She has this profound belief in treating people the way she should be treated and no matter if she is a Nobel or not she is no more special than anyone else.
MutationsMutation description: Fire Soul Elemental
Strengths:- She is what people would have called an elemental in ancient times. She can not only control fire, but her soul is fire. She is a being of fire living in a human shell. She has organs and the same body structure as any normal human, but her soul is of fire.
- The elemental soul (will be called elemental from now on for clarity) can exit Kate’s body. When calling upon the elemental, Kate passes out and smoke comes out of her mouth forming into a being made up of dazzling white flames at a temperature of about 1500C.
- Since her soul is made of fire her internal body temp is about 93C or 198F. She has learned to regulate her outward temp to one that won’t harm others, but instead feels as if she has a high grade fever when touched. She can also interact with most of her environment with no overly ill effects unless she so chooses. (See Weaknesses for parts of environment she cannot interact with) Also, because of this high temp, she has a very high metabolism and a strong thirst. She tends to spend a lot of the day drinking nothing but water and can eat pretty much anything without gaining weight.
- She can channel the fire inside of her through her hands, creating fireballs and similar effects.
- She can heat keep things warm things by touching them and raising her own skin temp. She tends to use this on food and drink; trying to use mostly ceramic vessels as they hold higher temperatures better. She has also been known to float a fire ball below or above an object to heat it.
- The silliest thing she can do with her powers is blow a candle on. She’s really useful in a blackout.
- Kate is not affected by heat or fire. Her body is fire resistant and if she leaned on a heat source like an electric stove she would not be burnt.
- Kate has the ability to control the fire around her. (Restrictions in weaknesses)
Weaknesses and Limitations:- When she passes out there is nothing protecting her body. It is an empty shell with no consciousness. It still contains all of her vital organs and if it is killed the elemental dies as well. That being said, her body can indeed be killed by any normal means.
- She is way more powerful in the elemental form, but the amount of fire she can release is limited, just standing in the form gives off very little energy and she can do this for hours with no ill effect. After releasing fire she will eventually get too weak to sustain the form and must return to her body. Under constant use this can take as little as 30 min; it can be longer depending on power usage. As she loses power her fire becomes weaker and the color of her elemental and fire changes, much like a star as it ages, white being the hottest and red being the coolest (Starts at 1500C and gets as low as 550C). As said, once she is red she must return to her body or she will die. If one of the two dies they both die. It is at that point that she must spend her time recharging by sleeping and will likely be out for at least 24 hours. If she uses less energy, she will sleep for a shorter period of time.
- Because of her unusually high internal body temp she has different reactions to the temps around her. When it is between 120 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit she is comfortable. When it is between 85 and 60 she has to wear at least a sweater. When it is 60 to 40 she is bundled up as if for winter weather. When it is lower than 40 she is bundled up like an Eskimo. She tends to not spend time outside during the winter because it is just too cold for her; anything below 20F can actually hurt any exposed part of her skin. Also, as the temp gets lower her food intake gets higher because she is using more energy to keep her body warm. On a summer day she has to eat about 5 or 6 high-carb meals a day, but when it is cold she has to eat almost constantly.
- If her body is taken away from the elemental, the elemental can still return as long as it is within a 5 mile radius. Though, if it is taken out of this radius the connection is too weak for it to be able to pinpoint the exact location of her body. At that point the elemental must hunt down the body before the fire dies out or it will die.
- Though the elemental is still Kate she must give into her darker side to tap into it. The elemental has consciousness and intelligent thought, it still lacks a brain and therefore are no neurons to process things like guilt and emotion. While in the form she is more likely to give into darker impulses and the normally overly caring side of her is almost nonexistent. Because of this the elemental has no problem identifying can identify and eliminate eliminating enemies with no remorse. Once it returns to Kate’s body, however, she retains the new information of every action it performed. Her brain puts together the connections required to retains the memories of her actions and with these memories comes the associated emotions. This is the main reason Kate doesn’t like using the form of the elemental; she has to live with the guilt, anger, and sadness caused by the things it does.
- That being said, since she lacks a brain in the elemental form she cannot be effected with psychic attacks. Though if they are used on her they will take effect once she has returned to her body and the memories and events register within her brain.
- She must use a little of her power every day to keep it in check. The fire within her is too strong for the physical form that holds. If she doesn’t release some of her power every day she will lose control and end up accidently using her powers and releasing fire, kind of like a lid popping off of a pot because of too much pressure.
- That being said she can get to a point where she has used too much power and there isn’t enough to release the elemental form. She only has so much fire within her, but the power she releases from her physical form is nowhere near the power she can release from the elemental form and takes much longer to drain her.
