The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Jorge" Lumen tried testing out the name struggling with the J feeling like it came out too much like a G. She'd been working on toning back her accent since coming to NYC. Clients would ask all sorts of annoying questions when they noticed the Irish flare and some weren't too fond of immigrants with the recession these days. She thought that was ridiculous but none the less tested the name out a few more times.
Lumen was sitting at the window table of a coffee shop close to the hotel. It was a nice place, surprisingly laid back for NYC. The tables were small and decorated bohemian style and the lights were low. Lots of fake foliage with little blinking Christmas lights snaked against the walls and the place smelled like cinnamon.
She wasn't much of a coffee drinker so she sat at the table with the newspaper spread out in front of her sipping a hot chocolate. Her long platinum hair was pulled back into a tight braid. She always looked her age with the hair pulled back and came off more professional so she made a point of doing it for every meeting. She was dressed semi-casual in dark grey knit pants, a soft violet top, and opened matching grey sweater. She didnt wear much makeup- only a bit of powder to tone down the glow in her cheeks that was maybe perhaps just a little more than the glow of an average girl.
She was drumming her fingers against the table while scrolling through her phone in the other hand. Every time the little bell chimed as the door opened she looked up. She had no idea what Jorge looked like but apparently her latest consulting company had forwarded her information and ID photo to the office she'd be paired with.
Once Jorge arrived she was expecting him to discuss as much of the case as was permitted but part of her wondered if it might not also be a bit of a hidden interview. She hasn't been contracted yet, this was just a consultation. True- it paid a nice deposit into her savings account (that apartment couldn't come fast enough) but at the end of the day if she wasn't careful the NYPD may never come calling again. She wanted in on this case and she'd already scheduled several meetings this week with parents of MIA kids.
Lumen's cell phone flashed the email from the firm telling her a bit about the Mutant Crimes Division but she'd already read it. Just like she'd already read the article on the paper in front of her about the mutant with apparent telekinesis who robbed a bank up-state. That article- the one she was reading over again now for the 4th time imagining her brother as a bank robber.
She sipped the hot chocolate again checking her watch. She was still early but Lumen always felt like she was running out of time.

Jorge
Detective Jorge Cervantes had gotten extremely interested in the case that was beginning to pile up on his desk. For months now, kids and mutants have been disappearing. It started off small and unnoticeable, after all, people vanish every day and there is nothing special about it. But lately, the disappearances had begun to pile up. Not even in one of the worst cities in the world should this many people disappear all at the same time. The problem was that there was little to no connection between them. Some rich, some poor, the majority younger, it was all just a crap shoot that Jorge was beginning to get suspicious of.
But try as they might, the MRC simply could not get any leads. It was as if these people were just vanishing and simply did not want to be found on their own accord. As if they were willing dodging the spotlight of the investigation. For whatever the reason, Jorge didn’t know.
It was mighty suspicious.
And that was the reason why they were thinking of hiring out to local private agencies. Someone out there had to know something and if they simply did not want to deal with the “Boys in Blue”, then maybe they would want to deal with someone different, but who would still be able to report to the MRC.
That was the only reason that they had contacted Lumen Collins, and the reason why he was headed to a nearby coffee shop, to meet her. She too was investigating. Maybe she had something that the MRC just didn’t see yet.
He’d find out soon enough.
Pulling up to the front of the coffee shop in his black, Chevy Impala, the detective sighed as he killed the ignition, slipped his keys into his coat pocket, and slipped out of the vehicle. He eyed the shop: such bad experiences in coffee shops in his days. He hoped that this would turn out okay.
Adjusting his dark gray suit and coat, the detective stepped across the sidewalk and then slipped in through the front door with an audible CLIIING! of the bell. He arched a brow as he glanced up at the small, dangling bell and smirk. It was a cute touch. But, where was his contact? He surveyed the scene…
Lumen was lost in a memory of her brother when the man stepped in through the door. He wasn't dressed like a cop but Lumen could recognize 'cop swagger' any day of the week. This particular man carried himself with authority. She cleared her throat stood up and took a step toward him.
"Detective Cervantes?" she asked holding out a dainty pale hand to shake as a greeting completely forgetting to keep her accent in check. Sometimes, she thought she was banjaxed. She'd have to spend some serious amount of time watching a little American TV and practising to get it down.
