The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

She chuckled at him, stretched out beside her husband with her arms propping her up. "I'd give myself a few months before lacks of human contact started to get to me." She was the antisocial one of their marriage, after all. "We should come here every year. Make it our anniversary spot."
He mentioned houses and she whipped her phone up out of nowhere and had about a dozen real estate tabs open on her browser. She grinned guiltily as she draped herself partly over his chest so she could show him some of the houses she had been looking at. If he had a sharp eye, he would notice that most of them were fairly expensive.
"Already been lookin' love."
She tapped away a bit more while he asked her about her finances. In an offhanded kind of way, she pursed her lips, scrolled through her phone to her bank app, and opened.
"I had to pay off my student loans and a few other things, but I've still got a good about. About two hundred and fifty thousand give or take a bit after bills." She returned to scrolling through houses and names of real estate agents without a second thought about the money. She had always been decent at saving instead of splurging.
"He asks the pregnant woman if she wants to eat. ha!" Of course, she did. Incubating a human was hard.
They drove around hitting up attractions and places to eat like a ball in a pinball machine. When they hit the coast they stopped by Risney Land, because you can't just drive past the place of magic and dreams. She wasn't able to safely get on any of the rides, but that didn't stop her from wearing a dog-eared hat and snapping pictures with the friendly red shorts wearing dog mascot.
They stayed in a pirate themed room, which gave her flashbacks to pirate monkeys, but Saph helped distract her from the heebyjeebies well enough with a skimpy pirate costume and an eyepatch. She had to say, he didn't look half bad with long dreadlocked hair.
They headed out the next day with gifts galore. Shelby had convinced him to buy a hat for Elke, mostly because imagining the brooding teen sulking in it made her laugh.
The drive up to the Golden Gate Bridge was long but relaxing with just the two of them. She drove half the time, five miles under the speed limit and in the right lane and switched whenever Saph aggravated her by picking at her driving.
Parking and walking out onto the bridge was a breeze. It was a nice day too. Beautiful view in pretty much every direction. She snapped a few pictures of them there, shared a long kiss, and then led the charge to waddle back toward the car. She needed to pee!
The drive from there up the coast was also beautiful. She was more familiar with the area the closer they got to Washington, so she pointed out various places to stop.
When they hit the very tip of Oregon, she wanted to stop in a little fishing town. The population was hovering somewhere around 700, and pretty much everyone they encountered seemed to be in their 60's at the very least. It was pretty though surrounded on all sides tall dense tree growth. The town was settled in the nook between two mountains. It had two gas stations and one main grocery store.
She loved this particular town because of the atmosphere. Mist rolled through the higher trees and clung to the beaches. Even when it was sunny it was cool and breezy.
She dragged him to a secluded beach, clad in suits and with a large towel and sunhat on her head. The sand was literally packed with sand dollars that crunched underfoot. Gulls and crows skulked close to the water on the hunt and farther down the beach on an old abandoned dock a pack of seals were napping the in sun. She wanted to find a place close to the water, but far enough away to avoid the birds.
The artist blushed brightly at being called a "beautiful wife" for the first time in her life. It was strange... it didn't feel any different, and yet it did. A silly title and a few signatures on a piece of paper left her feeling giddy and settled.
"Wanna hit up the west coast before we head back? SanFran has a crazy bridge to see and some of the best food in the country." She fiddled with their hands until her fingers were comfortable. "We could head down through Los Angeles, up through Cali and Oregon. Some of the best scenic routes on that drive. Maybe hit up my home state and we can stop by Seattle!"
She bounced a little, looking over at him and experiencing a moment of reflection. The first time she had spoken to this man had been in a car. He'd hotwired it in order for them to go off and try to save her roommate. She remembered how awkwardly he had tried to comfort her at first, and how sincere he had been after.
"... I really love you, you know. You're the most amazing person I think I have ever met."
If he hazarded a glance her way, he'd see the warm expression in her eyes. A soft smile on her face as she squeezed his hand.
"We can go anywhere, do anything, and I'll have a blast."
They got to a little-themed chappel where costumed villains greeted them. Shelby was given a blue and white costume with an eye wrap and a cape. Saph was decked out in purple and black. Tights didn't look all that different from spandex. Colin got roped into being a sidekick, though the green and red costume didn't quite fit him.
