The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Cold.
That was the predominant feeling seeping through her body. The thin and worn T-shirt and jeans didn't help. And neither did the chilling wind sweeping through the expanse of Central Park.
But she was used to it. It was her lot in life, after all.
She had a dream last night. Flashes of corridors, the onrushing of wind, a vague feeling of something warm and uplifting. The moon hanging in the night sky, illuminating the densely packed city all about, which shone its own illumination back into the night sky, setting it aglow. People moving, talking, interacting, but many tucked away in dreams. Angelic song, wafting through the night, and the rustling of a white dress.
Lately, all her dreams tended to be like this. She didn't know why, and she didn't even think of questioning it. It was becoming the one bright spot in her life... but like all dreams, she knew this couldn't last. Dreams end. Dreams are not reality. And one can never escape from reality.
Reality is a cruel mistress. But that is her lot in life.
She thought back to that feeling of warmth and uplift. It was a strange feeling, even if she could only vaguely recall it. But she almost immeadiately pushed that thought aside. Whatever the feeling was, it was not something that she deserved. It was better left to the realm of dreams.
This cold... this was reality.
Jessica knelt down next to the kitten. It looked up at her and mewed, it seemed, piteously. The girl smiled wanly in return.
"Are you cold, little kitty?"
It mewed again. Jessica reached over, and gathered the little mammal into her arms, hugging it close to her. It was but a temporary respite, she knew... She could never take it back to the home. And in this weather, the kitten's chances of survival... No. For now, she could bring a little warmth, however transitionary, to someone else.
It was the least she could do. Before she returned to the real world.

It had been a few weeks since he'd gotten back from Hell. Those weeks of blindness and brutality in Romania had finally ended. His neck still ached from the shock collar, and the past few nights, Shin had had Camp-themed nightmares... it really had been horrible. He still hadn't called Kasumi since his return. Shin supposed it was because he was weak. Weak to get thrown into the camps in the first place, too weak to prevent the carnage, puny enough to get shoved around by camp guards, and carry corpses to the fire. He still didn't know if he could accept that side of humanity. The uncaring, mutant-hating side. Shin was a lightweight. He hadn't even thought to pick Thor up yet from Katrina. Ever since he'd returned, his thoughts had been distracted.
Distracted by numbers. Distracted by the grid. Distracted by worries. Distracted by beating himself up. Normal hippy dippy Shin would have dashed to the danger room, wouldn't he have? To try the new powers he'd gained in the camps out? Normal loopy goofy Shin would have escaped into Kamen Rider at the first sign of trouble, or hunkered down in Kasumi's room to talk. Any normal Shin would have been happier, and more than willing to do his jobs at the Full Circle, greet students at the mansion, be an X-man... any normal Shin would have done these things, and been well-adjusted. But that was the thing... he wasn't any normal Shin.
Ladies and gentlemen, this Shin was bruised... both morally, and physically. Like a spoiled banana. He'd seen the harder side of humanity that hated the different, and locked it away. He'd seen Sunshine on a cloudy day. She'd summoned rain clouds, to drive consciousness away... and I'll bet you'd say what could make him feel this way...? His girl...
Talking 'bout his little girl. Kasumi.
He could handle moral questions. He could deal with the fact he'd been locked away in the camps, unable to see, or even do math, forced to sing the same lame songs, and hang around with mutants he didn't know, and get help from those he did. He could compartmentalize the horror, and even justify his use of vicious force if he had to. Because he'd had to, and desperate times called for desperate measures. If the moment called for motor bike stealing, he could deal. If it called for adapting to the body of a big red giant, he was okay with that, but worrying about Kasumi... that constant, ever-present butterfly atom bomb of angst in the pit of his stomach. He couldn't handle that.
And so, Shin wandered through Central Park, distracted by a whirlwind of conflicting and agreeing thoughts that'd make any air elemental's head spin. Hopelessly hopeless. Worried about why he was worried. Edging on anti-social... distraught. Wondering if he could still love her, when she willingly put her life on the line... when he saw it.
A girl playing with an adorable little kitten.
It momentarily melted his heart.
Medic.
The distance between Shin and the short girl and the kitten closed, from eleven feet, to 7 feet, to 5 feet, to four... he stood over them, eyes locked on the little furball in the girl's hands. On the grid, the larger percentage of the feline's fur was black, with 20% whiteness across its chest. Orange blotches covered the tips of its black legs at the paw, like each foot had been dipped in butterscotch. It also covered its face, save a spot of black around the right eye, similar to an eye patch. It was a calico. It was exactly 0 inches from the chest of the short girl who was holding it, and it looked cold...
Spotted calico cuteness overload.
Shin liked spots.
They reminded him of Kasumi.
Shin frowned.
"Dammit..."
He stopped, and covered his mouth. Maybe that had come out louder than he'd intended?

