The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"A lot of jobs you do something, this one one where you are something." You can turn off the heightened awareness and aggression, but you can't turn off what made you go into law enforcement in the first place. "If you ask my captain though he might tell you he wished we could work twenty-five hours a day."
Rianne took a sip of her drink. A sip that she didn't risk propelling from her nose. "That's exactly why I feel the way I do. The worse things get the more needed I am. I can't not help." And the worse things get the more her job in particular becomes necessary. As an SRT officer she was the closest this city had to ‘One Riot, One Ranger.’
Rianne laughed at, “karaoke cop.”
”I have been getting all the best nicknames lately.... Karaoke Cop, Constable Barbie.” The agent who’d given her the latter name she felt she’d given him a good one too. Or at the very least, one that he wouldn’t like getting around. ”I should get hats with them embroidered on them. Ones that look like what I wear as part of my tactical uniform.” She couldn’t help using her hands to mime the hat and reference where the name would be written.

His lips found her hand. He had a terrible sinking feeling. He'd swung and missed. She then moved her hand away before saying.
"Keep your mouth shut."
The Ranger obliged as she framed his face with her hands and moved so close their noses touched before stopping. So close. The pounding in his chest returned. He could smell her breath. And then she pulled away.
Had she had second thoughts, but then second guessed those second thoughts. Fourth thoughts?
Her actions didn't completely line up with that either. Instead of moving away she brought her forehead to his lips. Only then did she explain. Not only does she taste lies, she takes in memories by taste.
It took the Ranger a long moment to process this. It wasn't a question of understanding, he had issues with those who could get into people's heads. He'd so far been able to manage with Noel. Being separated by only a hand from her having some of his memories, that was the issue. That made it more real.
He could deal with his own issues later. For now there was a pretty girl, he had been losing his mind over that night, who had just told him something that sounded like it took a lot for her to say. Instead of just continuing to stand there dazed and stupid, he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead.
"No kissing then." He said, "I jus' couldn't find words." And he still couldn't.
A short drive back, even with the Ranger driving like a normal person. He didn't drive slow, but he didn't go fast. Driving slow would only drag this part of the night out longer. He needed to say something to her, let her know how he was feeling, but not here. Not in the car.
Park in the garage, walk to the main building, up the elevator. Even with a cup of coffee in his system he was still tired. He had woken almost twenty-three hours before. Not to mention work and dancing in that time.
The Ranger walked Noel to her door. His heart was pounding as she thanked him. She had looked back to say the final thanks. Now or never.
He reached out and set his hand on her arm to get her to stay, "Noel, I..." Words were lost to him. He was going for broke. His heart still pounding away like a sledge hammer he leaned in to kiss Noel.
Nothing at his mention of just keeping it pleasure. Maybe she only did think of this as just a fun night out dancing. Maybe he ought to stop beating around the bush and let Noel know he was interested in her. That was likely best left for after the drive back, just in case things didn't go well.
"Not only do I have a car an' a bike, I have an F650. I call it the Fordasaurus. It's my work truck, y' never know when y'll need an urban assault vehicle."
Noel wasn't going to finish her coffee. This might speed up the end to the night a smidge. The Ranger must just be use to a lower caliber of coffee from his time in the military. He drank some more of his while Noel looked for a trashcan. "There was one by the food truck I think."
He downed the rest of his coffee. No sense in him being slow if she was just going to toss hers. Instead he went with her to the trashcan and discarded the foil and now empty coffee cup. Then it was back to the car. Again the Ranger opened the door for Noel.
Sunlight broke over the horizon as they drove back to Haven. They had been out literally all night. Sunset to sunrise.