"I'm Lumen." she gave a half smile, purple eyes peering at him curiously. He didn't look like a mutant. But neither did half the mutants she'd ever met- herself included. She wondered. It would make sense if he was to be working in this department. She wondered how the NYC treated mutants and if it was anything like back home. She made a mental note to do some 'investigating' of her own on Mr Jorge Cervantes. "There's a table here." she motioned not leaving much room for idle chit-chat. Lumen was a do-er after all.
She sat herself down and folded the newspaper. She laid her cellphone on the table, got out her note book and pen and unfolded the few pieces of paper she had with information that had been forwarded to her. "Seems like New York is in a desperate state these days." she commented toward the front page of the folded newspaper. "Though, it's comforting to know there's a specialized mutant crime unit."

Jorge
Jorge knew what the woman looked like. He had her information from when they had set up this information but there was a surprising amount of people wandering around the coffee shop. But still, how many of them had platinum blond hair? Then again, this was New York and there were a variety of hair choices and colors that everyone attempted to embody. There was sure to be an extra platinum blonde or two running around. But as he turned, he was suddenly greeted by the sight of a young woman as she stood up from a table and made her way over.
The look on her face was one of cautious guessing.
>> "Detective Cervantes? I'm Lumen."
She guess right.
He smiled gently and nodded his head. “In the flesh,” he said with a gruff cheerfulness. “It’s nice to meet you Ms. Collins.”
She was an interesting woman to say the least. Her hair was a shade of platinum that he had yet to see naturally, but on top of that her eyes had a shade of color that he really didn’t think was natural either. Mutant, maybe? It would make the most sense. Then again, New York. Dye and eye contacts is all it takes to replicate the effect she had going on right now.
But he would check into that later. For now he wanted to get this meeting underway…
>> "There's a table here."
“Thank you,” he said with an appreciative nod. He followed her to the table and once she managed to claim a seat, he grabbed the one that was across from her and proceeded to sit down as well…
>> "Seems like New York is in a desperate state these days…Though, it's comforting to know there's a specialized mutant crime unit."
He smirked.
“We do our best,” he said with a nod. “Not always easy but we do whatever we can and as fairly as possible.”
It was no secret that the NYPD, any police department actually, had problems with mutants. Whether it was because they felt inadequate about having to challenge overly powered criminals or simply did not like having to deal with mutants for personal reasons, Jorge didn’t know. What he did know was that with the MRC around, mutants at least got a fair voice in the justice system.
But, they were not here to talk about the pros and cons of having a mutant police force. Instead he sighed as he looked over at her.
“So, Ms. Collins, I believe we’re here to discuss something specific,” he said as he eyed her closely. “I take it that you’ve heard about the disappearances going on in town?”
Ah, Lumen was liking Jorge already. A man who got down to business and wasn't hard on the eyes either. She gave a curt nod. "My employer forwarded me as much of the public information as possible, I'd already been following the news reports but I know you're trying to stagger the information as it comes out to the press so I've been reading between the lines." She reached down into the shoulder bag on her right pulling out the rest of the documents and newspaper clippings and placing them on the table. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She could feel a headache coming.
"There's been many well documented cases around the globe of young MIA mutants..." the many excuses the cops had given her family about her brother's disappearance rolled through her memory. "..but none of them have been happening in such a fast past manner of time." she pulled out a chart she'd created knowing the detective already had access to the same information but it was good to show him she was able to figure out these things too. Without being on the other side of the cop car either.
"Last month alone the numbers seem to have peeked, we're looking at teens and kids." she pointed. "I know there's a mutant school here, has anyone checked into the possibility of some sort of recruitment going on there?" she asked "Their numbers seem to have been increasing lately too - quite exponentially since the mutant registration camps a few years ago." Lumen had followed the news on that in much terror.
"...anyway... that's just one of the many avenues I'd like to explore that are easier done by a PI than a cop. When a cop shows up many teens get defensive especially if they've had a... sorted... past." she explained. "I can get into places, legally, that you can't without a warrant as well. You'll see I've got an excellent track record for closed cases and sticking by the book. Of the police cases I've been involved with I've had a success rate of 89% with about 96% of evidence I've provided going to trial and staying legitimate. I'm very thorough."
She leaned back in her chair. Lumen wasn't bragging, she was matter o fact about these things. "Of course, Im much interested in the recent leads you may be following, whatever you're at leave to discuss." she picked up the cup and sipped the last of her hot chocolate and looked up at him over the feathery eye lashes.

