The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Neena walked around the Danger Room, collecting the discarded bo staffs from a class dismissed moments ago. She was replacing the weapons in their locker when her phone buzzed on her hip, announcing someone at the gates.
"Be right there." She spoke into the phone held in one hand, while the other kept the wooden bos from falling, then used her hip to bump the locker door closed. A number of clatters from the other side indicated a mess-in-waiting for whoever opened that locker next.
Then she slipped on her sunglasses and headed outside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Neena approached the gates at a jog, pausing just before reaching them to catch her breath. She smiled at the youth on the other side, and waved.
"Sorry!" she apologized. "Just finished a class. Gimme a sec!"
She inhaled deeply to replenish her oxygen supply, and let it out slowly. Straightening, she walked the last few paces to the gate.
"How can I help you, m'friend?" she asked with a smile.
"Yes," she replied without skipping a beat, and then added "Haven't you ever watch Lion King?"
“Yeah, I was lying you got me, but what did you want me to say? You wanted to hear the truth? You want to hear how every second I think about anything I somehow go back to thinking about a drink, every second it’s burning me up inside.”
She didn't flinch as his voice rose, though she picked up the shuffling outside the door. What were the guards so worried about?
“I’m sorry didn’t mean to get upset.”
Neena waved away the apology. "No worries." She could tell he was trying to regain his composure, steady himself again.
“I am going to A.A. meetings everyday and I am trying to get my self sober for good, I promise when I get out I will not touch the stuff when I am out.”
"I don't want to hear a promise that you won't touch it again. It won't be that easy," she scolded, then backed off for a moment. She hadn't intended on giving him lecture, but apparently she was a bit more upset than she thought. When she spoke up again, her tone of voice had softened considerably.
"What I want to hear is that you won't run again. That you'll let your friends help next time. That you'll let me help next time."
She held out her free hand across the table.
"Deal?"
A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as she added, "And quit cringing. I'm not gonna hit you again. Not hard anyway."
Neena held in a snicker at Garrett's comment about not playing fair. Anyone who worked long enough with her already knew the odds of her 'playing fair' were less than those trying to fill an inside straight in poker. Possible, but highly unlikely.
"You may absolutely be nosy. I am actually here to visit and tour the Pax Academy. I am sure you have heard of them."
Indeed she had, and had quite a few friends who taught there. She brightened immediately.
"They wish to bring students on afield trip of sorts to the Colony and I was going to save them the long flight by jumping over and possibly setting up a gate for them to use exclusively for ease of travel. It's an interesting idea which I am warming up to. They can surely wait, as they may not be aware that I am here yet. I was actually going to call Iris from here and speak to her. But we can surely eat. Constant gate making makes Peter hungry. He will be happy to be here and have some good eats. Ladies first."
"Ever the gentleman." She chuckled and nodded her thanks at the chivalrous gesture. Then as she moved toward the door, she asked, "Have you heard from Maya recently? We lost touch a while ago, unfortunately."
She made her way down the hall easily; home was always the easiest to find her way around without aid. Even while talking, which she continued to do as they walked.
"So, PAX is sending a field trip to the Colony, eh? That'll be a great experience for the young'uns, for sure. Minus the cold of course." She shuddered, never having gotten used to the chill of winter in the northern states.
At the top of the stairs she added, "But I thought you didn't allow humans there. Does Katrina know that?"
As she waited for an answer, she turned her body in a circle, considering where would be the least obtrusive place for a new 'gateway'.
"Just... uhm. Depressurization? You know - a vacuum? He was on his way to imploding so I stopped short."
"Ah! That makes sense. Hm. That may be something to practice on with the robots later then. Best to practice with them, when destruction doesn't matter as much. Speaking of which," Neena shifted her weight, pulling one leg up so hat she resembled a flamingo, "I notice you've been using mainly defensive attacks. Pardon the oxymoron. You seem kind of hestitant. Don't forget that these are just hunks of metal, easily repaired or replaced. There's no need to go easy on them."
"Not that I'm encouraging you to become some destruction-happy elemental, or anything like that. But, it's better to push your limits here, where the harm factor is near nil."
She paused to see if Ghost would correct her. It was hard to get a read on someone who was only partially solid.
“If I really wanted a drink I would just escape, that’s probably the biggest fear of everyone here. A mutant using his powers to break out.”
Another blink, followed by one more, and continued tapping.
“So have a missed anything of importance at the mansion?’
Neena arched one eyebrow. The tapping still momentarily. She tilted her head, as if regarding him.
Then she reached out and landed a solid thwack! on his head with her staff.
"Hippo crap," she snorted (her version of 'BS'). "You're a bad liar, Sam, and I don't need my sight to see that. If you can't trust your friends enough with the truth, how do you expect them to help you? And before you say, 'It's my problem to deal with', just remember you didn't deal with it very well on your own the first time."
She leaned one elbow on the table, her chin on her hand, and sighed deeply.
