The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

There she was again, walking into the shop. The bell rang signaling an opening and closing door. Twice. Another time she'd walked into his world. The last time she'd entered, he'd lost his mentor. The man had been a criminal, a drug dealer for the mutant drug 'M'. That was what they called it, the drug that gave humans mutant powers like super strength and bunny shifting and hurling brightly-colored eggs. They'd took him for a ride together, found the evidence, gotten him locked away. She'd gotten his boss arrested, yet somehow... he didn't blame her. Yet, there she was again, walking into his world... and slipping stealthfully into the romance section of the book store... out of his world, into a whole other dimension. Aurum took a sip of his coffee and set down his Dashiell Hammett anthology. He was feeling way too hardboiled for any of this.
There was a tacit peace between the two of them. Had been, ever since she'd helped him help himself. He'd lost his memory. Things had eventually foggily came back. They hadn't talked about things between them, ever since the end of the case. They'd lift things cool. Frozen. Like a block of ice. Not warm. In the slightest. There wasn't even any indication such a feat was possible. She was giving him the cold shoulder. Or maybe she just really needed her fix of bad romance...
He took another sip of his coffee. Yeah. There was no possible way that song had not just gotten stuck in his head.

The only reason…only reason that Riley Sommers was walking down the street towards the Full Circle Bookstore was because they’d seen her in there before…and the workers were discreet enough for her to trust with her secret. Her dark…nasty…embarrassing secret. She was at the Full Circle so that she could buy romance novels. She definitely was not at the Full Circle to see a certain coffee bartender…or whatever the hell they liked to call themselves.
Actually, Riley mused as she made her way through the shop, it had been quite a while since she’d seen or heard from Aurum. After the whole thing with Lonnie had gone down and they hadn’t gotten killed...things had cooled off. A lot. In fact...cool probably wasn't a good descriptor...sub-arctic was probably better.
But…she wasn’t here to see him, even just to see how things were going. She was here for a book. Riley didn’t even look at the coffee bar as she made her way to the Romance section. If he’d wanted to talk to her…he’d have found a way. Not that she really cared. Aurum was an annoying little idealist who was going to become a big fancy, hotshot lawyer…and he'd probably be really good at it. Why would he want to talk to someone like her?
Irritated at herself for no good reason, Riley browsed the shelves, trying to find something she hadn’t already read that wasn’t a Harlequin. Maybe she read romance novels…but she read good romance novels. Picking one at random, Riley flipped to the middle and started reading…this was how she always picked books. If it could snag her attention…well the book had a new home.
The empty coffee cup flew through the air into the trash can. Aurum was done with the 'hardboiled' thing. He slipped his bookmarked anthology away under the counter and grabbed the attention of another employee who'd been shelving books. "Cover for me," He said. The guy eyed him curiously. "I've got something to handle." The guy nodded, trading places with him behind the counter.
Aurum strode away from the coffee bar, to... the romance section. Which apparently required mental ellipses. It was just that dramatic. He stopped a short ways away from the woman. Aurum crossed his arms. Hardboiled hour was over. Bold time was now. "Long time, no see Riley." He said. He didn't comment on the book. "We really ought to catch up. Maybe after I finish up my shift here? Coffee?"

Riley nearly jumped out of her skin when a voice rang out next to her in the Romance section. It was Aurum, and she stared at him as he nonchalantly commented on how long it had been. Apparently he did want to talk to her…
Aurum asked if she wanted to grab coffee after his shift was over. A dark eyebrow rose, and Riley opened her mouth to tell Aurum what she thought of his offer.
”Sure. I could do that.”
Oh. Apparently she liked it. Riley stood there…mildly dumbfounded with herself and staring at the book in her hands. There was no going back now without looking like a total cow...but there was no way Riley was going to admit, not even to herself that she liked the idea.
She actually had said yes? For a woman who had given him the cold shoulder for several months, that was a surprising response. Not that he was shocked, of course, or making a big deal of it, but... it was nice she hadn't rebuffed him.
When was he done?
"My shift ends at Five." Aurum replied. He smiled calmly at her. "Sundays, we close earlier." It still wasn't quite five, however. She'd have to wait a while. "Do you know where Nirvana is? I could meet you there."

He was surprised that she’d said yes. Riley closed the book and let it drop to her side, dangling from her hand as he explained that he was off at five. That meant she had some time to burn…but not long enough to actually go home.
Aurum asked if she’d ever been to Nirvana, and she simply had to burst out laughing as he explained that she could wait for him there. So many comments to be made…and they all tripped over themselves trying to get past her lips.
”I may have been there a time or two.” she said, still shaking her head and chuckling. ”But yeah, I’ll meet you there.” The book went back on the shelf, and she walked past Aurum.
”Just don’t make me wait too long.” she said over her shoulder.
Just because they hadn’t seen each other in a while didn’t mean that everything had changed. The afternoon sure had gotten interesting all of a sudden.
Apparently, asking a woman if she'd ever been to Nirvana was funny. It hadn't even been a line. It was good to know you didn't have to ask a woman if she was from heaven to get her to laugh in your face. She wasn't laughing in his face, though... not quite. An uncertain smile slipped across his face earnestly.
Turns out, she had been there once or twice. She still wanted to meet him. Great.
>>”Just don’t make me wait too long.”
She said as she left him in the romance section.
"I'll be there," he called after her.
That done, he left the aisle himself. It was time to finish up his shift.
The guy who'd filled in for him just shook his head with a laugh. "Picking up women on the job." He said. "Don't let the boss find out."

