It seemed like forever since Mittens breathed the free air of New York city. The larged handed criminal was stalking through an abandoned warehouse, eyeing the minimal number of his men that he had left. He was in prison for too long, his men didn’t stay loyal. Because of that, he was forced to work with only a handful (snerk) of men who were barely hanging onto their loyalty by the thinnest of threads. Quickly they were growing antsy, wanting some action, some pay off! Well, Mittens was going to reward them with that tenfold.
But first, everyone needed coffee and doughnuts.
Stepping across the street, the growling man with the huge hands sauntered to the corner bakery. The smell of sweets and coffee in the air drew his attention. Having just gotten out of prison, he was looking forward to this day, ready for the perks that only freedom could offer. Besides….he could use a little “warm up” before he got down to the REAL business…
Mittens saw that people were already crowded around the counter. He smirked as he cracked his very large knuckles and stormed into the bakery. Robbery and doughnuts…it was one of the best ways to start the day!

Jorge grumbled. He didn’t want to be at his desk today but, sadly, he had let far too much paperwork pile up on his desk. Because it, he was going to have to spend the day making sure that all his “I’s” were dotted and all his “T’s” were crossed. Formalities, that was all they were. But it was such that the small mistake could set a perp off from a lifetime in jail. Jorge should have known better but with how busy the streets had been these days, there was little free time to tackle the tomes of paper her needed to.
But, he was dedicated today. He didn’t like it, he hated it actually, but he would get it done. That was his mission.
At least it was until his phone rang. Jorge blinked as he picked up his phone’s receiver and placed it to his ear. He idly listened to the dispatcher as he began the eternal search for his pen but had to pause the second he heard one name…”Mittens”. How could that man be free already? He growled since what he heard only proved that the man had no intention of staying on the right side of the law.
Someone called in a robbery in progress. There was a man…a man with huge hands.
Jorge narrowed his eyes. He was going to handle this one personally. Leaving his mountain of paperwork for later on, Jorge grabbed his coat from the back of his chair, checked his badge, gun, and snagged up his car keys. It was time to get down to business….
The first indication that Jude's day was about to go downhill was the sound. One part thick, one part pop. Those were very big hands that man was sporting. Big and meaty. Jude would hate to knit mittens for that fella.
Mittens walked right past the line of patrons and put his fists through the front counter.
Everyone in the store took a collective gasp before people started screaming and shoving. The poor cashier started crying when Mittens picked him up by the shoulders and demanded 3 dozen doughnuts.
Jude swam up the stream of people to get closer. If you fight fire with fire, then his mutation was the perfect weapon here.
By the time Jude was tapping Mittens on the shoulder, Mittens had set the cashier down and was picking through the destroyed register for cash. Since it was still early and most people paid by credit card, pickings were slim.
"And a coffee." He added to his order, ignoring the light tap Jude had given him.
Well. His hands weren't attractive being so huge and all, but Jude had taken on worse physical traits and lived to tell the tale. He let his power loose and it rushed out with what Jude could only interpret as glee. When it came back Jude's hands swelled up like watermelons.
Sirens sounded in the distance. Backup. All Jude had to do was stall the guy.
This time when he tapped Mittens on the shoulder, the man couldn't ignore him. By the sound of it, Jude nearly broke the man's shoulder. (He wasn't used to the new weight and momentum these things had.) "Excuse me, I don't sink zat belongs to you." They weren't too dissimilar, Jude noticed. They both had dark hair and light skin. Besides their large hands they each had a rather medium build. They could have been brothers.

CRASH!!!!
A half conscious person was slumped out of a broken window, shards of glass everywhere, while Mittens took the opportunity to exit through the front door, his cases of doughnuts underneath his arm. Heavy breathes wheezed out of his lungs as he staggered out, growling a little and struggling to keep himself on his two feet. He really didn’t know what happened back there and felt just a tiny bit dazed.
Did he really see that? Was that guy in there…did he have…hands like him? Who would have thought it?! So much for individuality anymore.
Shaking his head, Mittens eyed the dazed person that dared to attack him and spat contemptuously on the ground nearest his head. There was only one person in this city like him and he was going to keep it that way.
Sadly, he couldn’t finish the job. The piercing sounds of sirens and the flash of red and blue lights down the street echoed in his ears. He didn’t have the strength or manpower to defend himself just yet. He needed to regroup. Another growl towards the imposter and Mittens dashed away.