They said their short pre-prepared vows with a hunched retired superhero hovering a few feet off the ground between them, with giant neon POW and BLAM signs hanging in the background.
A cringe-worthy memorial photo was taken with Hombre Fantastico trying to jokingly kiss the groom. Shelby laughed herself to tears the whole way until their next destination while changing her Bookface profile picture to their new wedding photo.
She had splurged on a hotel in Vegas for the both of them. The place wasn't even that expensive, but she had made sure to nab them the room with a view and a very comfortable bed.
Her dad spent one more day with them hitting up all of the casinos within walking distance, before catching a flight home... and then they were by themselves. Their official honeymoon commenced. She treated him like a king the first night with something special she had planned and room service so they wouldn't have to set a single toe outside. The next day she left it for him to decide what to do and simply followed along happy, intentionaly accidentally showing off her ring to pretty much anyone with working eyes.
They had the rest of the week at their disposal. They could do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. All the time in the world.
"It already is." She tilted her head back to look up at him. "It can only get better from here."
A while later they landed, and it was onto the next destination. Colin spent the rest of the drive red-faced and grumpy from Saph harassing him about his fear of heights. Shelby kicked off their third karaoke rendition when 'Sand Man' rotate back through the playlist, as they headed through San Bernardino toward a very popular Scenic drive. The 'Rim of the world' highway. They stopped for gas and picnic food a ways back, so when they inevitably found a good spot to pull over she broke a blanket and the food out.
Lunch was almost over, with her and Colin deep in an argument about what elevation they were currently sitting at when an uninvited guest lumbered out of the woods toward their food. Shelby just about wet herself at the sight of a huge brown bear, scrambling for cover behind her superhero fiance. The animal padded closer, before stopping a few feet away and planting its giant butt on the ground. Beady brown eyes glanced from one face to another.
"Hey!" Its jaw opened slightly, and a voice came out. The bear waved a large, clawed paw. "How you all doin', ay? Don't get a lot of tourists who stop for long." It had a Canadian accent. Shelby stared at it incredulously from her safety spot.
A big black nose took a few long sniffs from the air. "Is that apple pie? Can I have a slice?"
When the bear fiasco resolved itself, they were back on the road. The net destination was Vegas, after five days of traveling across the states. Shelby left Saph to drive, while Colin snored away in the back.
"So you wanna do an Elvis wedding, or a classic priest one?" She paused for a second, pondering. I think there may be a superhero here that's technically a minister. 'Hombre Fantastico'!" She giggled at the pictures of the yellow, spandex wearing hero on her phone.
Demons. That's what they were. Her dad patted her hair while cooing about how adorable her phobia was. She kicked him for it.
They stayed in town that night. A much smaller place, but still nice. Shelby moped about not being able to use the hot tub while the men enjoyed it. Colin told horrible jokes to Saph to cheer her up. It was all good fun!
The next morning they were on their way to Springfield, which was the next suggested stop on the map. They passed cornfields and wheat fields and corn fields.
And more corn fields...
more and more corn.
Ah! Tiny gas station!
The artist stepped out to stretch her legs and pee, then grabbed snacks for everyone. The guy behind the counter had a corncob pipe and a straw hat.
Someone on the porch was playing the banjo. She laughed nervously and decided they didn't really need to stop in Springfield anyway.
New Mexico!
They were in different terrain now. Scorching temperatures, no green in sight, buzzards circling overhead. There were caves to explore, old native structures to visit, and hot air balloooons! You get one guess for which one excited her the most. Colin excused himself due to a fear of heights, leaving the lovebirds by themselves. These particular balloons you could operate yourself after a quick lesson. Before she knew it, they were up in the air.
Desert stretched out on all sides. She leaned back in Saphs arms, nestled against his chest, and took it all in.
They made it to their next destination in record time now that Saph was driving again. Ohio wasn't as fancy as DC, that was for sure... but there were still things to Marvel at.
in particular, she deemed the West Side Market worthy of some time. The place huuuuge, and packed to the brim with vendors. She dragged Saph around for a while, finding a pair of bejeweled skull sunglasses that she seriously needed in her life. Her father found a huge foam hand with #1 Grandpa emblazoned on the front.
After they finished up at the market and had lunch, it was off to the next destination. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo! Shelby was a huge fan... until she realized they held North Americas largest collection of Pirates. She spent her time in those exhibits hiding behind Saph like the coward she was, especially when a Gorilla named JoJo took an interest in her from the other side of the glass.
