Cheet SheetArchive Attribute ProfileIndividualCharacter's full name: Madlaina Elisabeth (former last name Stanasil, but was dropped when she disavowed her family)
Alias/ Nickname/ Code name: (if applicable) Madaline, Maddy, ‘Laina. Code name: ? Maybe 'Cameo'...
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Birthday: March 29th
Nationality/ Ethnicity: Romanian
Birthplace/ Home/ Place of origin: Ploiesti Romania
AppearanceHair color and style:Dark, short, cut in a sort of whispy style, no longer than her shoulders usually. Madlaina tends to let it grow out then cut it short, mostly because she forgets to cut it until it gets in her way.
Eyes: Regularly a light purple/violet color with grey, when she is consciously using her powers they become a much darker purple and the grey turns to black.
Height: 5 foot 8 inches
Build: Sleek and slender with a young woman’s body still growing awkwardly and somewhat disproportionally, with her limbs often seeming longer than she is used to. Maddy is not muscular enough to be svelte or graceful, though she wants to be. The only times Madlaina has any physical grace is when she is using her powers; she gets an eerie style of movement that is almost graceful, like an oracle of sorts. The rest of the time she is a bit clumsy.
Visible mutation: (if applicable) none
Scars/ Tattoos/ Piercings: None, not even pierced ears.
Other features:Everyday clothing style: Madlaina is a fashion disaster, having no idea what is fashionable or cool. She knows it though and calls herself a ‘Fashion-leasta’ instead of fashionista. She tries though, she just doesn’t know how to put it together. She will get a piece of clothing that is fashionable, but will pair it with something ridiculous that ruins anything fashionable about the piece.
Though her clothes are dorky and goofy, she ends up looking kind of cute, like a little sister or girl-next-door that eventually grows up to be pretty and cool. She is the one that isn’t hot yet. She doesn’t have much yet, she lost nearly everything when she had to leave her family, and now has only what she could get from thrift-stores and things she could find.
Uniform: (if applicable)Sleepwear: Warm, flannel pants and flannel top. At the moment though, she is sleeping in whatever clothes she has.
Miscellaneous clothing:CharacterPersonality: (How you character behaves, social tendencies, quirks, etc.) Scared, skittish, fearful, and suspicious. She is frightened of humans and after her time running from the camps she has come to trust only other mutants. Traumatized, she likes to stay in places where she feels safe, places where her powers cannot overwhelm her, and where she knows people can't sneak up on her or hurt her.
Madlaina is cautious, careful, likes to plan ahead, and likes to stick to schedules. If things unexpectedly change or are delayed, she gets skittish, visions of traps and people coming after her always at the back of her mind. She has symptoms of hyper-vigilance… light and troubled sleeping, easily startled by unexpected noises, scanning of her surroundings for threats, vigilant about locking doors or having escape routes, anxious and nervous. She likes a routine but can adapt if given enough warning, however if not given any warning about a change in plans she gets frustrated and tense, easily annoyed and aggravated by small things.
Once she feels safe Maddy is a generally happy girl, very similar to who she was before she was betrayed, chased, and left to fend for herself. Curious, playful, and inquisitive. She likes to explore provide that she feels safe in those explorations, but will quickly retreat or hide if she feels threatened.
Hobbies/ Interests: Madlaina likes animals and building things, and she used to like reading but cannot read English, though she speaks well enough to get her meaning across, so her new hobby is learning English.
Job or part time job and description: (if applicable) None yet, though she doesn’t mind stealing things if she needs to.
Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Being caught by humans or people who want to hurt her. Not being able to block out her powers. She is sometimes worried that she will never sleep again, at least not the way she is supposed to. Frequent nightmares, the memories that are a side effect of her powers, and light sleeping don't make her nights very restful.
She is also worried that her memories might get confused and mixed up with the memories her powers give her.
Special talents: (not related to mutation) She likes doing things with her hands and tends to be good at it, picking up skills quickly. Good at DIY style projects, building things, fixing things, ect…
Morality She would not hurt innocents, but if given the chance or the capability, she would kill any and all who did or would hurt her. She uses a sort of preventative thought process; if she sees a way to hurt or stop someone now, who might hurt her later, she doesn’t have many qualms with it. Her survival instincts drive her more than any morality. But she is young still, and unfortunately malleable in the right hands.
