The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

A 12.0 on a 10 point scale of badness. This comic was a bit like that. It, was amazing. Amelia turned another page in her DOOM comic book adaptation, Knee Deep in Dead. She snerked.
"Genius, still." She said quietly, from her seat at one of the tables near the coffee bar of the Full Circle book store.
Behind the counter of the coffee bar, a certain special someone shifted uncomfortably, dealing with a customer. He had dirty blond hair, looked like a super model, and was... her brother. Apparently, her presence at his place of business during work hours bothered him. Which was why she was doing it, obviously.
Amelia turned another page. Yup. Still amazing. She took a sip of her cocoa. The cup came away, leaving a cocoa mustache. She let it stay there for a minute as she read. Then, daintily, she dabbed at it with a paper napkin.
A cute guy walked away from the counter, coffees-in-hand. Amelia glanced over the top of her page at him as he went for the doors. Dang. The guy must've had a girlfriend. Two coffees. He probably wasn't just thirsty.
It was nearly the end of summer break and she still hadn't found a boyfriend. It kind of stunk. Because all the guys she went after thought they were far too mature for her. Maybe today she'd get lucky? A girl could swoon however she liked.
Another bookstore, another mass of books to go through. From the doors of the Full Circle establishment, a young teenage girl stepped inside. She was only 5’5 but her very thin and sleek frame gave her a slightly taller look. Wearing jeans and a deep purple turtle neck sweater (in this weather?!), she casually brushed some strands of brown hair behind her pale ears as she looked down at a slip of paper she held in her hands. Her crystal blue eyes roamed over her own hand-writing as she thoughtfully nibbled on her bottom lip. With a small, frustrated sigh, she simply folded the paper in half and looked up at her surroundings.
Agnes Nicholas, the bug spewing mutant teen glanced around the establishment. Ever since the guidance counselor got her some part-time work working with the gardeners at the mansion, she had been wanting to brush up on her gardening skills. But so far all the books in the library were either out dated, or written all over by the annoying plant manipulating students. And book stores in general were either coming up as too expensive way too confusing.
All she needed was a brush up! Not a full grown horticultural course!
Then again…there was something else fueling her gardening obsession right now. Her parents had invaded the mansion and attempted to pull her home. The fight that ensued was something that she never would have guessed or believed would happen. She’d rather not think about it, which was why she was on this goose chase for the perfect gardening book. Anything to keep her mind off what happened at the mansion and on the times to come.
The runaway looked up at the counter she had to sigh a bit in relief. At least this place had a seemingly reasonable coffee bar. Maybe she could take a second or two to get her bearings before she continued the search. Stuffing her hands in her pockets, she casually made her way over to the counter, eyes rolling over the various patrons of the book store.
A couple were off in some hidden corner making out, a younger boy trying to hide a magazine inside of a large and heavy looking math book, an older man was taking his time as he perused the “Classics” section. The place definitely had the vibe of a bookstore down the street.
Coming up to the counter, Agnes ordered a simple Cinnamon Mocha Frappachino, with extra whipped cream, and took her ticket number. She then maneuvered her way to one of the tables to sit and wait for her order.
Agnes sighed gratefully as she took her seat and glanced about the room. Looking off to the side, she noted that there was another young girl there, seemingly engrossed in a comic book. Agnes did not mean to stare but she was attempting to read the title on the cover. Whatever it was, it looked gruesome…just like the comics her brother used to like to bring her.
Momentarily lost in her thought, Agnes turned away, hopefully, before the other girl spotted her staring…
It was too late. A pretty girl, sitting across from her, in shouting distance of her brother? How could she not notice a potential target for bothering Aurum?
Amelia smirked. "Hey," she said. "Interested in comic books?" The girl had been staring, after all. "I could let you have a look. My name's Ami, by the way."
The girl glanced towards her brother. "He's Aurum. This is his." It really wasn't. It was some guy's from school. Some guy from the AV club who really loved classic comic books. She'd talked him into letting her borrow it before summer had begun. If it could be utilized as bait for potential brother-girlfriends, it was worth sharing the love. People always told her she had a penchant for mischief. She told them they were imagining things. She was only being a good sister. A good friend.