Jorge tore through the streets has fast as he could. The man had business with Mittens, especially since the last time that they tangled, Jorge nearly lost both his AND Gemma’s life because the mutant was out to settle a score. He was not going to allow a dangerous mutant like that to remain on the streets long. This was especially true since it seemed that Mittens was not going to take advantage of the parole that he was out on.
Some bad eggs just stayed that way, it seemed.
Pulling up the doughnut shop that he was directed too, Jorge saw the obvious signs of battle. Glass was broken, people were mulling around, scared of an eventual return, it looked like a small tornado had come through the pastry shop. Thankfully people looked almost relieved as soon as they saw the calming red and blue lights, along with the piercing sound of the siren.
Jorge pulled to a stop against the curb, hopped out, gun in hand and charged for the store. As he drew closer, he paused when he noted that someone was already there, someone with extremely large hands.
Instantly he snapped into action as he raised the gun and kept the slumped figure straight in his sights.
“Mittens! Hands up! NOW!” he barked as he edged closer but tried to keep a safe distance. He was not letting that man get away…
A few punches in, Jude recognized a fatal flaw in his plan: big hands happened to be really, really, REALLY heavy. The Frenchman wasn't exactly a strong man. He tried for a grapple and got clocked across the face for his trouble. Jude twisted with the punch and SLAMMED right into a window. The spiderweb cracks seemed to be Mittens' inspiration because he grabbed Jude by the collar and slammed him back into the glass a couple more times just for good measure.
Whatever Mittens did after that was a bit of a (literal) blur. Jude didn't hear anyone dying —he was pretty sure he would have been able to muster up the strength to do something about that— so he didn't bother trying to wipe the blood out of his eyes.
The scalp cuts were shallow, at least they didn't hurt much, but they were starting to gush like proper head wounds. Despite that it was his mouth that had taken the most hits. Jude tried to fumble at his teeth to make sure none of the loose ones decided to jump ship, but his hands were just so heavy.
> “Mittens! Hands up! NOW!”
"Mare mou kimming me?" Probably came out more like guttural protests than actual words and the pain made his voice deep. "He esh gedding away." Jude took the effort to try to point out the real bad guy's direction.

It was difficult to believe that Jorge was staring at someone other than Mittens. The man had huge hands, the same hair, the same skin tone, so it had to be him, right? After all, as the old adage went, if it walked like a duck, quacked like a duck, then it was a duck. The logic was all there so Jorge didn’t shift his gun sight in the slightest as he began the approach. Maybe some other mutant had played hero and taken Mittens out before he got there?
If that was the case, he would have to make sure he found this person and thanked them himself.
He moved closer, gun trained expertly. He knew that if Mittens had made a single move that he could easily squeeze off a pair of shots directly into the soft flesh of the man’s chest. It was a last resort that he didn’t really like going into, but he would do it if it meant protecting himself from Mitten’s wrath. After all, he doubted that the last thing Mittens wanted to see was him!
Finger arched over the trigger, he waited for an excuse to squeeze it as he found himself traveling closer and closer, ready to bark out another order.
>> "Mare mou kimming me?”
The voice was struggling and low, more like gibberish if anything. Maybe it was some cope out please from Mittens to try and say he was really the victim. As if Jorge was going to believe that.
“I don’t want to hear your stories, Mittens,” the detective growled. “Get up! Now!”
>> “He esh gedding away."
Jorge blinked. He did hear that correctly, right? Who was Mittens talking about? Who was getting away? If he thought he was getting away from this little robbery, the mutant definitely had another thing coming! But, creeping closer, Jorge had to pause. Suddenly…this person was not looking so much like the mutant that had terrorized both Gemma and himself on that cruise of the harbor.
Eyes narrowed, the detective took the chance to creep closer and suddenly lowered his arms. It wasn’t Mittens! But…but the hands…
“Mittens? Who are you?” he asked cautiously, just on the off chance that Mittens was actually in disguise. “How do you have hands like that? Who got away?”
Man, this guy was pushy! But, he did have the gun. Self-preservation dictated that Jude do as the man with the gun wanted. So he worked to extricate himself from the glass and get up onto his feet. He put his hand through the wall when he tried to brace himself against it and then bobbled with the bricks trying to smush them back in place.
Mr. Cop must have noticed that Jude hadn't been trying to destroy anything that he had demolished in the last five seconds because this time when he addressed Jude as Mittens, he sounded unsure.
The ability copier shook his head. "mmm I trimed to keep hem 'ere." His jaw wasn't broken. He was just being a pansy about it. In order to save what little dignity he had left, Jude made himself leave it alone and stand tall.
> “How do you have hands like that? Who got away?”
Really? This guy was a detective? Jude threw up his hands in frustration and his thumb jabbed a hole in the wooden framing around the window. Oops.
"Mimmens!" He wished he had ice for his hurting face. Jude gestured to a doughnut on the ground and then another. There was no breadcrumb trail to follow, but those doughnuts were dropped either in fear of a fleeing Mittens or dropped by the man himself. "Grammed doumuts amd ramed away." He pointed again toward the direction he was pretty sure the real bad guy had gone. "Zat way." So he had better run off and go get him or else Jude's bumps and bruises would all be in vain.
Of course, the details were a bit fuzzy... maybe someone else had been around? Jude let his arms sag with the weight of his hands. How did Mittens live like this?