- She can’t burn anything that isn’t flammable.
- When she gets emotional her skin heats up. (e.g. when she is embarrassed her skin gets hot not just red). This makes it very hard to date
- Of course she doesn’t do well against water and ice type powers in the elemental form. If the fire is put out it takes a lot minimal of energy to rerelease the elemental. While she is within her body cold and water effect her as stated above.
- Because she can’t feel heat, she has a hard time telling when she is sick; she can’t feel the “overheatedness” of having a cold or fever, but thanks to her higher internal body temperature most viruses cannot live within her body.
- Most things that would be hot or warm to others feel room temperature or cold to her.
- Because of the nature of her mutation Kate is overly sensitive to cold. She can’t do thinks like touch ice and frozen things directly or at all without the risk of causing frost bite or hurting herself.
- She can throw a fireball as far as she can throw a real ball. She can only achieve within the limitations of her own physical strength.
- Kate now has the ability to control fire. She can affect any flame within a space the size of a house. She can make a fire bigger or put it out, as well as making it hotter or colder.
- Currently the amount of space that she can feel fire in and control fire in is one city block.
- Since her powers grew whenever she gets very angry she can accidentally start small fires around her or any fires that are already around her intensify. This is only in her immediate vicinity, about a 8 foot radius around her, and no matter how she tries she can’t replicate the effect with normal concentration.
Physical AbilitiesGeneral Physical Capabilities: Kate’s primary physical advantage would be her reflexes. It is a big part of how she fights with her mutation and has therefore become a big part of her in general.

Fighting Style Pros/Cons: None
History Of Your CharacterHarriett and Daniel were in love. Their daughter Kate was born only a year after they had gotten married and they were happy. On Kate’s second birthday her parents took her into London to celebrate. It was a perfect day, until about 9 in the evening when they were heading back to the Ritz where they were staying. Now, if you don’t know where the Ritz Carlton is, it is smack dab in the middle of Piccadilly Circus, one of the busiest places in the city. But before I tell you what happened, you should know about Daniel: he was a mutant just like Kate- exact same powers and everything. The only difference is he didn’t have Harriett to push to him control it, so at the time he didn’t have much control and accidents happened. So unsurprisingly, in the middle of Piccadilly a fire ball came flying out of Daniel’s hand and melted part of the famous statue in the center of the square. Lucky for him, there were some newbie police officers who had no idea what had just happened and pulled their guns. When Daniel tried to show he meant no harm and raised his hands, they shot him. In the end, he was laying on the ground with all 6 bullets from the officers’ clips in him. All Kate and Harriett could do was watch him die. He actually burned a hole in the ground before his fire went out. He was gone because of a misunderstanding. Kate was too young to understand what had really happen that day. She actually wouldn’t remember it as anything more than a dream. Her mother had covered her face and she didn’t really see anything. This was lucky because people who didn’t even know him had nightmares.
There was no end to the publicity that followed: ‘Earl of Nottingham shot down in Piccadilly.’ It was everywhere, and the family was poked and prodded by the media. An English lord had been found out to be a mutant. This was big and reports ran with it. The story went Viral and petty soon the Finch-Hatton family couldn’t even leave their home without being hounded. Eventually, they didn’t any more. Harriett retracted their family from the public eye and they lived in their country manor without any interactions with the outside world. Harriett still watched occasionally when she would look at her daughter, and wonder why she was doing this. She would turn on BBC news and she would remember why: the world was a hard place for mutants. She had convinced herself that Kate wouldn’t’ survive without protection. Over time she became more and more deluded and afraid of the people beyond their front gate.
Kate grew up with tutors and servants and her mother. She never saw a kid her own age. All she had was herself, her books, and her movies. Kate loves movies. They are these glimpses into the world outside. She knew it was all fantastical and ridiculous, but for those two hours she could be anywhere but where she was. She didn’t have to worry about her mother and feel bad when she wished she was outside of her gilded cage. She could just sit and watch someone else’s life. They all smiled and though there were bumps on the road everything was happy in the end, but Kate’s world wasn’t like that. All she had was this urge to get up and put on a smile and enjoy what she had, because it was all she was going to get. She cared too much about her mother to not try to be happy, and there was a time that she was… but as every child grows older they have to become their own people and make their own mistakes out in the world. Little did she know she would get her wish, just not quite how she had hoped she would.
