The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Susan watched, tilting her head curiously as Pluto walked over to the kid and helped her to some extra stuffed toys. It wasn't an impressive way of demonstrating his strength, but she suspected anything more violent would have gotten them kicked out of the diner. She wouldn't have blamed them for it either. “I can do that with anything…literally anything. I could have thrown that spoiled little blond to the moon." And a smile. Susan returned it. She had a very similar image in her mind. “How about you? If the color change is a side dish, what’s the main course?” "As I said..." she stopped there as she realized not everyone would be familiar with the scientific term for her ability. The fact that she looked it up doesn't mean it was well known to other mutants too. "... I have the ability to..." she was trying to keep Latin out of the definition "... switch my five senses with each other. When my eyes change color, that means I am doing something else with them besides seeing." she was kind of proud of herself, being able to explain it "I can see sounds and taste colors and... all the other combinations. It takes a lot of concentration. Also, sometimes I just.... switch without noticing it." She stopped, wondering about a way to illustrate what she just said, but she had to realize it wasn't easy. "I would demonstrate it if I could, but from the outside it really isn't all that interesting."

Pluto was entertaining. Susan would have never though she could have fun minutes after she found out she had a genetic mutation and was rescued from exorcism by someone who looked like a demon. All right, so her mind was running in circles now. Just great. "I am willing to bet though that there is more to you the prismatic eyes just as there is much more to me then red flesh and a tail.” That sounded positively interesting. Mysterious, even. Susan waited with the question till they got through ordering - she barely had any past experience with junk food. Lucky for her, the smell of the slices provided more than enough information about the taste to decide on. With that part (ham and pineapple pizza and coke) done, she followed Pluto to a table. "Technically, my eyes are not prizmatic. It's just the side effect of synestesia." she explained as she poked the pizza with knife and fork "It's the only visible sign of my... mutation...?" she was not sure about the term. Grammatically, yes. Really? No. "So, what else can you do?" she asked, looking at him.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare either of you. I mean you no harm." "I...I'm sorry. Don't be freaked out. I'm very sorry. You startled me. I didn't mean to be rude. I really didn't." Susan turned her head, looking at the gargoyle and the girl with the Medusa hair. A smile tugged at her lips. "So, we can all agree nobody wants to hurt anyone. Perfect." she announced, putting her flute away as she stood up from the bench and walked over to them. "My music never had an effect quite this curious before" she added. True, she learned to play a flute because of the Pied Piper, but she never thought a simple tune would lure a gargoyle and a gorgon to her. She wondered if it was a coincidence. It probably was. Looking at them again, her eyes turned back to crimson for a couple of seconds. No doubt. They both had the same aura she was starting to identify with the X gene. Of course, there was no proof. But based on her experiences so far, it made sense. "I'm Henrrietta" "My name is Susan" she answered politely, glancing at the gargoyle, wondering if he had a name too "And I am a mutant like you two. Obviously."

"Of course! Just your vanilla human here." Susan raised an eyebrow. Either that was another figure of speech she was not familiar with, or... She wondered if other people messed up their senses sometimes too. "You just seem..." taste smell sound feel "... different." She shook her head. Now that she said it out loud it didn't make any sense to her either. Everyone was different, in her way of perception. There were just too many options to vary. "But no, not vanilla." she mused, glancing at her "Not really. It's more like... some kind of... um..." Exotic fruit? Tropical flower? How the heck was she supposed to know? She never smelled (tasted heard saw touched) any of those. "Nevermind."

"It's an expression. It means until you are ready to be on your own in this savage world. Like you find your feet so you can stand up, I think, is the reasoning behind it." Susan watched her feet as she walked beside Elli, hands deep in her pockets and scarf pulled up to her nose. To avoid attention. She blinked the colors away too. She'll need sunglasses. In winter. She was wondering how to ask the question. It had to be subtle, politically correct and the least awkward possible. She was not good at any of these. "Um..." It was not easy. Dealing with synestesia messed up her perception of the world so bad she couldn't even think of an explanation for whatever she was... sensing. Or even pinpoint the way or the sense she was using to sense it. Troublesome. "Are you sure you are human?" Not bad. It could be interpreted in a lot of different ways, eg.: You are too nice to a stranger to be true. You are weird. I think you are a mutant. You are too helpful to a mutant not to be one yourself. You look like an alien. You smell funny. Susan frowned. She hoped Elli wouldn't be offended by the question. But she had to ask. That opalescent... whatever it was was poking at her senses. It had to be something.

