The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

I think the two of them could have an interesting interaction. Maybe if Ryden got assigned to a news story like a rally or something Dorian happened to be at? While he primarily works on things like reviews, his boss could just be short a reporter and send him anyway?

This is Ryden. He doesn't talk much but he sure makes an impression when he does. A reporter and writer, he's got a lot to say but is usually pretty good at keeping it to himself. Needless to say, he needs some threads so if you want to have a fun conversation, he's your guy.

Ryden was on a deadline, but the silence in his apartment was driving him up the wall. After his internet decided to take a field-trip, and his internet-radio with it, he decided sitting and listening to his neighbors was going to get obnoxious. He couldn't even whistle to himself to pass the time. Last time he did that, he busted his window...
So he packed up his notebook, took to the streets, and finally found himself in the middle of central park. He chose his location carefully: No nearby street lights, no benches, no unsuspecting statues that could be caught unaware. Just a rock and trees and the notebook to keep him company. That way should a cheerful tune work it's way from his mouth, he wouldn't end looking at a bill for property damage.
He had made fairly decent progress on his article too. The review of the last play he'd seen was coming together, the descriptions he had jotted down turning into more condense and eloquent writing. He was even pleased that he manage to write it legibly this time, so typing it up wouldn't be problematic. Things seemed to be going well, and time drifted away mostly unnoticed.
Until a noise down the path brought his attention.

Character
Personality: Ryden is relatively outgoing, but for one small flaw: he doesn't talk. Ryden's mutant causes such disturbances that he avoids speaking out of concern for the consequences. Having a conversation isn't worth breaking glass or leveling bridges, although years of dealing with silence has made him somewhat distant with people and pessimistic. It always sucks to flirt with a girl and shatter her wine glass when you try to give her a compliment... Hobbies/ Interests: Ryden likes reading, and enjoys a lot of tourist attractions like a good Broadway musical. He enjoys writing in his free time, and it helps him get his thoughts out since he can't really say things out loud. He works for the newspaper, writing articles on different beats like movie reviews and restaurant reviews, but his job is solely limited to e-mail communication. Job or part time job and description: Reporter for the newspaper. Aspiring author. Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Speaking and injuring himself and others. Snakes. Special talents: Ryden is a fairly talented writer, which comes with all the practice he gets.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Neutral. Ryden doesn't know how he feels about his powers. There are times he gets frustrated with being silent and just thinks he should accept the consequences of what happens when he talks. He also considers just using his powers to his advantage like other mutants do. Talking his way into a bank vault has its appeals, but he isn't sure that's what he wants to turn into.
Mutations
Mutation description: Vocal Resonance Ryden's voice has developed the ability to find the resonant frequency of surrounding objects. When he speaks, his voice 'attaches' to something close, like a glass, or a railing, and adapts to that objects frequency, causing to to vibrate and oftentimes collapse. The louder he talks, the larger the object he resonates with. Strengths: It only takes a little talking to break something. Weaknesses and Limitations: Ryden's powers only work on inanimate objects, and are currently limited to glass and metal. He can direct them with concentration, but without it they act at random.
RANGE He only effects things within a 10 foot radius when he's speaking normally, 20 feet if he's yelling.
AMOUNT Ryden's powers only attach to one 'object' at a time. A solid window can shatter completely, but a metal object with many joints would only have one piece 'breaking'. Connected metal may be slightly effected by the vibrations, but is not directly resonated. Max size and thickness of a single object would be a bank vault door (thickness) and a 10 foot by 10 foot pane of glass.
TIMEFRAME When he starts talking, the object vibrates. If he continues for 5-30 seconds (5 for small objects, 20 seconds for larger objects, 30 for extremely thick metal) he can cause that object to bend and/or break.
OTHER Ryden's powers also have an effect on his mood. If he talks and starts causing an object to resonate, it creates a 'ringing' sensation in his own head. It's hard to focus to intentionally destroy something, and his powers are something he prefers not to use.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Ryden is fairly fit, like most New Yorkers. He can lift your average heavy object and would look good with his shirt off, which would benefit if he talked more. Fighting Style: Ryden's fighting style is to talk his way out of a fight. By, you know, talking and breaking things around him. Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Keep his mouth shut, not much to fight with.
History Of Your Character Ryden was born in Ireland, and grew up there until his parents moved to the US. At eleven, he had developed a soft Irish accent, but nothing that stood out enough as he grew older. Living in New York, he had a pretty normal childhood. He played sports, went to school, got his citizenship and enjoyed the big city...that was, until he turned 18, and leveled the bleacher section he was standing on at school during a football game. It's the last time he'll try cheering for the winning team...
After that point, he decided to just try living on his own and turned to writing to get through his frightening new mutation. His abilities developed to the point local newspapers picked him up as a freelance writer and let him do the occasional feature and reviews to earn his keep. He's not poor, but he's not wealthy, and tries to just keep his head down and mouth shut. Most of the time, literally.
Roleplay Where did you learn about this site?: Locke brought me! Do you have any other characters on MRO, if so who: Tses and Evelyn! Sample RP:
Everyone says silence is golden.
Ryden was fairly certain silence was just safe.
The pretty girl across the bar had red hair with a slight shimmer to it. He could describe it easily if he only had a pen. Fire-stoked, golden, beautiful... He sorted out the words as his mental muse wrote it down. Waving to the bartender, he motioned for the man to give the girl a drink. It was a simple enough message, but as she looked up and smiled at him, it was clear she understood. That was it, the pick-up line was on his mouth, ready to make it's way forward. But he bit his tongue and took a sip of his drink, reminding himself this could never work.
"Hey, this spot taken?"
There she was, a vision in red. Her hair was a scarlet color that just made her fire-colored locks stand out that much more. He felt a smile cross his face, and motioned to the chair. She sat, the ball was in his court, and he struggled to think of what he could do now.
"You new in the city?" She asked.
"No."
The word made the glass in his hand tingle. He was careful to keep his words down. She tilted her head and giggled slightly, pushing her hair from her face. "You sure talk quite for someone who was brave enough to buy a girl a drink. What's your name."
"Ryden." He smiled, but the glass buzzed more and he tried not to look concerned. She grinned and seemed not to notice.
"Ryden. You sound like you have an accent. Let me guess....German? No...British....Maybe...." The string of cities continued, until it was too much. He couldn't quite contain himself as he hastened to name his home country.
"You're close. I grew up in Ireland." He remarked, and the volume raised too fast. He heard her startled yelp as bits of glass littered down on the table, and he looked down as the liquid spilled to the bar. By the time he glanced back up, she left with some remark about the bathroom. It wasn't surprising, but it was disappointing.
He'd tried this tactic before. Sometimes, he broke the chair. The glass was a bit preferable. As long as no one was injured he didn't really mind the sting of embarrassment. His high school ending mistake took most of his shame away. Still, he liked to try, and it felt like each time, he was getting a little closer, figuring it out more.
Maybe next time....
Maybe next time they'd actually get to talk about the weather.