Indeed. Her oh so clever cover of looking away real fast was foiled by that swift eyed teen. Agnes felt a pang of fear because if there was one thing that she was not good at, it was meeting new people. The friends she had now she got either through luck or simply because they happened to have strong enough personalities to not let the runaway’s shyness deter them from getting to know her. Apparently this girl also had some of that same strength and resilience to simply say “hi” to a stranger and hope for the best.
Maybe one day Agnes will do that…
>> "… Interested in comic books? I could let you have a look. My name's Ami, by the way."
Well if there was one thing that Agnes could not be right now, was rude. The girl seemed nice enough, she offered her a look at the comic. She wondered if it was one that her brother had in his massive collection before he disappeared? It did have a recognizable art style…
A shy smile formed across her lips as she nodded to her fellow teenager.
“Agnes,” she responded. “Nice to meet you Ami. And…sure, I-I wouldn’t mind taking a look at it.”
Even as the words left her mouth she still could not believe that she said it. This was not like her, she didn’t just accept invitations from strangers to look at their books. But then again, she really was not like her old self anymore. Her parents were out of the picture at last and she was starting to carve out a life for herself, finally. Maybe it was time she lost some of the shyness that she always let cripple her when she first appeared at the mansion.
It would be a welcome change than her usual spitting bugs at someone and then running the other way.
>> "He's Aurum. This is his."
The runaway’s eyebrow arched in confusion as she tilted her head, looked at the comic and then turned to see who it was Ami was nodding to. As she turned she noticed the young man behind the counter and immediately she was struck with a sense of familiarity. She could not quiet place his face or where it was she had seen him before, but…there was something about him that indeed seemed like she had seen him before. On top of that, when she looked at him, she could swear she saw some other woman’s face attached to him. Some…jealous…scary woman that didn’t allow him to talk to anyone else…
Agnes shook the thought out and turned back to Ami.
“He seems nice enough to trust you with his comic collection,” she said with a smile. “My brother used to share his collection with me all the time.”
The girl smiled and Amelia instantly knew she was a bit shy. Shy or not, she was brave enough to continue onward, though. One could not fault Agnes for that.
Continue onward, Amelia did, for Agnes's sake. She introduced her brother. And so the plotting began.
On the topic of Aurum, Agnes had one thing to say: 'He seems nice.'
Amelia gave a friendly nod. "Very nice. Always sharing things. And he cooks." Aurum took the moment to call Agnes's number. It was convenient timing. "See?" She gestured casually with her hands. "He's good."
>> "Very nice. Always sharing things. And he cooks."
Agnes smirked as listened to Ami rave about the man. She wondered if they were related but why was she pushing the man on her attention so much? Apparently he was nice, he likes to share and he loves to cook. While those may be nice attributes and all, that’s not exactly something that you say to a total stranger just out of the blue. There was something fishy about this whole scenario but Agnes really couldn’t put her finger on what it was, exactly.
But as Agnes mused on this though, suddenly she heard a number being shouted out. She glanced down to her receipt and saw that it had the same number printed on it. Oh! Her drink was ready…
>> "See? He's good."
“Yeah,” Agnes said both a little confused and shyly. “Um, I’ll be right back.”
As she separated herself from her conversation, Agnes walked over to the counter and the girl’s words ran across her mind: Very Nice. Sharing. Cooks. Good. Comics Books. It was only when she got closer to the counter that the puzzle pieces all finally snapped together.
Oh…my god… she thought to herself. She’s trying to set me up.
Head tilted she turned briefly to look back over at Ami. Seriously? The girl was seriously trying to set her up with this guy by playing up all his good qualities? Agnes shook her head as she turned back around once she arrived at the counter. A fierce blush appeared on her cheeks as she took her drink order from the man behind the counter; Aurum, that’s what Ami called him.
“Thank you,” she whispered staring at the counter. She felt just slightly embarrassed…but then again she could not really be angry at Ami. It’s not as if she knew that Agnes was gay…
Amidst all the glancing and blushing, Aurum was unawares. He gave the woman her drink with a smile. "You're welcome."
Girls often stared at that spot on the counter. There was nothing suspicious about staring at that spot.
"That'll be..." He rattled off the total.
Not too far away, Ami waved her arm at him. He ignored her. She was up to something. He had no idea what. It was probably something innocent, like nuking New York or getting him to hook her up with some good beverage or cute guy, though. As in, not very innocent at all. His eyes narrowed at her. He mouthed 'what?'