The Nirvana Coffee shop was, in a word, heavenly, and Riley complimented herself on the mental word play. It was just after five, and she hoped that Aurum had taken her words to heart. Riley had decided that she would wait fifteen, maybe twenty minutes…then she was out. It was one thing to agree to meet someone for a cup of coffee…it was another to sit around and hang on their arrival. Besides…this was Aurum it wasn’t like she was waiting on a date.
Was she?
Riley sighed and growled at the thought, tossing her hair and looking for somewhere to sit. She moved past the high-tops. If there was one thing that Riley hated it was sitting in the middle of a room full of people. Maybe it was arrogant, but she felt like everyone was always staring at her. She did not like being the center of attention…especially when she was stuffing her face or trying to have a conversation.
Nirvana was a quiet, warm little coffee shop and as she slid into a booth, Riley had to admit that it was slightly less swanky than she’d expected from Aurum. One thing was for sure though…the coffee must have been great. Riley didn’t order anything, though…figuring Aurum would just criticize whatever choice she made. Instead she sat in the booth and waited, playing a game on her phone as she watched the minutes tick by.
The rest of the day was busy. People flocked in one after the other after the other thirty. A tidal wave of people. He served them all. Now and again, he looked at the clock. It dragged like a dog drags its tail on the carpet. The day didn't seem to want to end. Finally, it did.
Aurum checked out. He hopped in his car and hit Nirvana. Parked and found his way inside. As he entered, Aurum checked his Phoenix Wright watch. It was 5:07. He was pretty much right on time. He looked up. Riley was there. Aurum approached the table.

5:07 Not bad. Riley looked up and let a slight smile curve her lips. He’d been on time, he also asked if she’d ordered anything. Riley shook her head, ”Nope.” she said. ”I figured I’d let you do the honors….since you’re a coffee savant or whatever.”
Another pause, ”I didn’t want to insult your palette by ordering the wrong thing.”
"Aww, I'm touched." Aurum slid into his chair. He shook his head at her with a light laugh. "But I think it might be better if you pick your own. I trust your judgment. At a place like this, one really cannot go wrong. Everything's good."
A woman with curly blond hair in an apron approached their table. She handed a menu to each of them with a smile, then turned and left them to themselves for the moment. Aurum cracked open his menu and glanced down the page.
"Yup. Tons of good options." What? Did she think he was some kind of snob?

Riley rose an eyebrow when Aurum when he said he was touched…that wasn’t exactly what she’d been going for. She’d honestly been hoping to avoid a lecture on why what she’d picked had been the wrong choice. Apparently he trusted her judgment though. Yeah right. This was some sort of test.
Riley didn’t even look at the blond when she dropped off the menus, she was looking at Aurum, trying to take his measure. Was it possible that he was telling the truth…that everything was good here? Or did he expect her to pick something good. This was impossible.
So many choices…yeah…there were tons. Riley looked at the menu and frowned. Then she set it down.
”I think I’ll just have a mocha.” she said. There. That was her play. She was going to go with simple. Let him try to judge.
She gave him a minute to check the menu, then spoke to break an uncomfortable silence before it had a chance to form, ” So…how’s it been? Did you find another guy to work for?” Geez…this sounded like another conversation they’d had…hopefully Aurum would be a little more gracious than she’d been when he’d asked her the same thing.
Aurum looked up from the menu at her when she asked him her question."Actually, I decided to skip apprenticing and just go for it." He replied with a small smile. "I took the bar. I think I did well. Surprisingly enough." What had she ordered? A mocha? Hm. His attention dropped back down to the menu. "I think I'll get a mocha, too."

Wow, he’d skipped the whole apprentice stage. That was…interesting, and… ”So, I actually did you a favor.” Riley said with a slight smirk. ”I ought to demand a percentage of your first year of profit.” she added. But...her smirk quickly faded. Soon he’d be a hotshot lawyer…in the same field as that sleaze Lonnie. Why had he had to pick defense?
What had she been up to? Riley shrugged her shoulders, ”Same old.” she said simply. ”As long as I stay well away from Gerry and his crew of flunkies, I do well enough in the business.” She’d made some connections over the past couple of months, become a regular with a few of the nicer photographers in town. Apparently Aurum didn’t frequent those magazines. The thought almost made her laugh.
”So what are you going to do once you’re an official fancy-pants lawyer?”
>>So, I actually did you a favor.” Riley smirked. ”I ought to demand a percentage of your first year of profit.”
Aurum chuckled. "Funny," He smiled at her. "You think I'll make a cent."
It sounded like Riley was doing alright for herself. "That's good," Aurum agreed. "No magician's helper jobs, then. Just your forte." Looking good, he left unsaid.
>>”So what are you going to do once you’re an official fancy-pants lawyer?” Riley asked him.
Aurum donned his most serious look. "Get a job," He deadpanned. The serious face softened. "Seriously. I don't think I'll be making much money until I can find someone to employ me, unless I start my own law office. And I don't have that kind of money."