”What’s a taco? A tortilla with meat cheese an’ vegetables. What’s a burrito?. A tortilla with meat cheese an’ vegetables.” The Ranger said between bites. It was similar to something he’d heard a comedian say once.
The Ranger paused mid chew, “...keep business and pleasure separate.” He resumed chewing a moment later then swallowed. The Ranger had meant getting her back into the industry, not necessarily work for him. Though, them being in the same industry had put them on the same job before despite working for different companies with different employers. Noel had brought up it being a mix of business and pleasure. Did that mean she thought of this as more than just a fun night out dancing?
She added to her comment before Ranger could reply. She would take it under advisement, At least the paperwork part. It sounded like her trying to roll back a bit of what she had said. Him helping with paperwork wouldn’t be mixing business with pleasure so much though.
”That’s fair enough, keep it pleasure then.” He said smiling to her. ”Jus’ let me know what paperwork you need pushed through, I’ve got some old war buds I can call t’ get things movin’.”
“You’re quite the degenerate: skipping work and staying out all night.”
”The worst. Next I’ll wear a leather jacket an’ ride motorcycles.” He paused for a moment before adding, ”Oh, I already do. Ladies hide y’r daughters.” He resisted the urge to pop his collar.
The Ranger finished his taco as Noel said that they should fight. He had to stop from spraying the remains of his taco. It had not been an answer he was expecting. Also easy to control laughter when a hand flies at your abdomen and stops just touching your shirt. “...but I’m not sure we can realistically keep this party going too much longer.”
A final swallow and the Ranger crumpled his foil up in a tight little ball. He then brought that hand to his abdomen where Noel had not struck. Real morning, not this the Sun isn’t showing but people are about morning, was fast approaching. He sighed and said, ”I think y’re right. Cain’t fault me f’r tryin’.” He smiled again looking at Noel willing time to move slower.

While they danced, they had talked. Noel told the Ranger of her last three years, of memories of the ancient world she had, and of her legal problems. The Ranger gave her a brief rundown his last three years, as much as he could without violating any agreement for secrecy.
“Oh man. After midnight tacos? This is like college all over again.”
”I’ll take y’r word for it. I enlisted right out of high school.” He’d done some college while in the military but had never had the college experience or completed a degree. If college meant staying out until 0400 dancing then getting tacos, he might have to enroll. Maybe not, doing this multiple nights a week might be problematic.
Eventually the dancehall employees shooed them out. They wanted to clean up so they could go home. This left the Ranger and Noel out by his car searching for a food truck still open. Finally finding one they jumped in the car and headed over. It wasn’t a long drive, not because it was close but because traffic was not its normal oppressive self. The Ranger could let the Hellcat Tamer’s engine roar.
The food truck was serving breakfast tacos. Taco was in the name, still counts. Besides, it meant a taco with bacon. Who can say no to that? Certainly not the Ranger. They ordered and the Ranger paid.
Food and questionable coffee in hand, they leaned against a concrete pillar. No food in the car. Racecars didn’t need to smell like tacos and coffee. The Ranger dug into his breakfast taco, which, due to him paying for extra everything, could barely be contained within its tortilla. The real trick was keeping the salsa from all running out as he ate.
“So, yeah. Now I just have to figure out what to do with my life.”
The Ranger swallowed and said, ”If y’ decide y’ want t’ work security again I know I can help. Anythin’ else an’ at least I can maybe help get y’r paperwork movin’.” The contacts he’d had to make to get his PMC set up in the city should be able to help Noel. A contact in the police, a couple in various governmental level, and some at the various alphabet soup departments and bureaus that make up the Federal side.
Did he have to be at work today? This was something he hadn’t even thought about. Being with Noel he’d forgotten about everything else. ”I don’t have t' be. I’ll call the kid who works in the office when he gets in an’ let him know I won’t be. Almost everybody else will be at Haven anyway. Biggest contract I’ve got at the moment. They know where t’ find me if somethin’ goes sideways.” And they're competent enough to handle anything short of a war kicking off in New York City for a few hours.
He drank some of the coffee. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t something he would recommend to anyone else. ”Any thoughts on what y’d like t’ do?”
The Law Enforcement Officer's Expo in Brooklyn, Rianne had managed to swing getting her ESU to get her in while not having her sit at a booth all day. She was free to move about the Expo Center and see if there was anything worth bringing back with her.
This meant no uniform. Instead she wore a lacy empire style tank top with some loose pleats a wide leather belt, slim cut jeans tucked into her Tony Lama boots, and a jacket since she'd been down this road before and knew they keep this convention cold inside.
A stop by the Axon booth. Tasers were still the same, Axon was all about body cams and cloud storage now. She checked out a few firearm manufacturers' booths. Smith and Wesson were showing off their new M&P M2.0s. They had the classic M&P line and the M&P Shield line, but were really wanting to talk about the M2.0. She still preferred her SIG, sure the grip was big, but there was just something about the weight of metal in your hand and a hammer you can see moving. This led her to the SIG booth, the new P320 or as the military now called it, the M17 was prominently placed alongside their Legion series guns.
There were other booths too. Some of the larger departments from across the country were there showing off new tactics they had come up with for various situations. NYPD of course had a booth, LAPD, APD from Austin PD, Chicago PD, etc. Rianne stopped by several of those and spoke to the officers there. Most of them seemed to be squared away, she'd have to come back again later.
For now she was making her way to a ware fountain. All morning moving around makes a girl thirsty. Who she found at the water fountain was interesting. Trace, the butt-fairy from SUPER. He was leaning over the water fountain splashing water in his face.
Strolling up behind Trace she wound up and slapped him on his rump. She then didn't want him to be confused and think it was just anyone slapping him there, she announced herself, "Howdy, butt-fairy!" She didn't say it loud, just excitedly.
Thankfully for him, no one else was around to hear Rianne.