Amelia surreptitiously (yeah right) thrust her hands in the girl's general direction. She ducked down a split-second afterwards, immersing herself stealthily in her reading. She played it cool. She played it ice cold.
Aurum arched an eyebrow, then shifted his focus calmly back to the customer. Hopefully, she hadn't seen the exchange. Ami was always doing things like this. It was always so awkward.
Aurum was always doing things like this. Ignoring her set-ups. It was always so disappointing. Who knew? Maybe he was gay? Maybe she'd have to find him a cute guy.
Agnes only half heard the price of her drink as she stared at that interesting spot on the counter and nearly bore a hole through its surface with her eyes. She still could not believe that she was in the middle of this. This is what she gets for talking to a stranger…immediately attempted to be set up to someone she didn’t know. Or maybe she did. He still looked familiar. But whatever! It was still irritating that now she had to be in this embarrassing situation.
And anyways, what the hell was Ami thinking? This had to be like, what, ten years older than her? He was ancient. AND she dated girls, not guys.
She sighed a bit in her mental ranting before she finally looked up at Aurum (what kind of name is that anyways?!) and saw him bring his vision back down to her. The man apparently had been preoccupied with something else off scene that she did not know about since she didn’t have eyes in the back of her head. But she was more than certain that whatever it was, it was directed to Ami.
He flashed her another smile as he waited.
And waited…and waited…
“Oh, money, right,” she said as she reached into her pocket. “Sorry,” she said as he grabbed the correct change for the drink as well as a couple of bucks for the tip, “Just having one of those ‘distracted by irritating things’ days. Here you go,” she said as she handed him the money.
She’d pay Ami back for this. Even though she had just met her…it was totally on…
Agnes paid Aurum the money... and he didn't even attempt to ask the girl's name or number? Let. Down. Amelia kept on reading that comic. Maybe her brother wasn't as manly and impressive as a super model. Maybe he wasn't even as impressive as this comic book super hero. This man who was more than twice Aurum. No, wait. Maybe not twice Aurum. This man and a half. Who was a man and a half? He was a man and a half. Yeah. That made more sense.
Amelia leaned forward and snagged her cocoa, taking a long sip while Agnes made her way back to the dining area.
"So," she started, conversationally. "I actually lied. Sorry 'bout that."
Once Agnes had handed over her money and fled from the counter she surprisingly found herself returning to the table. Normally when something like this would happen, the teenager would simply walk away. She’d point herself to the door and head back out into the day to leave this embarrassing situation behind. But something drew her back to Ami’s table. Maybe it was because she didn’t want to run away from weird situations anymore, maybe she just had something to prove, maybe it was simply because she wanted to see what else Ami had up her sleeve. Agnes didn’t know, but either way, she was not leaving the establishment.
She claimed her seat once more at the table, after all, Ami did say she could look at the comic, and arched an eyebrow her way.
>> "So…I actually lied. Sorry 'bout that."
“Really? I totally didn’t catch that you just lied to me,” she said with a small grin.
Agnes didn’t know what it was about the girl, but there was just something in her that made her not want to stay made. It was almost as if this were something she did on a daily basis so she developed some type of immunity for people to be angry at her. Maybe she was a mutant and she could keep people from having negative feelings towards her? Well…that’s just a silly idea.
The runaway sighed as she shook her head.
“What, did I just look that desperate when I walked in?” she said with a small joking laugh. “Besides, that guy has to be like ten years older. And trust me, he’s not in a silk bathrobe and I’m not a supermodel bunny. It’d never work.”
"No, I'm sorry about him." She gestured Aurum's way. "My brother. This isn't his comic, and... he isn't as cool as I made him out to be. Really. I mean..." She looked Agnes seriously in the eye. "He doesn't even know how to handle pretty girls."
Had Agnes looked desperate when she walked in? No way. It was Aurum who'd been evading her attempts at set-ups for ages now. Ever since Viletta, as far as Amelia was concerned, the boy simply had not been quite right when it came to pretty ladies.
"Funny image, him in a silk bathrobe and you in a bunny costume, though... remind me never to let you put ideas in my head about my brother again." That image was just. Awkward. Amelia laughed it off.
Apparently her question had struck a funny nerve in Ami’s head. Agnes watched the girl had a hearty laugh and Agnes could not help but join in. In a way, despite how embarrassing the situation was, it really was kind of funny. Especially the image of her in a slinky bunny costume. That was definitely not for her. Just her scars alone would drastically drop sales that that bunny themed magazine and send it into ruin. Or…so at least she would think.