There was a lull in the music; the last note was a snowflake, drifting down to the ground. Susan lowered the flute and looked around, more than a bit embarrassed - she didn't usually play music in public. If you could count the empty park 'public' at all. She was pretty sure she was alone. Until she heard the clapping. "That was wonderful... Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt, please, don't mind me, I was just curious is all." She looked up and across the path. The bushed had lost their leaves long ago, and now were packed with snow; there was something - someone? - large behind them, but she couldn't make out who - or what? - it was. Her eyes shifting to crimson in the shadow of her hood, the world turned shades of blue and green once again. Any living person would stand out like a lamppost in the dark, glowing red and orange with body heat. Well, except for him. Susan let out a surprised gasp. She could see the outlines of a body - a very strange body - among the bushes, but it was barely yellowish-green instead of fire-colored. A normal person with a body that could would be dead, or nearly dead. Definitely not talking and clapping. Not to mention the shape she saw - when touching with her eyes, she didn't see shapes all that clearly, but she could make out the wings and the horns just fine. What was it with her meeting creatures out of Medieval paintings all the time?... The person - supposing it was a person - had the same opalescent aura about him she'd already seen on a couple of 'special' people - mutants, like herself. Oh. That would make sense. "...Hello?" She caught the other person out of the corner of her eye - she was definitely alive, glowing happy cherry-red and orange, with pinkish shades around her nose and fingers. Susan wondered if the music attracted her too. Or if she had any idea what she was walking towards. Crimson eyes narrowing, she tilted her head. Wait a minute... Her next breath floated into the air, fading from pink to white and blurring her vision; she blinked, and looked again, and no doubt: the girl was glowing mutant-colored as well. Well well well... Susan gulped. She was pretty sure she was supposed to say something. It was her music that brought them here after all. "You can come out." she announced, looking at the person among the bushes "I am not going to hurt you." Hopefully you are not going to hurt us either.

Snow was a most peculiar thing. Not like Susan hadn't seen (or experienced) snow before. The Hydes always made sure they presented their children with all the perfect little details of childhood - and snow was one of them. Too bad Susan preferred to stay inside and thus avoid being hit by snowballs and other annoying wintertime projectiles. But now that her unique Susan-way of perceiving the world was in full swing... Snow was beautiful.
It had been snowing for the better part of the day, and unlike the snow of the days before, this one stuck around. Now that evening was falling and people took their children home for dinner, Central Park was quiet, calm, and white. For the eyes of a human. The tiny black dot that was a teenage witch (wrapped in a black coat with a huge hood, black-and-white striped gloves and boots with purple fur) occupied a par bench off the beaten paths in the snow. Elli was studying very hard at home, and she didn't want to disturb her; even though she was not the noisy kind, Susan could tell her brand new roommate needed her time alone, this close to her exams. So she went for a walk, and ended up in Central Park, alone with the twilight and the falling snow. She was proud of her brand new and effective display of empathy.
Have you ever heard the sound of falling snow? Have you ever seen it? The world through Susan's momentarily black eyes was an elaborate impressionist painting of soft blues and whites; fluffy eruptions of sound-sparks when a snowflake landed on her coat or on the ground. If was calm, but not quiet. And nothing, compared to the picture she saw as her eyes drifted into crimson. The cold world around her suddenly colored over with all the possible shades of blue and glass-green; the only thing that stood out in this background was her own breaths, in small orange-and-red puffs of smoke, rapidly fading through the rainbow scale to light purple and then white. She breathed in, and breathed out again; anybody else would have only seen white clouds of breath. For her, it was waaay more addictive than actual smoking.
Susan didn't hum. She didn't have a good voice. But even for her practical and composed self, the evening beauty of the park called for music, so she pulled out Frost - the flute she bought for herself a few years back - and played a soft tune. Blue and evening-purple notes lifted into the air and mingled with the sound of the falling snow.
((OOC: yes I borrowed the flute's name from the Fables novel. Susan loves the Pied Piper story ))

