The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Loud and lazy. The comment hurts more than the many bruises he sports. Somewhere deep down that feels wrong but that part of him has been shrinking by the day. So the loyal servant cringed at the assessment. Stealth and he had never gotten on too well. Drew had gotten by on not being noticed, not actually being good at hiding. Give him a crowd and a little bit of time to remember how and he could blend. Not like an expert but he could. Martin dismissed the stealth exercise with a commandment to practice and they moved on. Or rather physically they did. Drew was busy thinking of ways to practice stealth. Maybe the Danger Room? How did you go about practicing hiding anyway?
Now they stood before something. Someone. Someone in a situation that almost caused a violent flashback in Drew. Pain, blood, promises, and an alleyway. Meeting Martin for the first time. Relearning the lesson of discretion with each new hurt. He had to actually shake himself out of the memories. But he wasn't disappointed. Far from it. The more Martin spoke the more Drew felt he'd been given a reward for all the pain. Drew felt the vicious smirk tugging at his lips as Martin finished his little piece of drama. More for the benefit of the filth hanging from the chains than Drew, he suspected. When he wasn't the target of it Drew could appreciate just how frightening Martin could be. As the target you tended to be more interested in just surviving the encounter.
"With pleasure. Any suggestions or should I just pick a body part?"
It was more latitude than he usually allowed himself with Martin and Drew hoped fervently that he had not overstepped in acting so. More pain would follow for him otherwise. It wasn't his best teacher. Not anymore. But a teacher was better than none and more often than not pain had taken that position.

They'd fought. It wasn't much of a fight but Kevin and Lillian didn't understand. They thought he could just go to college nearby. The risk was too great. The people here wouldn't understand if they found out. So he left. 700 miles to New York City and counting. Goodbye home.

There's blood on his shirt from this one. It'll take a while to heal, darn switchblades. It won't be easy to hide. All Drew can do is take care of it himself and hope they don't realize until it's healed. Because he's not going to see DocProf. Not at all.

The end of the fight came far far too soon for Drew's taste. This had been the only time he'd been able to fight in such a way. The only time people had been afraid of him for what he could do instead of what he had done. It was a heady feeling to a man that still considered himself far too weak. If only this wasn't just a temporary thing. Drew found himself fighting the urge to find a way to stay in contact with this woman on the off chance that she might allow him that power again. There was no question in his mind now why she'd been targeted. Anyone that didn't want what she could do was a fool. So why was he trying not to get attached?
Because it wasn't his own power. It didn't come from him alone and therefore he couldn't rely on it. He hadn't worked as hard as he had and come this far to give in to the easy way out. If that was the case he could have continued to rely on pushing people away and hiding what he was. So even though that feeling of strength gave Drew a rush that he wouldn't soon forget he wouldn't be trying to charm the lady into letting him stick around. It wasn't easy but what about his life had been since he came to this darn city? As Aedus thanked the lady Drew took a deep breath to settle himself.
"What he said. Not sure we'd have made it through that otherwise."
The couple of mutants were safe, the aggressors had been severely punished, and he and Aedus were still alive. It was a good evening, no matter how bittersweet it felt to have to rely on and let go of the power that he'd held for a short time.

As soon as the compliment came Drew just shrugged it off. It was work. Sam paid him to do it. Of course he'd keep up with it. However the comment about where he'd been when they first met got a laugh out of him. Drew smirked and chuckled and took a drink of his beer. He brushed off Sam's apology for the jibe with a wave of his hand.
"When you're right, you're right. I was a mess back then."
Implied in the statement was that he was less so now. Drew figured it wasn't true. He was just a different sort of mess now. One that was a little less scared and a little less fragile. Sam's further comment about seeing someone more confident felt good to receive but he shrugged it off too, at least within his own mind if not outwardly. Sam's praise was something Drew appreciated and indeed even wanted but Drew still felt like he had a long way to go. He still felt too weak though that was something that he suspected might never go away.
Sitting back to let Sam order, Drew looked around and smiled whenever someone made eye contact. At least half of this evening seemed dedicated to flirting with everyone in the bar. Well all the women anyway. Flirting with guys could well wait for another night. Sam shocked him out of his quiet observation with his last casually delivered sentence. Clearing his throat, mostly to give himself time to think, Drew stammered out an answer.
"I didn't know I needed to be there..."
The implications of Sam's statement were starting to kick in and Drew focused on his beer, far too empty for this conversation, to get him through it. Surely Sam didn't think he was ready for that already?!

