The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Well, unfortunately you still have yet to meet someone that is really from New York." Jacen replied with a slight grin. The door had firmly shut on his two fellow police officers and now he was completely comfortable in the young woman's presence once more. Heck, in one way it was even kind of nice to get a chance to talk to other mutants. A chance to show just how normal mutants could really be.
"I grew up in Florida actually. I was part of the school swimming team and grew up pretty normally for the most part. Nowhere near as interesting as living in a convent I'm sure." Jacen was not a devout Catholic. Honestly he wasn't a devout anything and he didn't even really know if he believed in a god. For the most part he just didn't think about it and that was the way he liked it. Honestly, it was a scary thought no matter what the answer was when it came to some god.
"I moved to New York after a stint working over seas. Nothing glamerous but it paid the bills." He was proud of his time in the military but sometimes that scared off people. Even though most Americans respected the military they were often over-awed and sometimes even afraid when they encountered soldiers that had actually faced life or death situations in combat. "I joined the police department soon after moving here. I was here during the Registration fiasco but I was actually sent to Washington D.C. to participate in some training exercising during most of it."
Even for someone that had never been in the camps, Jacen didn't like to remember the images he had seen. It hadn't been a pretty sight for anyone that wasn't actually insane. "And to be quite honest, I only discovered I was... special a few weeks ago. Up until then I just lived life like any other normal guy."
Taking another sip of his coffee Jacen idly scanned the room, taking in the other people that were sitting nearby. It was kind of odd to think that only a few minutes before Kealey had been feeling the emotions of everyone in this room. How did someone handle that? It was quite possible to be in a room where one person was feeling hate, another person joy, another fear, and possibly even lust. How could a person's mind handle so many conflicting emotions all at once?
"How do you handle it?" Jacen asked as he turned his gaze back to Kealey, "How do you deal with so many emotions at once?"
So in very short order Jacen had found out quite a bit of information about the young woman that currently sat across from him. He had to wonder if she was normally this free and open with strangers but if she was used to sending other people's emotions then it made sense she might treat him different than she treated other people. Maybe she was being more open with him than she was with others and then again maybe she was just young and innocent. There was really no way to tell.
"No, I guess they don't normally need to put librarians on call." Jacen responded with a slight chuckle. He could actually feel himself beginning to relax a little bit as the officers that had entered a few moments before took their coffees and turns around, heading back for the door without even glancing around. He was in the clear! They hadn't seen him and they weren't going to think he might be a mutant. YES!
"Are you from Ireland?" Even though New York City was probably one of the biggest melting pots in all of america, it was still interesting to meet someone from another country. Jacen had spent plenty of time out of the states but all of that had been combat related so he'd never made it into Europe. Ireland had always sounded like an interesting place to visit and here he was talking to someone that was from Ireland. Go figure. "Thankfully we don't get weather like this to often. A few days a year but that's about it. But, tell me about Ireland. What's the weather like? The food any good? Why'd you decide to leave?"
It was rapid fire questioning but for the moment that was how Jacen felt most comfortable. Besides, if you asked the questions fast enough a person might not realize they were giving out personal information, like why they moved away from someplace, until after they'd already said it.
The S.W.A.T. officer was continually drifting back and forth in the realm that was between consciousness and unconsciousness. He knew that he and Lily had been thrown out of a vehicle and were now being attended by physicians. He wasn't sure what was being said but they were checking him over with a thoroughness that would have made anyone proud. The scent of cigarette smoke lingered in one of the attendant's coats but Jacen was willing to over look that little fact if they just took good care of Lily.
"The giant and the cat!" The thought slammed into Jacen's brain like a sledgehammer as he finally drifted close enough to consciousness that his memory came back. A moment later he, as well as his blond um-friend had been placed on separate gurneys and were being wheeled inside.
"Get this guy on an IV and see about getting those scratches and the gouge in his arm patched up." One of the doctors instructed several nurses as Jacen was lifted off of the gurney and onto one of the emergency room beds, "We're taking the girl back for an MRI. Also draw some blood and run all the basic tests just to be on the safe side. I'll call the police and notify them of the drop off. I'm sure they'll have questions."
"ID... am a cop." Jacen murmured though none of the nurses or doctors seemed to hear what he was saying over the noise of the emergency room, "Lily... where's Lily?" He could hear the sound of Lily's gurney dissapearing off in the distance and he honestly had no idea where they were taking here. Everything had gone wrong. They had been supposed to have an evening of enjoyment and instead they were in the hospital. Jacen was supposed to protect Lily and instead she was unconscious. Would the doctors realize Lily was a mutant? Would that affect how they treated her?
