The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

((OOC: Thread happens around the 23rd of April.))
The fun hadn't started yet. They were still both in the eye of the storm. The signs of what was to come flowed around them like powerful winds. Men in animal outfits walked amidst a zoo full of charming mascots. A squirrel costume wearing a girl in bought ice cream. Groups of teens marched with cardboard announcements held against their sides. Aurum wasn't aware yet what all these signs meant. He was too busy on his date with the green gorgon in shades. He also wore shades. It was a bright day, but they were too cool to care.
"So, how've you been?" Aurum said. He looked to Andrea as they walked down a paved path at the Central Park Zoo. He'd finally gotten around to calling her out. There'd been a lull in the Magician case, while paperwork was processed. The truth still eluded him. He'd decided to take his mind off it. If he was lucky, there'd be a 'eureka' moment. If he was very lucky, it'd be a good date.
"Oh, look at that," Aurum swung the focus to a sign for the polar bear exhibit. It was close by, in the polar bear house. The sign had a big white bear on his hind legs, pointing. He wore the stupidest grin. A grin Aurum mimicked. "We should go check it out."
Andrea was troubled. Not by any illness or bully, nor a nightmare. No, she was troubled by a man. A man she couldn’t figure out. Aurum had called, inviting her out, while she had been in the middle of a brooding session. Of course she couldn’t turn him down, he was a good person and a friend. It would have been rude to tell him no with no good reason at hand. Mention of the Zoo spiked her curiosity, for she had never been to a Zoo before in her life. Right off the bat she wanted to see the bears and lions, and the tigers and chimps. All of the things she had seen on TV while growing up and read about in books. When they arrived however, her mental image of the Zoo was over turned- since when did it have people in costumes… with signs? Her head tilted automatically, and she turned it to Aurum when he asked her how she had been. Costume toting people would have to wait… “Oh, I’ve been fine. Pretty busy with work and… things…” She could feel a light blush creep up her cheeks and fought desperately to push it back. The things she had mentioned also happened to be the man that was plaguing her thoughts. He was the reason she felt conflicted and confused, and just a little bit angry.
“What about yourself, Aurum? How have you been…?”
His ‘oh, look at that..’ Caught her attention and she paused, her feet stilling at his side as they switched directions. A polar bear? She had seen those on TV as well. “Polar bear exhibit? sure!” An arctic bear that could grow taller and wider than a full grown man… Good thing there was a hefty thickness of glass separating the bears from them. With the fear of becoming a fuzzy mammals dinner safely tucked away into the furthest reaches of her mind, she found herself turning again to thoughts about dating and relationships. Her eyes traveled to Aurum slowly, before she blinked and turned her gaze away to stare at a passing plaque on the wall- which offered more information on the fuzzy white bears. Should she ask Aurum what his thoughts on the subject were?… would be care to hear it? her logic pointed out that he had referred to their last outing as a date… which probably made the Zoo visit a date too. So… didn’t that make him a kind of dating expert? With an inward shrug, she decided that it couldn’t hurt anything to simply ask…

>>“Oh, I’ve been fine. Pretty busy with work and… things…”
Why was she blushing? "Things?" He replied. "What sort of things?"
>>“What about yourself, Aurum? How have you been…?”
She turned the conversation back to him. Aurum smiled. "I've been good. I started an apprenticeship at a law firm. Right now, we're working on my first case." The enthusiasm was evident in his voice. This was a big deal. Almost as big a deal as giant white bears, which he turned her attention to as soon as the opportunity arose.
They made it into the bear house, and were blindsided by magnificence. A field of white, with water, and lounging bears greeted them. One bear yawned at their arrival. Aurum looked at the group of animals with a grin. They always seemed bigger on TV... though, maybe that was the thickness of the glass and their distance doing the talking, and the fact those television shows usually focused on bears off in the middle of ice floes.
He read off the plaque on the wall silently to himself, hoping to glean some sort of impressive fact off it to share. With his eyes fixated on the pictures and information, he missed Andrea's initial sweep.
Another minute passed, then he broke the silence.
"Male polar bears may grow 10 feet tall and weigh over 1400 pounds... Females reach seven feet and weigh 650 pounds. In the wild polar bears live up to age 25. Wow." He looked to Andrea. "That's pretty big. Which is odd, because according to this, their babies are smaller than human babies when they're first born... like, the size of a rat."
He paused to ponder that thought. Rat-bears. Hmmmm....
By the time he spoke again, she was standing near a life sized picture of a polar bear, comparing her height to its. If it was ten feet... and she was around five.. She took the fact that she was staring at it's elbow as a hint and moved away to stand by Aurum once again. He had asked her what she meant by 'things'... so, she would tell him- or at least ask the questions on her mind. but first, she had a few questions of her own. "What case are you working on, Aurum? or... are you allowed to talk about it?... I do not mean to pry."
What he had explained about the bears was next on her mind, and she found herself mentally measuring about the size of a rat compared to the picture she had been standing next to. "Aw... that sounds so very cute!" Until it grew too big to fit through doorways and tried to maul her to death. And then her mind flashed back to what was currently plaguing her...
"Aurum... I have a question. Have you ever...um... liked someone- but were unsure of how to approach him?" Had that come out right?...yes... it seemed to have. She felt her face heat up again and coughed into a fist. It was an uncomfortable subject for her, hopefully not for him though...

