The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

To say Ghost was confused would be an over simplification. First she thought Garrett was running away, then it seemed he was running toward her. She didn't quite understand these things, but she knew she couldn't just sit at home doing nothing waiting for Garrett to get off of work. The seconds ticked by like refrigerated molasses.
She took the bus into town, her excitement level simmering in her stomach. She'd explored nearly every touristy place now excluding Coney Island and the Statue of Liberty. She couldn't help the Statue bit - Lady Liberty apparently took a swim for a while and the whole area had been blocked for some time. Coney Island? Well, Ghost thought maybe a place with that many blinking lights needed to be a shared experience. Since her funds were - well, non-existent - Ghost was left with one option: the park.
She had a lot to think over and there was a lot of path to walk. She felt safe enough with the large lunch crowd and the broad day light. A girl alone could really think at a place like this. There was a little place in her stomach that squeezed tight at the thought that Garrett was only a few blocks away from Central Park. She'd promised not to bother him... yet and so she wandered.
Eventually, Ghost grew tired of avoiding collisions with the avid bicyclists and joggers. It seemed that more than just Ghost came here to think. If she was going to stay in one peace, she needed to get off the path or start paying attention. Since she couldn't seem to hold onto her surroundings, she opted for finding a place to sit.
Squeals of joy caught her attention as she followed the path under a bridge and around a corner. Kids. Ghost liked kids. She found herself gravitating toward the happy sounds unconsciously. Her cheeks were ruddy from walking, but also because of a new thought: these kids all had parents. Parents were two people in love. She squirmed. She'd never thought of having a child before in her life. She'd never thought of herself as more than a child until recently. Always an onee-san, older sister, and nothing else.
Ghost stood shyly at the edge of the play area. Moms and their buggies were crowded along the benches, chatting with one another while keeping one eye on their own personal bundle of energy. Maya respected these ladies. Mothers here with their daughters and sons. She felt a pang of ... jealousy? A little sadness that tempered her own budding joy.

There was something about children that had always made Kealey feel a little bit better about the future of the planet. From her days at the convent, to the job she'd taken as an assistant in the Catholic school in Belfast, children had always allowed her a level of relaxation second only to that which prayer brought on.
It was joy. Being around children was like being bathed in a constant bath of joy. Kind of like a warm tub of water topped off with thick foamy bubbles, it was warm and cozy, and it was one of those times that Kealey could think and sort out her own feelings.
Playgrounds were a good place to find a large group of children and at her age Kealey managed to blend in well enough with the young mothers that nobody mistook her for something sinister. In fact, Kealey took pride in rooting out those who were there with a dark purpose. Anyone who looked at the scenes that played out on a playground and felt arousal was quickly met with a scathing look. That along with the increased feeling of guilt and self disgust that Kealey increased in them was usually enough to send them packing. No matter what the world was turning into, children deserved their joy and innocence as long as they could keep it.
There were lots of mom's in the park today. It was cooler than it had been recently and it had drawn people out of their comfortable air conditioning. Kealey almost chuckled at the thought of her dingy apartment cooled only by a oscillating fan...one didn't make a great deal of money as a library assistant and New York was an expensive city to live in.
That's why she was in Central Park, of all the places in New York it was here that Kealey found it the easiest to find happy people, people who didn't drag her mood down. Casting a look around, her eyes landed on a mother sitting on a bench and reading a book with a baby stroller next to her. She was so happy and relaxed, and the love she had for her baby enveloped them both in a warm blanket. The baby was happy too, content to snooze in the early afternoon sunlight.
There was a little boy standing at the top of the slide, he was full of pride at the fact that he felt no fear at such an enormous height. Kealey smiled and her eyes dropped to someone else...a young woman who was watching. The young woman's feelings were interesting to say the least. She was jealous...but happy...apprehensive...but joyous. Utter confusion if Kealey had ever seen it before. The warm glow of love wasn't present in this woman, but deep affection was.
It had been a while since Kealey had spoken to someone on impuse, and before she really even knew what she was doing, she found herself propelled towards the other young woman, coming up beside her and looking out over the playground scene.
"Isn't it amazing how happy they can all be at once?" she said, her Irish lilt rolling off her tongue with the words, "It always makes me wonder when I changed..." it was a bit of a lie...Kealey knew when her innocence had been lost, but she had to start the conversation somewhere. She'd pray forgiveness for the little white lie later.
