The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Mariusz lounged easily in the big chair he had appropriated for his day of reading. Idly the feathered man thumbed through the pages of the Kafka work as he read them. The Czech man was not the fastest reader in the world, especially when reading in English rather than Czech. Still, if there was one skill that almost all college students learned it was how to read quickly. Of course, a work with the length of The Metamorphosis, was not something that presented a terribly large number of pages to wade through and Mariusz finished reading it in about an hour and a half. Glancing over at the clock on the wall he noticed that it was nearly lunch time and his stomach took that moment to rumble to remind him of the fact. Placing the book he had just finished reading down on a cart to be reshelved the feathered man made his way out of the library to head off in search of food.
Securing his packages and shopping in his arms Mariusz sprang upwards and gave his wings several powerful beats to get airborne. Rising slowly higher and higher into the air over 5th Avenue he watched as Tses got into a cab. He would have offered to fly her home, but she had already rejected the idea of going for a flight twice and he did not think it would be overly polite to put her in a position where she would have to turn down the offer for a third time. With his packages secured and his person safely airborne the Czech mutant circled for a few minutes to gain a little more altitude and then set off in the direction of the Mansion.
"Oh, I did not realize you had a significant other," Mariusz replied amiably as Tses once again began to walk backwards down the sidewalk, noticing easily with his keen sight that she was blushing slightly. "Of course you must spend New Year's Eve with him," he continued brightly. "I would imagine you are right in supposing I could find someone at the Mansion to come with me to Time's Square tonight to see the ball drop. I have seen it a lot of times broadcast, but it would be fun to see it live."
Mariusz opened his bear box and dropped his other purchase lightly into it before sealing it back up. "There is so much to see and do here in the city, but I must confess there is plenty of time for me to do it all now that I live here and I would rather like to be getting on back to the Mansion. You should think on what I said and come join us there. It is really not nearly what you think it is and if you wound up not liking it you could always leave." He ruffled the feathers on his wings a little as he spread his wings just slightly to begin loosening them up. "Now, if you will give me your leave I think I shall be on my way home."
"New York is a glorious city if you enjoy people and events. There are, I confess, some of the best clubs around."[/i]
Mariusz tilted his head slightly to one side and regarded the teen in the bubble when he said something about New York having the best clubs. The Czech mutant was not a huge fan of clubs and the club scene. While it was true that he enjoyed the occasional beer every now and then, but he was not a big fan of all the loud music that was usually associated with such places. He preferred to find a nice bar where he could have a beer or two and watch a hockey game in peace and quiet. The other interesting thing about the remark was that it came from someone that looked far too young to be allowed into a club since Juka looked like he should still be in Middle School. He was just about to ask a question about that when Juka piped up with another question.
"Can you see like a bird as well? I'd imagine that'd be quite the experience."
"Yes, I do have eyesight that is far superior to that of any human. It is something of a necessity at the heights that I am capable of reaching with my wings," Mariusz answered, shrugging his shoulders as he hovered in the air with his wings flapping slowly in the falling snow, "well, either the keen eyesight or some form of Global Positioning System. You mentioned something about clubs," the Czech man asked, abruptly changing the subject. "I am curious how you would know about clubs? It would seem from your appearance that you are much to young to be allowed into such a place, if you will pardon my saying so. Does your mutation do something to slow your aging?"
Mariusz nodded to Jacob and Regan in turn as they passed through the door as he held it open. As each of them passed through he nodded to them to acknowledge their words and actions towards them. Once everyone was inside the feathered man stepped through the door and into the office as well. He would have gone to speak to the desk clerk to get the information that they needed, but Regan was already taking care of that job. Not wanting to be rude and butt in where he did not seem to be needed, Mariusz remained by the door and stepped to one side so anyone else that needed to enter could, leaning against the wall and remaining quiet while Regan handled the clerk.
Mariusz was about to answer Sophia's semi-unasked question that he was fairly certain there were no boarding costs for living at the Mansion. Before he could speak however the door to the office opened and a man Mariusz had not yet met, but whom he assumed to be the owner of the office they were currently standing in, walked in and introduced himself before beginning to rummage through the drawers on the desk in the office. After a bit of searching the man, who had named himself Sam, produced a shirt and the Czech mutant noticed that Sam seemed to have an eye patch, which he found most interesting though he was careful not to stare as that would be impolite.
Mariusz was just about to open his mouth to begin introducing himself and the others in the office to its owner when Sam turned his attention to Sophia and mentioned that he assumed she was the only one with an appointment. In truth Mariusz was not sure whether Sophia had an appointment or not, but it would have been rude to interject and speck for her regarding whether or not she had one. He was certain the blonde woman would know whether or not she had an appointment, so for the time being he stood in his spot leaning against the wall and waited for his turn to be addressed which he was sure would be forthcoming.
