The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Lydia Renard stood in front of the mansion’s impressive wrought iron gates, and stared at the school. The first time she had been there she had been too preoccupied with Rhythm, Andrew, and their respective injuries to notice how huge the building was, to appreciate the architecture. It was almost scary, the sheer size of it, and it made her feel incredibly small (and broke). The teenager took one more minute to take in the whole picture and then pushed the button next to the gates. A buzzing sound could be heard, along with a brief crackling, before a man’s voice came through the intercom, “Hello. How may I help you?”
“Ah well, I’m here to see DocProf. I was here the other day for…well, we were getting help. I just wanted to thank him.” In her hands she held a small box of freshly baked cookies and a small Thank You note. She honestly had no idea what to do to properly show her gratitude, and she hardly knew what the kindly old man liked. Dia had never put this much effort into thanking someone either. “I remember you, sweetheart. You were with Andrew and that other girl,” another buzzing sound came from the intercom as the gates unlocked with a clicking noise, “Come on in.”
She took another breath as she pushed the gate door open and started up the walkway to the door. She twisted the doorknob and poked her head in, unsure if she could just walk in or not. Last time she hadn’t exactly paid attention to respectful protocol. The skin-shifter had really just rushed in and followed Andrew to the infirmary and ignored everything and everyone else.
Lydia stepped into the mansion and closed the door behind her. She walked through the foyer and into the living room, the other room she was familiar with. There was a large television and numerous couches, but no kids occupying said furniture. Ah…everyone’s probably in class, she realized. Indeed there were no sounds of shouting and laughing children, and the area she was in seemed deserted. Ick, school. She was glad she wasn’t in school anymore. Lyd walked through the room and into a hallway. She looked around, trying to remember where the infirmary was.
“Crap,” The girl complained as she looked around, trying to discern if anything looked familiar to her. She continued down the hallway, hoping it would jog her belligerent memory. She continued this was for the next fifteen minutes, just wandering down hallway after hallway until she was so confused she didn’t even know where the living room was anymore. Great, now I’m trapped into this stupid mansion maze.
Girls bearing cookies usually meant trouble. The last one who said she was a girl scout made an army of spiders run over the Mansion. And oddly enough, it was always Mirror who had to deal with troublemakers like that. Life could be funny that way.
Not that s/he minded. This one, she looked decidedly hot. Reeeally nice. All right, so Mirror had a girlfriend, but that didn't mean s/he didn't have eyes...
"Hey there" Gawain grinned, stepping out of the mirror he had been occupying for the past few minutes "Lookin' for someone? I don't think I've seen you around here before."
Trying to sound like a responsible X-man and not a teenage guy.
Agnes was exhausted. Ever since the museum incident, the poor girl has been dodging questions, praises, fearful looks for a while. It was of little surprise too that she was simply tired of it all. That was why, right now she was immersing herself in ready her book for class. Walking down the hallway, the engrossed runaway had her book open for Earth Sciences class, reading about the ebb and flow of tides. She advances pretty well in her classes, even though she was a late starter. But she did not mind the pressure. It took her mind off the Bug-apooloza and the man she had severely injured.
Heading down one of the random hallways, always finding it easier to study when she did not know where she was going, Agnes found herself really no paying attention to what was ahead of her. Normally, when she was invisible to the people of this school, it did not matter. All it meant was that people barely noticed her and were able to walk by without a word. These days though, she needed to be careful where she was going. She had to purposefully avoid people or get pulled into conversations or play by plays about what happened at the Natural History Museum.
But her book and her studies were too interesting for her to pay attention this time. As she wandered, Agnes suddenly found herself hearing voices from the hall up ahead. Though by the time she recognized they were voices…it was far too late…
>> “Crap…”[/i]
>> "Hey there…Lookin' for someone? I don't think I've seen you around here before."