"Isn't it amazing how happy they can all be at once?" a sweet Irish tinged voice distracted Ghost from her thoughts. "It always makes me wonder when I changed..." Ghost couldn't help but nod along with her comment. When had they become adults? For a moment she just turned back towards the children, listening to the crazy plots they dreamed up for each other. I'm the Princess and you come save me. or Pretend you're a mutant and I'm a mutant - we're running away. It was all so - fun. and innocent. She missed it in a way. She was sad that Evan never had the chance.
"Ah- forgive me!" Ghost practically jumped. "Where are my manners? My name is... Maya." She just didn't feel like explaining the Ghost bit today. Her own slight accent was apparent in her S's and R's, but this was New York, who didn't have an accent? Maya offered her hand, noticing the fashionable blonde didn't have the same hawkish watchfulness as the mothers. "Ah - are you watching someone?" She worried that she was distracting this young woman from her charge. Really, she hadn't meant to gape at the kids and she certainly meant no ill-will if this woman was trying to chase her off.

The girl had looked over when Kealey approached and spoke, most people did that. While Kealey had never been exceptionally interested in the attentions of men, her accent had always been something of an attractant. It made her smile, she was proud of her heritage.
The other girl was still lost in her thoughts and Kealey could feel the nostalgia now, the joy, and she grinned even wider. This is why she came here, it was so nice just to relax sometimes. She turned her head back and watched the kids for a few moments, completely absorbed in the commotion they were creating over at the playground, it really was almost magical.
The other girl, Kealey decided girl was probably a poor term, the young woman couldn't have been much younger than she was herself, spoke and Kealey jumped slightly in surprise at the voice after the previous laspe in conversation.
"Mia." Kealey said, turning more fully towards the other woman so they could speak, "I'm Kealey Quinn." she finished, reaching out to return the shake of the hand. The woman went on to speak and Kealey blushed slightly, shaking her head . "No...none of them are mine."
Kealey looked at the woman, meeting her measure, friendliness, the confusion, affection, many different emotions radiated from the young woman, but then again they did from most people at any given time as well.
"I'm just watching. Reminiscing about my sister and I. I'd come to take a walk in the park and heard them playing."
Maya wasn't quite sure what to make of the woman who'd joined her. She didn't seem to be a creep, in fact, quite the opposite. So Maya wrestled with ideas of keigo and sempai, while they meant nothing here in America, there was a distinct pecking order in Japan. Maya was pretty sure this stylish and kind girl was older and wiser than herself and that required a certain amount of respect. It was hard to tell why you'd like or respect someone right off the bat, but Maya just felt a certain... peace radiating from Kealey. You couldn't not like that especially when that was what she'd set out to find from the beginning.
Maya couldn't help but laugh a little when they both seemed to jump at her words. It was just so nice to let your mind go elsewhere that they seemed to be in a similar place. In fact, Ghost was a little surprised to hear that this Kealey Quinn woman was just watching. Not only was she just watching, but they seemed to be there for similar reasons.
"Ahhh. A sister, how nice that would be." Maya turned back to watch the kids again with a small smile on her face. She flipped through her emotions like one would flip through note cards: hurt, loneliness, sadness, anger, resentfulness and finally hope. Her smile never wavered as if she'd decided to hope for the best long ago. Maya's sister was gone, but that didn't mean there weren't still sisters and mothers out there. She wanted to help in any way she could. If that meant using her abilities or becoming a teacher or even becoming a trash collector, she'd do it.
Usually Maya was perfectly fine with silence, but she didn't like to dwell on things that were long past so she found herself trying to strike up a conversation. "Do you... live around here, Ms. Quinn?" Maya assumed she'd been supplied with a last name so that she could use it.

This girl was a veritable hotbed of emotion, and Kealey smiled and cocked an eyebrow at the respect she felt filtering through towards herself. Kealey was tempted to ask what she'd done so quickly to earn herself the other woman's respect.
A sister, Kealey felt her own feelings keenly then, the longing and pain that her sister's image always brought up. "I lost mine a long time ago." she said softly, her eyes drifting back to the kids as the other woman's did the same. "It really was a wonderful thing though."
The kids were still playing on the playground equipment, and Kealey watched them, though she was really delving deeper into the feelings of the woman next to her. Kealey had struggled with herself at times over whether or not this was a proper thing to do, or if it was too much like eavesdropping for her to be comfortable with. She never really did anything with the information she gleaned, unless it was something that would help someone, so Kealey looked.