Mariusz and Tses stepped up to the register and watched as each of their purchases was put into their little box home. It was really quite quaint, who would ever think of such a thing? The marketing geniuses at Build-a-Bear, that was who. He listened as the clerk rang up the purchases and then told him what the cost was. "Of course," he said, fishing a wallet from one of the interior pockets of his suit coat. Producing a credit card the wallet he handed it over to the clerk. It was swiped and he signed on the little electronic device and that was that. He could tell Tses was not very happy in the store so even though he wanted to look around a little more he led her back out onto 5th Avenue.
Standing back out on the street he turned to examine Tses, a quizzical look on his face. "You know, it occurs to me that it is New Year's Eve. I have seen on television in past years that they drop a giant ball of light in a place called Time's Square in New York City at midnight," he said, gesturing expansively. "I would very much like to see that tonight since it is New Year's Eve after all. Would you like to come along?"
Mariusz walked over to the computer station and began working through the prompts. As he tapped on the electronic tool he was careful to make sure he did not extend the talons on his fingertips. Somehow he imagined that it might alarm the employees of Build-a-Bear as well as the parents and children that were in the shop. As many of them were already giving him something of a wide berth because of his appearance he could not see a good reason for doing anything to further their possibly misguided viewpoints. That and he might want to build another bear in the future and if he damaged the property of the store he imagined he probably would not be very welcome if he returned at a later date.
As he worked through the screens he decided that the logical date to use for the birth date for Franz was the date for the current day, after all that was the day that the bear had been built. With that in mind he plugged in 31 December 2012. Once he had finished with everything he turned his attention and focus back to Tses. "I have completed the birth certificate for Franz," he said, again holding up the bear for Tses to see. "I suppose the only thing left to do is to go and pay for everything, ano," he asked, gesturing in the direction of where they would need to go to pay for the purchases.
Mariusz shrugged his feathered shoulders at the words that most people did not think of hand-to-hand combat in terms of a chess match until they got a good instructor. He supposed that was true for anything that one wished to learn. The truly good instructors in any form of art often thought of it in terms that were different than how regular people or enthusiasts looked at that same thing. In part it was what generally made them experts and good instructors. Mariusz assumed that someone with training from a military that was as top notch as the one the Americans had would definitely view things a little bit differently and also be a good instructor.
As he was thinking on these things he paid attention to the conversation between Regan and Jacob regarding a job for her in his automotive shop. Mariusz was well aware tat such a job was not something he would particularly enjoy, so he remained silent on the subject rather than interjecting himself into it to seek a job for himself. As that was going on the trio of mutants reached the door that led to the admitting office and Mariusz stepped out just in front of Regan and snared the door handle, pulling it open. "After you," he said, gesturing that Jacob and Regan should proceed through the door and that he would hold it for them.
Mariusz glanced down towards the forest floor below him and noticed that Maya had run over to one of the bigger trees and seemed ready to climb it, judging by the fact that she had slung her bow. He assumed that teamwork was the order of the day, at the moment anyway, that meant he would need to work with her and demonstrate an ability to be a good teammate. He also assumed that the minotaur would be able to withstand most of the attacks he could make on it since most of his arrows were tipped rather basically, he only had a few arrows with broadheads on them, most of his had target points and field points on them. So, even if he were disinclined to be a team player, which was not the case, he would have to work with Maya since he assumed she was better armed than he was.
He tucked his wings in and dove towards the ground before fanning them about ten feet off of the ground. "Hold up your arm," he shouted to her as he flew in the direction of the woman. He had flown carrying others in the past, so he knew he was capable of carrying the added weight. However, he had never tried to grab someone with a foot before, but he had seen birds of prey do it on several different television programs and documentaries in the past. If they could do it then it stood to reason that he could too, he would just have to be careful not to hurt Maya in the process as his talons were quite sharp.
Mariusz was not familiar with the Dark Tower series of books, he preferred to stick to historical and theological treatises, if not those then he would read the classics. Still, he would have felt it rude to point that out to Jacob, so he remained silent on the matter. After all, he considered the big man to be an acquaintance that was in good standing, bearing no grudge against the man there was no reason to be potentially rude to him. "I would certainly be happy to do that some time. I would imagine you would be able to obtain a copy of the book you are seeking there and, if not, it could probably be ordered for you," he said, ruffling the feathers on his wings a bit as he leaned against the wall and regarded both Sophia and Jacob with a golden-eyed gaze.
The Czech mutant's feathers ruffled a little bit more when the glass in one of the window panes started to crack and then shatter, seemingly of its own volition and free will. His eyes widened a little bit as the glass floated free from the frame. He listened as Sophia explained what it was that she could do and settled down a little bit, watching the display of the woman's powers and abilities. He watched as the pieces of the glass floated around a bit then returned to their place in the window and the window resumed its normal shape and nature as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred.