>> "No, I'm sorry about him. My brother. This isn't his comic, and... he isn't as cool as I made him out to be. Really. I mean...He doesn't even know how to handle pretty girls."
So there was the story. Aurum was her brother and she was trying to set him up. Whether it be because of genuine worry or simply to be a bother while he was working, she didn’t know. There seemed to be some type of caring behind Ami’s eyes. Maybe she really was just trying to help him out. But still, that did not mean that Agnes appreciated being the bait for her brother’s lacking love life.
Shaking her head, she only chuckled and she glanced over to Aurum as he worked behind the counter. It was obvious that he was trying to keep a steady eye on Ami but also trying to appear as if he wasn’t. Poor guy. It made Agnes wonder how much torture her fellow teenager put him through.
“Well…him not owning the comic is definitely a failing. And...maybe he isn’t as cool,” Agnes said as she turned back to Ami. “But he does seem nice. I’m sure he’ll find some girl his own age to go out with him.”
Agnes took a sip of her drink. Mmm, it was good. So maybe that was another good quality the man had.
>> "Funny image, him in a silk bathrobe and you in a bunny costume, though... remind me never to let you put ideas in my head about my brother again."
Mwah aha! Vengeance gained! Agnes thought with a tiny smirk.
She giggled, actually giggled as she thought about this too. It really was a funny image to have in her head, of Aurum in a Hefner robe and herself in a bunny outfit. That outta give the teenager some nightmares. Another glance at Aurum, imagined him in the robe, and she was off on another giggling fit before she turned back to Ami.
“Yeah, I apologize for that,” she sighed as she took another sip of her drink. That last thing she wanted to was draw his attention to them. “So, what are you reading, anyways?” she asked, full of curiosity.
He was definitely still cool. And maybe, yeah, she should have been searching out girls closer to her brother's age. Even though she thought the whole concept of 'age' was silly, where true love was involved. Where true love was involved, lots of things could be silly. Silly like the image Agnes had tried putting in her head.
Ew, get out creepy image. Why was Agnes smirking about that! Not that she was resentful. She could laugh such things off. As she quickly displayed. Agnes laughed it off, too.
Amelia smirked. "Apology accepted." She said.
The girl asked what Amelia was reading. She suddenly remembered she had a gory comic book in her hands. She passed it Agnes's way. "It's called Knee Deep in Dead. It's a DOOM comic. Hilariously bad. Read it. I insist." She could watch. And wait for more laughter. It was sure to follow.
Well that was good. Not wanting to kill each other right off the bad was indeed a good way for them get off to the right foot. Though Agnes could see that Ami was still suffering under the image of her brother in a Hefner robe. Apparently it was so horrific to the teenager that image was now forever burned behind her retinas. So…vengeance was had…and still she forgave her. Definitely a step in the right direction for the pair of them.
And when finally the question of the comic was brought up, Ami seemed eager to share in the badness of it. There was little that Agnes could do but comply with the teen girl’s wishes.
After all, Agnes enjoyed a bad comic book as much as anyone.
>> "It's called Knee Deep in Dead. It's a DOOM comic. Hilariously bad. Read it. I insist."
Agnes grinned as she pulled the comic over. “The title alone makes me laugh,” she giggled as she opened it up and began to read.
Now, first of all, Agnes was used to gory comics. Though her parents had absolutely strict rules on what she could wear, what she could watch on TV, and what she could read, her brother had always managed to sneak her some gems. When he first did it, Agnes would cry because she didn’t want him to get into trouble. But it seemed as if he never cared about the potentiality of that. He just loved sharing…something with her that was not some overly zealous nonsense.
That why when Agnes got to the page that showed a burly man ripping out the spine of a zombie, she could only laugh out loud instead of cringe.
“Oh my god!” she said as she started laughing. She glanced to Ami before she turned back and read out loud. “ ‘Yeah, that’s your spinal cord, baby! Dig it! Who’s the man? I’m the man! I’m a bad man!’ “
Agnes simply could not contain herself anymore as she shook her head and managed to laugh quietly between herself and Ami. It really was just too funny and too horribly bad to really stop reading it. It was one of those things that you needed to continue no matter what. The comic was bad, but sitting here, reading with nice girl was sure a fun way to whittle away the day…and her problems.
