The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Sveta ran a gloved hand through her hair as she waited outside the Haven building for her partner. Partner. For this mission, anyway. She was not used to having partners anymore, if she ever truly had been. Back in the day, she would team up with people in the heat of a fight, or she would be sent along on a mission by Sam, who might or might not show up to help her. After that, in her vigilante days, she was mostly on her own. Jude was there but he was not... with her, on the missions, and since Sveta had always been self-reliant, she thought she did not miss having anyone else around when things needed to get done.
And then she joined Haven.
Devon and Sveta talked about training her powers one on one, and pairing her up with people if a mission or another required her special talent. Right now, as things stood, she was tagged for one - Haven needed to gather more intel about the rift that appeared in the middle of New York City. It was not supposed to be a fight, just cautious probing of resources and angles. Derek, the man she had been paired up with, was also a member of Haven, although she had not really talked to him until now. The blonde, dressed in a dark green jacket and jeans, waited outside the building, fidgeting with the hems of her elbow-length green gloves.
A new day, a new mission, a new partner. She was determined to make the best of it.

>>”You’ve probably figured this out by now, but he’s a bit of a showboat. With food, at least, he can back it up,”
With food, and with boxing, and with... other things. Apparently the guy did not only have the looks, he also had the talent, or at least the kind of talent people expected him to have, anyway. And then some, since he was a librarian... Dammit. Sveta shook her head and chuckled. The more she thought about it, the more annoying Booker got. That had to be a talent too. Nessa, on the other hand, was getting more flustered for some reason, probably because of her aura, and eventually went to join her brother in the kitchen, and help him bring out the heaps of delicious-smelling breakfast he had made. Showboat indeed.
>>”Alllllrighty… I made plenty so please, mangia, mangia. I hope my sister has been pleasant company and hasn’t talked your ear off?”
"She's okay" Sveta grinned at the siblings. She really did not mind Vanessa, and even though she seemed to think she was being awkward, Sveta found her chatting endearing. She reminded her of her brother in a way, and also like a friend she had not met before. They took seats around the table - except for Booker, who rummaged around for something, then returned to the bedroom... just to reemerge moments later with the whipped cream can. Sveta blinked.
Oh. That.
>>”Um…empty. Heh. I…I’ll just set that over here. I’ll…buy you a new one… Um...dig in?”
The moment hung in the air. Brother. Sister. One-night-stand. Whipped cream. Breakfast. Fuzzy bathrobes.
Sveta burst out laughing.
It was... good, to laugh like that. Like something was genuinely funny, and she was among people who would think the same; like she could laugh at the fact that she somehow used up an entire can of whipped cream over the course of an awesome night, and she was not feeling regret or shame, just the satisfaction over having spent it with someone who was not creepy or clingy or dangerous, in fact, he was safe, and friendly, and looking at him and his weird but friendly sister they made Sveta feel like she might actually become friends with them. She did not have many friends like this. Or any at all. So she laughed, and shook her head, wiping some tears way in the end.
"No... I think, I should buy you a new can."

The nurses got Akshay on a gurney, a doctor came running, and there were already medical terms flying around that made things look a lot reassuring and efficient than a few moments before. Sveta let out a relieved sigh, and remembered to zip her jacket up - since she had left her blood-soaked shirt in the alley, she was still only wearing a bra under it. People stared at her, and the blood stains, and she realized she must look like she had been in some kind of a fight. She folded her arms and looked down at the phone.
>>”Just keep trying. 0-3-1-1. And…don’t steal my phone!”
Sveta clicked her tongue and rolled her eyes. As if she was desperate enough to steal someone else's crappy phone. She had been, once upon a time... but even then, she would not stoop to taking a phone from someone who had just been in an accident. What kind of a person did he think she was?... Did he even remember her?
She called the number again. No luck. She tried a couple of times, then, just for good measure, tried her own number. It connected. She tried the other one again, since the phone was obviously working... still no luck. In the end, she even scrolled through, trying to guess which name in Contacts belonged to the guy in the photo. She tried a few at random. None of them rang.
Sveta huffed, taking a seat in a corner, as far away from people as possible, and settled down to wait.