She laughed at him a lot for geeking out because usually, that was her racket! When her dad started trying to barter with the staff about some of his older gadgets, she saw it fit to call it a day. The found a decent little hotel along a popular route and spent the rest of the day resting by a pool and sleeping in a huge kingsize bed.
In the morning it was back onto the road with breakfast to go. Niagra falls was next on the list, and her dad was driving. She'd forced him to swear a vow of secrecy about the stop. Once they got close though, it was hard to keep it a secret any longer. After a hike from the parking lot to the viewing area, which she had to tap out of and be carried for the remainder, she headed or the railing that overlooked the falls. It was a lovely day, bright and clear. The light caught the mist curling up from below, casting rainbows across the expanse. She prepped her camera, before giving it to her dad so he could take a selfie of the three of them. Having a tall person around had its uses!
"New York is right over there!" She shouted over the roar of the falls, and pointed across the expanse.
They were going on a road trip. Technically eloping, if the shiny rings on her finger had anything to say about it.
It was Saph's first timeout of the state, and she wanted it to be special. Her dad would be coming along for the drive down and flying back up so that they could have a typical honeymoon. Five days for the trip down, two days in Vegas, and a week taking their sweet time back.
She made sure to pack all the necessities. Socks, underwear, anti-nausea tools, power cords, her camera. Sooo many pairs of yoga pants and loose half dressed to accommodate her growing belly. She helped Saph pack as well, expertly stuffing all of their gear into one large suitcase.
The day of the trip came fast and they swung by to pick up he dad from his new place. A medium sized house in a nicer area of the city. He was already establishing roots, too. Many of the locals were endeared to him already.
After she crammed her father and his bags in, they were back on the road. She'd worked with Saph to get a good playlist ready for the trip. Heck, she'd even gone out an get an actual license so she could help drive if needed... not that either of them would let her.
As they headed out of town, she found herself leaning back in her seat comfortably. One hand resting on her belly, the other on the middle console entwined with her Fiance's. Her dad in the bad, her mom's ashes in the glass heart around her neck. She felt content. It had been a long time since that feeling had crept up.
--
The first stop of the trip was Washington DC. She demanded a picture of her giving the double-bird-salute to the Congress building, and also a picture of the Lincoln Memorial... and she tried her hardest to get Saph to do something funny with Colin in it.
She was torn between going to the National Gallery of Art, or the Air and Space Museum. She ultimately chose space, because it would be more entertaining for everyone... and she wanted a goddamn picture of herself in a shuttle replica!
And, of course, she had to take Saph to the National Spy Museum.
She giggled as she buckled in and her dad wedged himself in the back. "It's a Hybrid. The engine will kick on when the battery needs to be recharged." She leaned in to poke at the display, until it showed what she was talking about.
"Use that knob to shift from park to drive, and reverse." one of his long arms pointed out the shifter just below the display. Colin was having ball with it.
Once shifted from park, the screen would light up. Reverse would show the backup cam as well as annoyingly persistent beeping, drive would show a different display.
"It's gonna be different getting used to it, but you'll see its not that different."
Colin was wiggling on his feet, hands clapping his hands 5ogether in joy at Saph's reaction. When he had attempted to give Shelby a car years earlier, her reaction had been a "No, take it back." Because she hadn't wanted to deal with all of the costs that came with car ownership.
Shelby watched Saph freak out with a little smile on her face. It was cute! He'd had that old clunker so long, keeping it running despite how it looked. It would probably be weird getting used to not having to slam the door, or jimmyrig the bumper back on.
The key fob was tossed, and father and daughter shared a laugh at saphs expense for the key comment. Colin started miming hooking his hand in the door handle, while shelby just waddled on over to show him.
"It's keyless. You just step close and go to open it, and it unlocks." She slipped her hand in and the car beeped, then unlocked. She opened the door for him to get inside.
"Keyless for driving it too. Just push the power button."
Colin danced around to the other side of the store to get in, joyous expression still in place. "Wanna take it for a spin, Birthday boy?"
Daughter and Father watched as the Crowbar was dropped into the crowbar-holster (probably the only of its kind). They shared a silent look that said a lot, mostly questions for Shelby and answers for Colin. Yes, it was normal. Not that normal, but whatever. She had weird quirks too.
