The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

She really should just take the hint and leave him alone. Surely she could just run the file and send him off to wherever he was supposed to stay, nice and far away from proper society, without pestering him with all of this. It wasn't necessary, not by a long shot.
Neither brevity nor levity had satisfied her, though, so what would? Raging anger? Writing or drawing that would be one thing - actually doing it would fail miserably. And be kind of completely and totally stupid. Aiden shifted in his chair. Besides, for all she said it wasn't a prison, what else was he supposed to do? Going back to his parents' was not going to work. He wasn't going to be able to get a job and live on his own - heck, he was still in high school.
"My parents want me here so they don't have to disown their last kid or deal with me," he eventually muttered darkly. And they would have gone with disowning him too, if it weren't for the hospital staff telling them about this place. And probably strongly reminding them that they only had one strike left in the offspring department, and striking out probably wasn't the best idea. At the very least, explaining it would be even more societally awkward, since apparently they had announced the news that he had survived without injury before they found out how that was. He briefly wondered what would happen if one of the 'perks' Maya had referred to happened to be a drastically shortened lifespan due to dangerous mutants living on the other side of a thin wall.

Aiden's brow furrowed slightly as Allison moved, a touch of curiosity getting the better of him (there was indeed a little bit of common sense trying to suggest that he just open than door and take his chances, but curiosity and mild terror at going back out into that ground it into the dirt as quickly as it could grow).
Oh.
OH.
Yeah, he really should have seen that coming. Distraction, 1, observation, 0. Cue audience laughter at character idiocy. Right.
But seriously, controlling ink? And he thought that healing was useless. Well, he supposed she wouldn't have to worry about a pen exploding and getting ink everywhere, or getting air bubbles in a pen and having to scribble and tear paper until the ink flowed past it. That would be kind of welcome.
He really should give his observation score a boost. "Is that why...?" Trailing off, he gestured to Allison's general colourfulness, or at least tried to. He could notice things! He was just kind of distracted lately. Distraction was a fair enough state to be in, all things considered, wasn't it? And being distracted kind of negated anything his observational skills really picket up on, so.... All right, fine, he was totally trying to justify not putting the giant colourful twos together.

Ai blinked.
Then he blinked again.
She... thought that something that useless was cool? Seriously? How did that even work? And hearing that the only healing-type mutants she knew of worked in hospitals really wasn't all that pleasant. He didn't want to end up working in a hospital. He didn't like people anywhere near enough. Although... since, as far as he could tell, he couldn't heal other people, maybe he'd be safe from that. He really wasn't a hospital kind of person, though he wasn't sure if it was especially or despite his most recent involvement with them.
When she continued, Aiden glanced briefly towards the door before shrugging. Still better than dealing with that. "I dunno," he said neutrally. "I didn't notice anything like that up until now. I did feel cold before, though." He'd been cold watching his brother's game, even if it hadn't started snowing yet by then. His brother's last game.
He wrenched himself off that train of thought with all the force of will he could gather and set his attention on Allison. Even the people outside were a better option than that. "Being cold all the time has more to do with circulation, I think," he offered, and then stopped short. Wait, ink? What did ink have to do with anything. "What do you mean, ink?" he asked, his confusion writ clear across his face even with the sunglasses.

Right. Better than getting lost in those winding hallways filled with undoubtedly lethal mutants. Questions were unpleasant, but not lethal. Probably. Hopefully.
Darn it. She wasn't going to drop the other question. Now what? Tell her that he could heal himself - evidently only while unconscious - and nothing else? Really? That'd probably get him laughed out of the place. It would actually kind of almost be nice to be able to say he was some powerful, useful freak. At least then he'd be, well, useful. Instead of not. And lying would only work until she asked him to demonstrate, which she undoubtedly would if he said he was something cool and interesting. Like that would turn out well.
So instead he shrugged. Better boring than a bald-faced liar. "I dunno. I guess I kind of heal or something." He self-consciously rubbed the part of the scar running from his eye onto his ear before catching himself and shoving his hands in his pockets. They were just going to draw more attention to his scars. He didn't want that.

Distinctly less aware of - or perhaps somewhat more immune to - the growing awkwardness and silence, Aiden considered the sunglasses in his hands for another moment before sliding them onto his face.
He only made it far enough that they didn't quite stay on when the girl - Allison - went and dropped a particularly nasty question on him. Then another. He immediately crouched under the pretence of retrieving the glasses. He really, really wanted to get out of there. The only problem was that he distinctly remembered just what happened to be lurking around on the other side of that door that would save him from Allison. He really, really, really didn't want to deal with that.
Two absolutely horrible options. He had given one two reallies and the other three. Logic dictated that he take the lesser of two evils. He slowly returned to his feet, sliding the sunglasses on properly and hoping they were reflective or dark enough to disguise his eye. They kind of fit, at least. Now, how was he supposed to answer her? He really didn't like such blunt questions. They were downright cruel. And to have two of them at once? Wait - two questions meant he had a choice as to what to answer first. There was a chance he could get by with only answering one of them. Which was worse? The second certainly had a simpler answer, although he would have to be careful not to let the topic broaden too much. He could do that, couldn't he? "Only about a week ago," he forced himself to say, though it was awkward and ponderous.