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: (please explain) -2 . Not good, but not strictly evil either. Madlaina doesn’t have the usual morality, but she has her own code of behavior. She doesn’t hurt puppies or babies, so she can't be too bad right….?
Mutations Post Cognition aka Psychometry or Retro-Cognition
Mutation description: Post Cognition. Madlaina has the ability to see the past through touch. She can see the past of objects, animals, or people, simply by using her powers and a touch. She can mentally relive moments/memories in the history of that object or person, as if she were standing there instead of the object/person, but cannot interact or change the memories (she cannot change the perspective by moving or catch something that fell). She can choose times up to 6 months in the past, or she can relive any moment in the objects history but she has no control beyond 6 months and the memory is random.
It is easier and more reliable for Madlaina to use her power on non-living objects, and she has a few ideas why. Living things, such as people or animals, remember things based on their own perceptions and motivations-not how things actually are. The only exception to this rule is with plants, which are alive, but don’t have conscious motivation or needs. They may ‘know’ that they need water and sunlight, but on their own they don’t have the capacity to blame anything for the lack.
Example: A dog might remember being hungry and the human not giving it food when it begged, and Madlaina would get a distorted memory of the human not feeding the dog and the dog being hungry. She might wrongly conclude that the human was a bad pet owner who never fed the dog, when reality is that the human fed the dog the proper amount everyday… just not at the exact moment the dog wanted it.
Example: A person might remember seeing a car crash, and based on their own assumptions of the drivers, wrongly remember who was at fault(an elderly person and a teenager in an accident, and the human assumes the teen is at fault). Or a person might do something wrong, like stab someone, but believe(and because of that belief- would remember) that they had no choice or that the act was provoked. Therefore Madlaina might get the distorted memory of the person being attacked and stabbing in self-defense when it really wasn’t.
Strengths: She can see and experience the past of anything she touches, within approximately 6 months.
Weaknesses: She must be completely focused on the object/person in order to see the past. She is not aware of her real surroundings when using her powers. She is limited by how far back she can look: she can only choose to see moments within the past six months, give or take about a week, and if she tries to see further back than that she is shown a random moment.
Secondary mutation description: (if applicable)Strengths:Weaknesses: Fighting Style (if applicable) Running away. On the rare occasion she might fight she would prefer long distance fighting: though she lacks real world training in any kind of fighting other than Rambo movies.
Explanation: She isn’t good at fighting, and would much rather run away to some place safe. But she plans to learn when she can.
Pros for fighting style: um… safer?
Cons for fighting style: Not very useful…
Faction Allegiance
The X-men/ The Order/ The Kabal/ Other/ Unaffiliated None yet, though she was impressed by the actions of the Xmen in ending the Registration, and if she gets to America, she hopes to join with them.
History Of Your Character: Descended from Roma gypsies, her family was not well educated, and worked in trade and blue collar jobs. At fifteen Madlaina was unaware of her powers, weak at the time and not dangerous, and she was not picked up by the first Romanian Registration act. Though unaware of her own mutant gene, she didn't like or support the Registration act, and watched the news of both the US and Romanian efforts against mutants. But at fifteen there wasn't much she could do, and simply continued living her life; going to school, hanging out with her friends, and working her odd jobs.
Shortly after her sixteenth birthday she realized that she was a mutant. The first Registration act had been revoked and she thought that would be the end of it. She told her parents what she thought she could do, and at first they were surprised, but didn't seem very worried or upset. But with the tensions only rising after the imprisoned mutants were freed, the atmosphere in the house changed too. Soon Madlaina was like an outsider in her own family. Then the new Registration Act was passed.
Had the mutant registration not happened, Maddy would have been the first Stanasil to graduate from high school, despite not being the oldest child. With several brothers and sisters, as well as extended family (aunts, uncles, and cousins) living together and nearby, all working with each other in a close knit web. Madlaina was accustomed to chaos and handled it well before she was taken, and despite her new status as the black sheep, she loved her family.