Sveta walked Akshay to the clinic's door, and he handed her a phone. She glanced at the screen as it lit up - and was surprised to see a photo of Akshay and another man, holding a very small child.
Oh.
Sooo... sure, she had not seen him for a while, but she didn't realized how long until it dawned on her that the nerdy guy from the comic book shop had a family. It made Sveta feel... old? Out of touch? The other guy, probably the husband or boyfriend, was cute too in his own way, and the kid was a darling, but for a moment, Svetlana was not sure how to react, or whether to react at all, to the news in the family.
>>”Dial 0-3-11… When operator picks up, just… ...ask for Conners. I-I’ll take it from there.”
Oh, right. Emergency call.
"Cute kid." Sveta dialed the number and held the phone to her ear as they walked through the clinic's automatic doors. She glanced around for the nearest seat, in case people did not notice immediately that she was walking a bleeding person inside. The phone beeped.
This number is not registered in the system. Please check to see if you dialed the right number, and try again.
Sveta muttered some curse words, checked, and tried again.
"Are you sure that's the right number? 0311? Because it's not recognized." she said, turning to Akshay. Some nurses noticed them and came running, drawing Sveta's attention away from the phone. "He fell... from a building." she told them, for lack of a better explanation "His shoulder is dislocated, and he had a glass shard in his side. I stopped the bleeding." that last part sounded more than a little apologetic, as she got some glares from the nurses. She was not supposed to do that, she knew. Well, it was done now. She turned back to Akshay, who was being helped onto a gurney "Anyone else I should try calling?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Akshay tried to stand on his own and failed. Sveta moved to his side, helping him stand, first against the wall, and then on his two wobbly feet. He was definitely not going to make it far from where they stood; he was just lucky that he managed to land both near her and near a free clinic. It was probably not planned that way, but they had to be grateful for small blessings.
"Easy. No hurry." she muttered, making sure she only touched him through her gloves and clothes. No need to overboost the guy.
>>”T-Thank you……um, I…I don’t know your name.”
"Svetlana. Sveta. I came into your shop once." he had to be really out of it to not remember... but then again, they had only met once, a while ago. There was no reason for him to recall her name, especially with all the pain and the blood loss. Sveta took on some of the man's weight as he dug into the pouch for a pill that she assumed was a painkiller. He probably needed it, if he was going to walk with her.
>>”And…which way…to the clinic?”
"This way." Sveta walked Akshay out of the alley and down the street a little ways. There were not many people around this time of the way, and the ones that passed them did not pay much attention. Most of them probably assumed he was drunk, and even the ones that noticed the blood probably assumed they were dealing with some gang violence, and merely quickened their steps.
"Almost dere" Sveta huffed as they turned another corner; the clinic's door was just ahead now. "Is there anyone you would like me to call for you?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
>>“Ah yeah. I’d like to do that more, please. Your help with that blizzard was more than I could have hoped for. You likely saved me from a severe migraine or worse, let alone what you did for the city.”
"It was nice to help without fighting anyone, for once." Sveta grinned at Devon as he splashed into the pool. That was one of the things she liked the most about working for Haven: She could use her powers without putting on the vigilante costume, and boost mutants who helped people in ways other than chasing criminals. Not that she did not enjoy taking down a bad guy or two occasionally... but it did suck as a full time job.
She watched as Noel left the pool to grab some food and drinks, and went to refill her own glass as well. She noted the scars on the other woman. It looked like they had more things in common than just their powers; Sveta had her own fair share of scars as well, everything from cuts to a bullet hole. It looked like Devon had a type when he collected allies. Nothing new.
>>"Not swimming, Svetlana?"
"I should" the blonde chuckled, setting her drink down at the edge of the pool "How often do I get invited to a private pool party anyway?" she teased before she slipped into the water, enjoying the coolness on her skin. She still had her gloves on, but it was nice not to have to worry about bumping into others. The pool was big enough. "I'd be suspicious why Devon decided to have the two of us here, but then again, it's Devon." she chuckled. The guy was not capable of being shady. He was too much of an idealist for that.
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Akshay was still in a lot of pain, but at least he could answer questions now. That meant he was not passing out, which was good, because Sveta doubted that she could carry him far enough if he did. She finished putting the bandages on and sighed, shrugging back into her jacket to look less underdressed. Standard issue? What, was he working for the government now? Military? MRC? Sveta wondered what made the cute nerdy guy go for a job like that. Maybe they took note of his powers? Those were all questions for later, but that did not mean they did not keep buzzing in the back of her mind as she took stock of his other injuries.