Jacen fell silent, not even bothering to try and say anything as he once again realized how different things might be because of his mutation. He had to protect Lily and right now that meant staying silent. Maybe when she got back from wherever they had taken her he could do something but not until then. "Rest." He thought to himself as he felt the prick of an IV going into his right arm followed a few minutes later by the prick of a needle going into his left arm to draw blood, "Just rest."
The cat was back and somehow Jacen knew that she wasn't going to be as friendly this time. As she reached over to grab Lily, the man reared back to take a swing at the cat when a slight bump in the road suddenly threw him back into his seat again. Even if his muscles were starting to work again his sense of balance was deffinately not back to full working order.
"No!" Jacen gritted out, his voice sounding dry and hoarse as he watched the feline throw his blonde friend out of the vehicle. "Pay kitty... you'll pay!" He gasped out as the cat grabbed him, easily overpowering any struggle he might have wanted to put up. Without the slightest effort she tossed him out of the vehicle as well, right on top of the blonde beauty.
Jacen tried to keep from landing with all of his weight on Lily and so he braced himself with his arms as best he could. Obviously at least some of his weight hit the young woman but he was able to shield her at least a little.
"Giant... cat... pay... both... pay." Jacen muttered incoherantly as the darkness of unconsciousness continued to swirl just at the edge of his vision. He couldn't pass out now! Lily needed him!
It was a strange feeling as Jacen hovered somewhere between unconsciousness and full consciousness. The electricity combined with his other injuries had really done a number on him but it hadn't completely knocked him out. In fact, if he had been capable of coherent thought right at that moment he would have been wishing that he was unconscious so he wouldn't have to be feeling the pain that coursed through his body.
As he lay flopped in one of the rear passenger seats Jacen could feel himself beginning to once again regain control of his body. He could hear the giant and the cat talking back and forth but it was more like an annoying background buzz than anything he should actually pay attention to.
"...two love birds ... safe..."
The blood continued to ooze down over his chest as well as his right arm from where Miss Kitty's claws had done their work. On the upside the electricity in the water had combined with his body's natural clotting to mostly seal off the wounds. Sure he was bleeding but he wasn't going to bleed to death.
"...soak ... shocky..."
So, apparently it was the feline's idea to use the water again Lily. Jacen should have figured that out sooner. Cats were notorious masterminds and it only made sense that Miss Kitty woudl be the one in charge of this little operation. In fact she'd probably set it up from the beginning. A little bit of ipecac could have caused Brickson's vomiting and then the cat immediately stepped in to egg things on by asking for her ball back. That had to be it. The cat was the mastermind!
Flexing his muscles ever so slightly Jacen inwardly winced against the pain. After the electric shock they were still extremely stiff and more than likely they even had some internal burns on them. It was going to take time to heal but if Jacen could find an opportunity to escape he would fight through the pain in order to rescue Lily from their captors. Even injured Jacen was still a hero at heart. Cracking his eyes open the S.W.A.T. officer located Lily's hand and then with supreme effort reached over to grab a hold of it and give it a quick squeeze. He didn't trust his voice but he could still communicate in some fashion.
"A day on call." Jacen replied with a slight grin, doing his best to focus on the young woman in front of him while ignoring the other officers. If they saw him busy in conversation with someone they might leave him alone which would keep him under the radar as a mutant for a little longer. "No... I'm not a mutant. I'm just a person."
"When the weather is this bad a lot of times they'll put all of the officers on notice in case they have to call us in. I'm on notice so I figured I should grab a sandwich and coffee just on the off chance they call me in." Idle conversation was good. Idle conversation was safe. If they could just stay on these kinds of topics he might even be able to enjoy this little chat. "When you're on duty you never know when you'll get a chance to grab some food."
Reaching over the police officer grabbed his coffee cup and took a sip, checking on the other two officers with his peripheral vision. They were finally ordering their own coffees but it looked like they were ordering to go. That was a blessing. Once they left Jacen would once again be safe... at least temporarily.
"So what brings you out in this weather Kealey? Obviously you're not on call with the police department."
The slight Irish brogue of the woman's words made him want to trust her. It made him want to relax his guard at least enough to be friendly but Jacen still wasn't comfortable with this part of his life being on display. If he was a mutant, and he sure as well wasn't admitting it, then he just wanted privacy. If people didn't bother him then he wouldn't bother them. That was a fair deal wasn't it?