The first voice she had no idea who it was but the second she recognized instantly. Her jaw clenched as she heard him. Even though she had not seen him yet, she could imagine that wolfish grin, those trickster eyes…and the vision only made her want to reach out and punch him square in the eye again. Not that she really had cause to, he hadn’t done anything really wrong, except suggest for her to go out and study bugs, which of course was what led her to the museum. Okay so maybe she was reaching for a reason to blame him. Just that grin and smirk made him deserve every hit he got. At least in her opinion.
Stepping a bit closer, too late to drop the book and run the other way, Agnes slowly lowered her book and spied the fellow people in the hall. A young woman and of course, Gawain, with his usually devil-may-care self as he seemed to drool over the girl. Didn’t Maya mention to her that they s/he had a girlfriend already? God she wanted to slug him…
Book lowered, she smiled a bit weakly to the new female with cookies. “Hi.” She then turned and eyed Gawain dangerous. Just to show him that she was keeping an eye on him.
>> “Hey there. Lookin' for someone? I don't think I've seen you around here before.”
A voice came out of nowhere and almost made Lydia flinch, and a particularly scrumptious looking boy popped out of the mirror next to her, presumably the owner of the voice. She quickly recovered and hoped he didn’t notice her momentary lapse of cool. She was still jumpy from the traumatizing time she had the last time she had to come to the mansion, and the constant recurring nightmares weren’t helping one bit. The skin-shifter hoped the dark circles under her eyes weren’t so bad that day, as she gave her hair a toss and flashed a flirty grin at her new male companion.
“Hmm, I am. Would you believe it if I said it was you?” She asked, laying it on pretty thick, and giving a short laugh before continuing, “Actually, I’m looking for DocProf? I just wanted to give these to him to thank him.” She indicated the box of cookies she held, still warm in her hands. But the duo was interrupted by another voice, a female voice this time, before the boy could respond.
>> “Hi.”
A teenage girl reluctantly approached them, carrying a book and a half-hearted smile for Lyd. For the guy she had a not-so-nice look. In fact, it was a downright scary, “I’m watching you” look. It seemed the two new each other. Hopefully the situation wouldn’t take a turn for the awkward. “Oh hey. I was just telling this cutie how I’m trying to find the infirmary,” Lyd replied, tossing the boy another smile. “Do either of you mind helping me?
>>“Hmm, I am. Would you believe it if I said it was you?... Actually, I’m looking for DocProf? I just wanted to give these to him to thank him.”
Gawain grinned; not only was the girl hot, she also seemed like the trickster kind, and he could appreciate one when he saw her.
"I'd absolutely believe you" he nodded seriously "I never question what a lady says."
Cookies or Doc? The old guy sure was popular with the ladies. Especially the injured ones...
>> “Hi.”
... and then, Agnes showed up.
"H... heeeey, Agnes" Gawain turned to smile at her, although the glare he got from the bug girl was a bit disturbing. What have I done this time?!....
>>“Oh hey. I was just telling this cutie how I’m trying to find the infirmary. Do either of you mind helping me?
Annnd, on we go.
"Suure, no problem" he nodded, turning back to the guest and holding out his hand "Name's Gawain, official Mansion greeter, at your service. And this lady here is Agnes, one of the Mansion students. Nice to meet you, .....?"
>> “Oh hey. I was just telling this cutie how I’m trying to find the infirmary.”[/i]
>> "H... heeeey, Agnes"
“Hi, Gawain,” was all Agnes said in reply as she continued to glare at him. Didn’t he have a girlfriend? If so why was he flirting with this newcomer? Isn’t anything sacred to him? She then turned back to the new person and smiled more politely. “It’s very nice to meet you.”
>>“Do either of you mind helping me?”[/i]
>>"Suure, no problem…Name's Gawain, official Mansion greeter, at your service. And this lady here is Agnes, one of the Mansion students. Nice to meet you, .....?"
Agnes nodded as she held out her hand for the girl to shake. “It’s a pleasure.”