He nodded. It was all information that the MRC already knew, that they had begun to follow up on. The city was being plagued with missing persons and the police were doing everything that they could to handle it. They were trying their best to prevent a mass hysteria of people screaming and clawing at anyone on the streets to tell them where their missing loved ones were, but it was hard to do. People obviously do not like it when their loved ones go missing.
It was hard to catch at first but several of the officers, including Jorge, were finally able to weed through the many regular missing person’s reports and collect a thick file of those that disappeared under mysterious circumstances. No signs of struggle, no mutant hating groups, no estranged parents or older family members; nope, they just disappeared as if they had never existed. It was quite disturbing, especially considering the fact that the majority of them were kids and teens.
If there was one thing that Jorge could not stand it was the idea of kids being harmed in any way. That was the main reason he had decided to take these cases under his belt.
>> "Last month alone the numbers seem to have peeked, we're looking at teens and kids…I know there's a mutant school here, has anyone checked into the possibility of some sort of recruitment going on there? Their numbers seem to have been increasing lately too - quite exponentially since the mutant registration camps a few years ago."
Jorge arched a brow. There was more than likely only one school that she was referring to, Xavier’s. He gave an inward smirk. He wondered what she would have thought if she knew that he was fairly well acquainted with the school, as a matter of fact, even helped them out on occasion. And that he was even dating that school’s guidance counselor? It was funny, but he’d wait on any revelations like that.
>> "...anyway... that's just one of the many avenues I'd like to explore that are easier done by a PI than a cop. When a cop shows up many teens get defensive especially if they've had a... sorted... past…I can get into places, legally, that you can't without a warrant as well. He nodded, a small, impressed look on his face. She obviously had a hell of a record and everything that she was saying was indeed spot on. People tended to be nervous around police and more open to talking to “Private Investigators”. Unfortunately too many people believe the old stereotypes that cops are corrupt and working against the public, especially in cases with mutants. Even with a Mutant Related Crimes Division, he still faced off against people who were just not willing to talk or called him a traitor.
Sad but true state of the world.
>> "Of course, I’m much interested in the recent leads you may be following, whatever you're at leave to discuss."
She leaned back.
Then he leaned back in his chair. He eyed her closely, his poker face on as he watched. It was up to him whether or not they were going to include her in this case. Over and over they were running into a brick wall. Maybe a fresh set of eyes would be able to shed some light. She did have an impressive book and clipping collection though.
Suddenly clearing his throat the detective straightened up a little as he opened his coat and reached in. He pulled out a small folder and tossed it onto the table. Opening it, he showed her several shots of crime scenes, including a shop known as Future Sight.
“We think there might be a connection between some recent vandalism and the kids’ disappearances. But we cannot connect one to the other,” he said with a sigh. “But one thing has started to catch our interest. The appearance of a Unicorn Man…”
Lumen accepted the file and started pawing through it. Jorge had one hell of a poker face, she wasn't sure if she was winning him over or totally blowing her off here. She checked out the image of the shop Future Sight "Some sort of psychic place or whatever?" she asked pulling it out and looking at it. "That's a strange connection indeed." she held it up to the light as if some new evidence might magically shine through but saw nothing of too much interest.
Next she looked at the other crime scene photos and Jorge mentioned a unicorn man. "A mutant." she almost spat the word. Of course, it was a mutant. "So I guess this all being masterminded by some angry human is out of the question then." she leaned back in her chair. "Strange mutation, a horn on someone's head. Do you think that's all there is to it? His powers... I mean." she asked imagining a person growing up with a horn. She sincerely hoped he wasn't born that way.
"If it's all being led by a mutant... he may very well be the line connecting the dots." that much was obvious but it was a matter of finding proof. "How elusive is he? Has anyone pegged him for questioning yet?"
Lumen wasnt asking any more like a PI interested in taking the job. She was feeling ruthless with her sleuthing. This issue was starting to hit home and she was reminded more and more of her brother every day with every new piece of information. If some sick psycho mutant was recruiting kids, or worse yet brain washing them, she wanted to be part of the team that brought him down. "I'm going to level with you here detective. I want in"

Jorge
She was eager. Jorge could tell by the way she was pawing through the file that he had tossed onto the table in front of her. For the moment he said nothing else and simply sat back, letting her go over the information that the MRC was letting her whet your appetite with. He wanted to see what she could do with it, what connections she could draw. Though the MRC wanted to handle this as quietly as possible with as few people involved as needed to be, they were only running into dead-end after dead-end.
Maybe this would be the infusion they needed…
>> "Some sort of psychic place or whatever? That's a strange connection indeed."