"Yeah... go ahead." He spoke quietly after a few moments of just staring at the woman. Slowly leaning back in his chair he dropped his eyes and focused on eating his sandwich. Was he hungry? Not really but it was something he could do that would mean he could ignore the woman that sat there. Maybe if he was quiet long enough she'd leave on her own. Maybe she'd let him get back to his peace.
In a few minutes all that was left of the sandwich was a few crumbs on the plate. Taking a sip of his coffee Jacen opened the book and return to reading. Maybe Sherlock Holmes had been a mutant. That would explain why he noticed so many things that his fellow humans missed. Maybe it really was something more than just good training maybe it had been a gift. And if that were true, then was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle a mutant to have the wisdom to write about something like this? How many famous people over the centuries were really mutants that just tried to fit in. How many miraculous things had happened because someone's genetics were just a little screwy?
The bell to the front door jingled and automatically Jacen glanced up only to freeze. Two of the guys from his S.W.A.T. team had just walked in and even though they hadn't noticed him yet it was only a matter of time. "Shit!" He swore in his mind as he tried to figure out what to do.
"The name's Jacen King by the way." He suddenly spoke up to his table companion as his eyes dropped back to the book in front of him, "What's yours?"
Looking at the young woman, Jacen waited for her to give her response. He had been feeling relatively comfortable in his brown work boots, denim jeans, and long sleeve burgundy dress shirt with the top two buttons undone to reveal the white t-shirt beneath. Had been comfortable with had being the operative word. When this woman approached it was as though a cold chill came over him.
"I can't be a mutant... can't be! Why do people keep doing this to me?" Thoughts ran through the man's mind as he fought off the urge to grab the leather jacket off the back of his chair and once again slip it on.
"I do feel emotion if that's what you mean." Jacen replied with raised eyebrow, doing his best to tamp down the panic that was threatening to well up within him. Other cops sometimes came to this coffee shop and if one of them heard that he was a mutant then noone would be willing to work with him. He'd be an outcast until he quit or retired.
Apparently right then the young woman decided to demonstrate her power and she began to look around the room. But with each person as she focused on them, her eyes seemed to widen in panic. It was an outward panic that reflected the inward battle that Jacen was no fighting.
"Look, I'm... I'm a mutant. Just like you." Jacen hissed quietly as he leaned across the table, keeping his voice low so that only she would over hear, "And that's what happens. I stop other mutants. I don't have any control and I don't even know when it happens. I'm just like anybody else you might meet on the street. No special senses I just stop other mutants powers."
Why did this have to be happening to him? He had some semblence of a normal life and yet now people kept getting thrown in his circle that were screwing up that life! He wasn't a mutant! Unless he was with his blond um-friend, he would never ever admit that he was a mutant. It just wasn't allowable for someone like him!
The Hound Of The Baskervilles was a classic piece of fiction that showed Sherlock Holmes at his finest. From sending Watson to do the first bit of investigating which he ultimately failed at to searching the house and bog all by himself Sherlock once proved that he was one of the most brilliant literary detectives. Which realy meant that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the real genius. He thought of clues and possibilities that most people would never even consider.
Sipping at his coffee, Jacen ignored his sandwich for the moment, determined to get through another page or two before he gave into the temtation that was slowly cooling on the plate beside him. He had read this book multiple times but each time he read it he found something new and intriguing. Details that he might have missed in previous reads lept off the page to inspire him to be an even better cop.
Suddenly Jacen realized he wasn't alone. Lifting his gaze he found himself locking in on a pair of piercing blue eyes that were staring at him as though they could see to the very depths of his soul. Who was this? A fortune teller or someone? A person that would perhaps guide him along the road of destiny?
"I....I can't feel you."
Or not. Apparently it was just yet one more foreign woman that was just a mite strange. And what did she mean by feeling him? Was she trying to turn a trick or something?
"Please tell me you're real and I'm not going even more crazy."
Jacen slowly leaned back in his chair, closing the book with one finger held between the pages to keep his spot for when he could go back to the book. "I'm quite real but as to whether you're going more crazy or not you'd have to ask a psychiatrist. I'm just a cop. Nothing special or fantastic so I really can't answer your question."
Reaching his free hand over the cop picked half of his sandwich and took a bite, chewing thoughtfully as he looked at the young woman.
"What do you mean you can't feel me?" He finally asked after swallowing that first bite, "Last time I checked you never even touched me."