Jorge arched a brow, looking at the bakery all around him. So, apparently this guy was just trying to be a good Samaritan and got the stuffing knocked out of him. Jorge wasn’t surprised by that, since it seemed indeed that the young man was in over his head. Then again, one glace at the overly large hands and he figured that maybe the guy thought he could do some good. After all, maybe it was just a coincidence that this guy happened to have the same mutation.
Then again…really…what were the odds?

Doughnuts? Jorge couldn’t really place why Mittens would just steal doughnuts? Was the guy really that out of touch with what he was and could do? Maybe he was desperate and this seemed like the closest and easiest mark that he could hit. It seemed like a rather foolish thing to do, especially since he was just barely out of the prison, but far be it from Jorge to understand the mind of a criminal.
He turned and noted that on the floor, there seemed to be a trail of doughnuts that led away from the store. Wherever Mittens was going, it apparently was a destination he needed to get to in a hurry…
>> "Zat way."
Jorge nodded and glanced back to the man with the overly large hands. He felt a pang of sympathy since it looked as if the guy was struggling with trying to maintain them. To be honest, Jorge wondered half the time how Mitten’s himself did it. It really didn’t seem like the most gentle of powers to have to deal with. After all, there were certain…everyday things…that needed to be done that having overly large hands would seem like a burden.
Quickly he shook the thoughts away. Already he could hear the sounds of sirens in the distance, further back up from other officers who would handle the crime scene and take statements and questions. He turned back to the young man.
“You, stay here,” he explained. “And stay in plain sight. You look a lot like Mittens so they may draw their guns on you. One look at your face, though, should persuade them not to. I,” he said as he turned to the open door of the bakery, “have to chase this guy down.”
Without another word, Jorge bolted out the door, calming people as best he could on the way out, and followed the trail of doughnuts.
((OOC: Ghosty! Feel free to have Jude ignore him and chase after him to offer help, if you like!))
Didn't matter what the cop said after that. "Heck no." Jude turned to skedaddle.
He had done his civic duty. Heck, Jude even stuck around at risk of deportation to tell a cop what had happened. Okay, okay. So he had still been picking himself up off the ground when the guy got here, but he had been helpful, dangit! And now his help was at an end.
Not swerving enough at the last second, Jude did his final amount of damage to the store when a fist widened the exit. The Frenchman hoped they had mutant insurance.
Cop ran after Mittens. Jude was running toward the nearest crowd so he could hopefully find a physical mutation and then get lost. It seemed that Mittens had a similar idea to hide in a crowd because Jude ended up trotting after the cop until they came out in full view of Times Square.
Tourists, cabs, go-getters and Jude. He tried to stuff his hands in his pockets and ended up ripping his pants. So much for blending in. That cop had better continue to chase after the real bad guy. Jude took a sharp right aiming to catch up with someone who looked remarkably like an emu.