"And everyone is fine at the Mansion. Just the usual amount of uncoordinated-young-mutant destruction and shenanigans. You haven't missed anything vital."
It seemed everything in this place echoed, making identifying individual sets of footstep a bit difficult. Still, Neena managed to recognize a certain hurried gait, long before she heard the voice to match.
“Neena?”
She turned her head, and smiled. "Hello, m'friend. Long time, no see. Literally."
She twisted in her seat to face him as he sat. For a long moment neither said anything. Then she heard him sigh slightly. She arched one eyebrow.
"What? Is there something on my face?" Despite the tease, there was an underlying tone in her voice, something akin to concern. Not one to be around the bush, she asked, "Are you still wanting to drink?"
She knew they wouldn't allow alcohol in the prison, though the inmates likely would be able to find some substitute. But that wasn't what she was interested in. She continued to tap the little box in her hand.
"Still fits. I hadn't worn it in a while and wondered before coming if it would. It's good to see you, m'friend."
Neena chuckled, and returned the embrace.
"I'm sure you haven't changed that much. And it's good to see you, too, m'friend. Or hear you anyway."
"Heh, yes, normally it would be the front door. I decided to save myself the long plane flight and save some money. No, I actually needed to visit some people here in New York and this was the only place I was intimately familiar with. Unfortunately, my assistant Peter, who makes the portals, wasn't. Hence the random entryway. I didn't expect it to be this random though. Sorry for not calling first."
Neena waved the apology away. "Meh! No worries. Friends don't need to call first."
She blinked once, her near-white eyes taking on a slight red tint, and glanced around with one of her still functional visions.
"Hmm. Your companion may find it a bit difficult to return the way you came...."
Mizu stirred, and sat up groggily. She rubbed the back of her neck, and grumbled, "Nani$hiterun datta!?" (roughly, "What the hell happened!?")
Neena coughed to hide a laugh, having learned that phrase from when Mizu first arrived at the Mansion, several years ago.
"Welcome back, kiddo. Mizu, this is Seizure. Seizure, Mizu. Mizu is one of our newest trainees. Seizure is one of our reserves. And remote testers. He was checking to see how you handled surprises."
Neena shot a quick wink in Garrett's direction, while keeping a straight face.
Mizu hopped to her feet, and bowed politely. "A pleasure to meet you, Sir." She glanced at her instructor, worry writ on her expression.
Neena smiled at her comfortingly. "Let's call it a day, kiddo. We'll finish up tomorrow." She bowed toward the girl, then patted her shoulder as she hurriedly passed by, and out the door.
"So," she began, turning back to Garrett, "may I be nosy about your visit, while we find a more convenient door for your friend to open? Preferably one in a less dangerous spot? And are these friends expecting you soon, or do you have time to eat?"
“Yeah, visitors are allowed, can’t say I had any though.”
Neena stuck her pinkie nail in her mouth.
”Well stop in any time, I’ll be glad to see a friendly face, not to many around here.”
She nodded reflexively, though he obviously couldn't hear her head shaking.
“Neena, it was good talking to you again… But the guard is giving me the wrap it up sign."
"All right."
It was an odd way to end a conversation; no 'Good to hear from you too' or 'See you soon'. Not even a simply 'Bye'. Strange, especially with someone you hadn't heard from in..... Had it really been a year? Was she that upset that she hadn't noticed? Things had certainly been busy, like always, during the school year. Hmm....
"Hey Doc? I need to make a quick trip into town. Can I borrow your car?"
"Neena!"
"What? What'd I say?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two days later, Neena accepted the guiding hand down from the bus and through the processing center for visitors at the State Penitentiary. She took a seat to wait, taking in the world around her by senses other than her unseeing eyes. She tapped a small box, about the size and shape of a notepad, against her guiding staff.
"Squeak. And nice job, by the way." The robots paused in their attacks momentarily. Neena smiled. It had taken quite a bit of creativity to come up with all of the attacks Ghost had so far. And the dark-skinned teacher was pleased to note that most of them wouldn't automatically be considered lethal.
"I do have a question, though, before we continue. That's screechy whine? What caused that?" According to the console, that particular attack had been registered as 'critical', though Neena could see no visible damage.
Mizu had just enough time to realize that the person before was just that; a person, not a robot, before darkness closed around her mind and body.
" Program pause! Authorization, Codename Seizure!"
"Acknowledged. Scenario paused."[/i] The grizzly beast froze mid-rear, teeth bared in a silent snarl. For a moment, the silence seemed to echo louder than the previous noise, before being broken by a familiar voice.
"Save and end session."
"Acknowledged. Scenario saved and ended. Retrieval code, Mizu Hidaka."
The hallway of doors faded away, as did the roaring bear, and the darkened areas of the room lightened and illuminated a figure that had been watching from the shadows.
Neena tilted her head forward, giving the appearance of looking over her glasses, one eyebrow arched slightly and a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.
"Hmm. When you said you'd be popping in once and a while, I assumed you would be using the front door."