She also knew where the infirmary was so it would be alright for her to tag along too right? Even if just to keep an eye on the mischievously grinning Gawain. God why couldn’t he be Maya more? At least Maya she respected a bit more, even though they were exactly the same person, except the gender shifted. It seemed funny to her to think about them as two separate people. It was the same personality, same features, same bad jokes, yet to look at either of them, Agnes just felt a deeper affinity for Maya. Maybe it was because that damn grin of his just looked more innocent on a girl’s face than a boy’s.
Either way, she still wanted to punch s/he. Not just for her sake, but for his girlfriend’s. It was apparent that Agnes did not take infidelity well…not that she ever experienced it for herself.
She smiled at the new girl again and then glanced to Gawain, smiling oh so innocently. “Don’t mind another tag-a-long do ya?” she grinned. “I need to check on some results from DocProf anyways.”
Plus I can make sure you don’t do anything stupid with this new person.
Maybe it was because no one had ever hit on her, or maybe it was because she never really had a boyfriend but Agnes did not trust Gawain to be left alone with the girl at all. Sure it was probably stupid, and maybe she was jumping to conclusions, but at the moment Agnes did not really seem to care. Besides, she knows what it is like to be a new person in the school and she would rather not have Gawain be her own tour guide…
“Anyways,” she said as she closed her book and held it at her side, “Gawain, how’s your girlfriend?” The question was innocent enough…and also a reminder that she was watching him.
>> "Name's Gawain, official Mansion greeter, at your service. And this lady here is Agnes, one of the Mansion students. Nice to meet you, .....?" >> “It’s a pleasure.”
The two, now identified as Gawain and Agnes, exchanged an uneasy greeting with each other, before offering both of their hands to Lydia to shake. Oh…well, that certainly left her with a predicament. Whose did she shake first? And why did people even like that weird hand contact greeting at all? It was awkward and unnecessary, in her opinion. “It’s nice to meet you both,” she said, taking Gawain’s hand first, and then moving on Agnes. “And it’s Lydia.”
“Official mansion greeter, eh? Is that your excuse for ditching class?” She asked playfully, smirking. He seemed like her type of guy, what with his charming comebacks and generally adorable disposition. The other girl, Agnes, seemed nice enough, despite her constant glaring at Gawain. Lyd wondered if there was a story behind the look, it definitely seemed like they had some sort of history.
>> “Don’t mind another tag-a-long do ya? I need to check on some results from DocProf anyways.”
And then the girl suddenly flashed another smile, this time at both the skin-shifter and Gawain, and asked if she could join them. The teenager couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed that someone would be third-wheeling on her time with the mansion greeter…but still, it was nice to meet such welcoming people. “Of course you can,” she nodded.
>> “Anyways, Gawain, how’s your girlfriend?”
…ooh awkward. Girlfriend? Lydia raised an eyebrow, but kept a smirk on her face. Okay, so the boy was off limits. They could still flirt and talk, that’s just what it would be limited to. Talking. It figured. All the good-looking boys seemed to have girlfriends these days. Darn, he was a cute one.
>>“It’s nice to meet you both. And it’s Lydia. Official mansion greeter, eh? Is that your excuse for ditching class?”
"The best" Gawain nodded with a grin. Yup he was ditching class. It was kind of a habit of his/hers; but at least this time he ended up doing something useful instead of wandering around or hogging the Danger Room. He'd come to terms with the fact that he was not going to become the next super scientist of the mutant world.
>>“Don’t mind another tag-a-long do ya? I need to check on some results from DocProf anyways.”
Gawain smirked at Agnes; she wanted to tag along? Sure. He bit his lip to keep the cheeky comment about 'what results' slipping out; Agnes was a fragile little thing, and the last thing he needed was another black eye from that iron fist of hers.
>>“Anyways, Gawain, how’s your girlfriend?”
... or not. Oooh, so that was what Agnes was glaring about. What, a guy can't be nice to a gal if he's got a girlfriend? Gawain, even though he didn't look the part, was actually the faithful kind (that came with being a knight and a part-time lady). Still, since Agnes was making such a silent fuss about it, the Trickster started to stir.