The further into the building the girl took him, the less certain Aiden was that this was really the best way to replace his sunglasses. Seriously, he was in a horribly run-down and undoubtedly extremely dangerous part of town, and now stuck in this building and its winding hallways and surrounded by undoubtedly extremely dangerous mutants. Whenever they passed one in the halls, the girl nodding or waving to some of them, Aiden did his best to just walk past them. He did succeed in not jumping at the sight of any of them - though to be fair he intentionally didn't look at any of them, and couldn't have described many, if any, of them - so hopefully that would satisfy the girl.
When they reached her room, Ai was relieved. Very relieved. Rooms had doors that could close. With the door closed, he could stop thinking about and noticing all of... that. After a moment of relaxing (had he really been that tense? he hadn't thought so at the time) he looked around while the girl dig in a dresser drawer. The room was reassuringly normal. Books and paper and clothing. Normal. Normal was a nice change from all the recent insanity he had been subjected to.
At the sight of the sunglasses on offer, Aiden couldn't help but wince a bit at the rhinestone-studded one. Now that was one gaudy bit of eye protection. No wonder it was buried and unused. "Thanks," he said quietly, and picked up a far more sober pair to try on. Well... they were kind of tight in the temples and dug into his ears. Hopefully one of the other two sane pairs was a bit larger.
Allison? Aiden paused in the middle of taking a second pair to try on, and actually looked at the girl's face for a moment. Y'know, other than the weird colours, she really did seem pretty normal. Maybe the colours were just some city fashion thing. City people were weird like that. He studied the glasses in his hands for a moment before responding. "Er... I'm Aiden," he eventually said.

A school.
What was the probability that there were two mansion-like schools in New York City? Actually, considering the size of the city, probably pretty high. Yeah, he'd go with that, and just shrug. Nice and noncommittal. Besides, the conversation, such as it was, was moving onwards.
And was soon accompanied by a chorus of less polite words than were likely to ever meet his vocal cords, in several different languages. This place was for mutants too. Mutants+gang/model girl? Could nothing be simple?
Stop trying to hide his eyes? Was she insane? Really? Glancing around, however, and taking note of just how damaged the area was, he had to accept that this was probably a place that housed some rather dangerous mutants. Maybe playing by their rules until he had a pair of functional sunglasses and could get out of there wouldn't be such a bad idea after all. Nevertheless, he hung back warily as the girl forced the heavy-looking doors open, and only followed her in hesitantly. Though he forced himself to breathe more or less evenly, he was undeniably tense. He tried to do as directed and not hide his freak eye, but could only manage to glance away from the girl's heels in momentary flickers. Breathe. He had to breathe. Everything was calm and quiet still. There was still a chance it could stay that way, that nothing would happen.

Go to where the strange, potentially-mob girl lived? That sounded like an absolutely perfect opening for some big dramatic, probably lethal incident. Any half-decent storyline would have something big happen, unless the author wanted to be really sneaky and suspenseful, in which case nothing would happen but it would keep seeming like something would happen, over and over, until everyone starts to give up and relax, and then everything explodes in their face and was actually there all along.
But she said she could replace his sunglasses.
Maybe those movies where people walked right into the trap weren't so stupid after all. Ai was already moving, and not away from the girl. Well, if things started to look dangerous, he could always make a break for it. It wasn't like he was horribly out of shape, and there was nothing wrong with his legs, despite the weirdly frozen state his jeans were in.
The mansion? It almost sounded like she was verbally capitalizing the word. Trying to think of important mansion-like places in the city, Aiden could only thing of the sweeping grounds and building his parents had condemned him to. She wouldn't be referring to that place, though, could she? No, there must be something else. "Does it have another name?" he asked, hesitated, and continued. "I haven't been in this city long." As they kept walking, Aiden started to notice less and less well-kept properties, more damage and vandalism, and a general decrease in projected safety.
Glancing nervously around him, Aiden did his best to stick fairly close to the girl. He might not know anything about her, but she clearly knew where she was going, and even if that was into something horrible and nasty he would really, really, really rather not get lost in this part of town. Whatever part this was. He didn't have the slightest cue where he was anymore. Finally catching sight of Sanctuary - or at least noticing a distinctly better cared-for building with excessively ostentatious doors - he hesitated for a moment before catching up with the girl again. With all the damage around, the building's relatively good repair kind of stuck out like a sore thumb, even without the brightly painted doors.

