The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>“Thanks. I’ll take your word on that. After all, you’re the experienced parent here between the two of us.”
Gemma grinned. She was an experienced parent. But at the same time, she was also experienced with parents. They came in all shapes and sizes, and on all the levels of being prepared, from totally unsuitable all the way to... well, kinda okay. Dealing with them was as much work as dealing with their kids. The ones they wanted, or didn't want, and stuff like that that usually made a mess for the counselor to clean up.
Sipping her drink, she checked on Lane. Still asleep, Lizzie lying down next to her. Dogs apparently liked sleeping babies. Gemma smiled, and went back to her place, leaning against the counter.
"Jorge?" she asked with a playful smile on her lips "Do you want kids?"

>>“Well. I really like airplanes. I've had my license for two years, my pilot's license, that is. Also, I went to Egypt recently and took a side trip to the Serbian air force base. The original one. Did you know it was one of the first air forces in the world?”
Gemma arched an eyebrow. Talk about an unusual hobby for a girl. But she did have a pilot's license (she'll need to talk to Sam about that, whenever he decided to show up in the school he was supposed to be running), and she did seem to know what she was taking about. Also, Egypt? Serbia?...
>>“And this school has taught me the value of defending innocents, so I thought, what better way to do that then to help defend our country? Except I really am terrible at actually fighting anyone or anything, but I am good with planes.”
Now that sounded... true. But at the same time, made Gemma think about talking to Sam again. They needed to have a nice, long, serious conversation about the X-men. Among other things.
>>“The thing is, its going to be really really hard to get in. There's all this stuff I gotta do, and I don't know if I'll be able to do it all.”
"All right, let me see" she smiled, taking the list and looking at it. It was a long list. Long. Gemma hmm'ed and nodded, reading it. "Well" she looked up finally "You are not choosing an easy career path I can tell you that. But I think it can be done. First of all, let me look at your records..."
They should have the grades of their students in the system somewhere. Gemma was good at finding that. Typing away on her computer's keyboard, she glanced up again.

>>“Katrina Dumonde, 11th grade this year. I'm the invisibility girl.”
Gemma nodded. She remembered hearing about her before. She probably read her file too at some point. She'll need to look that up. For now, she just paid attention to the girl herself.
>>“So. Ms. Gemma. I've made a list... Aha! See?”
So. Many. Brochures. At least she did find what she was looking for.
"Why don't you take a seat?" she nodded with a smile, taking the list and the brochure.
"Air Force Academy" she read with a smile, and arched an eyebrow "Now that's unusal. Do you want to tell me why you would like to go there?"
She looked like a smart girl. Young lady. With a very unusaly career choice. Gemma was all kinds of interested.

>>"Yes, please,"
"Okay" Gemma smiled and nodded "Here is what we are going to do. You will get a room, and some clean clothes. You already know where the food is. I will talk to the teachers, and sign you up for classes - as long as you are here you will need to go to school, okay? But not right now, we will talk about it later."
She watched him eat his sandwich. He was so young. And already alone. She did not want to scare him off; but she had to ask anyway.
"Chase. If you want to stay here, you will need to tell me where you came from, okay? I need to know so I can make sure you stay here, and nobody shows up to take you away. I think this is a good place for you, as long as you would like to stay, but I need to know more about you."

Gemma arched an eyebrow when a pile of brochures got dumped on the already insane amount of paperwork that took up most of her desk. Well, at least the girl was not weeping. Yet.
>>“I want to go here, but there are tons of requirements. I need to change my schedule and join a sports team and make sure my grades are good enough and sign up for the ACT and the SAT and there's no way I'll ever be able to afford it, but I really want to go. Can you help?”
Now, there was a young lady who knew what she wanted. Excellent. With a small smile, Gemma offered a hand.
"Hi. My name is Gemma Taylor, and I am the new guidance counselor."
Relatively new, that is. She has been here for a year, after all, and she had yet to meet everyone in person.

>>"Yeah... I didn't think I'd sleep that long,"
Gemma smiled.
"Sleep is important" she nodded "It's good for you."
That was something kids tended to forget, and adults thought about constantly.
"So." she said, offering him a chair to sit down, and sitting down herself. "Do you want to talk about staying here for a while?"
She couldn't see why Chase would want to leave; she also knew she could have just kept him there, called Jorge, or something. But for now, she decided on a more peaceful solution. Talk.

It was that time of the year.
Counseling hours tend to get more and more busy as the holidays approach; especially so in boarding schools, especially so with runaway kids, especially so with mutants. And all of those together.
Gemma was sitting back in her office, warming her hands on a mug of tea, catching a five-minute break between weeping and sulking teenagers. She could do this. She was good at this. And in the end, she was helping these kids, and that felt nice. That didn't mean she was not exhausted. She wanted a hot bath and a good night's sleep. Preferably at Jorge's place. But the day was still far from over...
... and someone was knocking on her door.
"Come in!" she called out, setting the mug down onto the desk.