There were so many emotions present in this one young woman, that Kealey half-wondered what on Earth could be producing this effect and how the woman wasn't an absolute bundle of nerves, just being around her was starting to make Kealey fidgety.
More conversation, all the emotions had made Kealey jumpy though, so it took her a moment to respond to the other woman and the question that she asked, "Uh...yeah....a little place. This is an expensive city, and I'm just a librarian. I also live simply....always have." yeah....as simple as possible....vow of poverty simple. The habits one learned as a novice in a convent didn't die easily.
"What about you Mya...do you live nearby? Or frequent the park?"
"I lost mine a long time ago... It really was a wonderful thing though."
Maya squirmed internally - it was like this lady had a mirror that looked right into her past or something. She tried not to give Kealey the eye, but she couldn't help but wonder if she was a mind reader. Was she just being paranoid? It was possible that Kealey also had lost a sister. It wasn't entirely unheard of. If asked, this was probably the only point at which Maya would lie. It was the only lie she'd practiced and the only lie she felt comfortable telling. It was her family's secret.
Maya was generally jumpy around strangers, but Kealey didn't scare her like most. She was a bit wary of her special insight, but that honestly could be all coincidence, right?
"Uh...yeah....a little place. This is an expensive city, and I'm just a librarian. I also live simply....always have."
"A librarian? Ii, ne? That sounds like a great job." Maya smiled. She wished she could find a job. She really needed something to do. "Living simply is nothing to be ashamed of. At least you're living, right?" She smiled again. Her own room was particularly sparse.
Kealey asked where she lived and Maya was glad that she'd moved on to a less sensitive subject. "I live at a school, actually. Just kind of getting on my feet, I suppose." Maya wondered how long she'd live there. If she found a way to make money she wouldn't have to be a burden. It wasn't like she was school age anymore. She'd wanted to make it to college. She made a mental note to ask Neena about online enrollment when she got back today.

Ah...there was the suspicion. Kealey wondered what it was that had actually triggered the feeling. Sometimes Kealey was weak and actually wished that she could read more than peoples' emotions. It wasn't always enough just to know how they were feeling, if she could just know what they were thinking every once and a while....greed...that's what it was. Plain and simpl greed. Kealey resisted the urge to cross herself and say a Hail Mary and she looked at the other woman.
Kealey mentioned her job and some of the suspicion faded to be replaced by longing and a few thoughts of a covetous nature. Kealey grinned, it was hard to believe tha someone would be jealous of her job in a library...but maybe it was just the fact that she had a job. A few moments later, the woman suggested just that when she mentioned that she lived at a school....a school? Kealey's attention perked up and she turned her head towards the woman.
"A school? Are you in college then?" Kealey couldn't help but ask, the nuns had always tried so hard to get her to continue her education. If there was somewhere in the area that could provide support, it might be a good place for her.
"I don't mean to be nosy...I only ask because I've been interested in taking a few classes lately."
"Not at all," Maya shook her head to let Kealey know she wasn't offended by her questions. "The school typically teaches grade school children. So we're out of luck as far as classes go." Maya smiled a bit ruefully and shrugged. She'd wanted to start in on some classes too. Unfortunately the mansion wasn't as accommodating for higher education. She'd heard that the longer you put off college, the harder it was to go.... something like that.
Maya didn't necessarily want to expose the mansion either... hence the care in her words. She did wonder how the woman would react knowing that she lived at a school for mutants. Maybe mentioning the school would ferret out the truth behind Ms. Quinn's uncanny ability to know things. She seemed nice enough, but then again Maya's trusting nature had gotten her in trouble before. Well, it had also won her some friends too. In the end, there was only one way to know: take a risk and just say it.
"Unless ...if you were maybe looking for some special kind of instruction. The school where I stay is a boarding school for the gifted who are looking to learn to control their powers in a safe environment." Maya folded her arms carefully and deliberately across her stomach and watched the children play. She'd let Kealey decide how she wanted to proceed from there, but she was proud of the school and its purpose. She would defend it because it was the only thing she had. It was the only purpose that she felt that she could actually believe in anymore.

The other woman wasn't offended, and Kealey was relieved. Causing offense was something that had shaken her to her very core since the time she was a little girl in Ireland. Her parents had taught her that respect and propriety were the core values of life and she had taken those beliefs almost as gospel her whole life.