Her family, from what she could tell, didn't have any other mutants in it. The way the family had changed towards her should have been a warning that she wasn't as safe as she felt. Her parents turned her in as a mutant, with the apparent consent of the rest of the family, calling the government themselves to have Maddy picked up and taken away. However, her younger sister warned her in time to barely get away, with nothing more than her backpack and the few personal items she had with her.
After about week living on the streets she was picked up for a non-mutant related charge, and Madlaina managed to escape while in transport to Bucharest before they realized she was a mutant, thanks in part to her powers and in part to her skills of persuasion and clumsy theft. Those two events, her family's betrayal and her encounter with the government, were enough to scare Madlaina into hiding.
After that, she retreated off the streets and began living on the outskirts of Bucharest, even in the sewers, abandoned subway routes, and other various underground passages that existed. She eventually met with other mutants who were hiding and joined them, forming a small group of surrogate family. They managed to stay out of the camps, thanks to luck and being careful. Madlaina developed a kind of paranoia, a heightened survival instinct, and went a bit feral.
After the Registration Act was revoked and the mutant internment camps were disassembled, she met someone with information. Madlaina had already decided to get out of Romania, she no longer felt safe there, and after hearing and reading about the X-men's efforts to free the imprisoned mutants, she knew where she wanted to go. The man gave her a phone number that would get her in contact someone who could help. The others, the mutants who had kept each other safe and trusted no one else, didn't want to go with her to America. Instead they were going to try and get a little house together somewhere in Europe.
So Madlaina was on her own again. She called the number she was given and they gave her a location. But before she went to the address, she went home… To confront her family.
They had excuses. They said that she endangered the rest of them. Her family remembered communism, the government imprisoning people for life for disobedience, stories that had been told to all of them through out their lives. So they barely hesitated before turning her over to the government in exchange for their freedom from persecution. Her grandmother had disagreed with the decision, she and Maddy's younger sister Emiliana were the only ones who smiled at her when she arrived. Her grandfather had passed away while Madlaina was on the streets.
After the long argument Madlaina left, returning to Bucharest and trying to reach the location she had been given. She gave up her last name, and now only plans to stay in contact with her grandmother and sister, through occasional letters and short phone calls. The rest of the family, to them she is dead, and to her so are they.
These months have informed Maddy's new view of the world. To her it is full of fear and betrayal, no one to be trusted except mutants, and humans are to be feared. She is still only a child, still confused and afraid, unsure of herself and her place, interpreting everything through her new lens of fear. She hopes to be on her way to America by her seventeenth birthday. Madlaina doesn't want to spend another year in the country that she feels betrayed her.
RoleplayWhere did you learn about this site?: I don’t remember. Google?
Do you have any other characters on MRO, if so who: Jaxon
Sample RP:Madlaina sat in the dark of the kitchen. She knew this room and this house; raised in it her whole life. It was easy to find her way in the dark, to avoid the places where the floor creaked…The laminate pattern under her feet was familiar. The room smelled of the soap used to clean it, the bread that had cooked in the oven, the stew that had simmered for hours probably the day before… It seemed like it wasn't really the life she had lived. Like they were the memories of someone else, a feeling that she was familiar with by now, thanks to her
mutant powers.
The sound of feet and laughing voices outside the door meant they were back. Madlaina looked at where her fingers traced the patterns of the wooden dinner table, waiting. Where were they coming from? Dinner with the aunts and uncles? A movie? Maybe one of her siblings had a school activity?
The key turned in the lock, the knob turned and the door opened, a shadowed hand flicking the light as a breeze carrying the cold and the voices inside. Her mother took a few steps into the room before she saw her, but when she did she stopped. Madlaina's father stood in the doorway, silence slowly descending on the group. Her brothers, sisters and grandmother who were still outside felt the tension and the smiles faded as they tried to peer around the man.
Madlaina smiled a slow smile and looked up from her hand.
"Hello mother, father… It was her little sister Emiliana, the one who had warned her and helped her escape, who said her name. The others seemed almost afraid to say it.
"Maddy!" She pushed past her father, standing in the kitchen staring at her older sister with a small smile, but didn't approach.