"Very impressive," the feathered man said as the last of the pieces of glass resealed themselves back into a whole window. "You could be quite dangerous with those powers, to both person and property. Still, you seem to have a remarkable degree of control over your powers. Of course, I would not trade the ability to fly for anything," he continued, falling silent for a moment. Manners seemed to indicate that it was now incumbent on him to continue the conversation forward in a linear manner. "What brings you to the Mansion," he said at last, addressing the question to Sophia.
Mariusz looked down the hall in the direction that Reagn was indicating. Sure enough, there was the admitting office at the end of the hall. Even though Jacob had just stated that he preferred not to move into the Mansion it still seemed quite logical that they would be able to find someone there that could answer their questions about what they could and could not show Jacob as well as answering his questions about a jet that may, or may not, be located on the property. As far as Mariusz knew there was no such jet, but he was so new to the Mansion and even the country that he had no way of knowing quite for sure.
"I have no doubt of the truth of what you are saying Jacob," Mariusz replied to Jacob. "It really does make quite a bit of logical sense. I just had not considered it in quite that way before." As they had been getting closer to the office Mariusz had not missed the fact that Regan had picked up the pace a little. He was not altogether sure why she would choose to do that but it was her choice to make since she was the leader of their little group as the moved through the Mansion.
"But if you ever need a guide around the city, feel more than free to ask."
"Oh, what all is there to see in New York," Mariusz asked, wings still fluttering softly as the snow continued to fall around them while they talked. "I have already been to see a show on Broadway, do some shopping on 5th Avenue, see St. Patrick's Cathedral, and now I have visited and seen Central Park. I have even been to build a bear at 'Build-a-Bear' as I believe you Americans call it," the Czech man continued, omitting the fact that he had also found the Shadow's Light, a pub that catered exclusively to mutants it seemed. Some how he did not feel it would be the most appropriate thing in the world to discuss drinking and bars with someone who seemed to, quite clearly, be much too young for such activities even if they would have been going by European laws which they obviously were not in New York City.
"I'm afraid I'm entirely guilty, my dear. Inside my floating little soap bubble, wind, rain and cold simply don't matter to me. I wonder, sometimes, what it must be like to fly out in the elements and actually feel the wind. I'm thinking you know quite well, am I right my darling birdman?"
"Yes, I most assuredly know what it is to fly around outside in the elements," Mariusz said in answer to Juka's question. "However, I suppose I may not know as exactly that it is to fly in the elements as someone that does not have feathers. After all, the feathers insulate me somewhat from the elements too. I cannot think of too many people that can survive at some of the heights I can fly at without wearing heavy winter gear and the feathers do still aid in flying."
Mariusz accepted the open bottle of Pilsner Urquell when the beer was put down in front of him. Raising the chilled bottle to his lips and took a pull from the beer. A small taste of home in a land that was far from it. He allowed himself to relax just a little bit as the slightly bitter taste of the pilsner beer hit his tongue and slid down his throat. He was not really all that surprised to learn that there was no way to get the KHL on the television here in the States. That desire had been a bit of a long shot anyway and he had known that when he had asked. Still, now he knew for sure that there was no way to make that happen, at least here. He picked up the beer and took another pull from the bottle before setting it back down on the bar.
"Sorry to be so direct, but can you fly with those wings?"[/color]
"No need to apologize," Mariusz said, lifting the bottle to his lips and taking another pull. "You are not the first to ever ask that question, and I imagine that you will not be the last to ask it either. Yes, I can fly with my wings. I was led to believe that this is a ale house for mutants such as myself though I see very few in here that appear to be physically mutated. Still, I also fail to recognize any outward hostility from you or the other patrons. Nonetheless, I wonder if the mutant nature of this establishment extends to its bartender," Mariusz asked, taking another pull from the beer and arching an eyebrow in the woman's direction.
Mariusz looked past the stuffed animal grooming station to where the various costumes for the animals were. He followed Tses over in that direction before splitting off to look in the various bins. As a result of poking through the costumes and such on his own he complete missed the conversation that took place between the blonde woman and the child. As the Czech man poked through everything he came across something that was simply too good to pass up. Lederhosen for his bear, which reminded him of home, even if it was the more touristy aspects of home.
Reaching out he snagged the bear sized costume and held it up to his bear. Yes, the lederhosen was definitely the right choice to make. In his mind Mariusz saw the choice of clothing, mixed with the very American teddy bear as the perfect metaphor for his new life in his new home here in America, the mixing of Europe and America. He slipped the costume onto the bear, though others from his part of the world might have found it somewhat racist, the avian mutant did not. With his decision made he went looking for Tses.
"There you are," he said at last, having tracked her down. "How are you coming along with your choices," he asked, arching an eyebrow in the direction of the blonde woman. "What do you think of little Franz here," he asked, holding the bear out for Tses to inspect and comment on if she so wished. "Is there another step in this building of a bear?"