Handling the larger group went better than Drew expected. Which is to say he was still pretty messed up by the time Aedus limped over to help but he wasn't dead and that was a plus. Drew had caught glimpses of the woman in action. She seemed ferocious. What she had been doing though Drew didn't really know or care because at the time his head had been seconds away from being used as a soccer ball. He'd avoided that but his kidney had paid the price in the form of a vicious sucker punch. That Drew was still standing was mostly a testament to how much he'd been put through before. The thought that Martin could do and had done worse to him was strangely comforting.
Aedus had pulled the lady out of the fight. While Drew was glad she was out of harm's way another part of him mourned the loss of another combatant. At least until she started up with the chanting and his injuries started to heal up. He felt better, loads better in fact. The adrenaline rush that normally got Drew through these situations seemed stronger now. He felt stronger. He felt faster. Was this what normal mutants felt like when fighting? Suddenly some of the disbelief that he'd endured at his willingness to fight despite not having something useful in a fight made sense. Fighting like this was easy. He barely felt the opponent's blows. A grin blossomed across Drew's face.
This wouldn't last. He knew it all to well. But if this was to be his only taste of what having a real mutation was like then he was going to enjoy it. No matter how far he'd come or how accepting of his own mutation he was now Drew would always be painfully aware of his limits. Of the fact that he was less that most of the other mutants he knew. Even if they refused to see it. Swinging another punch into another thugs face Drew laughed loudly. The fear on the men's faces was sweet to him and he savored it even as he contemplated breaking a few limbs as a lesson.

Gina seemed put out by the whole thing while Nate just shrugged it off with a grin and a condescending comment about it being a 'Clever trick, kid.' Maybe he didn't mean it in a condescending way but Drew had never really liked being called a kid. Here he was twenty one, working at a school for mutants, and putting his life on the line regularly and this guy thought of him as a kid? Rationalizing it out as the guy not knowing him Drew pushed the thoughts aside. Though he still wasn't fond of the guy. Sure he was good looking but an inordinate amount of the people he knew were in someway attractive. Yes Gina seemed to like him but she really seemed to like everybody.
In the end, caught up in his thoughts as he was Drew ended up letting Gina gush about the library before he tuned back into the conversation in time for Nate's question.
"Two floors full of books. So the collection is pretty good."
Drew grinned fondly, remembering pawing through shelf after shelf of books when he'd first got here looking for interesting things to read.
"A reader's dream really...well short of having the Library of Congress to yourself."
Drew smirked and led the way toward the room in question.

Sipping at his water Drew watched the little ID drama unfold before him with little interest. It was the only thing in here worth paying attention to since his marks hadn't deigned to show up. That it was the only thing worth paying attention to didn't negate the fact that it was fairly dull anyway. Just another underage kid trying to get booze on a fact ID. Yawn.
At least until the bouncers got involved.
Drew wasn't inclined to get in the way even though they were being rougher than he thought was necessary. Frankly the fact that the barkeep was throwing her out was a little odd to him. She could still by non-alcoholic drinks after all. Not a money minded barkeep. Maybe he just didn't want the trouble having someone underage in a bar full of drunk or nearly drunk men was bound to cause. His policy of non-interference went out the window when the guy getting rough with the girl hit the floor.
Mutant.
It was the first conclusion Drew jumped to when something unexplained happened anymore. Mostly because it was usually right. Well it wasn't the fight he was looking for but it'd do. Drew drained his water and slapped a few bills on the counter quick like before walking over to the situation that had become the bar's focal point. He arrived as the girl landed a punch on the big one's face. Spying the other one starting forward Drew lashed out with a kick to the back of the guy's knee that sent him tumbling to the floor. Not feeling particularly quippish Drew refrained from making a smart comment and settled for nodding to the girl and focusing his attention back to the guy he'd sent staggering. She'd picked out the big one for herself so he was going to trust her to handle him. Not because he thought she could but because she'd decided it for herself.