The Ranger grinned. Noel saying that meant he must be doing something right. What was even better is he wasn't having to be fake to do it. Though, one could not be fake and be a successful lady killer with Noel.
Noel then moved her head so they were face to face and said that what he'd said was, "a real ovary exploder." That was a new one. And he couldn't just say things like that?
"If I can't say that I could always lie, but somehow I think y'd know."
"Let's dance until they kick us out." Noel said grinning.
The Ranger grinned back, "That I can do." And at that moment it was all he wanted to do.
As the night became morning, and the morning became late morning, the crowd came and went a few times. It was the city that never sleeps after all. While they stayed dancing and carrying on, the Ranger also had the chance to give Noel a crash course in country-western waltz and polka dancing. They even played Copperhead Road by Steve Earl, so Ranger taught her the line dance to it. They even played Cotton Eye Joe as performed by Rednex, again he taught Noel the line dance.
At one point the DJ announced the next song was, "for the ladies," and that the following song was, "also for the ladies." The Ranger commented that, "It's country, it's all for the ladies."
Finally the last song was played Feet Don't Touch the Ground by Stoney LaRue. The DJ dedicated it to, "The couple who have been here all night dancing like there's nothing else in the world." A slow song to end the night on. And in the one of the choruses the Ranger couldn't help himself. Spin Noel out, two spins back, spin himself, spin Noel again, then back to dancing. And one last spin as the song ended catching her in a hug on the return as the lights came up.
The night could not have been any better. He'd danced with Noel all night and morning and now he stood there holding her at the end of the night. He didn't want to move, to return to Haven. For the night to end.
A grasp for something to not let the night end, "Tacos?"
Sweet, sugary, and kick like a horse? Not normally what Rianne would go with, but Cait was all about it. So why not? "Oh, Mai Tai's! Yes, not a usual drink for me but you're right, they'll go perfect after than performance." Cait placed the order and Rianne had the bartender put them on her tab.
Rianne grabbed her drink and took a sip. Sugary was right. Normally a beer, whiskey, and tequila girl she didn't go in too often for rum. It was delicious though. Cait clearly had good taste. Rianne took another sip and almost snorted Mai Tai out her nose when Cait next spoke.
"...unless you were just pleased to see me."
It took Rianne a moment to recover. Finally controlling her laughing she said, "You do get a girl all excited sayin' they're the one that you want." She suppressed some more laughter. "But I'm afraid it was just my off duty carry. Even when off duty I can't help myself from being the sheepdog." Then as an afterthought, "It didn't dig in too bad did it?"

"Does that mean tonight's over?"
The Ranger hoped not. The crowd was thinning out, but he had no desire to leave. Even if it was just him and Noel it would be fine. Scratch that, if it was just them it would be better than fine.
"Can we keep going?"
"They'll have t' throw us out." Something far more likely down where was from where dance halls closed down at 0200. Here in New York City they didn't have to close down until 0400. Which seemed too early to him at that moment. ”I’m not ready f’r tonight t’ be over. Not ready t' stop dancin' with you.”
The best part was not that he was dancing with Noel, but that she wanted to keep dancing. He would stay there and dance as long as she wanted. Hell, he’d fire up the radio and dance in the parking lot after if she wanted.

