The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

”Shin, this anime is very violent.”
”Mhm”
A few minutes later.
”Oh goodness, she just said the eff word again.”
”Mhm.”
Another few minutes, ”Oh my…did she really just call him a…”
”Yup.”
Finally, ”I don’t think what she just said is physically possible…”
It was nearing 3 am and Shin and Kealey had just started watching a new anime. It worked well that they were on Thanksgiving break, because Shin was having a sleepless night and Kealey had joined him by proxy. It’s kind of how it worked when you got to share your boyfriend’s emotions. Kealey didn’t mind though, Shin always had ideas of things to pass the time. This one was particularly interesting, and despite her protestations the blond was absolutely fascinated by what was happening on the screen. She hadn’t known that cartoons talked that way. The animes they usually watched were cute and funny, with sometimes intense moments…but this…this was a whole new level.
The concept was easy enough…business man gets intercepted by pirates…ends up joining the pirates. The pirates were the crazy part though…at least at first…and one of them was a girl. A real hard-nosed, go-getter type of girl. She drank real liquor, not beer, and she cursed like the sailor she was. Secretly, Kealey was impressed. She tried to imagine herself in such a role and failed, snuggling closer against Shin with a slight giggle. He was so patient with her rambling…and everything. She smiled.
Then, she spontaneously burst into tears. Horrible tears. Not happy tears, either, real…horrible…awful…tears. The emotions had come out of left field and shattered the happy, awe filled, comfortable moment she’d been enjoying. She couldn’t stop it though…not now that it had started in earnest. It was Kealey’s least favorite situation…knowing her emotions were there, trapped in their own little bubble while someone else’s ran completely rampant with her.
”I…don’t….know…what’s wrong….” she gasped between hiccups and small sobs. ”But someone is…is…really upset….”
Running hands through blond curls, the empathy tried to take a deep breath and calm herself, but failed, there was simply too much misery…and now there was more on top of it…from another source. ”It’s…re-really bad….and I can’t make it stop…”

It was sudden. Kealey's mood changed, from happy to sad. By now, he was used to Kealey's rapid mood changes. Still, it didn't prepare him for the speed of the change.
Tears welled. Emotions fell. Sadness remained.
He'd been loving the snuggling. The crying? Not so much. The tears rolling down Kealey's cheeks didn't please Shin. He always preferred a happy Kealey. A cheery Kealey was a sunny Kealey. Shin preferred the light emotions over heavier ones. Whatever had caused the rapidity of the change in the situation, he wasn't pleased about.
Shin paused the show and turned to her, with as much understanding and concern as was physically possible to be shown on his face. Their closeness broke as he rose, grabbing her hand. "I'm sorry," He stated calmly, purpose in his voice. "I'll do something about it." Shin was often an action man. Whatever preparation couldn't prepare one for had to be dealt with on the fly.
He hauled her up, and led her out the door of the room, down the halls of the mansion, to his office. He pulled out a chair for her and seated her by his desk. Then, he opened up the mansion-wide intercom system. It was time to abuse his powers.
"This message goes out to all student's in the mansion. Someone is sad. Someone is crying, or worried. Please stop. Come to Tetsuya Shinbo's office right away if you need to talk. That is all."
The message ended. Communications were cut. Shin glanced to Kealey, and hoped they'd be able to solve the sadness situation. "We'll talk to them." Whoever they were, they'd get a pair to unload on. They'd get help. Kealey would get relief.
Shin was always serious where Kealey's strong emotions were concerned.

Andrew had sat down since Kate had left the kitchen. Honestly he was a little confused as to how it had gotten so...well confusing. First that thing with Verdy and now this? The candles on Kate's birthday cake were still alight and slowly covering the frosting in small puddles of wax. He ignored them in favor of sitting and thinking. Before he could sit and think too long the intercom crackled to life with a familiar voice.
Why would Shin be concerned about someone being sad? How would he even know? Unless Kealey had picked up on said sadness and for some reason couldn't move past it. But then who would be sad enough at this time of night to affect Kealey? He couldn't think of a soul until his gaze caught the cake. Kate...
She'd had a horrible day and it was obvious she'd been crying when she came down to the kitchen. What had happened after that couldn't have made it any better. So he'd obviously just gone and made things worse. He must have made her just miserable. Heck she was probably crying and it was his fault. Not to mention her unhappiness had gone and affected Kealey so now that was another sad women on his conscience. As far as making problems for people he seemed to be excelling.
Andrew got up and headed to the doorway. Might as well face the music. Or in this case the sad and likely disappointed-in-him empath. He blew the candles out on his way out.
Happy Birthday Kate. I hope things get better.
Out of the kitchen and up to the offices Andrew went. Upon reaching Shin's office Andrew knocked lightly on the door and let himself in.