The woman was living at a school full of primary school children? That was interesting, the woman wasn't a teacher and was interested in taking college courses. Exactly what kind of school was it? Kealey could feel the indecision in the woman and she became even more intrigued. The urge to use her power to increase the woman's desire to say more was almost overwhelming, and so was Kealey's curiosity, but her guilt at the thought of using her power in that way was even more overwhelming and she whispered a silent prayer for peace of mind in the face of temptation.
Kealey smiled a moment later when the woman decided to expound upon the school where she lived. The woman had made the decision completely on her own, and as she spoke, Kealey's own surprise was enough that she almost didn't feel the trepidation and concern from the woman at what she'd shared.
Kealey smiled again, having been raised in a situation where everyone around her saw her mutation as a gift from god had done wonders for her confidence in it and her comfort with herself. "I'm a mutant as well." she said, guilessly, "And I can always use help learning to control my powers."
Kealey looked over at a pregnant mother sitting against a tree, watching her other child playing, "You see...that woman is ecstatic, but at the same time, she's worried about something, and she's dreading something else." Kealey turned her attention to the little boy from before, the little boy who'd been so proud, "I don't know a single word to describe this emotion, but that little boy's pride has been hurt. And you...." Kealey said, turning to look the other woman full on in the eye, "You're feeling so many different things right now that I don't have a clue what you're going through. I will tell you though, it's what drew me over to you. I feel people's emotions...all of them...if they're close enough. I tell you, it can be overwhelming."
At first, Maya followed Kealey's comments with intense interest. It was always so amazing how abilities worked and how each was unique. It began to dawn on Maya how she must feel to the young woman even before Kealey pointed it out. Maya's face glowed pinker and pinker until it reached a fully flushed beet red when Kealey fully explained the reason for her approach. Well, the positive side was that Ghost wasn't crazy. She'd realized at least on some level that Kealey was special, but she'd had it mostly wrong.
She ducked her head and mumbled. "...came here to work some things out..." The sudden rush of blood to her head was making her feel a bit ill. She couldn't help but be embarrassed. She'd been feeling whatever she wanted to feel without hesitation, not knowing that anyone was tapping in on that... or that any one even could. In the end it was like realizing you had put on your underwear on the outside of your pants.
She swallowed and tried to shake her embarrassment, she wasn't meaning to be rude. She became keenly aware of her emotions now that she knew that they were out in the open between the two. "I had no idea abilities like yours existed... I actually thought..." A fresh blush blossomed across her cheeks. "Everything you said... Our situations seem rather similar so I thought maybe... you might be a mind reader." Maya fumbled with her hands in her skirt, though she seemed to gain confidence the longer she spoke. It was best not to worry about what Kealey might feel from her and just feel what she felt.
"I'm obviously no mind reader. I'm an elemental." Maya nodded her head once, a simple semi-formality now that they were introducing their real selves. "And even though you have a place to stay, I'm sure the school would always welcome another student. They've been nothing but kind to me as of yet. I would love to introduce you to the teachers some time if you'd like."

The woman was a embarrassed, and Kealey couldn't help but think that was surprising. Alot of people felt violated when Kealey revealed what it was her powers allowed her to do. Nobody ever seemed to realize how private they thought their emotions were until someone else was privy to them.
The other woman only waited a moment before sharing the reasoning behind her embarrassment and Kealey shook her head slowly, a somewhat grave look on her face. "You have no idea how many times I've wished that I was a mind reader." she said, her eyes moving back to the kids on the playground, "I can only tell what someone is feeling...I don't have a clue why they feel that way...and like I said...I feel everyone."
The woman was good-natured, Kealey could tell by the way her emotions swirled from compassion to embarrassment, from indecision to decision. Nobody with that many questions about their own emotions could have been anything else. Then the woman was talking more about the school and Kealey looked at her for a long moment, searching the other woman's eyes. Kealey was always weary of trusting someone so completely so soon. She knew she was unwise of the ways of the world in many ways, and while knowing what someone was thinking helped....
"I'm not sure." Kealey said, her forehead wrinkling in concentration. "The idea is amazingly tempting...but it's so hard to trust people these days...how does this place survive with so many....talented people in one place?"
Maya let Kealey search her face and her heart. When it came to the school, her emotions and her mind were quite clear: it was a good place for her. They had sheltered her and fed her and clothed her in her ime of need with little to no question and never a mention of repayment. Maya and Kealey tested each other for a long silent moment before Kealey's face screwed up in concentration and finally she admitted her own fears. Ghost wondered if she ever had problems figuring out which emotions were hers if she always swam in a sea of feelings.