>>”No sh*t… Mutant. Knocked me away. H-How…far…are we from… …Madison Square Park?”
Sveta's eyes widened at the question. Whatever mutant had done this... that was one hell of a fall.
"Umm... whoa. Akshay, we are in Harlem."
Being knocked across half of Manhattan. She needed to now who did that, if for nothing else, then for safety reasons. Sveta shook her head. Later.
"Your shoulder is out of its socket, and I don't think you want me to put it back in." she noted practically. She might do more damage than good. It was not always as easy as it looked on movies, and there was no need for her to try if she could find a professional. Which she had a good idea about. "Dere is a clinic just around the corner, I can get you there. Can you stand if I help you?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
>>"Ha! The hype is you? I thought I was just really nervous."
"Dat's me" Sveta grinned, splashing her feet in the water as she sipped her drink. Some people never truly realized that the buzz came for her; not everyone reacted to it as strongly as Devon did. He got positively bouncy every time he was around her. Which was kind of funny, from a guy like him. Especially because he also tended to talk a lot...
>>"Wow, now that’d be a kiss to, er… remember? Or not. You might also be able to recall memories easier, even your own? Or maybe retain them differently? With Secret Keeper you three might be able to lock some memories in place… At least that’s my hope. I’d love if we could help Noel retain some memories, hold them in place. Should she want to try anyway but that’s up to you both. I mean I wanted you both to meet anyway.”
Okay, so Noel did not only mess with memories... she also lost some of her own. That had to suck. There were parts of the past that Sveta did not like to remember, but it was still better than having a hole in her mind, or not knowing what happened to her, and what happened to someone else. The possibilities were interesting though, and Devon clearly had a knack for connecting mutants whose powers were likely to work well together in some way. Had he been a bad guy, it would have made him very dangerous. Especially with Sveta at his side.
>>"But, really, you guys don't have to worry about mass memory loss even if you're a booster, Svetlana. I can't look everybody in the city in the eyes all at once and it doesn't work on camera. Sounds like the worst that would happen... Well, no offense, but the worst might just be that I'd get all of your memories. And that could happen anyway. If I closed my eyes and we touched, I'm pretty sure absolutely nothing would happen."
"Still, let's not try." Sveta suggested with a smile, raising her glass to Noel "I like you, but I only experiment in a controlled environment. Learned dat the hard way..." She, and half the city. Yet another memory she did not want Noel to borrow.
>>“Sorry, I always get spinning about what could be, how abilities work, how might they grow… If you ever train with me, you’ll get tired of it, I’m sure. And I can be talkative at the best times, let alone with Muse nearby. She so inspires me,”
Sveta scoffed at the pun. No one had called her that for quite a long time. She liked the nickname, and now that she worked for Haven, she considered picking it up again. It was only fitting, for the positive work they were doing around here...
"I try my best."
>>"Anyway, all of that to say, Svetlana, I can pick up Russian without having to touch you at all. If you're bored some day. Hit me up. All we'd have to do is share a drink."
"I'll pick you up on dat later." she nodded. It would have been nice to have someone speak with her in Russian. It had been a while. Noel went for a swim across the pool, possibly to get away from the buzz. When she emerged, she did not seem too impressed with Devon's idea of training.
>>"Gonna go out on a limb and say me an' Svetlana both train everything except our powers, Hadden."
"Mine are not very trainable" Sveta added with a nod "Believe me I tried. De best to do is to train with each person I'd work with, to make sure dey know how it works, what dey can use it for, and what to be careful about... It's individual training, mostly."

The scream jolted Svetlana out of her daze, and she struggled to sit up, looking past the METAbot that had turned its focus back to Agnes once again. There was a splitting, drumming headache that only got worse with the piercing scream - but the fog also cleared fast as a burst of adrenaline coursed through Sveta's veins at the sound of her friend's pain. Agnes was in trouble, she was hurt, she was...
She was...