Kealey was touched by the lengths Shin was willing to go to for her. He led, and she followed through the mansion, still unable to quell the wracking sobs. It was frustrating, because Kealey could still feel her own emotions, hidden in their own little bubble. Most of the time, these days, she was able to compartmentalize and keep other peoples’ feelings at bay. Not tonight.
It was a strange feeling, to be held hostage by emotion. The tears came, her nose ran, and she could feel her eyes getting poofier by the moment…but she really wasn’t upset, she was getting frustrated..but was otherwise fine. As Shin’s voice echoed over the speakers in the Mansion, Kealey even felt compelled to laugh, an action that resulted in a half hiccupped sound somewhere between laughter and a sob. This had to stop.
Sinking into one of the chairs by Shin’s desk, Kealey continued to sniffle and cry, glad for once that Shin had seen her in much worse condition. As prettily as she did a lot of things, Kealey knew she was an ugly crier.
The door to the office opened and Kealey’s head jerked towards it in surprise. Someone had replied?
Yup. It was Andrew…and he was sad…but not nearly as distraught as the person behind the crying. He was also guilty…so very guilty.
”Hello Andrew….” Kealey sniffled, wiping her eyes and trying to restore some semblance of normalcy to the situation. ”Long time no see.”

It was a wonder only Andrew showed up. A moment after he'd ended the intercom transmission and spoken to Kealey, he'd realized this was a mansion full of awkward growing-up teenagers with mutant powers. Most of them might have been sad, anyone could have been depressed, and everyone needed something to cheer them up, even on the best day.
Thankfully, it had only been Andrew that had shown up. He wasn't punished for his silly slip of the brain. Could brains slip? That seemed a strange mental image. Anyways.
Shin walked over to Andrew and poked him in the chest. "Cheer. Up." He ordered. He looked Andrew sympathetically in the eye. "Why are you sad?"

Oh boy Kealey looked a fright. That only made him feel even worse. Apparently despite being pretty awesome in other ways she didn't cry pretty. He almost winced at her attempt to look as normal as possible when she greeted him. Really did he need to feel any worse about him? He'd killed someone, accidentally hit on one of his gal friends, mislead another, and now because of Kate's sadness Kealey was crying. He managed a very unconvincing smile at her.
"H-hey Kealey."
Then of course Shin waltzed over and ordered him to cheer up complete with a poke in the chest. Andrew nearly laughed. Looking down at the shorter man as he looked at him sympathetically and asked why he was sad deflated the laughter post haste and Andrew remember why he was here in the first place. Safely back on board the guilt train Andrew sorted his thoughts some and answered.
"Uh, it's not exactly me that's causing Kealey's crying over there but I do know who is."
Andrew was all kinds of guilty for various reasons that he'd been over in his head many times already. He'd have to start looking for a lawyer sooner or later. Tangents aside, Kate was the one who was sad enough to cause Kealey's problem. After all having your birthday forgotten was bad enough. Add in a guy freaking out because you kissed him? Yeah Kate was probably the cause. With another twinge of guilt he glanced between Shin and Kealey waiting for one of them to ask the inevitable question of who was responsible if not him.

Shin commanded Andrew to feel better, because he really was very down in the dumps, and Kealey giggled a bit through the tears. Andrew wasn’t the one causing them, and she wondered briefly why he was there. Maybe he was simply curious, or wanted to find some way to be helpful because he knew what her powers did and what the situation must be. No…he wasn’t feeling any of those things, Kealey noticed as she sniffled and continued wiping tears from her cheeks. He was feeling sad…and oh so very guilty. Kealey’s giggles vanished, and her expression matched the tears that were finally starting to abate, albeit slowly.
It might have been comical in another situation, but there was something definitely wrong. Andrew admitted that he knew who was causing the crying…and the guilt spiked in a way that could only mean that he felt like he was responsible. As a result, Kealey felt guilty herself and a fresh wave of tears built their way up in her eyes.
”It’s really okay Andrew, I didn’t mean to make you feel bad….this sort of thing happens sometimes…there’s no need to feel so guilty about the whole thing. I’m so silly sometimes…Shin was just trying to help.” she hiccupped slightly and took a deep, shuddering breath, ”I’m sure I’ll be okay soon…What’s wrong though? Can we help?”