The weather was dismal and Jacen King was not in a good mood. This was the kind of day that just made a person want to curse at mother nature. Why in the world couldn't she make up her mind? Was it snowing? No. Was it raining? No. It was sleeting. This was that miserable time when things were completely frozen but they sure weren't liquid either. Even New York drivers struggled in this type of weather and Jacen was just waiting for his cell phone to ring as the understaffed police force called in even S.W.A.T. team members to help take care of traffic snarles and accident reports.
After parking his truck Jacen walked under the cloudy sky, the collar of his black leather jacket turned up against the wind and cold as he just tried to make it to the one place of refuge he had at the moment. A little out of the way coffee shop known simply as 'Caffeine'. It was just a block or two away from Times Square, far enough off of the beaten path that they weren't mobbed but yet close enough that they were slowly rising in popularity. It was one of the few places that wasn't a national chain yet still knew how to brew a decent cup of coffee. Combine that with the free internet access and they were a dream haven away from the world for at least a few moments.
Stepping through the door Jacen slipped off his jacket, immediately appreciating the warmth of the room. Here he would have an opportunity to be out of the house but still relatively close to work if a call came through. Slipping a battered sherlock holmes paperback out of his jacket pocket the S.W.A.T. officer walked up to the counter to place his very simple order.
"One large black coffee please."
"Would you care for a pastry or sandwich to go with that today?"
"Uh... pressed ham and cheese would be great." Jacen replied after a moment of thought. If he did get the call out to work there was no telling when he might get a chance to eat so it was a good idea to at least nibble on something now. He could always throw it in the truck to eat during some moment of quiet later in the day should it be necessary.
A few moments later, after retrieving both his coffee and the ceramic plate with his steaming sandwich on it, Jacen wandered over to a table near the window. It was always easier to appreciate the interior warmth when you could still see the outside misery.
Fighting with a cat was like nothing Jacen had ever experienced. He had faced trained soldiers in combat but he'd never had to fight someone that had the strength, agility, and habbit of a cat. As the claws first began to dig into his bicep the man automatically flexed his muscle, hissing in pain as the sharp points dug into his arm. This was the reason he hated cats dogs were loyal and easy to controle but cats were just to damn independant!
"Bitch!" Jacen swore as the cats feet pressed against his chest, shredding through his shirt and lancing into the skin, "Go back to the pound!" Jumping with as much strength as he could muster, Jacen gritted his teeth against the pain just as a stream of water slammed into the cat and pushed her away from him. Her paws were still flexed convulsively and as he turned away from her he caught a glimps of flesh still gripped tightly in the claws of her hands.
Blood was flowing freely from where the chunks of skin and muscle had been torn from Jacen's arm and the scratches on his chest were bleeding and further damaging his already ruined shirt. It took only a moment for him to take in the situation. Giant boy had decided to quit playing nice and so he had decided to go for the low blow and hit Lily with water. After having seen the slight sparking she got from damp hair Jacen knew that this could easily be deadly for the young woman if he didn't intervene. For the moment Jacen was protected by the rubber soles and leather tops of his shoes but if he didn't act quickly the leather would become soaked or the water would go over the top of his shoes. Speed was of the essence if either of them were to survive the night.
Breaking into a run, Jacen charged the blond woman, momentarily ignoring the giant as he focused on trying to save his... whatever. "What is she to me?" The thought suddenly slammed into his mind out of the blue as his feet pounded into the water, splashing it up onto his chest and pants, "An aquaintance? Friend? Lover? What?" Right then he felt the first bits of electricity slam into his body as the water finally found entrance through his shoes and onto his bare skin. Stiffening immediately all of Jacen's muscles locked and fell forward, unintentionally diving and closing the distance to Lily. As his muscles contracted from the electricity Jacen discovered that thinking was really over rated.
The punch was perfect but as Jacen lashed out with the kick he found himself momentarily distracted. Lily was in trouble and it looked like an innocent bystander was in trouble to. With a sinking heart he realized that if something didn't happen really soon then there were going to be injuries and possibly even a couple of fatalities.
His momentary distraction combined with the feline's speed made for an extremely bad situation. She caught his leg without the slightest hesitation and quickly closed the distance, knocking one leg out from underneath him at the same time she slammed an elbow into his ribs.
“A need to land on ones feet is a need to be entirely too predictable.” The cat's voice had a distinctly smug tone to it as she sent the human down to land heavily on his back. Though a few seconds before Jacen had been torn about what he needed to handle, his mind had suddenly narrowed and focused down to this moment. Emotion and affection had no place in combat and when you faced your enemy there could be no distraction. Jacen's training as a soldier was suddenly back to the forefront of his mind and the cat was the only target that mattered at the moment. Once she was down he could go help his fellow soldiers but not until this enemy was taken care of.
