone's here,"
She sighed. “You may be right,” Agnes replied with a nod of her head. That was unfortunate.
Agnes then turned to April, possibly suggesting the idea of maybe heading to the kitchens to relax for a bit before heading back. But before Agnes could get a word or two out, April had begun to settle herself in against the wall, pulling a rather large book from her bag.
>> "I'll just wait here. I brought something to read. I'll be fine, I'd better let you get back to your job. Thanks for your help."
The runaway watched her a moment before she nodded her head. She really didn’t want to push her company on the young mutant any more than she had. So, with a small and understanding smile on her face, she nodded her head.
“O-Okay,” she muttered. “Yeah, I better get back to work. Don’t worry, I’m sure one of the greeters will show up.” Hands in her pockets, Agnes turned to leave but she stopped for a moment as she turned back to April. “Hey, don’t be a stranger, okay? I live in the girl’s dormitories too. Don’t be afraid to say hi.”
She grinned as she then continued on down the hall and back to the work at hand…