"Twy? She's fine. Very busy lately." he said, and it was actually true "I'll introduce you two later. I'm sure ya'll love her." he adde with a wink at both girls. Let them deicde what it meant.
Leading the way to the Infirmary, Gawain whistled; after a few tries, the sound of running paws could be heard down the corridor, and then a fairly huge Irish wolfmutt appeared out of nowhere, and flung herself at the mirrorwalker, tail wagging furiously. Gawain took a step back to regain his balance against the attack.
Well that was good, they both seemed to accept Agnes’ offer to tag along with them. That indeed made her feel better. She still did not entirely trust the mirror-walker with the newcomer, but then again, did she really have reason to. Maybe she was jumping to conclusions. After all, though she did not care for the Gawain, Maya she did and Maya she found trustworthy…any they were the same person! So why not? There was no reason to automatically label the mutant as a bad person just because he had a wolfish grin and a trickster’s twinkle in her eye. Not every boy in the world could be a complete jerk.
>> "Twy? She's fine. Very busy lately…I'll introduce you two later. I'm sure ya'll love her."
And just what the hell was THAT supposed to mean?
Okay, so maybe her first instincts about people were true. God how she wanted to blackened his other eye. And she was definitely going to the next chance she got. There was no way she was going to let him get away with that in public…
Agnes narrowed her eyes at Gawain but kept her smile as he glanced to Lydia. That was a nice name and she was happy to meet someone new. She was slowly beginning to unwind after the whole museum incident. She did not want that to get her down any more and so far she had not heard a single peep from her parents. Maybe she would be fine after all. Besides, last she checked, her parents were not really computer savvy so she doubted they would know what something like ViewTube was, much less see a video of her on it.
Pulling away from her train of thought, Agnes watched as Gawain suddenly whistled and a dog came bounding up to them. Immediately Agnes’ heart began to melt a little when the dog appeared. To be honest she simply loved dogs but her parents never wanted to own one. Now there she smiled slightly at the sight of the pet…
>> "And this, this is my girl Angua."
“Aw Gawain, you must be so proud,” she said happily as she nodded back to the mirror-walker. “You look just like her.”
Normally Agnes did not descend to the rank level of arguing and teasing but he deserved it after that crack about her liking his girlfriend. Though he did not explicitly say anything out loud, Agnes was not stupid and understood the connotations behind it. Smiling she waved at the dog as she stood straight, glancing back to Lydia. It was only then that she realized where someone like Gawain could make a connection like that. After all, Agnes did spend most of her time with girls, but that did not mean she LIKE liked them. Who was he to make a joke like that in a time of tolerance?
Yeah…she would punch him extra hard next time she got a chance…
The best huh? Damn, if only he were single, Lydia thought as she smirked at Gawain’s answer. He didn’t seem to be denying he was ditching class, which made her smirk even more. Rule breaking student who worked for the school? That was an interesting combination. It was definitely a contrast from Andrew, who was buddies with cops and seemed to be the rule-following type. When Agnes mentioned his girlfriend the mirror-walker seemed to grow a little surprised, but kept his cool. In fact, a mischievous glint twinkled in his eye as he replied.
>> "Twy? She's fine. Very busy lately. I'll introduce you two later. I'm sure ya'll love her.”
He finished his reply with a wink. A wink? That was random. The teenager shrugged internally, unsure of what to make of it. Maybe he had some inside knowledge with Agnes or something, and the remark was aimed more towards her. That theory was pretty plausible, especially since they already knew each other. It would be weird if he introduced his girlfriend to some girl he had just met. Lydia glanced at Agnes to gauge her reaction to the wink. There was a subtle narrowing of the eyes that the skin-shifter picked up on right before it was hidden with another smile. Interesting. She certainly seemed to have an abundance of dislike or anger towards the boy. Perhaps there really was an inside joke or something between them, and it had offended the brunette.