Harriett hadn’t been feeling well as of late. It had actually gotten so bad that Jensen, their butler, had forced her to come into town to go to the hospital, but by that point it was too late - she was already too sick for the doctors to help. She had stage 4 cancer and it was inoperable. Harriett knew that she didn’t want Kate to have to watch her die. It wasn’t right for a child to have to go through that. So, she searched the world calling in every favor and asking everyone she had known if there was a place for her daughter. Eventually after about 2 weeks of searching she learned of Xavier’s Institute for Gifted Youngsters. It was a place where Kate could go and be around people like her. She would be safe there and eventually she would have the skills to be in the world. She just needed time. Harriett called the school and lied. She told them that Kate was losing what little control she had of her powers and needed help, and of course, they opened their doors to Kate - why wouldn’t they? In all truth Harriett hadn’t even needed to lie.
Kate fought with her mother and lost. She didn’t want to leave Harriett alone. She had spent so much of her life watching after her mother that she didn’t know if the woman could live without her… but like I said she lost. She flew on a private plane and then got immediately into a car that took her to the school. Kate was in the real world now and she had to figure out how to function. She was free from her physical cage, but that wasn’t the only one she was trapped in.
Her start at Xavier’s School for the Gifted was rather rocky, but somehow she made it through with the help of her small but close group of friends. Gawain/Maya and Sam were really the only people she could find that she could relate to with her weird nature and overly proper ways, but she didn’t mind. She loved them both and the few others she grew to care for like Andrew. Really all in all her time at Xavier’s was good. That was until December came.
In the beginning of December 2010, Kate’s mother passed away from leukemia. She had been sick when she had sent her daughter away and Kate had done nothing but fight with her since. When she got the news it killed her inside. She had been so mean to her mother that she couldn’t imagine how horrible of a daughter she was. She went back to England for the funeral and for the first time in years the doors to Kirby Hall were opened for the event. There were official from all over the country come to pay their respects to the fallen Nobel and the daughter she had left behind to carry the burden of the family name. Kate however didn’t register any of it. She was so lost inside of herself and her thoughts that she was moving on nothing more than auto pilot. It really was no wonder she had done something so stupid as to walk out into the cold winter rain. She had been looking out her window as the drops fell from the sky and she had thought about how much she had yet to experience and she thought of how she had never even felt the rain. As she walked to the front door she didn’t once contemplate the temperature and what it would do to her. For her this was about feeling and freedom not about danger. But it was dangerous. She was only outside for moments before she collapsed into hypothermic shock. Honestly she would have died there if Gawain hadn’t stumbled upon her and dragged her back inside where they could nurse her back to health. Though, by that time the damage was already done.
When she returned to the mansion weeks later she found nothing but whispers. Somehow the news had gotten out of her little scrap with death and everyone seemed to think she had done it on purpose. It wasn’t only here but everywhere she was the suicidal princess of the Finch-Hatton family. Sam had tried to talk to her and make her feel better but nothing stuck. Kate wasn’t sure what she was going to do but she knew she had to get away. If she was going to survive this she couldn’t do it where they knew who she was and what she had done. That is why she randomly bought a plane ticket and left for Rome. She didn’t tell anyone where she was going or that she was going. She just left and hoped for the best. Little did she know that this was really the best decision she had made in her life.
In Rome she locked herself in her hotel for days until she met Hanna that is. Hanna had been asked to come visit her for some assistance with a makeover that she so greatly craved. The girl couldn’t help but think of all the bad when she looked at herself in the mirror and she didn’t want to think of such things anymore. She didn’t want to be the victim anymore or the sad girl. She wanted a chance to find herself again and to start she had to change her hair. Hanna showed up to do just that, but when she got there she found a sad young girl in need of a hand. A hand that she could provide. She picked Kate up and dragged her out into the city. She helped the young Nobel find herself again in a new way. With a new wardrobe and a new look. By the tie she was done Kate was transformed and with the new look came a new outlook. Kate was more confident and felt stronger than ever. She felt like she could take on the world and so she did.
One evening after a late night out, Hanna brought the girls to the flat of a man that she knew that lived close by. She jetted out early to go to work leaving a rather hung over Kate alone with the mysterious and handsome stranger, Albert. Albie cooked her breakfast that morning and they hit if off right away. Albie was in the city on business but never seemed to do any business as he spent a good amount of his time that day and the days that followed with the young Brit. Within a month they were officially dating and though he didn’t actually live in Rome, Albie would find every excuse he could to visit his Blonde Goddess. Sadly however all good things must come to an end and after months away Kate was forced to return because her powers had decided it was time.