He nodded.
“Fortune telling, tarot cards, crystal balls, the whole shebang,” he said with a nod. “They were hit twice at the peak of the disappearance of those kids.”
She started to go over the reports of the Unicorn.
>> "A mutant…So I guess this all being masterminded by some angry human is out of the question then…Strange mutation, a horn on someone's head. Do you think that's all there is to it? His powers... I mean…If it's all being led by a mutant... he may very well be the line connecting the dots…How elusive is he? Has anyone pegged him for questioning yet?"
Lot of questions…unfortunately he had very little answers. He sighed as he leaned forward a little, dropping his voice down. He needed to keep this between just him and her; the chief was only allowing him to share a small portion of this information.
“We can’t find him,” he said. As silly as it was for someone with a single horn on their head to disappear, it was the truth. The man had vanished and try as the MRC might, they simply couldn’t find him…
>> "I'm going to level with you here detective. I want in"
He looked closely into her eyes. He could see the resolution there. She was not going to back down from this. Another glance at the impressive collection she had of her own evidence, he had to admit that he was intrigued about what she could do with this case. So that alone made the decision for him.
But rather than say she in, he simply pulled his chair closer to the table so that his whispers could be heard.
“The Unicorn, has disappeared. His wife is gone, their son vanished months ago. From what we’ve been able to he is part of the flood of a certain drug that has found its way into the streets,” he turned the page to reveal a glossy photo of a pill with an ornate M on it. “You heard of it? It’s nasty stuff and causes a hell of a lot of havoc. His connect with the drug and the disappearance of the kids are linking up, but we don’t know how.” He said as he glanced to the side. Ears and eyes were everywhere. “We have one hell of a jigsaw puzzle but no way to make the pieces fit. Think you’re up to it?”
Lumen leaned in, she thought Jorge was fairly handsome when he walked in but leaning this close to him there was a certain aspect to his look that reminded her of her father. This was a smart man who wanted to be able to solve this thing.
"We heard about the drug on the rock." she said referencing Ireland. "There were no official reports of it being there but I had suspicions it may be starting to circulate on a national level, nothing concrete though. " she went back to the stuff on the unicorn man "I dont know why any sane people would want to use M. Mutations are rarely a gift and it's such a game of Russian Roulette. But from my research it's started out more recreationally... people looking to have fun, a laugh, add excitement. But it can quickly go sour. I've heard mumblings of underground mob-like stuff over the substance."
She leaned back in her chair again "So, we've got missing kids and teens, the numbers drastically increasing. A Unicorn Man who may be in the thick of it with his own family missing as well, throw some M in there and you've got all the fixings for one hell of a police migraine." she finished off the hot chocolate. "How much of this guy's info have you been able to gather? Is their anything to suggest animosity between him and his family? Maybe he wasn't so great a guy and the wife and kid took off. Or maybe it's the other way around. Maybe someone offed his family and he's a man with nothing left to lose." she commented.
She stared at the photo of the Unicorn Man. Did he even have a name? If she was accepted into this mission she'd make it her job to find out everything she could. He had that sort of strange face about him, like he'd seem young one minute and wise the next. He didn't look like some mass-kidnapper... but then again they never do.

Jorge nodded. She definitely knew how to do her home. He still remembered when he took part in that raid that had occurred months and months ago. Clemens had gone undercover as people ran amok, suddenly imbued with powers. For that night the police watched as normal humans stupidly became gods. It was utterly ridiculous. Yes, though Jorge was a mutant, he did not run around flaunting his power drunkenly. He used whatever “gifts” he had to help as many people as possible. That was his calling. Not to run around bragging about his gifts.
Apparently Lumen had to same idea. He respected her for that. It made him feel better that at least there were some younger people in the world who knew that their powers were for the not play things. They were a part of who people were, not some accessory that could be tailor made at a shop.
Slowly their conversation switched back to the topic at hand…
>> "So, we've got missing kids and teens, the numbers drastically increasing. A Unicorn Man who may be in the thick of it with his own family missing as well, throw some M in there and you've got all the fixings for one hell of a police migraine."
He smirked. “You’ve no idea…”
>>"How much of this guy's info have you been able to gather? Is there anything to suggest animosity between him and his family? Maybe he wasn't so great a guy and the wife and kid took off. Or maybe it's the other way around. Maybe someone offed his family and he's a man with nothing left to lose."[/i]
He sighed as he recalled facts about the case that he had been banging his head against for who knows how long now. All the pieces, so many connecting parts that didn’t actually connect! It was just maddening. But, he did hope that a fresh perspective could see something that they couldn’t.