Gawain started whistling, unexpectedly, as if signaling for someone. Something certainly answered his call. A huge dog came galloping down the hall and charged into her owner, surprising Lyd and making her take a step back. But quickly her shock was replaced with an “awww” and a happy squeal. The dog was so cute! It was really, really big, but cute. She giggled at Agnes’ jab at Gawain, about him looking just like his adorable pet. “You know, they do say that the owner starts looking like the dog after a while… She added cheekily.
“Angua’s a cool name, any special meaning?” She asked as she neared the dog and stuck out a hand to pet her. The Irish wolfhound responded positively to her outstretched hand and seemed to wait for her to start petting it. Most adorable dog ever.
>>“Aw Gawain, you must be so proud. You look just like her.”
Ooh, that was more like it. A smirk and a jab instead of a direct punch. Agnes was getting the hang of this game. Gawain rewarded her with a grin.
>>“You know, they do say that the owner starts looking like the dog after a while… "
"Yeah, ya should see my sister" he chuckled. Emeral sure looked a lot more like Angua, especially on her full moon days. Gawain wished Emerald was around more often. He missed the Lupin kinda fun-and-trouble.
>>“Angua’s a cool name, any special meaning?”
"Yup, she's named after a Terry Pratchett character" he nodded as Angua jumped around like the puppy she was, and licked at Lydia's hands, her long tail drumming on Gawain's tigh in the process "A very badass werewolf. She is also one of the few anyimals in the Mansion that do not shift into Calley Schwarz. So, she's safe to pet."
With a grin, Gawain walked on towards the infirmary, with the two girls and the dog in tow.
Agnes said nothing after her last comment. Instead the attention seemed to switch now to the Gawain’s dog. She was fine with that. She really did not want to get into an arguing match with Gawain right now. As much as the boy irritated her, there was really no need to do that in front of the new arrival. It was rude, uncalled for, and simply bad manners. Besides, there would be plenty of time to sock him in the other eye before long. So with a sigh, she retracted her claws a bit and instead simply let the “mansion greeter” and Lydia talk.
So far from the conversation the girl seemed nice enough. Agnes wondered if she would be staying at the mansion now as a new student. After all that’s what this mansion did right? It opened its doors to runaways and lost mutants who needed a bit of help. They took her in, therefore they must be willing to take in anyone.
Not that that was a knock on Lydia or anything. You just never know why certain people would arrive at the mansion in the first place. Was it entirely so that she could gain a handle on her powers? Did she fear them? Maybe she had a tragic story like hers? The possibilities were endless but Agnes was not going to assume anything about her.
Gawain, on the other hand, she knew a little about. During a previous conversation the gender-shifter had mentioned that for a while s/he had to live on the streets. That was a hard life, especially when having to do it for months on end, especially with a power like his. In a way, Agnes did respect the mutant but most of the time she simply wanted to slug him and that big mouth s/he had. Heh…the last time she had attacked him with a bag of marshmallows for blabbing about her past. Now that s/he was making connotations that made her still want to smack him.
With a sigh, Agnes turned her attention back to large, happy dog that looked way too excited to be around new people. It sniffled, scuffled about unsure of who to go to first and the runaway could only watch partially jealous. Her only pets lately have been the insects to take up residence inside of her chest and those were not exactly the most ideal for walking on a leash or showing people.
Hmm…maybe she should considering getting a pet. So long as her insects would not attack it while she slept. That would always be a fear in the back of her head.
But now the runaway still kept silent as she watched the Lydia and Gawain talk and discuss about who they were. It was not that Agnes wanted to be anti-social, it was simply she preferred watching, observing people rather than interacting. The few people she did interact with were either her best friends, such as Sveta or Gina, or people she wanted to punch straight in the eye, like Gawain.
So in silence she stood back, smiled once more at the dog and simply listened for the conversation as she awaited them heading down to the infirmary.