Svetlana's eyes widened in horror as she watched her friend's transformation. What had been Agnes got ripped apart in front of her eyes in a nightmarish display of some ancient horror, and from the blood a large, insect-like creature was born, surrounded by swarms of insects of the real kind, and made quick work of the METAbot. Other people were screaming and fleeing now, and in the back of her mind, even as she could not tear her gaze away from the Queen, Sveta knew that she was not going to get a good night's sleep ever again.
She struggled to draw in a breath, and at the same time fight back things that wanted to crawl their way up her throat - a scream, or her lunch, or maybe both. Scrambling back she flattened her back against the brick wall as she watched the insect mutant turn her way and... declare her potential food.
Oh no. No.
"Agnes!" Sveta hurried to get the words out, holding up a hand "Agnes, it's me, it's Sveta, we're friends, remember? You are safe now! There is no danger. You can stop. Agnes, please stop..."

Max moved smoothly and Sveta followed, light on her feet and keeping an ear out for trouble. The first hallway they turned to, after he carefully checked, was clear, and they moved on immediately. Sveta wondered if he also checked for traps, or if the map had already told him there were none; she felt her muscles tense from anticipation. Some enemies were human-like and had guns. Others might have been hidden. She let Max keep the lead, and turned sideways along the wall in case someone tried to sneak up on them from behind.
Max checked the next corner, but she could already hear the footsteps of more than one guard. He turned back to her and extended a hand, pointing up. He was going to use his powers. Sveta reached out with her free, gloved, hand, and took hold of his, her powers kicking in instantly to double his natural ability. She made sure she held on to the pistol, and pointed it away from the both of them.
This ride was about to get dizzying...

His name was Akshay. She remembered meeting him at a comic book shop, and having a fun conversation, with him showing off his word powers, which were definitely one of the most amusing mutations she had ever seen. But the goofy young guy she remembered war very far from this older, roughed up and bleeding version she had on her hands. Sveta was not the same person as she had been a couple of years ago either, but still, she wondered exactly what had happened to the nerdy guy to have him falling out of the sky like this...
Akshay yelled as she pulled the shard out, and Sveta bit her lips as she pressed on the shirt to keep the bleeding in check. There was a lot of pain in his voice, but no magical words came, which was good - he was holding on to his powers, at least. Fumbling, he handed her something.
>>”Bleeding stops…use these. Closes wound…”
Sveta arched an eyebrow at the pouch. She had one like it too, although bulkier and less professional-looking. She stopped carrying it the same time she stopped wearing the red mask when she went out at night.
"Field kit?" she blinked, taking out the suture bandages "Akshay, did you get into the vigilante business?..."
It would be just like him, being fond of superheroes and trying to use his powers for something like this...
>>”Hell of a f**king day…”
"Been dere, done dat" Sveta muttered, taking the shirt away to take a closer look at his cut. She was down to her bra, but her gloves were still on, so at least she did not have to worry about skin to skin contact for now. The cut looked less deep now that she wiped some of the blood off, but it was still serious. Svet began applying the bandages. "You are going to need medical attention. What the hell happened?..."

Booker made his way to the kitchen to whip up some breakfast (which, from the sound of it, involved some actual whipping). Sveta suddenly realized that she was hungry, so much so that she could feel her stomach growl. No wonder, after the, um, exercise they got last night... But still, now that the initial awkwardness was gone, her body reminded her that it was time for some sustenance. As Booker left and took his aura with him, Sveta could see her own powers hitting the girl sitting in front of her. Her coffee buzz was not nearly as brutal as touching would have been, but right out of an adapted range, it was definitely easy to sense.
>>”Yeah, wow. I could definitely use a bit of that getting out of bed in the morning.”
Sveta blinked, not sure if that was an innocent comment, or if the girl was still flirting with her. It was clear that she liked women, and just because a pretty blonde just walked out of her brother's bedroom, it didn't mean... Sveta shook her head. She was not good at guessing games. Maybe she could ask Agnes later about this flirting thing, she was bound to know...
>>”Like… you know… morning coffee.”
Well, that cleared things up.
"Oh." Sveta chuckled "Yes, it can be useful for people... and sometimes funny, when dey don't know what is causing it." Some people got jittery or hyper, just like coffee had different effects on different bodies.