“I saved you from a musical. I think I should be knighted.” Susan's lips curled into a smile as the couple hurried away; there was a definite aura of fright around them, made up from sharp intakes of breath, cold hands and faces, and muttered prayers against the devil. Against which devil - the big red one or his new friend with the pitch black eyes - they did not specify. "I'm sorry, I cannot knight you" she sighed, blinking her extra senses away once again "I am not a certified lady yet. Not to mention I've never been noble. And pizza sounds good." She caught up to him, almost running to keep the pace. She realized she felt more comfortable walking down the street with Pluto than she'd ever felt with her classmates. Not to mention safe. "So, you are saying that the same gene is responsible for my synesthesia and you looking like someone out of the bad boys of the Bible?" she asked with scientific curiosity "How common is it?..."

Susan shrugged as she took the card from him. Since when did demon-like mutants carry cards anyway?... "We were going to see some stupid musical. After they got the demon out of me, I suppose. I should be grateful to you for saving me the boredom." Reading the card and listening to his explanation, she couldn't help but feel more than a little bit lost. "I work with a mutant run clinic that serves the community equally. So, if you need any help I can probably get you where you need to go. If of course you want, or need to go anywhere at all." She nodded slowly. "I guess I should... go somewhere. I'd prefer not to go back to the school just yet..." Looking up at Pluto, her eyes narrowed; she fought back half a switch as the strange opalescent color started to swirl around his form once again. She blinked the vision away. Maybe later. "Um. Do you... could you take me somewhere where we could discuss this whole mutant issue?... If you have time for me, that is." she added a bit awkwardly. She didn't really know how to talk to a strange man, let alone a strange man with red skin and a tail, called Pluto. That was never included in the Etiquette curriculum. Too bad.

Susan had been shopping. In downtown New York. That was a first. She figured since she was officially on the run, living in an almost-police-officer's apartment, she now possessed some privileges that were denied back in school. Or at 'home'. Privileges such as... dressing like a normal person. She borrowed clothes from Elli. Also, sunglasses. That should do the trick. A Susan-in-jeans must have sounded more crazy to anyone who knew her than a Susan-with-green-tentacles. She spent the whole day wandering from one shop to another, feeling more lost than she'd ever been. She forgot about time - probably this was the main reason why stepping out of the umpteenth shop she suddenly realized it was dark outside and all the lights were on. She could have suspected that. The shop was already closing up. The manager shot her a few annoyed glances during the last half hour. Quite a few. Making her way back to Elli's apartment, she decided not to cut through Central Park. She was a mutant, but in the past few days she familiarized herself with the terms 'passive' and 'active' mutation, and also with the fact her abilities had no use in any physically threatening situation, except for scaring a person with the eye color change. Fat chance, huh. All right, she didn't like parks after dark. At all. Blame it on the boarding school and the overprotective foster parents. Taking the long way towards the other side of the park, Susan was deep in thought; she only recognized the police car sirens when their unique blue and red sounds enveloped her. They were still far away, but the light already hurt her sharpened senses; she slipped into her own little world of colorful sounds, and the darkness of the night was suddenly dotted with car engine waves, fluttering voices and all the sounds of a city at night. Even in this world, the park seemed dark. Susan walked away from the police cars in an unhurried manner. If she had to choose between a park at night and St. Joan's at broad daylight... Park it is.