“I’m sorry again Neena, I wasn’t really in the right state of mind when I left, I was depressed, angry lonely and well kind of became an alcoholic then and there.”
Neena sighed, and rubbed at her eyes. She felt a measure of guilt; she'd smelled alcohol on his breath more than once, and should have asked sooner. She should have known something was wrong with her friend.
“On a lighter note I am getting out in a few months, and if you guys will have me back I’ll make it up to guys, I Promise.”
Neena paused before answering that. "You know I have to ask the others." It wasn't coming back to the team that might be an issue; it was trust. Rebuilding lost trust could be a daunting task. She wasn't really quite sure of her own feelings at the moment, so she certainly couldn't speak for the team.
Neena was glad Nika had managed to keep the intruder from running any further. Truth be told, she was exhausted. They flying rocks didn't seem to have enough effect to make them worth it, so once she got within hearing distance, breathing heavily, she abandoned the makeshift weaponry.
Finally she was close enough to get a good look. And while she couldn't make out much because of the cloak, thanks to her photographic memory, she did recognize that scowl under the hood.
"Careful Nika," she growled out. "He's quick. And sneaky." She wanted to say cruel, as he'd certainly dispatched the camp guard cruelly enough. But there was a lot of killing during that time, and by people she wouldn't immediately label as vicious. Best to be safe though.
Another thought popped into her mind. When she had come across this character back during the Breakout, she'd had difficulty spotting him in the darkness. His skeleton had appeared faded and not whole. And just now, she had only know he was there by his heat signature.
"Keep him out of the shadows," she informed the others. "And watch for the knife!" She couldn't see one, but he'd used it back then without her being able to see it. Best to play it safe and assume him armed, and that his mutation had something to do with the darkness.
Mizu Hidaka edged down the hallway carefully, hand lightly tracing the wall besides her. She paid little attention to the details of the innumerable door frames lining the hall. She had other things to worry about.
Behind her a door flew open, accompanied by a guttural roar. Mizu twisted at the waist, even as the griffin pounced at her, and tried to sink its teeth into her shoulder. Or, where her shoulder had been a moment ago. The half-lion half eagle beast bit at air, as the nineteen-year-old compressed the area between her atoms, and rapidly shrunk to the size of doll. She dodged between the creature's legs, and reversed the process just as quickly. Within seconds she returned to normal size, and took a running leap for the door from which the griffin emerged. She hit it with her palm, and all at once it seemed to go through an identity crisis, deciding that it must be made of water rather than metal. It shot forward and wrapped around the beast, encasing it in a sealed ball. Another sweep of her hand, and Mizu tossed the creature back where it came from, and the door molded back into its frame.
She barely had time to breath before two more doors banged open, and two more monsters appeared. A volley of laser fire blasted down the hallway. Mizu once more shrunk, to make herself a smaller target, then ran forward. One of the monsters stomped viscously, trying to squish her like a bug. She dodged between them, smacked the source door, and again repeated the liquid metal cage. Before the first was encased, she took a running leap for the second door. She hit the metal frame and pulled it away, before realizing she'd hit the wrong door.
A long tentacle slithered out of the suddenly flaccid portal, wrapped itself around her tiny body, and squeezed. She kept her cool, and expanded her atoms in a quick burst. The sudden growth spurt broke the squid's grip, as well as knocking back the second beast backwards several feet, and the metal door quickly melted back into place. Mizu sprinted forward, slamming into the rogue doorway with both outstretched hands. For a fourth time the metal warped and lost its stability, reaching for the last griffin. As it pulled the beast in, it snapped at her. She yelped and shrunk rapidly, but not before its razor sharp beak snagged a bit of cloth out of her black and silver uniform.
"Level completed. Pausing for reset and difficulty increase," a soft voice announced. The asian mass-and-matter manipulator collapsed to a sitting position to catch her breath. However, only a few seconds passed before one of the doors further down the corridor suddenly opened on its own. Two humanoid figures stepped out.
Still imagining it to be part of the simulation, Mizu shot to her feet, growing as she went, until she towered over the two creatures by at least five feet. She kicked at one of the doors behind her. The metal once more liquified, and shot forward, intent on encasing what Mizu assumed were like all of the other creatures in this advanced training exercise; Danger Room robots with holoprojectors and the ability to cause serious pain if she didn't dodge in time. Speaking of which.....
A giant grizzly bear with dagger-length claws roared from behind the manipulated portal. Seeing its prey and two other humanoid figures, it lumbered in, one deadly-looking paw aimed to strike. Mizu swept her arm forward, intending to kill three birds with one stone, by encasing the bipedals with the metal, and using them to batter the bear back.
“Well… well I got a lead on my parents were and sure enough when I got there I found out my parents were dead, and I kinda went on my down ward spiral from there.”
Neena frowned into the silence, not even noticing that the DocProf had moved away.
Finally, he spoke up again. “I know I should have called but, I was ashamed of myself and I didn’t know how you and the team would react.”
"C'mon, m'friend. You've known me for nearly ten years. If no one else understood, I would."