"Of course not. Jus' the nice ones."
And they danced. The Ranger carrying on about how Nashville had given the world country music and then done everything in its power to destroy it and replace it with some polished pop country crap. From there they carried, the Ranger no longer counting the steps for Noel.
Noel was thrown in and swam. Over the course of several songs she was successful. Noel was two-stepping. And what's more she was two-stepping with the Ranger. No longer worrying about keeping verbal track of the beat he was able to simply enjoy the music and even more so, the company.
Blessedly the songs were transitioning from the streak of Nashville songs to the less refined styles like Outlaw, Red Dirt, and Texas country. Eventually, Where the Gringos Don't Go by Roger Creager came on. It was a song that lend itself to two stepping in an almost slow dancing manner.
While they danced Noel thanked the Ranger and brought her head forehead against his shoulder. "Just. Yeah. Glad I didn't chicken out, I guess."
"I'm glad y' didn' chicken out, too." He steered them out of the way of a some other dancers who were working the circuit a little faster than them. Off to one of the corners to just circle. He touched his chin to her head and said,"I've really enjoyed bein' with y' tonight."
Cait had said she could do it. And to her credit, she managed to support Rianne for the remainder of the song. Rianne could tell it was a bit of a struggle though. Props to Cait. While the two women were close in size, Rianne was mostly muscle.
”I honestly think that was the best karaoke song I’ve ever been a part of!”
After how well that last song went, and the very positive audience reaction, Rianne was practically bouncing. It was very infrequent that she was able to just let loose and have a good time like that. It was a great change of pace. Sure she would unwind after work or on weekends, and often that meant dancing, but it was not normally so over the top.
Fruity cocktails were not normally her choice, but she couldn’t argue with Cait’s thoughts on the atmosphere. ”Yes. You pick I pay?” Outside of margaritas Rianne wasn’t a big consumer of fruity drinks. Cait seemed the type to know what was good though.

“Oh. That’s lucky for you that I could fit you in my busy schedule.”
Noel’s got jokes.
”Lucky for me that you didn’t have anything better to do.”
”I’m honored y’ were able t’ squeeze me in between boot heists.” He laughed. ”An’ I’ve been lookin’ forward t’ this f’r days.” He had made sure nothing could move it from his calendar.
The Ranger gave Noel a few measures to try to feel the beat. Into the song they went. Step, together, step, step. The Ranger could only take it so long, he had to make his feelings on the song known. ”Nashville…” He said, his tone indicating an incredibly solid dislike as he shook his head. Then it was back to the narration.

Step, together, step step. Step, together, step, collision. The Ranger had carried on as usual, Noel had not. It was nothing major, the Ranger was ready to just keep on going. Noel at this point decided to stop staring at her feet. This was good, and not just because it is a weird posture to dance with and she would be able to follow his eyes to have an idea where they would be going.
He’d rather be able to look at her face than the top of her head. It was a rather pretty face.
Now that Noel was looking up she’d seen him smiling at her. She asked, “What?” and smiled herself.
”Nothin’.” He said. Then because he knew she could state that little lie he continued. ”I’m jus’ happy to be here dancin’ with you.”
And then the song was ending. The Ranger gave a brief explanation. ”At the end of a dance, the way t’ say thank y’ to y’r partner is by spinnin’ them.” He could get into the proper way to do spins later. For now he just raised his left hand and indicated which way to spin with his other hand pressing against Noel’s back. A spin out, a spin back. No need to be fancy.
The next song made Ranger groan a little. Play it Again by Luke Bryan. It would serve for dancing, but the Luke Bryan was a polished pop product of the Nashville machine of country music destruction.
The first time they’d danced it was mostly smooth sailing. This time it was a little rough. Like an unpaved road. Before they cleared the trees to even start. Noel went forward instead of backward. ”It’s alright Everybody starts like this an we’ve got all night t’ practice.” The next ‘one’ that rolled around he started again. Step, together, step, step.
As they danced the Ranger could feel the tension Noel was holding. She was stiff in both stature and movement. Before he could tell her to relax she misstepped and his foot slid right into hers. He had a sense that she would slip soon and he managed to only knock her foot around a little.
”Try an’ relax, y’’ll get it. Tensin’ up jus’ makes it harder.” And then back into it. The Ranger narrating the steps on beat. Soon the song would change again which would mean a change in the beat. With any luck it would be still be 4/4 and a similar speed. Noel needed to have a grasp on two-stepping before he threw in a country-western waltz or polka. He would have to teach her to spin soon though, when the song ended.
Worst case he slipped the DJ some cash to keep the music rolling like he needed it.