>>“Do I get a mouse-earred hat to go with this wonderful trip?”
"Only if you want one" she giggled. Now there was an image...
>>“Well, here’s to hoping that luck is on our side today... Wow, I didn’t think I’d suck this bad at watching a little child.”
Gemma smiled and put some honey into her tea.
"You don't suck" she told him, leaning against his shoulder "You really don't. Parents are never perfect anyway, according to kids... we are barely okay at best."
That was her experience. You do the best you can, and you leave the rest up to nature and pure luck.
"It takes some getting used to" she added, musing as she glanced towards Lane "But you would have figured it out on your own, eventually."

Gemma did manage to get an afternoon nap. She woke up fresh and a bit dizzy; it took her a few moments to remember the boy she'd just brought in. She was leafing through some paperwork when she heard the knock on the door. She knew who it was, or at least she hoped; she really did not want to find out Chase had ran away. She didn't believe he would, but it did happen from time to time with kids like him. The kind that needed her help.
Chase stood in the door; Gemma smiled.
"Hi" she greeted him "Did you sleep well?"
She did notice the backpack. She wondered what it meant...

>>"I think I'm good, Miss Gemma. Thank you."
"You are welcome." she smiled at him "Welcome to the Mansion."
Pulling the door closed behind her, she returned to the kitchen. Cleaning up did not take much time; she hummed to herself as she did. Once everything was in order, she went back upstairs to her room. Maybe she could catch a nap too. And then she had to figure out what to do with the runaway shifter boy. That is, if he was still there when she woke up...

>>“Ah…the dog. Do not mention that name again, she is dead to me. She abandoned me in my hour of need and is hiding someone in the house.... Don’t you try getting out of trouble, missy,”
Gemma chuckled. Lizzie was good at pretending to be innocent. Puppy eyes help with that a lot. Leaning down, she scratched the dog behind the ear, and when she rolled onto her back, she scracthed the belly too. Legs twitched, and Lizzie was completely won over.
>>“As for why I suddenly find myself the father of young Ms. Lane, in there... Ms. Kim lives in the apartment next door, she’s newly divorced, and her babysitter apparently completely cancelled on her last minute. So, since she trusts me because I’m a cop and friendly and all, she let the kid with me. She’s normally a real sweetie, but I’ve never watched her before.”
"Welcome to the world of parenting" she grinned at him, taking her mug of tea and sipping the warm drink. It was not really a permanent arrangement, but that did not mean she could not tease him about it.
"If we are lucky she sleeps for an hour or two." she said, leaning against the counter.

>>"Naps are for babies... Okay... a short nap, and a sandwich, and then talk some more..."
Gemma smirked.
"Babies and grown-ups. I know I could use a nap sometimes..."
That is, most of the time. While dealing with children, Gemma really learned to value any sleep she coul get...
>>"Can I help clean up?"
"That's fine I'll clean it up. You just make your sandwich." she smiled, waving a hand "But thank you."
Once the sandwich was ready and on a plate, she walked with Chase upstairs to the boys' bedrooms. She knew the ones that were occupied, and found one that was not. After some rummaging, she even found bedsheets and blankets.
"There you go." she smiled at Chase "All yours. Sleep as much as you want, and come find me when you wake up. Bathroom's there, and my room is just down the hall on the other side, my name is on the door. Do you need anything else?"

>>"I'm okay. I just don't shift that fast. And, going from short, to tall, to short again... I'm just feeling a little dizzy."
And now Gemma was feeling guilty. She should have known better than to push the kid to show off his powers. It obviously took a lot more than she expected. And now he was trembling. She wrinkled her nose, then nodded.
"All right, Chase, how about this. We go find you a room and a bed, and you take a nap, okay? You need to rest after all this. And then when you feel better we can talk about the rest." she smiled. She was pretty sure Chase was going to stay in the school. But it was important to let him know that in the end, it was his decision.
Gemma cleaned up the table in no time at all, making sure she left everything he might want to eat.
"If you want another sandwich, you can take it up to your room."

>>"Thank you, Miss Gemma. You're the first person I've ever showed that to on-purpose, so I'm really glad you didn't... Hmm, freak out."
She smiled at him as he shifted back. He looked tired now, which was no wonder, going from boy to woman was not some minor change in hair color. She felt admiration for Chase. He was alone, ran away from home, and still had amazing control over his abilities...
"There is nothing to freak out about" she smiled "I mean, it is weird to see myself copied so well. But it is more amazing than scary."
Chase sat down and pulled up his hood. He did look a bit wobbly.
"Hey" walking over to him, she put a hand on his shoulder "Are you feeling all right? Does your ability have side effects?..."