A night in was rare for Drew these days but he felt it wouldn't be good to be out too often. For all his goofing and flirting with the ladies Sam was a pretty sharp guy when he wanted to be. Heck it was a must for the leader of the X-Men. Spending too much time out of the mansion would get more attention than he wanted. So Drew stayed in. This was the second night in a row he'd done this and last night he'd ended up baking just for old time's sake. The cinnamon rolls had come off well. What tonight's mission would be he wasn't quite sure. Maybe something different than usual? Coffee cake might be nice. It had been quite some time since he'd made that. Decision made Drew passed the time in his room quietly until most of the house was asleep and then trekked down to the kitchen. The saran wrapped plate took Drew entirely by surprise.
One of the students had taken the time to bake him something in return for the cinnamon buns? That was oddly endearing and out of character for most of the kids. Probably someone new that he hadn't met yet. Peeling back the saran wrap Drew bit into one of the cookies. Not bad. In fact they were pretty good for someone who likely didn't have as much experience as he did in this particular field. A smirk settled across his features. He'd show the kid how it was done while he was busy with the treats for the morning. Adding some sugar cookies to the rotation wouldn't be too difficult.
The baking for the night was finished. A plate full of fresh sugar cookies matched the ones he'd been gifted by student unknown. There was coffee cake as well as two different flavors of muffins waiting for the students but the sugar cookies needed some special preparation. Darting out of the kitchen Drew slipped up to the offices for some paper and a pen. Back down in the kitchen Drew wrote out the recipe he used for his cookies on one side, folded it up, and then wrote a brief note on the other.
Not a bad effort. Try this recipe next time though.
Drew wrapped up the plate of cookies just as the mysterious person had done and put the note with it. Then he retreated to his room with a plate of sugar cookies to eat. Maybe he'd share a few with Verdy when they passed off Jack.

All too soon they were leaving the bar and looking for a table to call their own. Drew was all too happy to let Sam lead the way. It wasn't as though Drew had done this too particularly often. Sure he'd been out a couple of times since his 21st earlier this year but after Martin he'd all but ceased drinking unless he had someone he knew and trusted with him. Those people were relatively few in number. They found a table quickly enough for how crowded the place Sam had chosen was. It was a large booth, far too large for just the two of them. Drew had no illusion that the empty spaces would stay empty for long if Sam had anything to say about it.
Sitting down after Sam, Drew drained the shot that had been ordered for him. He followed it up with a swallow of his beer. Drew let his attention wander for a minute until a question from Sam snapped it back. How was he? What was Drew supposed to say to that? There were plenty of things he should tell Sam. But should and would were, as always, two different things. Another swallow of beer put off his answer for another moment.
"Ok I suppose." Nicely vague that answer was, "We've both been busy I guess."
The answer was truthful enough but vague. Since Sam suffered the same affliction to his answers regularly Drew didn't think it would matter much. The way he saw it his boss would either know what had been going on or he wouldn't. Though which was preferable Drew couldn't say.

While Aedus didn't believe in odds Drew did. He believed that no matter how strong or tough you were you could still be brought down by numbers or intelligent tactics. So while Aedus may not have been too worried Drew was. He knew that the strength he'd gained since he'd come to the monument of concrete and steel that was New York City wouldn't be enough to keep himself as well as Aedus and the mugged mutants safe from the group of seven distinctly rotten individuals. Not that they looked particularly nasty but they were participating in mugging a presumably innocent mutant couple. That was enough to make them rotten in his book. For about half a minute they stared at him as if just looking at him as though he were an idiot would cause Drew to move.
In this particular situation the idiot assessment was probably fairly apt. Drew was willing to cop to it because he did feel stupid. Though aggression and the need to misplace it were far more prevalent. He grinned, though the lack of light and the hood hid most of it. Then he waded into the group with fists and feet flying. He gave as good as he got and when the female mutant joined him he barely noticed her. What Drew did notice was the number of incoming blows lessen. The pain from his opponents blows receded as the number of blows decreased thanks to aid. What she was doing Drew didn't notice. He was far to focused on his fight to care.