Jorge didn’t pause once as he dashed across the street, following the direction that gibberish-speaking man had pointed to, as well as following the fallen doughnuts like breadcrumbs. Mittens wasn’t a very bright man, as a matter of fact, he ranked fairly low on the list of world’s smartest dumbasses. But that only made him all the more dangerous. Jorge knew first hand just how deadly the man could be when he was cornered or set his mind on something. While Jorge didn’t want to be on the receiving end of that again, he couldn’t help it; this was his job.
The only thing that would make this entire matter worse was…
“A crowd,” he grumbled as he eyed the numerous amount of people that were mulling about. Of course Mittens would have to run towards one of the busiest sections in New York, Times Square.
Though Mittens was the type of person to stand out fairly easily, the simple fact that no one was screaming or running for their lives must have meant that he was hiding out rather well. Holstering his gun, since he didn’t need people running in a panic, the detective began to stalk in and out of the crowd, weaving around people in search of Mittens. Doughnuts on the floor seemed to be pointing the way but they were quickly being trampled.
“Come on, come on,” he grumbled to himself. “Where are you?”

Emu mutations weren’t fun. Sidney decided that a long time ago when he found out he could shift into one of those tall, flightless birds that stalked the Australian outback. In a world where people would walk through mirror, summon ice, turn into water, or erase people memories, it was rather sucky that he would get stuck with turning into a bird! It didn’t help, either, that as he grew up, his mutation went into overdrive and started giving him more emu-like features (bill, long neck, big eyes), but at least he was learning to control shifting back into a human form!
That had to be a plus! On top of that, he was finally out of the criminal game! A former member of Mittens’ posse, Sidney was the look out, the wheel man, and sometimes even laundry man (he wasn’t very respected). But, at least since Mittens had been thrown into jail, he was free. Free!
He sighed as he strutted down the street, his neck swaying to the music that poured out of the earbuds in his ears (err, ear holes). Tonight he had a hot date with an orangutan-shifter so he had to pick up his dry cleanin—
“SID!”
He gulped and jumped. Turning around, he spied a angry and familiar face that he really didn’t want to see.
“M-Mittens? I MEAN…boss?”
“Course it’s me, dolt!” He said as he shook his massive fist at him, but thankfully remained perfectly in hiding. “Get over here! I have a cop on my tail! Where’s your car?”
“Umm, errr, I didn’t bring it?” Gulped Sidney as he backed away, not noticing the young man (who also had massive hands) coming up behind him…
The best part about the male emu? Blue neck skin. Talk about not at all looking like Mittens! He could blame the big hands on them wanting to be wings. It fit. Well, it was believable enough, anyway. Jude just had to get close enough to touch the guy. He wasn't about to risk picking up some random power in this crowd.
Jude waded through the people and in this instance, his hands actually helped. They were a little like a cattle guard.
Something spooked ol' BlueNeck, though because the guy stopped, looked around and then suddenly changed directions. Jude ducked. Had the man seen him? The frenchman chanced another conspicuous look and saw Emuman put his hands up and back away.
Really? Out of all the people in New York someone decided to rob the man he was trying to copy?
Jude increased his speed. He increased his speed even more once he saw who BlueNeck was talking to.
"You!" Jude pointed on big, meaty finger at Mittens.
Mittens seemed equally surprised. EmuMan just flat out started running away.
"Hey! There goes my..." "Hey! There goes my..."
They both stopped when they had started in on the same sentence.
"I smashed you to bits once already." Mittens threatened.
Jude was already throwing the first punch of round 2.