Kate went back to the mansion to find her mentor Sam, as she knew he was the only one that could help her. Her powers were going haywire and every time she turned she was lighting something else on fire. She had only barley told Albie she was a mutant and now she couldn’t bare running the risk of almost killing him. It took months but eventually she gained not only the control she craved but a stronger power to boot. Unfortunaly, by that time she had already burnt down her room and gone through what she could only call the scariest time of her life. She kept dreaming about killing those she loved and burning them up. She had been so scared she had forced Sam to lock her away where no one could be hurt by her. It had taken all she had to even leave the safety of the mansion even after she had gained control. She was in school however and being so far uptown was only proving to be more a nescience then anything else.
Kate was a student at Julliard School of Music for her piano and in the middle of her second semester she chose to move closer to the downtown campus. She now lives in a luxury apartment by herself in the center of Manhattan. These days she spends all of her time at school or at home with Hanna, who moved in a month after she did so she wouldn’t have to be alone. All in all Kate’s life is pretty good, but she is still a mutant and it is only a matter of time before the next shoe drops.
RoleplayWhere did you learn about this site?: We are old friends reuniting after a long on and off again thing. But I think this time it is for keeps.
Do you have any other characters on MRO, if so who: Used to have others but they are gone now.
Sample RP:(There are choices of these all over but for the sake of having one here…)
Kate hit the ball with all the force she could muster and it sailed over the net and past her opponent, making sure to hit the ground before passing him. “I win.” Kate said excitedly.
“It would seem you do my lady. You’re getting better every day. Maybe I won’t have to go easy on you next time.” The man on the other side of the net said, sauntering over after picking up the yellow ball, while Kate stuck her tongue out at him playfully, “It would seem we are done for today.” He pointed at a beautiful woman walking casually over to the court. She was wearing a floppy sun hat and a tweed suit. She looked like a politician’s wife at a garden party.
“Mum!” Kate smiled at her mother, genuinely happy to see the woman.
“Hello darling.” Harriett looked at her daughter’s bright smile and was happy to see it again, “How was your lesson?”
“I wiped Thomas again. I really think he’s losing his touch in his old age,” Kate joked, putting her racket on her shoulder nonchalantly.
“Is the student exceeding the teacher?” Harriett asked
“Not just yet…but someday soon she might,” Thomas said, “Well. I will be off. I shall see you both next week.” With that, he grabbed his gym bag and ran toward the house.
“Katherine, we need to have a talk,” Harriett said, breaking the silence as they watched Thomas leave.
Kate knew something was wrong right off the bat. If her mother’s tone hadn’t given it away, the fact that she called her Katherine did; she only ever did this when she was mad or it was serious. “What’s wrong?”
“Let’s go inside and sit down, shall we? We can discuss this there.” Harriett didn’t wait for an answer before beginning the trek back to the house.
Kate’s mind was running a million miles a minute on the walk back. She had thought that her mother had been leaving something out when she had talked to her after she had come home from the doctor. Her mother wasn’t fine and she was finally going to tell her that.
“I think it is time that you go out into the world and make some friends your own age,” Harriett blurted out after they were safely sitting in the music room at the back of the house.
“What brought this on?” Kate looked at her mother, shocked the words had actually come out of her mouth.
“I have been thinking about it a lot as you have gotten older,” Harriett lied, “Eventually you are going to have to leave this place, and I don’t want to you be out there all alone. I can’t leave here anymore, as I’m sure you know.”
“Mum, I can’t leave you alone.”
“I won’t be alone. I will have Jensen and the maids. I will be fine.”
“Historically, you are not fine.”
“Katherine Elizabeth Finch-Hatton, I was fine before you came along and I will be fine long after you have left here. You are an adult and should start living like one. You yourself were talking only months ago about how you wanted to go to university like a proper girl your age,” Harriet said matter-of-factly, trying to end the debate.
“Yes, and then you had a breakdown and the idea was pushed out of my head. If you can’t handle me bringing up the idea of university, how can you handle me actually going to it?” Kate was frantic to prove her point. She couldn’t let her mother get her way this time.
“Kate, I am an adult and your mother. What I say is final. You will be leaving in a week for the school in America. It is a school for people with talents like yours. I can live easy knowing you will be at a place that will accept you for who you are. Do you understand?” Harriett wasn’t having any more of this. She knew Kate would just talk her in circles, trying to convince her that she shouldn’t leave, and eventually she would give in. She had to stop this now before she couldn’t anymore.
“But…” Kate started.
“No! You are going.” With that Harriett stood and exited the room, telling Kate she had lost. Every time Harriett did such things, it was the end of the discussion and it was not to be revisited. So in a week’s time Kate was bound for America.