A smirk played across his face.
"You have no idea. Why, I met my boss while trying to hold up a coffee shop. It's a long story."
Drew held himself back a moment longer than his companion. He'd said he was less naive about his activities and he meant it. No matter how his partner for the evening dismissed the group they worried Drew. His hesitation saw him rewarded with the view of the group turning to join the muggers. Muttering unpleasant physical impossibilities, Drew sped up and put himself between the group and Aedus.
"Finish up quick buddy! We've got company!" he shouted to Aedus before assuming a fighting posture in front of the group. Drew had no delusions about being to take them all but if he could keep most of them occupied long enough for Aedus to finish up Drew figured he'd stand a better chance of not ending up a bloody smear.
Any fight you could walk away from was a good one in his humble opinion.
Heck, maybe with luck the other mutants would help them out. That would be fortuitous. Not likely to Drew's mind but lucky.

Drew stayed quiet while Gina and Nate talked. He wanted to draw out the time until he had to tell Nate about the loophole for as long as possible. But they didn't say much and so all too soon it was time for him speak again.
"There is a way out of it you know." he stretched, mostly to draw things out, and continued, "I release you from your promise."
There was a tug at the bond between them. The tether crafted by Nate's promise snapped and the ink around their wrists began to fade as quickly as it had come.
"There, no more pesky promises and you're free to fight or harm the X-Men as you see fit."
Of course Drew still had three of his own and one of another person's but there wasn't much to be done about that. He really couldn't remember who the first promise was to or what it was. The two to Martin would be there until his master let him go from them and Drew didn't think that he'd told the man that such a thing was possible. Not that he really wanted it to happen. Drew was content in his servitude, less pleasant aspects and all.
"Well I think we've had enough fun on this floor. How about we hit the library and then head up to the second floor? It's offices and dorms up there."

Gina actually face palmed because of all of this. Her voice told Drew all he needed to know about what she thought. Namely that he'd been a grade A idiot in how he'd handled telling Nate about his mutation since it'd resulted in this. How she didn't know one of the little details about it. Drew kept the fact that he could be release from promises secret from just about everyone. Frankly he was just so used to withholding information about it that it was quite natural for him to do so. After Martin, well it made even more sense. If he had two masters then his loyalties would be divided wouldn't they?
Nate was taking it surprisingly well. He just rolled with it and wanted to know the details. Drew found himself respecting the other man for that and he nodded, mostly to himself, before answering. Oh he'd still let the guy out of the promise but might as well let him know the full brunt of it.
"Essentially yeah. You break that promise you'll get hurt. Might be just a headache. Could kill you. Depends on the circumstances really. If you killed an X-Man well...you'd probably die. If you just punched one? Probably just a headache, maybe a bruise."
Drew rolled forward on his feet until he was no longer leaning on the wall.
"That promise will last until the first time you hurt an X-Man. Then it'll go away and you'll be free and clear. As for the tattoo, you're stuck with it until the promise goes away. You think I have these for show?"
He raised his left arm to show off the five bands around it. Three were plain black. Then there was the one from when he'd taken his first promise with this new facet of his mutation and last but not least Nate's green thorny one.
"It's there to mark that you made a promise. You get no say in what it looks like."
He paused. He was going to be far too dramatic with this but Drew couldn't find it in him to care. In a twisted way he was having fun.
"Oh, and by the way. There's a bit of a compulsion involved. Just to make sure you don't break the promise too easily. It'll get stronger the longer the promise is in effect. Why after a while I bet an X-Man could attack you and you wouldn't even want to defend yourself."

Drew ignored the rest of the conversation in favor of sagging against one of the walls in the hallway they stood in for the moment. For a minute he smirked as Nate mentioned meeting an ink controller.
"If you mean Allison...I know her. But no, I don't control ink."
He sighed audibly. Drew hated this part of meeting people. Explaining his mutation, and the now the twist it had taken, was difficult.
"My mutation enforces promises. Used to be just my own. But the thing I haven't got 'round to tellin' most folk is that now it works on other people too."
He glanced at Gina.
"Remember when ya found me out in the gardens acting crazy as ya please? It wasn't long after that that it started doing this. I was hearing every promise made in my vicinity and feelin' my mutation react a bit. That's why I was so gone. It still happens but I've gotten used to it mostly."
Drew eyed Nate. The promise he'd made wasn't a particularly harmful one and Drew planned on letting him out of it. But first he wanted to see how the guy responded to it. It was still so new to him to have other people be bound by their promises. Drew wanted, needed, to know how other people would react to what he dealt with all the time.