That wasn’t a very nice comment to make about his sister, Lydia thought as she followed the mansion students to the infirmary. Ah, there was the staircase she had been searching for. But Gawain seemed to have some real emotion behind the statement, certain wistfulness or nostalgia. He was a mutant, obviously demonstrated by his entering and exiting of mirrors, so maybe his sister really did look like a wolfhound. The skin-shifter had always been sort of envious of mutant siblings. A lot of the time they had a super close bond, annoyances and fights aside, because of the anomaly they shared. At least that’s what she usually saw. And no matter how close your friends were, a true sibling-like mutant bond was hard to recreate or copy.
>> "Yup, she's named after a Terry Pratchett character. A very badass werewolf. She is also one of the few animals in the Mansion that do not shift into Calley Schwarz. So, she's safe to pet.”
This statement threw off the teenager a little, as she didn’t know who any of those people were, and didn’t know much about werewolves. She was going to decide to leave that one to Agnes, who had demonstrated a mischievous attitude just a moment ago, but the girl made no reply. “Ah, that’s a relief,” Dia said, starting to scritch scratch at the spot behind Angua’s ears. “I don’t know how I would resist this adorable little thing.” Little was used as a term of endearment instead of literally, of course.
>> "So, Lydia. What's your deal?"
Her deal? What did he mean by deal? As in…reason for coming to the mansion? She had mentioned earlier that she was there to see DocProf. Apparently that explanation wasn’t enough. “Well the ol’ Doc had helped me and some friends a week ago with ah, erm, injuries,” she said with some difficulty. She really would rather not divulge the details of those injuries, such as the nature of them or who had caused them.
Ah, awkward. The skin-shifter scrambled to think of something to say. “Uh, so, what can you two do? I know that you walked out of a mirror a bit ago.” Standard mutation question, it was safe, right?
>>“Ah, that’s a relief. I don’t know how I would resist this adorable little thing.”
"No one can." Gawain smirked. Angua yipped and ran circles around them. She still considered herself a puppy, even though she was already bigger than most dogs ever dream of. Even Bruno was starting to look small beside her.
Agnes was being silent. Angua sniffed at her too, and wagged her tail; maybe she could smell the bugs, Gawain was not sure. But it didn't look like it bothered the dog at all. It might have bothered Agnes.
>>“Uh, so, what can you two do? I know that you walked out of a mirror a bit ago.”
Lydia did not look comfortable with his last question. Gawain wondered if she misunderstood. Yup, she probably did.
"Yeah, I'm a mirrorwalker" he nodded with a smirk "That's pretty much it. I can take other people through the lookin' glass too. And Agnes here" she glanced at the quiet girl with a cheerful smile, no smirk this time "Is a queen bee. Pretty awesome."
>>“Uh, so, what can you two do? I know that you walked out of a mirror a bit ago.”[/color]
>> "Yeah, I'm a mirrorwalker…That's pretty much it. I can take other people through the lookin' glass too. And Agnes here…Is a queen bee. Pretty awesome."
Where was the joke? Where was the wink? Or the grin? Or that Twinkle in his eye? For some reason Gawain was speaking earnestly about her. He was not joking or making fun of her or irritating her…it was a strange sensation.
Normally Agnes would have been irritated by Gawain’s comment about her being a queen bee but in the broadest sense of the term…it was true. It make sense because she did act a little like the queen of all these insects. They all attempted to keep her safe as if she were their everything…hmm….it was only right then that Agnes really seemed to make that connection. Maybe that really was the mystery behind it all. They protected her and kept her safe because they believed she was their queen?
Damn him for figuring that out. she thought.
She really was a little irritated that Gawain had been able to figure it out. It was not his fault, it was simply the best and simplest explanation for what was going on with her powers. Her insects trusted and kept her safe. They made sure that whenever she was threatened, they were always available to jump to the defense.
It really was because she was there all and everything…
She sighed and nodded with a smile to Lydia. “Yea, my…power does have to do with insects. They like to keep me safe from whoever is threatening,” she then eyed Gawain, “Or irritating me.” She then smiled and began to walk in the way of the infirmary, hoping that they would follow her. It was better than cornering the girl in the hallway. At least this way they would be attempting to head in their desired location. “What about you, Lydia? Mutant as well?” she asked innocently enough.