Booker hollered from the kitchen for his sister, about serving the food. Sveta's ears perked up. She'd expected some light breakfast, but not really something that needed two people to be served... she turned her head towards the kitchen.
"He really likes cooking, doesn't he..."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
The man was definitely a goddamn catch is what he was. Sveta arched an eyebrow as yet another detail about him came to light, only adding to the frustratingly perfect image he already had. It was almost like someone was playing a joke on Sveta. The one good catch she found was the one she had no interest in dating. Go figure. Not to mention the nosy sister.
>>”Nope, garden-variety human, sadly. So… does that mean you’re a mutant?... Not that there’d be anything wrong with that. My ex-girlfriend was a mutant. Apparently, New York’s just filled to the brim with pretty mutants,”
Oh, there. They had something in common after all. The flirting. Svetawas not sure if it was intentional or not, but Nessa was definitely appreciative of pretty mutant women. She reminded her of Agnes for a moment there...
>>”Hey, Svetlana, are you allergic to anything? Last thing I want is to make you something that will kill you. Nessa…your usual rare, bloody steak and deep fried chicken?”
"Not allergic, no." Sveta chuckled, shaking her head at the banter between brother and sister. She had always been too protective of Bo to have this kind of a relationship with her... although she could not tell what it would be like now, if they met again. She had tried to contact her sister once or twice, but all she got through to was the Matchmaker, saying her sister was well cared for, as per agreement...
"I'm a mutant, yes." she nodded as Booker walked to the kitchen, trying to recall what she had told the guy about her mutation, as to not get caught in a lie "I have an aura... if he gets far enough you'll feel it. It's like coffee."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
The guy was in and out of consciousness, and all kinds of banged up, but it was definitely him. For a moment, Sveta was truly pissed at the universe, first because it kept throwing things like this at her when all she wanted was to work peacefully for Haven... and second, because this guy out of all guys did not deserve such crap to happen to him.
>>”F****************k… Arm…dis-dislocated…”
"Yah, I can see dat." Sveta frowned, looking at the odd angle his shoulder was in. She had seen that before, and it looked very painful. Also, she was in no way qualified to put it back in, even though she knew the theory.
>>”S-Something…in my side… Take…it out… P…lease…”
Something was in his side all right. It looked like a shard of glass, but it was hard to see from all the blood. One thing Sveta knew about injuries like that, one was not supposed to take the foreign object out... There was also the issue of her touching him. Since he was definitely a mutant. She remembered him showing her his weird powers...
"Okay, um..." a moment of inspiration struck "Akshay, was it? Did I get that right?" she hoped she did, there was no need to add casual racism to the conversation "If I'm gonna take dat thing out I'm gonna have to touch you." she added, shrugging out of her jacket and taking off her shirt. The jacket was made of leather, but the shirt was cotton, and at least partially capable of stopping the bleeding. "Try to keep a grasp on your powers, okay?" hopefully, she'd only touch him for a moment. Or rather, the shard. She didn't even know if that counted as contact... Taking a deep breath, Sveta grabbed the shard in one hand and the bunched-up shirt with the other. "Here we go." She pulled, and once the shard came free, she pushed the shirt to the wound. It soon turned red.

The one time Svetlana was not in an alleyway looking for trouble, it came crashing through a window to find her anyway. Quite. Literally.
She had only stepped around the corner to make a phone call in relative peace and quiet, away from the screaming New York traffic... but just as she was about to dial, there was a deafening crash, and a body came hurtling through space out of nowhere, colliding with the asphalt before rolling into a window panel and then commencing to bleed copiously.
"SH*T."
At first, Svetlana thought the guy might have jumped, or fallen, from the roof... but looking up, she knew the fall would have killed him straight away, and he would not have skidded to such a painful halt like he did. Sveta knew about physics enough to see the difference. Pushing her phone back into her pocket, she hurried over to the limp figure by the wall. It was a young guy, definitely worse for the wear from the fall, but at least halfway conscious. Sveta crouched, careful not to be quite in arm's reach, and took a closer look at his injuries. And then his face.
"Uh... hey!" she said, half in sudden realization that she had met this guy before... a long time ago, what was his name again?... Also, he needed to stay awake, she knew that much about trauma. "Hey, nerdy words guy! Stay awake!"