>>"Uh, it's not exactly me that's causing Kealey's crying over there but I do know who is."
Andrew told them it wasn't his fault, and Kealey told him she wasn't trying to make him feel like it was. Shin crossed his arms, though, curiously. If it wasn't Andrew who was depressed or crying, and if he knew who had... had he caused the crying? It was a bit of a leap, but then, Shin always did like to leap when it came to logic. He tilted his head, and broke in after Kealey had finished talking. "Who is crying then, Andrew? Huh?"
Oh. That had come off a bit more aggressive than he'd wanted, Shin realized a second later. But words had been said. They couldn't be unsaid. He regretted being as bossy as he was being to Andrew, but not much. The concern over Kealey's state of tears far outweighed any remorse he had for being Mr. Bossy-pants. Andrew knew who was crying, and he could tell them. They could cheer that person up, and in turn, cheer Kealey up. That was the important thing here, cheering Kealey up, so!
He waited for Andrew's answer, patiently as a sick patient waiting for their cure.

Kealey asked what was wrong and if they could help after what seemed like an age to him. Andrew could only hope that the two of them could cheer Kate up where he had failed so miserably. Though, come to think of it, seeing Kealey this distressed because of her might not help Kate stop being sad. They'd cross that bridge when they came to it. As for himself...well Andrew would stay out in the hallway and let Shin and Kealey work their magic. It would just be entirely too awkward if he was with them. Not to mention Kealey would pick up on that probably demand to be told why he was so awkward at some point or another. In fact she might already be wondering about that. Ok stop it! Andrew forcibly stopped himself before he got too carried away.
Ouch, yes sir Shin sir! The other man had come off a little harsh in asking him who was causing it. Not that Andrew would blame him in the least. If it had been Andrew's boyfriend or girlfriend in that situation he'd probably be a bit over zealous in trying to fix it too. He took a second to summon up what courage he had to beat back his guilt before answering.
"Have either of you met one of the newer residents, a girl name Kate? Fire related mutation, British, brunette, just turned 18."
Andrew paused for confirmation or denial before proceeding.
"She's the one crying. Up until she came here she spent most of her life isolated in her home with her mother and their servants. Yesterday was her birthday and her mother forgot it. It's had her out of sorts all day from what she told me. I tried to cheer her up a little. Baked her a birthday cake. It, uh, backfired."
Andrew conveniently left out the part where she kissed him. Shin and Kealey didn't need to know that.

Kealey felt even worse for Andrew when Shin started taking a hard line with him. ”It’s…it’s okay Andrew… he’s just worried because I hardly ever get this upset.” Kealey was grateful…the tears were really slowing down now…but her breath still hiccupped slightly with about every other breath. It was hard to talk like that, but she really felt the need to get her message across…still, she spared a small smile of appreciation for Shin. He really was going out of his way to help…Shin always did things like that though…that was part of what made him so amazing…besides…he was cute when he was being all aggressive and protective. Kealey sniffled, using the sleeve of her shirt to wipe her eyes and still trying to pull it together. The deep sadness was still there, but the overwhelming need to weep had passed.
Andrew apparently had some explaining to do…and explain he did, asking if Kealey had met a new resident at the Mansion, a young girl…named Kate. Kealey thought, eyes squinting as she searched her memory and came up with nothing. She either hadn’t met the girl, or the meeting had been so fleeting she’d forgotten.
The story that followed almost made Kealey start crying again. Andrew had been trying to make the girl feel better by baking her a birthday cake, and he’d ended up making things worse. That made no sense. How could helping someone celebrate their birthday make them feel this[ bad? She’d been reluctant about her birthday and Shin had helped her celebrate anyway…it had been awesome. Suddenly, Kealey wanted to know more about this girl, and what she’d done so well to get a birthday cake from Andrew.
”Now Andrew…I could understand someone weeping with joy after eating this cake you made…but not like this…” Kealey said, pointing to her red nose and puffy eyes, ”What can we do to help?”

He hadn't met her. Shin shook his head, 'no'.
She was the one crying her heart out. Someone had forgotten her birthday. Andrew had tried cheering her up about it. Something had gone wrong.
What had gone wrong, Shin wondered, that would cause such a severe reaction? He crossed his arms over his chest, and gave Andrew a stern look. Kealey asked what they could do to help, and Shin? He played hardball. "Why'd the cake plan backfire? I've tasted your baking. It's usually a sure hit." He didn't back down, arms crossed, lips pulled tight, taciturn look on his face. Andrew wouldn't be skipping out on this one. The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth would be what Shin and Kealey got.