Jessica had her eyes closed as she hugged the kitten. Thus it was that she did not sense the stranger approach her, nor notice him tower over her and the kitten.
But one spoken word shook her into the present.
The girl's eyes sprung open, and she fell backwards with a startled jerk; her hug on the kitten tightened, which mewed in protest. She stared fearfully up at the man.

" . . . uhhhh." She'd fallen down. What was... the well-adjusted thing to do here, when a girl fell on the grass-shaded part of the grid? "Sorry...?"
Asking sorry as a question, Shin, is most certainly not the correct answer. Shin shook his head, and tried again. "You okay? I didn't mean to spook you, it's just..." His voice fell with his face. He really wasn't in the mood to talk with strangers. "I wasn't thinking..." About other people. He was only stuck on himself.

A mutant! Jessica's eyes widened at the sight of the pupils. She'd heard stories about them... though until now she had barely paid attention. So startled was she that the man's words didn't register - at least, not at first.
She pulled the kitten tighter to herself; it mewed unhappily in response, squeezed by the girl's tight grip. But she barely noticed, staring up into those triangle pupils.
"Are... are you going to hurt me?" The words came out almost as a whisper.

Jessica cringed a little when the man frowned, but then he spoke, and she blinked.
"You're... not?"
Then the rest of his words registered, and she flushed, loosening her grip on the kitten. The small mammal slipped out of the girl's arms, and landed noiselessly on the ground. It looked up at Jessica and mewed once. The girl looked back.
"I'm sorry, kitty."
The kitten mewed again, then turned to look up at the man. Jessica kept her eyes downcast for the moment, though... somehow, she was at fault for the situation. She didn't question why.

Shin shook his head. "I don't make it a habit to do mean things. Usually, I'm the one doing the nice stuff..." Usually. Contemplating break-ups over trivial-yet-severe issues wasn't what he'd consider 'nice'. His eyes dropped to her downcast look. "Speaking of... are you alright?"
Like the kitten, the girl also looked a bit cold. It wasn't really his place to offer aid if she didn't need, or want, it, but... he was an X-man, after all. The least he could do was ask. If she was worrying about other people hurting her, the possibility existed someone, somewhere, made a habit of it... Shin didn't like that thought.

Jessica looked up, startled. Was he... showing concern for her?
No. It was probably just an obligation. Like those back at the home.
She smiled wanly. "I'm... alright, sir." Just then, a gust of wind swept through the park, and she shivered involuntarily, pulling her knees up to her chest. She was used to the cold, but it did not mean that she was immune to it.

Yup, definitely cold. It was a shame he didn't have a pink sweater to throw over her, like he'd done with Luna. Shin frowned. "You sure? Because I know places that are warmer than Central Park. You look kind of cold to me."

Jessica bit her lips. The kitten mewed again, padding up to the man, then nuzzling up against his legs, obviously seeking its own warmth.
Frankly speaking, she did not know how to respond. She was certainly cold. But she couldn't impose on this man. He probably had better things to do, and she was already relieved that he didn't seem to want to do anything bad to her... for now. She also needed to return to the home, or she'd be missed... but right now, she was reluctant to return. It wasn't much warmer there, in any sense of the word.

Hrm...
"Okay. Well, if you ever need help, there's this place--" He stopped. Was it weird to try and help people in the park when they said they were fine? Was it weirder to try and offer them warm locations and connections to the mansion when he hardly knew whether they were mutant, or anti-mutant and human? Was it generally strange for an older man to be talking to a younger girl in the park for no reason.
All answers were probably yes. He hoped nobody thought he was up to something. He really wasn't. He cast a glance over his shoulder, then bowed his head with a sigh. "I should go..."
He had better things to do than worry about whether or not he looked like a jerk in Central Park... like worrying whether or not he looked like a jerk to Kasumi, or his closest friends...

What had he been about to say? A place that could help her? ...It was not important. She needed to get back.
Jessica pushed herself up, a little unsteadily. The wind blew gently, pulling her hair over her eyes; she shivered a little as she raised a hand to brush the hair back. Her eyes remained downcast.
"I'm sorry for disturbing you, sir." She turned to go, putting her arms about her as she did so. It was going to be another cold walk back.

With a nod, Shin turned his back on the girl. "No trouble. Later." Really, helping a random person by not helping them was no trouble at all... didn't he used to be good at this 'greeting' thing? What was up?
Shin wandered off, letting the thoughts whirl around inside him. Some thinking needed to be done, yes...