He shook his head.
“No records of problems between he and his wife. If they had issues, they hid it extremely well. I met his wife, though. A woman by the name of Maya. She came to me because her son had gone missing. It was apparently around this time that the Unicorn, Sebastian, also disappeared and started cropping up causing tons of mayhem. On top of that a stockpile of M was found at their residence,” he sighed as he absently looked out the window. He never met Sebastian, but he knew his wife Maya. “It just doesn’t add up…”
Lumen listened intently to Jorge's description of the mutant's family. He didnt say as much she assumed the family were mutants as well, as open minded as some humans were actual known mutants marrying humans and producing children were a rarity. Too many mutants worried about passing on the x-gene and too many humans were afraid of the same thing or the associated dangers of living with a mutant. She wondered how a man with a horn sticking out of his head could even kiss someone, let alone make a baby. She shook her head trying to get that mental image out.
"No... it certainly doesn't sound like it adds up at all." commented Lumen. "Well, we certainly aren't going to get any further with it sitting around here." she gave a stretch then reached back into the bag and got out her card "I'd like to be on the case, if you decide you'd like to have me here's my card." she passed it to him. "I can start right away, I'll probably head to the Future Site shop and check things out and maybe follow up with some of the parents of the missing kid. Finally, I'll help you make your file on the Unicorn Man as big as it can get." she started scooping up her belongings. It was getting dark out and she had a head ache. If she didnt let off some light soon she was liable to glow the rest of the night and that made sleeping a great deal more difficult.
"As soon as you give me the go ahead I can jump in, and forward all of my information to you of course." she stuck out her hand to shake his goodbye "Detective"

>> "No... it certainly doesn't sound like it adds up at all…”
Jorge shook his head. He and many others had investigated several aspects of this case separately and each time they came up empty handed. Story of their life, apparently. But he had a feeling that something was happening. There was a reason why these disappearances were on the rise and he felt that it was connected with Sebastian. In what way, he didn’t know yet. All he knew it was going to make itself known before long. Therefore he hoped that they could figure it out beforehand and, at least have a plan.
But as he mused, Lumen suddenly stood up…
>> “Well, we certainly aren't going to get any further with it sitting around here…I'd like to be on the case, if you decide you'd like to have me here's my card…I can start right away, I'll probably head to the Future Site shop and check things out and maybe follow up with some of the parents of the missing kid. Finally, I'll help you make your file on the Unicorn Man as big as it can get."
He stood as he nodded his thanks and took the card from her. He turned it over once or twice in his hand before he slipped it quietly into his coat pocket. She was eager to get onto this case and he had a feeling that the chief was going to like her style, after she read his report, of course. The skill and interest she had in the case was promising and Jorge knew that they would be lucky to have her services.
A phone call to her would definitely be made…
>> "As soon as you give me the go ahead I can jump in, and forward all of my information to you of course…Detective"
A nod of respect and Jorge flashed her a warm smile as he reached out and took her hand gently in his. He shook her hand in goodbye.
“It was nice to meet you, Ms. Collins. You’ll be hearing from us soon.” he said reassuringly.
And there it was, a 10000 kilowatt smile. Lumen had to wonder if Jorge was a lady killer. He shook her hand goodbye and they parted ways, Lumen heading in the opposite direction once she got outside the door.
Unicorn Man. She still couldn't wrap her head around that as a mutation. There had to be more to it. Did the guy have super Unicorn powers? Could he fly? No wait- that was Pegasus. Did the horn do something special? And what about this family of his. She still thought it was incredibly suspicious that the wife and kid just disappeared. She didn't get a chance though to read anymore information while with the detective. It was considered 'sensitive' and 'confidential'. Hopefully she'd be receiving a call from them soon and have the entire file forwarded her way. Speaking of which...
She whipped out her phone and fired of a quick text to the agency that arranged the meeting. She felt it went pretty good and knew she'd be up late tonight researching M and seeing what else she could find out about the mutant school. Jorge barley raised an eyebrow at that suggestion. Sure the evidence so far pointed to the Unicorn Man and Future Site... but she felt like a big piece was missing and when there's a school hoarding mutants like advent chocolate she was curious why no one was checking it out. Perhaps another meeting might be in order with someone from the school.... only after the final OK from the boys in blue.