She did advertising? Was she a model or actress or something, then? He struggled to assimilate that with the potential mob-girl view he had held. It didn't work. Models weren't mobsters, not even in anime. It just didn't work.
He tried to distract himself from the puzzle by poking a wet stretch of jean, but that really didn't help. It might have, if they had been just wet and cold like they should have been, but instead it was rock hard... and didn't feel particularly cold, even against his hand. Seriously? Was there cement in this mud or something that he hadn't noticed? No, he could still move his hands without issue, and they were smeared with mud as well.
"Do you know where Sanctuary is?"
Ai looked up at the girl from beneath his eyelashes. "Sanctuary?" he asked quietly and with a bit of confusion. You know, she kind of seemed a bit too... colourful to be an actress or normal model. If she were an anime character, she'd probably be some super-tough giant robot mechanic or one of the higher-ups of a rich, powerful underworld gang. Since the real world didn't have giant robots, that still left the gang scenario. Except she said she did advertising.

Aiden shifted uncomfortably. Well, someone was unnecessarily perceptive. How was he supposed to respond to something like that? His brother would just laugh it off - no. No. Dealing with this person and this place was better than thinking of that. Anything was better than thinking of that. Anything.
He forced himself to breathe, to talk. Only... he still didn't really know what to say. Sarcasm? He was trying to be polite-ish. Sarcasm didn't really fit with that. He certainly wasn't going to do something crazy like burst into tears and whine and moan about how this was ruining his life. Besides, it wasn't ruining his life - it had already been ruined. This was just the icing on the cake to keep his life from ever getting better.
How about dry humour? There were worse options, and Ai really couldn't think of any better ones right now. "And here I thought I was keeping that hidden pretty well." As he spoke, though, he quickly realized that he couldn't keep his tone from flattening out, for all that there was almost some levity at the start.

Jacket.... mind... reading... kid? The phrase wasn't an easy one to process. What did jacket mind reading have to do with fixing sunglasses? How was someone supposed to go about jacket mind reading? Shortly before he managed to make the connection that the brightly coloured girl was involved with mutants and thought nothing of it, she continued, and he shrugged automatically.
"Wait, you do?" he said, surprised and more hopeful than he would have liked to admit. He dropped his head again and shifted slightly. "They're nothing special or anything... I just... don't like going around without them." That wasn't giving her anything new; she'd already seen what he was hiding, at least superficially. Why would she give replace his sunglasses, though? She didn't break them and didn't know him; in what way could she possibly feel responsible enough for the problem to give material aid?
Wait, what? Ai blinked at the girl and belated realized how heavily dressed she was, and then took a closer look at the ground around him. Sure, he was wearing a jacket himself - he'd have to be stupid to not grab one when heading out for who knew how long in this weather - but it did kind of look cold out. Except he didn't feel cold. At all. Even where his pants were obviously soaked and looked like they might be starting to freeze solid. What was going on?

As directed, Aiden lowered himself onto one of the chairs arranged against the wall. He did his best to refrain from glancing around at everything, even if the office was really just a fancier version of the one in his former school, but soon found himself rubbing the pale scar on his shoulder and forced himself to stare at his hands instead.
When the girl spoke again, Ai glanced up but quickly dropped his gaze again. Maya. Hm. Decent enough name. Wait, she was one of the people in charge? He blinked at her, but she was already continuing. She needed information? Didn't his parents do everything? Probably not. So be it.
"Yes," he answered briefly. The momentary debate on whether or not he should leave it at that was settled quickly enough; if this Maya person wanted to know more than that his parents had agreed to this, then she could ask. He certainly was not interested in talking about his personal life with these people.

He'd have to try to sell or trade some of his computer games or something, he decided. It would be sad, but he could survive without a few of them. Just enough to cover the cost of some cheap sunglasses that would cover his eye. He'd have to find some way to sell them online or something, though, because he couldn't just walk into a game store and see how much they'd pay for his games.
"That... doesn't look very repairable."
"You think?" he muttered automatically. Wait, was that the girl from the tree? She was on the ground now? Ai quickly dropped his head and glance to the side, trying to hide his eye without being insanely obvious about it. Hopefully. "Er, sorry," he said after a moment. Being rude wasn't going to help the situation. Besides, city girls were supposed to be tough. What if she were part of a gang, and that was what all the crazy colours were for? Bad as things were, Ai really didn't feel like getting lynched in some back alley.
He closed his fingers over the broken sunglasses, more than a little unnerved by the idea. "I must have stepped on them," he said quietly, and then pushed himself to his feet. As he did so, the sheer amount of wet mud clinging to his pants finally made a bit of an impact, and he sighed again. "At least it's not that cold today," he muttered. Never mind that what snow was on the ground really wasn't melting, or that there were still ice crystals in some of the mud from overnight. It didn't feel cold - to Ai - and that would do.

All right, the deadlines are closing in. My last exam is tomorrow afternoon, my parents are arriving somewhere after noon, and as soon as I get back from writing that exam I'm moving across provinces. Nine hour drive. So tomorrow night will have little sleep.
And then I start work on Monday, with an hour-long commute. Should be fun, since I haven't driven, much less driven standard, for what, a year? Again. I keep going long stretches without driving. Anyway, this weekend I will probably be quite absent, and then will not be able to spend all day lurking, but once things settle down posting will resume full-force.