Had she just been measuring her height against the bear's height?
Cute.
>>"What case are you working on, Aurum? or... are you allowed to talk about it?... I do not mean to pry."
She asked him.
"Sorry," Aurum let his shades slip down the bridge of his nose as he tilted his head forwards. He looked her in the eye seriously over the frame. "If I told you that, I'd have to maul you." A smirk. "Or, better put, I can't really talk to you about it. Top secret." Confidential things usually were. The shades slid back up.
He shook his thoughts of bears when her last question came out.
>>"Aurum... I have a question. Have you ever...um... liked someone- but were unsure of how to approach him?"
Aurum paused. When a girl asked you something like that, that was proper procedure, pausing. Maybe wondering how others would answer such a question? One person might smirk, and answer confidently, another might seek further clarification... but how would he respond?
He wouldn't assume.
"Once, when I was younger, with a cute girl. Never with a 'him'." ... Never with a him. Way to go, Aurum. Nice. "Do you have someone you like?" Aurum continued, unimpeded by the second-guessing, or the urge to ask (perhaps too confidently) 'Is it me'.
Andrea fiddled with her coat zipper for a moment, feeling the heat levels of her cheeks getting hotter. Did she like someone?...well, that was a question she hadn't fully looked into yet. Yes, she liked him- he made her laugh... and he stood up to people for her (even if it wasn't their fault...) and he seemed to be someone she could rely on... but... did she like him like him? "I uh... I guess. We've only been on a two dates so far..." Soo... Her nose wrinkled again and her zipper fiddling intensified. What did two dates mean?... She was growing more confused by the moment.
Where exactly was she going with this?... asking Aurum; he didn't need to suffer through her indecisiveness. As if to aid her in changing the subject, two of the large bears had come closer to the window- peering inside curiously as they peered out. "Oh! Look...it came over to us..." The gorgon pressed her hands to the glass and stood on her tippy toes in order to get closer (and hopefully see better).

>> "I uh... I guess. We've only been on a two dates so far..."
Two dates. Oh. Well, he'd only been on one date with her. This would be the second. She wasn't talking about him. That kind of hurt.
Still, he wasn't the kind of guy to get bitter over that. And they were at the zoo, near polar bears. You couldn't really be bitter when a bear twice your size was swimming in cold water. It didn't work that way.
So...
Why wasn't anyone saying anything? This was kinda awkward. He supposed he'd have to bear it, though.
The excitement that had stemmed from the bears little visit crashed around her feet. She was generally confused for the first five seconds after he had asked her the question, and then a little bit flustered as she tried to figure out what to say. Had he really asked what she thought he had asked? The logical part of her mind kicked into gear and the color washed from her cheeks. She turned away from the glass and swimming bears to face him, letting her hands drop back into fiddling with her coat.
Oh. She knew what he meant now. "W-what?" Had she hurt him? They had been on a...date, yes, but.. she hadn't figured that he liked her in any type of way other than friendly. Compared to how Saphirus had showed his interest had been rather frank, and Aurum had been nothing but a complete gentleman so it was obvious that he-...no, wait... she had that backwards. Her confusion tripled. "Ah...um...N-no. I mean, well, I though we... Ah, my head hurts.." Applying a palm to her temple didn't seem to help, so she simply turned around again to try and wade though the slosh of incomplete thoughts and feelings and hopefully force back an up and coming headache.