Both of them seemed entirely puzzled that such a simple chain of events could have led to such a horrible reaction. Kealey thankfully seemed willing to move past the 'why?' and onto the 'how can we help?' portion of the problem. Shin on the other hand didn't. He asked why with his arms crossed and stern look and everything. Andrew felt like the kid that had been caught peeking in mommy's closet for Christmas presents. He shuffled his feet and looked away from Shin. That was a very nice wall he had. Very straight and sturdy. Eventually he looked sheepishly at Kealey, still avoiding the questioning gaze of the Asian man in the room.
"Maybe you could go talk to her? Cheer her up a little? I bet you two are good at that. Just, uh, don't mention me."
No way was he going to answer Shin's question if he could avoid it. Because the answer came in two parts. One was awkward as heck and the other wasn't something he intended to share with his friends period. Andrew didn't know Shin well enough to consider him a friend but Kealey definitely was. Andrew didn't want to damage her estimation of him with knowledge that he'd killed someone recently. Andrew was definitely feeling evasive as he stood there awkwardly. The less they knew the better.
With luck they'd get Kate happy again and then Kealey would be happy again and all would be well. Except for the fact that he'd caused the whole thing and felt rather like a monumental failure for it. If he put it into perspective it didn't matter that much. No one was actually hurt. Well except for the dead guy. Dead was pretty hurt. He didn't matter though. The dead couldn't feel after all. Kate could feel though and he'd done a great job of proving that. Andrew shuffled a bit more and had yet to look at Shin since he'd asked why.

Shin was right…Andrew’s baking usually was top par, and it was hard to believe that anyone was that upset because something had gone wrong in that area. It just didn’t make sense. Something wasn’t adding up. Kealey took another deep, shuddery breath and let it out. The emotions were still there, but she was getting a handle on them now…they weren’t so negatively effecting her as they had been. Andrew was avoiding telling them something and Kealey looked at him closely, not hard, but searchingly. She wanted to know what had happened. Andrew was one of the nicest people she’d met…he’d helped her pick out games for Shin…and he’d helped Shin make her German Chocolate cake. If something was wrong with Andrew…Kealey definitely owed it to him to help in any way possible.
”I’m not sure I’m in any shape to be trying to cheer someone up. More likely I’d just end up dripping all over her floor.” Kealey said, wiping her eyes a final time and wondering just how much of a mess she looked.
Kealey looked to Shin, wondering if it would help if she could get Andrew alone and talk. ”Do you want to go and make sure she’s okay? I’m okay now…really. I’d hate to get close and have to go through all of this again.”

Andrew actually averted his eyes. Something was up. Beyond the cake and hurt feelings, something was up, and there was something Andrew was not telling them. This is what Shin figured. Andrew was in trouble, and some young girl's heart was on the line. She was sad. He'd caused it. Or knew how it had happened. He was at fault here. Whatever he'd done... they'd help fix.
Now, onto the how. This was where things got tricky.
Shin looked to Kealey curiously about her suggestion.
"I think Andrew should talk to her," He said tightly. The sentence was simple as they come. The act it implied? More difficult than rocket science, with twice the explosive potential.
He didn't want to take the focus off Andrew and what he'd done.

For a moment Andrew almost thought he was off the hook. Kealey's suggestion being that Shin should go and try to cheer Kate up. That was something Andrew could get behind. He wouldn't have to see her directly after the events of the kitchen. It sounded like such a good solution to Andrew that he completely missed the subtext of him staying here with Kealey and looked at Shin to see if he'd go for it.
He got shut down with a handful of words.
There would be no evading Kate without telling them at least some of what had happened and then they'd probably insist he go talk to her. Andrew didn't want to go talk to Kate like a reasonable person would. He wanted to be a shameless coward and avoid the problem altogether. What was wrong with that? Besides everything of course? There really was no recourse. Andrew was going to have to say something. Between Shin being all strict and Kealey being sniffly he couldn't see much of a way out.
"I sorta said something that made things a lot sadder than they were. Things were talked about and then cake was finished and I iced it in her favorite colors and she..."
"Shekissedmeok!"
Andrew blushed violently about having to talk about such things to two people that he didn't know that well.
"I just don't want to deal with the awkwardness that will ensue. It'll be a lot easier to cheer her up if one of you goes."