Jorge was beyond frustrated now. As he staked through the crowds at Times Square, he was quickly coming up empty. There was absolutely no sign, no fleeting glimpse of the man that he was chasing. The doughnut trail had ended because any that had fallen were now trampled into nothing but crumbs and shadows of their former, pastry, glories. The trail, for lack of a better term, had gone cold. Like Hansel and Gretel, Jorge was lost in the forest (of people) with no idea where to look next.
Jaw clenched, the detective was about to turn back, to make the call that he needed the area to be swept when he caught sight of something odd.
Now, Jorge was used to the sight of mutants. Working for the MRC, he had worked with and caught plenty of mutants that lived in New York. But it seemed that he had yet to meet any of the kind that take after large, flightless birds. It was only with a passing glance that he saw the emu-mutant. As a matter of fact, he probably would have continued looking away if it were not for the fact that after he ran off, Jorge spied two things:
1) The gibberish speaking balling up his massive fists…
And 2) Mittens himself was rearing up to do the same…
“There you are…” he growled as he started to fight against the crowd, moving in and around them as he pulled out his police issue glock. He needed to get there at all costs. Thankfully, the sight of a gun is a wonderful crowd deterrent that caused people around to scream and dash in opposing directions.
The path was clear…
“MITTENS!!”

Mittens was almost free! Almost out of this mess when tat cowardly Sidney had to be scared away because of something. The mutant was more than a little ticked off already so when he saw that the annoying Frenchman from earlier was back he was beyond all matters of reason. What was this guy, some kind of vigilante? Did he really just follow him out here to get even for him robbing a DOUGHTNUT shop? What was this guy’s problem? It was so…childish!
He grumbled, Mitten’s threatened to eradicate him again. But, as the mistake is with all villains when they get talking, is that he didn’t keep a closer eye on the man. It seemed that just as he was rearing back his own fist, the imposter had already thrown the first punch.
The blow was meaty and shook him down to his core. Mittens had never before been struck by a fist like his own. He instantly regretted every doing it to anyone else. Everything vibrated down to his core and Mittens was sure that his very skeleton was going to break apart.
Momentarily weightless, Mitten’s flew back and slammed hard against the wall. He slumped down, dazed for a second as he struggled back onto his feet. Whoever that guy was, he certainly knew how to throw a punch.
Mittens made to grab a nearby fire hydrant to use as a weapon but he was delayed…
>> “MITTENS!!”
A growl, he turned as he recognized that voice. The second he spied Detective Cervantes he knew that he needed to act fast. As quickly as he could he hurled the fire hydrant at the imposter and made to grab him while he was distracted. He would use the Frenchman as a human shield if all went according to plan…
Huh. Jude looked at his fist for the first time with a bit of admiration. Good work, fist. Because all on his own, Jude would never been able to knock anyone back on their derriere.
Oh. But there was no time for such admiration. Jude was in the middle of a fight.
When he re-focused on Mittens, the man was finding his feet again but hunched over something large and metal...
> "MITTENS!!"
Craaaaap! It was the same cop Jude had been trying to lose! Water gushed suddenly in warning and Jude ducked the huge flying metal chunk. He lashed out at Mittens' knees with his big hands and was rewarded with a sick crack. One swear from Mittens and huge hands encircled Jude's neck. Since he wasn't able to holdall his weight comfortably on both legs, Mittens was putting a lot of weight on Jude and the Frenchman was not the most athletic man on the planet.
This was so not his day. Jude gagged immediately with the weight and pressure of the hands around hsi neck.
"Stop or I squish!" Mittens didn't sound like he was having a wonderful day either. Jude was turned around to face the approaching cop before the pressure resumed and black spots wafted across his vision. Water lapped at Jude's shoes as he flailed ineffectively at the man behind him.
Faced with his imminent termination and the ineffectiveness of his current mutation, Jude reached out with his power to find a different one.