Ghost laughed softly. "You know, I have no idea." Slowly she was able to let go of the tenseness that had been gathering between her shoulder blades. Ghost thoughtfully told the entire truth, anything less would have made her feel guilty and given her away. "It's not too far, just a taxi-ride from the city, but it is tucked away keenly. I heard it was raided once, but that was before I came along.... err - not that I've done much to protect it so far. Only helped rebuild the pieces." She laughed softly again.
"Actually, it's nice to get to know someone outside the school. There are a few older kids, but mostly it's just school age children." Ghost shrugged. She'd grown to love the rascals she'd met so far even if they had painted a mustache on her while she was sleeping once. And actually most of the older kids she'd met were boys so it was nice to meet a girl for once, get a little estrogen time in between all those hormone-driven guys. She smiled secretly nursing her warm thoughts about a certain other person she'd met that was her own age.

The other woman had warm feelings towards the school, and Kealey smiled, then ran a hand through her hair, grimacing at the small tangles the breeze had caused. Curiosity now infused the other woman's thoughts and Calley tried to figure out what it was that the girl was curious about that she hadn't already asked.
"Just a taxi ride from the city eh?" Kealey said, her head tilted to one side as she thought about the possibilities, at least tried to think about them as the emotions of the people in the park continued to rain down on her consciousness. It was interesting to think that there was somewhere that so many people like her lived. There were children there and Kealey wondered if there were opportunities to work with them.
The school had been raided, Kealey's eyebrows arched in surprise at the thought, "Someone raided a school full of children? Who would do a thing like that?" The woman seemed to shake off the attack though and Kealey wondered just how bad things had been for mutants in new york. Kealey had known it had been bad, that's why she'd come to the states in the first place...but attacking schools full of kids?
A couple of new emotions filtered out of Mya and into Kealey and she looked back at the other woman again. She was feeling warm and fuzzy, Kealey smiled, while she'd never felt the warm glow of new love herself, she'd felt it enough times from other people to know that it was something timid and frightening but beautiful at the same time. The other feeling was a genuine liking, she smiled, it was nice to finally have a friend in New York.
"I'd love to see your school some time. I have quite a bit of experience working in schools...and I've been looking for a job. We should exchange contact information so I can set something up."
Maya was distracted from her warm and fuzzies when she noticed Kealey's reaction at the news of a raid, "They raided a school full of children." Maya echoed in confirmation. She was curious then. Kealey had a fresh accent like she'd just fallen off the turnip truck... or airplane. It seemed like she didn't know. If she hadn't been here during all the craziness and she didn't know... How much did the outside world know about what happened in America during the Registration?
"Who would do a thing like that?"
Maya exhaled a short clipped breath. So Kealey really didn't know. "Speaking of the school raid, all I know is hearsay." For some reason Kealey was a very easy person to talk to. Though Maya withdrew a bit, she decided to continue. Her words became more and more emotionally detached: just the facts. "I don't know how much you know about these things so forgive me if I repeat what is already common knowledge. I am not sure how much the outside world knows... I know that I had no idea."
She swallowed and then sighed expelling her tension. She would keep it to just the facts to avoid opening fresh wounds. It was easier to detach the events when surrounded by the happy cries of children. The serene light that filtered through the leaves above the two women made such fantastical horrors as imprisonment, starvation, and worse all seem like a bad dream. Maya's eyes followed the movement and colors, but didn't process what she was currently seeing as she began to report what she knew to the other young woman.
"The police were tipped off. It was illegal for a mutant to exist unregistered, let alone a school full. Some kind of automaton was used to capture students and teachers alike. All were forced to register, the most... talented were placed into a state detention center."
She hesitated. Just the facts.
"Among the free mutants, a resistance was formed. They forcibly broke into the camp and freed us. Three weeks and some court cases later, suddenly we're allowed to exist again."
She nodded and mentally reviewed what she'd said for errors or the need for more explanation. It was rather bare bones, but she'd tried to keep to the sterile truth. Anything more would get into personal experience which was different for all parties involved.
She didn't want to feel anything about the camps and she certainly didn't want to pass any of that feeling on. Maya changed the subject swiftly back to more cheerful terms. "I would absolutely love for you to visit." She fished for her bus pass. She'd torn off the letterhead of the welcome packet that Neena had supplied for her and taped it to her pass just in case of emergencies. It had most of the school's information printed on it and Maya offered it politely to Kealey so that she could copy the office number and address. "I don't have a phone, but if you'd like to reach me I'm sure that you could leave a message with the office."