Forcing his lungs to inflate as he ignored the pain that rippled through him with each breath, the man's eyes narrowed down to dangerous slits. Swinging his one free leg in a powerful sweep he moved to knock the feline's legs out from under her. If she kept hold of his leg he would roll with it as she fell and try to get on top of her. If she let go of it he'd roll away, get back to his feet and then try to move in and attack while she was still down. She was the enemy and that meant she had to be taken out. No ifs, and, or buts.
The stars were out in force this February 13th as all of New York City's finest celebrities gathered at the "Humante Treatment For Mutants & Humans Alike" Valentine's Eve Ball. Everyone came out to show their support for an organization that reaches out to help the suffering and poverty that plagues both human and mutant alike.
Those present included national celebrities like Donald Trump, local celebrities such as playboy Luke Jacobs and heiress Jaxon Kane, as well as mutant celebrities like playboy Cold Steel and of course no one could miss the infamous Isabel Duskmoor.
If an event like this ball, supporting such a wonderful charity organization could unite so many different individuals then perhaps down the road mutants and humans that were once bitter rivals could set aside their difference and join in peace for the greater good. I leave you with that hopeful thought.
Kitty Cat was fast. Jacen wasn't sure if he would label her as having super speed but she was deffinately at the upper limits of human ability and fast than anyone he had met before.
Kitty Cat was strong. With a grunt of pain he fell backward as she slammed her shoulder into his stomach. He had tensed his muscles in time to keep from completely losing his breath but it was still a forceful blow. They hit the cement and rolled but just as he was beginning to get up a fist came out of nowhere, slamming into his jaw.
Kitty Cat was REALLY fast. His neck muscles had allowed him head to give with the punch so that she hadn't delivered a knockout blow but Jacen was still blinking, trying to clear away the stars and black spots that were trying to cloud his vision. Shaking his head quickly, Jacen scrambled back up to his feet, taking up a defensive stance as he stared down the cat... or least, one of the cats. When did she develop a twin? And they were conjoined at the hip?
“… Don’t call me kitty cat, Sweetums.”
So Miss Kitty Cat had a raw nerve... perfect. Blinking quickly Jacen was relieved as the two cats melded back together into one figure. At least now he had a real target to be facing instead of, whatever else he'd been seeing a few moments before. Slowly moving his jaw back and forth to make sure there was no permanent damage his eyes narrowed slightly, doing their best to ignore the black spots that still swam around at the edge of his vision.
"I thought that kitty cats always landed on their feet." He observed quietly, completely oblivious to the fight that was raging between giant man and electro girl, "You bring shame on your whole species."
Moving forward quickly, or at least quickly for a human, Jacen led with a speedy left jab toward her eye before bringing his right leg around in a powerful roundhouse kick aimed at her side. If she really was as fast as he'd seen a moment before and it wasn't just a fluke then the fight was already over. There was no way he could combat that kind of power but he was sure as hell going to try. Kitty Cat had started it but, if he had anything to say about it, Jacen King was going to finish it!
Jacen stumbled back against one of the pool tables as his mind tried to process the fact that his left arm was numb. He couldn't feel anything as the arm hung at his side like a lifeless piece of flesh. What had he said? All he'd done was ask for an explanation and then that b**** of a cat decided to attack him?
Reaching over with his right hand Jacen began to massage at the muscle, trying to stimulate the blood flow and get his strength back. Lily needed him... she needed help. The arm was beginning to tingle and with great effort he was able to curl his fingers into a fist. It wasn't great but it would have to do for now. Hopefully it would be enough.
Reaching over Jacen grabbed a black eight ball and gripped it tightly in his right hand before breaking into a jog after the three individuals that were heading for the door. It really was amazing just how hard a pool ball was and how much damage it could do to an individual when used correctly.
Stepping outside Jacen found himself looking at the three figures. Big boy was stepping away from where he had apparently dropped Lily while Miss Kitty was beginning to close in on the petite blond. "Ten feet... I've got ten feet." The S.W.A.T. officer thought to himself as he closed in on the cat so that his field would once again touch her. Winding up, Jacen let loose with as strong a throw as he could muster from this point blank range, right toward the back of the feline's head.
"Next time don't provoke someone that'll fight back Kitty Cat!" He barked out seconds after releasing the eight ball. Fair was fair... kitty cat had pegged Lily in the back of the head so why couldn't he return the favor?