Jorge wasn’t fast enough! He had tried to get there as quickly as possible, raising his gun and hoping to scare Mittens away from the scene. But the large fisted man was unfazed by Jorge’s appearance and instead attempted to control of the situation. The firm grip on the other interloper was tight and looked like he could easily pop off his head like a champagne cork if he so much as pleased to do it. No matter how much the man flailed, Jorge knew that he was not going to get away from him anytime soon. Not unless Mittens wanted him gone.
Unless…
“Alright! Alright, Mittens!” Jorge said as she raised his hands, signifying that he was giving up. Leaning down, slowly he dropped his gun to the concrete and stood up. “See? I’ve put the gun down. No please, don’t hurt the man,” he said as he nodded to his victim.
Mittens grinned wide, exhausted, but clearly fueled by the idea of victory. He held the intruder closely, looking at any second like he could snap the man’s neck like a twig.
“Ugh, that’s right! Just you stay there!” Mittens smirked as he backed away, slowly, trying to get closer to the alley so that he could slip away and maybe hijack a car from the other side. “Come any closer and this guy’s dead meat!”
Jorge nodded, taking a casual step forward and noting, with a glance, the large puddle of water that was directly behind Mittens. As the man backed away, he slowly moved into position where he was straddling the large puddle. Thankfully, his hostage was still struggling, his flailing causing Mittens to temporarily take his eyes off of Jorge now and then. The detective waited, watching, glancing between the criminal and the puddle of water.
It was a stupid idea….but it just might work…
“Stay over there, cop!” Mittens said. “As much as I want to kill you right now, it’s going to have to wait! You see, I got plans! BIG plans, an—STOP FLAILING AROUND LIKE THAT!” he growled as he reprimanded the Frenchman.
Seeing his opportunity, Jorge balled up his fist and suddenly twisted his wrist, pumping a punch into the air. At first the gesture seemed rather random, but instantly it became known what his intentions were. Before Mittens could react, the water puddle directly under up sprang to life. The water surged upward, forming something that looked very much like a fist. The watery punch landed fast, hard, and directly into the most sensitive part of the large-handed man’s anatomy.
“EEEEEEIEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!” Mittens squealed as his advertently loosened his grip and began to sink down onto the ground…
Flailing might as well have been his middle name because Jude was a pro. Mittens even complimented him by admitting in a loud voice that Jude needed to stop. Of course, that was only more motivation.
He was a Magikarp with a fantastic splash attack.
Speaking of splash attacks.... Mittens took one between the legs and that had to hurt. The back of Jude's pants caught some cast off like a kick in the pants. A moist, but effective kick in the pants.
Jude went hands-first toward the growing puddle on the ground when he put it together. Mr. Cop Man was l'eau manipulateur, a hydromancer. Any power had to be better than Mittens' mittens. He let his power out of his skin and let it slurp up the waterpower.
The first thing he noticed was the sudden awareness of water. It was one thing to land in it, it was another to feel it moving below him, behind him, under the street... it was distracting, really.
Jude took longer than he should have to move away from the man that was trying to use him as a hostage, but he was stunned. His hands were still huge, but since he transitioned powers, he'd managed to scrape his palms. Those hands were no longer invulnerable. The street hurt him.
Also his pants were wet.
Mittens caught Jude's leg and tried to haul him back.

Mittens was not going to go down easily. Even though Jorge had struck him in what was the most sensitive part of a man’s body, the detective was surprised to see that Mitten’s had recovered enough to make another grab for the young man that had followed him onto the scene. Jorge was going to have to make sure to reprimand the kid later for trying to be a hero; for now, though, he had a certain, large fisted mutant to deal with.
Not wanting to pull his gun for fear of hitting the kid, Jorge instead felt and locked into that puddle of water that he had used to strike Mittens the first time. A twirl of his wrist and arched his fingers so that he could take command of it. Instantly the waters connected with his mind and would bend to his will. Raising his fingers, the water responded in kind by splashing upward like a slithering snake that was coiling upward and preparing to strike. The motion was enough to cause Mittens to gasp, pause, and loosen his grip just a tiny bit on the Frenchman’s leg.
Jorge smirked as he manipulated the watery serpent to shift left and right, dripping water that rejoined its churning body.
“Mittens! You could use a bath!” Jorge shouted.
Another turn of his wrist and suddenly the water serpent threw itself at Mittens. The criminal was just about in mid-scream when the water slammed into his face and quickly coiled around, forming a sphere of fast moving, churning liquid. Mittens gasped but only bubbles flew out of his mouth as his oxygen supply was cut off. Fruitlessly he clawed at the water but he only succeeded in displacing the water a tiny bit.
Jorge tried his best to keep his concentration on the panicking Mittens but he had to make sure the kid was okay. As Mittens attempted to stumble away (only to land hard on his hip), Jorge leaned in close to make sure the kid was okay.
“You alright?” he asked him, still keeping the water up on Mittens until the man was subdued.