After another silent moment, their father stepped to the side letting the rest of the family come in before he closed the door. Madlaina nodded to her two older brothers and one older sister who had turned on her. It felt strange that these two young men had once protected her, defended her to other school kids or taught her to play games. Her older sister had taught her to do her hair and tried to help Maddy's deplorable fashion sense before giving up on it. These were people who had claimed to love Madlaina, who had acted like they did, until they agreed that mutants had no place in this family.
Her grandmother, Amelia, took one look at the situation and huffed as only an old woman fed up with the behavior of younglings could. Unwrapping her scarf, she walked like a woman of purpose, stopping in front of Madlaina, who looked up at her.
“Don’t just sit there girl, stand up and give me a hug.”Madlaina’s mother sighed impatiently.
“Mother…”But Amelia interrupted her daughter.
“Don’t you ‘Mother’ me Teofila. My beautiful, far too thin grand-daughter is here, and I haven’t seen her in far too long.” Her tone booked no argument, and she looked at Madlaina, apology for her daughter in her eyes.
Then after a soft, warm, powder smelling hug, Amelia ushered the other children out of the room, leaving Madlaina alone with her parents.
“Now, if you leave without saying goodbye to me I will be very upset Madlaina…”A few moments of awkward silence lingered, then Teofila spoke.
“What are you doing here?”Madlaina stood feeling disconnected from the situation as she spoke. She raged against her mother and father with her words. Her parents raged back. It went on for nearly an hour before Madlaina was tired of it. In the middle of a statement her mother was making, she walked away.
”Don’t you walk away from me, young lady! I am still your mother!”Madlaina stopped on her way up the stairs, her purple eyes turning to bore into her mother’s lighter blue ones.
”I will walk away from you, because you made me run away from you. You are no longer my mother - you gave up that privilege. I have no traitorous family, and you have no mutant daughter.”With slow steps she continued up the stairs, passing the open doors that held the staring eyes of her siblings. She turned into one, Emiliana's room that they had formerly shared. After few minutes of soft speaking, Madlaina left with a few of her belongings that she had been forced to leave without.
She moved back down the stairs, and to her grandmother’s room and stood in the doorway waiting to be invited in.
“Grandmother?”The older woman looked up from her book, pretending that she was surprised to see her, that she hadn’t heard the argument or her footsteps up and then back down the stairs. Her smile was warm and with a movement of her hand she beckoned the young girl closer.
Madlaina sat on the corner of the bed nearest her grandmother’s rocking chair.
“Hello darling… I… I am sorry for your mother’s actions.” She shook her head.
“When she told me about you I thought she meant to send you someplace good and safe, someplace that would help you. Not to the ones who would hurt you.”
“I never meant for your grandfather’s and my stories to have that effect. To turn you in to protect the rest of the family? No no… it wasn’t right. Families should protect each other, not sacrifice one to save the rest. I worried for you…”The elderly woman’s eyes filled with tears but didn’t spill onto her cheeks. And she stood, reaching into a drawer. Taking Madlaina’s hand, cold metal slipped into her palm. She smiled, gave her hands a squeeze and walked to the closet. When Maddy looked in her hand she found her grandmother’s cameo, said to be made in the image of Amelia’s grandmother, and on the same chain her grandfather’s pocket watch.
“Grandmother… I can’t take these!”Amelia made a noise from the closet and pulled out a coat. Navy blue and wool, it was still a beautiful peacoat that had been well preserved from the 50s.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Maddy. I would rather give it to you than anyone else. You deserve it. You need to know that someone loves you. And you need the luck. I have a feeling you will live a much harder life than my other grandchildren. And this way, when they look down from heaven, they will always be able to find you and protect you.”Oh grandma… you have no idea. After protesting a bit more, while Amelia worked Madlaina into the coat and got the chain over her head, Maddy gave up. There was just no arguing with her grandmother. So when she left the house, she took those memories with her, everything those items had ever seen now was hers to explore. The items were old, and had seen more than most. They really would comfort her, more than her grandmother knew.
She told her grandmother her plan, to go to America, and promised to write or call if she could. Maddy knew her grandmother and sister were worried for her, but she couldn't stay.
Walking down the street, hands in the pockets of the too big coat, a new heaviness around her neck, she started finding her way to the address she had been given.