Colin took his chance to step in when Saph addressed him. The towering, gentle giant stepped closer to put an arm around his soon-to-be-son-in-laws shoulders and lead him out of the room. Shelby waddling behind at their heels. "You bet I did, my boy!" The large man chuckled, "Didn't Shelby ever tell you about how I am at birthday surprises?"
"Bursting into my room at three o'clock in the morning and scaring the @#$% outta be to celebrate the exact time I was born doesn't count as amazingly awesome in my books, dad."
Her father blew a raspberry at her over his shoulder. "I knew plenty of kids who would have been ecstatic for cake and ice cream in the morning. Such a stick in the mud, Shelly."
The artist rolled her eyes. "Say, actually... I've been meaning to ask you. Who was the gene carrier in our family for mutations? I don't think you ever mentioned one."
"What? I talked about your gramma Beatrice all the time."
".... what does she have you do with this? Are you saying she was the mutant who passed the gene on?" She couldn't pin a single memory of it ever being mentioned, well... except-
"Why do you think I was always calling her a Mutant?"
Shelby blinked. "... I thought you were being mean... Now I see you were just being uncreative. Really lame, dad." He cackled as they exited the building and into a parking lot. Right at the very front say a dark grey, four-door Prirus with a giant red bow on top.
"I heard about the catastrophe with your last car, and figured this might make for a pretty decent birthday gift!" He held out a little key fob that didn't actually have any keys on it. "Happy Birthday!
"Well, guess I know why you're marrying him now." Colin chuckle, while nudging his daughter with an elbow.
"Dad, no.. oh god, no." The artist was rubbing her fingers on her temples with one hand while they waited outside the room while holding onto her present with the other.
"What? Can't a man make a joke anymore?"
She sighed and ignored him, turning back to knock and check and see if Saph was dressed yet. Once he was thy re-entered for a moment to collect him. She presented her gift to him again, albeit with an embarrassed blush on her face while her dad giggled childishly in the background.
"Happy birthday from me to you, love." When opened, he would find an item his crowbar collection currently lacked. She had found an older Firemans Crowbar, used by some New York City fire department at some point. It was in great condition after the restore, steel gleaming and fresh red paint for the few bands of color. She'd even had the various points and edges sharpened back to like new conditions. The thing was at least four feet long, and weight a good bit.
Days later, things had changed again. Thankfully for the better this time!
Why? Saph was getting old. His birthday was creeping up, and while Shelby had been planning a quieter celebration her dad had gotten wind of it. That, combined with his excitement over the baby and the closing of the Roach case, had the older soon-to-be-Grandpa going a bit overboard with gifts.
Shelby, fearing how her poor fiance would take it, had decided to fill him in on the situation lest it send him running for the hills. This. She was gently shaking him awake after a rather restful night's sleep. "Babe.. wakey wakey. I've got a birthday surprise for you." She left shortly after to get her own gift and her phone, running out of the room for but a moment.
"Alright, I'll admit you were hard to shop for, until I ran into this at an antique store and had it brightened up a little and refinished." In her hands was a long box tied with simple red ribbon and a bow. She blinked at him as she turned around.
"No promises." She quipped back, then fell silent when his phone buzzed. She waited as he checked whatever it was, inwardly hoping it didn't have anything to do with another incident.
"Shelby... She got him. Megan killed him. She said it's for good this time."
The artist blinked. "For good? What, has this happened before or something?" She paused, reflecting on what the big big had been gurgling at her before. "Wait, never mind I don't wanna know." She lapsed into silence then, expression slipping a little into an unfocused stare at nothing in particular.
Roach was dead... how did she feel about it? She wasn't sure. A mixture of a lot of things. But, she did feel like some of the tension had left her body, and she hoped it never returned.
"I think we need to get out of here... To the room? Somewhere else?"
Shelby nodded briskly. "Yes. Solid plan. Let's go to the room, order in food, and I wanna drink until I cant feel feelings anymore, then--" she paused midsentence, gaze dropping to her belly before she threw her arms up and head back dramatically.
"@#$##@%$$! Okay, revision of plan. you drink until I can't feel feelings anymore, and I'll try to drown my sorrows in chow main. Then we sleep for two solid days." She nodded, plan solidified in her head. "You're gonna have to carry me there though, because I'm sure freaking tired."