"I see," Aurum said. It was obvious to him now it wasn't him. She probably didn't mean anything by it. He hadn't been that clear this was a date, had he?
He thought he had...
That was too bad. "If it isn't, that's okay." He shrugged, trying to be a bigger man. "We can still be friends. But if you care about this other guy... can I give you a word of advice?"
While she felt a little better after seeing that Aurum was okay... she still felt guilty for not seeing it before. "I am sorry.... I am just terrible when it comes to... things of this nature... I-" The words caught in her throat and she paused. What was she to say? I like the man... but at the same time I don't really know what liking someone means... It was all too confusing. She smiled faintly at his assurance that they were still friends, and shifted on her feet, scratching at her cheek carefully.
"-I did not realize you felt that way...or...whatever.. you were talking about..." Her cheeks flushed from embarrassment, and she turned to study the curious bears some more. "Uh... go ahead Aurum, I don't mine advice... " She finished lamely in reference to his advice, stopping the rampage her tongue had gone on. What a disaster... she never should have said anything...

It was okay. She could apologize all she liked. It didn't matter anymore. He wasn't hurt, or annoyed, or even a little bit bitter. All that mattered was that she knew the advice.
He waited for her to finish, then gave it.
"If you like this guy, be up front about it. Don't hide your true feelings, and don't play him. We men are big crybabies when it comes to that... He'll appreciate it, even if you're just telling him you might, but you don't know..." That was it. That was his big 'relationship advice' spiel. Aurum was done.
He looked to the bear. It really was huge, wasn't it?
After listening to what he had to say, her flush dissipated and she felt a little less embarrassed... also a little less guilty. "Thank you Aurum... You are a really good friend, you know that?" Her smile brightened, and she turned from the glass, hopping over to him in order to glance around better. "I will have to bake you a treat or something, because you are so awesome." Her eyes flitted back to large polar bear on the wall, and caught sight of small dark blobs in the background. Squinting, she notice that they were penguins... and her level of excitement spiked in a childlike fashion. "Oh! Penguins! Do they have penguins here? Lets go look!"
Her gloved hand snatched up his right hand and the thin Greek tried to tug him from the polar bear exhibit. Whether he simply humored her and tagged along, or if she was strong than she had anticipated, pretty soon they were outside... of course, once outside... Andrea wanted to turn around and head right back in. What greeted them was utter chaos. A giraffe walked by with people running around its legs. Screams could be heard further off into the zoo, and as Andrea took a step further out a fuzzy, red coated animal turned the corner and stopped- staring at them with its head tilted. "...uh..." Andre retreated a step, "... what is that, Aurum?"
More screams sprang up, and Andrea watched as one of the polar bears that she had seen previously swimming lumbered on by the exhibit exit, still dripping wet from the water- it thankfully didn't seem to notice them. "What happened...?" She asked softly, before catching sight of two people dressed in animal costumes further down the pathway. They hefted signs in the air, and pumped their fists as zoo goers as they rushed for the exits.