"Nonsense, just because I'm human doesn't mean I can't use the internet as well as you do. And I know a few people, I can call in some favors if you need it. I am glad to be able to help someone find their feet, especially someone in a situation like yours." Susan blinked. "I know where my feet are." she pointed that out. There wasn't anything wrong with her feet. Her senses, on the other hand... Her eyes went black as their surrounding suddenly started to swim with colors. There were the metallic-silver streaks and swirls of cars, the rainbow raindrops of shoes tapping against the sidewalk, the numberless shades of the human voice and the faint blueish tint of the autumn wind. It was a wholly different world, and Susan allowed herself to marvel for a moment or two before turning back to Elli, blinking the sounds away. The blonde girl had a faint, opalescent humming about her. Shaking her head, Susan sighed. "You are a very curious person, Elli Fletcher." It was not respect. It was not critique. It was not friendliness. It was just the way it was.

"Oh! No, I was shadowing an officer, and there was a disturbance that involved a mutant..." The bitterness was still there, it could be heard, it could be tasted. Susan wrinkled her nose and licked her lips, trying to get rid of it. Having an ability like hers resulted in some experiences getting too close for comfort. She tried to not wonder what happened to the mutant. Or the officer. "Yeah, I see what you mean. Sometimes I'm that way also. Well, if you need help, let me know." There she goes again. Curious. Susan was used to putting people into neat little boxes - mostly into 'Idiot - try to ignore' and 'Overly friendly - try to ignore'. Officer Pretty-and-Cheerful here defied both categories, and would not be ignored. "You are already helping me more than you should." she pointed that out awkwardly "And you are a human, so there is only so much you can do about my condition. Um. I would appreciate it if you could maybe help me contact others like me. And of course I am grateful that you let me stay with you." she added that last part with some hesitation, hoping it was the proper formula for situations like this. One could never be sure.

"Yeah, the Police Academy of NYC. It's where I go to school. God, I can't wait until I graduate." Susan nodded. "I see. What I meant was... how does one meet mutants through the NYC police academy?..." She wondered if mutants were really this commonplace in the outside world (meaning everything beyond the St. Joan's walls), and if they were, why on Earth didn't she find out about them sooner. She could never understand what most of her teachers had against genetics. Question of the year, huh. "You mentioned you were doing research. What kind of research? Maybe I could help you with that, once finals are done with." Susan smirked. Research she was good at. It was another term for 'leave me alone'. "They never mentioned the existence of mutants at my school. If I want to find out more about my... abilities, I basically have to start from scratch... my foster parents often accuse me of withdrawing into the world of books instead of dealing with reality. I guess they are right too." she admitted. Even though that was before reality got sooo much more interesting.

"Both. Like Cafas, the eye-color guy, was just complete accident. But there was this other guy who could manipulate ice. He I met through the Academy. And a guy who could control coins..." Susan listened with curiosity. Considering the rarity of the X gene, there seemed to be quite a few mutants around. They just... showed up at the most curious times and places. She wondered if it had anything to do with the mutation itself. Maybe in some cases is did. Manipulating ice? It sounded fascinating. The scientific part of Susan's brain jumped into calculating the possibilities of controlled body heat, and... Stop. Rewind. "Academy?..." She could taste the bitterness about Elli's last comment about coins or whatever, but it tasted strange enough for her to do what she always did in awkward conversations: she pretended the topic never came up. Whatever made Elli sad about that particular mutant, Susan did not insist she shared the information.

"Must be kind of dissapointing to find out something else, huh? Yeah, I feel your pain, kid. I mean, I'm human, but I've got problems aplenty." Susan cast a sideways glance at Elli. Right. What kind of problems could a girl like Elli possibly have?... She decided it wouldn't be a logical move to ask. Maybe later. "Well, genetic mutation makes more sense than sorcery." she admitted "And not having to deal with the supernatural is a plus. It's just a pity that... this could not wait a couple of months more." Not like she loved going to St. Joan's. She really didn't. But being alone with her new powers would have been a lot less stressful after graduation. Susan was the kind of girl who hated the idea of giving up when the finish line was already in sight. Not to mention not having to hide from her legal guardians. The blue of Elli's dress hummed a cheerful little tune as they walked. It was backed up by some kind of ticking, buzzing noise that had nothing to do with the color. Susan shook her head and resisted the urge to put a finger into her ear. "You mentioned you have met other mutants. Was it... inside your line of work, or just accidents like me?"