The bear looked back.
He was puny, wasn't he? Even if he was trying to be the bigger man...
>>"Thank you Aurum... You are a really good friend, you know that?"
Aurum offered a weak smile.
>>"I will have to bake you a treat or something, because you are so awesome."
"You really don't have to," He said. He was just glad she was feeling better, and that this hadn't gone downhill in each of the worst possible ways.
Ways like him suddenly asking who the guy was, or why the guy was better than him? Those would be bad now. Obvious jealously, also bad. So--
>>"Oh! Penguins! Do they have penguins here? Lets go look!"
Thoughts, interrupted, he was pulled towards penguins. Aurum didn't know what to think, so he let her lead him on. Penguins. Yeah. Penguins were cool. And leaving the emotional subject they'd just discussed in the past, to salvage the rest of the date, and avoid brooding over an injured pride? Also cool! Aurum pasted a smile on his face, and stumbled along after her. "Penguins, huh. Those are cute... and... uh... is that a giraffe?" The rest of his thought patterns kind of went out the window at the giraffe.
They turned a corner, and were met with the beady eyes of a red panda.
>>"...uh..."
They both took a step back from the little critter.
>>"... what is that, Aurum?"
Another scream behind him made Aurum jump! He snapped off his shades, and slipped them into a shirt pocket. "Panda-monium..." He muttered.
Somewhere in the distance, someone shouted "YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
One of the two animal rights activists pumped their fist as the polar bear lumbered. In the sky, a flurry of birds flew by.
"This isn't good..." Aurum noted.
"Scree scree scree!!"
His eyes dropped to a group of piglets running free, and rose to their source, a girl in a squirrel costume bent over an open cage.
"And it just got worse... Hey you!" He shouted. "Who are you!?"
"UMHAPI!!" Her voice shot back at him. The squirrel girl thrust a pointer finger straight his way. "We set the animals free! They don't deserve to be stuck in cages, to be watched for amusement by people like y--" She paused, and looked up. The giraffe loomed overhead. "Uh."
"... Andrea, let's get out of here." He reached out, and grabbed her hand.
It was fate. This was the thought running through his mind as he made his way from the bus station toward the zoo entrance. The thought was way more accurate than he ever could have guessed at that moment. He had been surfing the web randomly after visiting the hero website and telling them about his odd encounter with a mutant who could stop powers in their tracks. His post hadn't gotten any responses if the first few minutes, so he wiki'd an random page, and blam! UMHAPI. Some weird environmentalist group. For the laughs, he went to their home page, and saw, plastered openly, an announcement posted that morning that "Central Park Invasion" was on, and that the monsters who kept those poor animals in cages wouldn't see what was coming.
It had to be fate that he had found out about a plot just in time to solve it, and in such a way!
He had been beating himself up the whole three transfer bus ride there, a sight that caused quite a few odd looks to be thrown his way, especially because he was wearing his spandex super-hero costume. He made the hobble to the entrance to the zoo rather quickly, and hopped over the revolver; the guards didn't notice, because the lions were distracting them. Alright... He caught sight of a man in a chipmunk outfit with a big sign trying to open the grizzly bear pens. "Oh no you don't, foul villain! Behold, The Masochist is here to... eh... crap... eh.. STOP YOU!" At least he'd gotten further in his heroic schpeal... he reminded himself to practice it more. The man turned to look at him with a raised eyebrow, and then was grabbed by the grizzly bear, who had just realized his cage was open, and a large fuzzy thing was right in front of the door. Saph blinked a few times... was he gonna fight a bear for some idiot? Nope. He hobbled up and closed the cage, running off to the next person that needed help.
This isn't good... She couldn't agree more. The red cat/dog/bear thing grew bored of them and turned to leave, just about the same time the troop of wee piggy's went scattering past. She raised an eyebrow at the girl in the squirrel costume. "...um...hapi...?" Perhaps it was the very comical nature of the chaos around her, or the fact that she didn't feel all that threatened by people in fuzzy suits... She wasn't taking this very seriously.... At least, not until Aurum grabbed her hand and mentioned that they should leave. Then... it seemed kind of serious, and more than a little scary.
"Alright Aurum."
She followed him but a few steps, before a high pitched screeching reached her ears. The twenty two year old whipped around to spot one of the piglets that had happened by earlier clamped in the jaws of a large cat. A very large cat. What kind of cat she couldn't tell right off the bat. All she knew was that it had one dying piglet in its maw already, and she couldn't bear to see- or hear- another die. Her hand slipped out of Aurum's and she darted away, calling over her should a quick, "I will be back!"
With the rest of the piggy's cornered against a wall, she had to duck in front of them to stop the progress of the hungry feline. Whoever had let it out of it's cage probably hadn't taken into consideration the time schedule on which the big cat was fed- it was hungry, and there were endless meal opportunities scurrying about its feet. The cat, a snow leopard that had just been flown into from southeast Asia, growled deep in its throat and buckled down, getting ready to pounce. The piglets behind Andrea took to flight, scattering around her in ever direction now that the cat was focused on her. In one fluid motion, Andrea reached up and tore her glasses off, catching the big cat with a one on one stare down right as it sprang towards her. It froze mid flight, before colliding with the ground as she stepped out of the way.
Turning from the unconscious feline, Andrea spotted one shivering Piglet left, and moved to it, sweeping the poor creature up into her arms. "It's alright wee one... you are safe now." She unzipped her coat and secure it inside with its small head peeking out, before closing the zipper again.
