The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Apparently Aurum had decided to no longer rise to her bait. That was disappointing and Riley mourned the loss of the ability to get under his skin. It was fun, and easy, and it had been a really nice way to pass the time while she waited for the other guy to come back. Stupid Aurum and his one word, no-fun answers. Riley frowned a bit at how familiar she’d suddenly become and then frowned more as he agree with her statement that he’d blanketed everyone important when he’d mentioned mutants and humans. Again…not his fault that he was ignorant…but somehow it was easier to blame him a little.
A manager showed up, barking orders at Aurum, then turning to walk away. It took Riley a moment to digest what the harridan had said, and then she nearly paled visibly. The other guy had food poisoning. Aurum was taking over at the check-out…he would be the one who sold Riley the romance novel.
She wanted to scream in frustration, all that hard work, completely down the drain. The subject had been changed…this had been going excellently. Had. She hung her head as he shut down the little coffee bar and made his way to the front of the store. She followed, like a convict being led to execution…because he was going to rake her over the coals for this…especially after all of her teasing about strippers.
They got to the counter and Riley stood there, book still concealed as she looked for a last ditch effort to escape the inevitable ringing up. There was nothing. Nothing to help her. So, Riley raised her chin, marched up to the counter as soon as Aurum was ready, and plopped the book right down in front of him…almost daring him to say something about her choice of reading materials. There would be no excuses, Riley didn’t need any.

Riley smirked slightly at the look on Aurum’s face. She’d caught him off guard, and shocked him a little. Good. She didn’t want him to think he was getting the upper hand. Whether Aurum was a lawyer-in-training or not, Riley was going to come out on top of the conversation. Was she really thinking about Aurum as a stripper? Unless he wanted to laugh in his face, no. No she wasn’t. ”Oh don’t be so uptight about it. There’s worse things you could be. If the lawyer thing doesn’t work out, I could give you the name of this guy I know. You’d make a fortune.” Perfect. The last thing he’d be thinking about was her book.
The happy smirk slid from Riley’s features though, at his next comment. There was no way he knew what she was or what she could do. Lori and Lenna hadn’t said enough to clue him in, but still. He’d said it. She didn’t snap, she didn’t snark, she simply let out little ‘heh’ at his words. He didn’t know, and ignorance really was bliss, but the wind was already gone from her sails.
”Well, that’s everyone important, isn’t it?” she said, a slight, tight smile turning up the corners of her lips and Riley nodded towards the bag and donut. ”I should probably eat that some time.”

Somehow the smiling was less awkward than the constant ire, so Riley stuck with it. She wasn’t going to start talking about the book again. There was only so much she could make up about a non-existent book on the pin-up industry in New York City. While she knew a fair amount, Riley wasn’t an expert…she’d never cared to be, the excuse had simply been the first thing to pop into her head.
Annnnd Aurum had simply applied to get his job here. There was no long, funny story to segue into another cute funny story. Riley almost frowned, but instead focused on the comments coming from the golden-boy’s mouth. Another woman might have bristled at what sounded like insinuation, Riley knew exactly what Aurum was talking about though and simply laughed and shook her head.
”You have to admit. That was pretty good…and believable.” she said with a cavalier toss of her head and a slightly satisfied smirk. ”And I’m glad you don’t discriminate here. It would be a shame. You don’t see very many places like this. I’ll bet you pull an interesting crowd considering the fact that the big chains sell thing cheap and fast…and so much of New York is…well…cheap and fast.”

Riley was going to answer Aurum’s question. Who was condescending? He was. Riley almost smiled at his surprise…he would be surprised by the fact. He was an idealist! He was a genuinely nice guy! There was no possible way he could be condescending. She opened her mouth to say exactly what she was thinking…and Aurum owned his condescension, resulting in Riley’s mouth being stuck open as she stood at the counter.
She stood that way for a second, while he admitted that maybe he was a little…pointed out that she was mean to him every time they met, and apologized for anything he might have done beyond her preconceived notions because of Lonnie. Dammit. He was right. Again. It was absolutely infuriating!
”Defensive…I can understand.” she said, the closest she would get to admitting that she’d treated him poorly when maybe…just maybe he didn’t deserve all the ire. ”And if not work….”
Aurum suggested that maybe she needed her book rung up soon and Riley subconsciously hid the thing more thoroughly under her arm. The last thing she needed was for Aurum to see her reading a silly romance novel. Why she cared what he thought, Riley didn’t know…but after the progress she’d made with his condescending nature…it just wouldn’t do.
”This really is a nice place.” she said, looking around, the sarcastic twist leaving her mouth as she looked around the little shop, ”And I’ve got quite a while until my next job today. I was going to stick around…unless, of course, my kind aren’t welcome here.” The words weren’t sarcastic, they were filled legitimate humor that he could hopefully hear…anything to move the topic of conversation away from the book she had.
”I think I could easily stick around until he comes back.” she added, in reference to the slob at the check-out, smiling like it was the best idea in the world, ”How does a baby-lawyer end up with a job here anyway?” More deflection from the book. More deflection was good.

Ugh. Riley wondered why she felt like she’d kicked a puppy when Aurum sighed and asked that they not talk about Lonnie. He looked away for the first time too. Damn. Maybe she was being just a little bit bitter…and a little unfair, as much as she hated to admit it.
Apparently working with the man was as much hell as dealing with him in court. Riley couldn’t exactly empathize, but she did sigh and nod her head. ”You make a fair point.” she said, not feeling the least bit guilty about the point she’d pushed so far, but having enough grace to know when to stop.
She sipped her coffee, then pursed her lips before smiling and snagging the bag with the pastry inside.
”Well, if I can’t be bitter, and you can’t be condescending…I’m just not sure we have anything left to talk about.” she said, then raised an eyebrow, almost daring him to say otherwise.

Why all the puppy hate? Riley shrugged, ”Puppy is a metaphor. For all the pristine, innocent, people they’re going to make you kick. I figured they’d get you used to that before sending you into the field. Or do they leave that for later? As something to get your feet wet?”
Riley didn’t like the way he was looking at her. It was so…judgemental. How dare he do that? She was just here to get a book, he was the one who’d initiated conversation. Riley cursed herself, thinking how much better things would have been if she’d simply ignored him.
Aurum pointed out that he was glad she’d found work, and Riley opened her mouth to tell him right where he could shove his condescending concern. She didn’t want it, and she didn’t need it. She looked at the pastry he’d put on the counter. She didn’t want the coffee anymore, or the pastry. This was why she disliked him so much. Nobody was as nice as he tried to act sometimes. It all came back to condescension and true colors.
”Thanks.” she said tightly, ”I guess you’re still getting coffee for Lonnie? Until the big test?”

He…was there for the movie…no wife and kids to escape from, no homelessness to escape the cold from. Maybe he was a serial killer. Riley looked the guy up and down again, hadn’t she read in a book somewhere that serial killers were usually charismatic men in their 30’s who liked to be loners? Something about that didn’t fit with the conversations they’d had, but the dark haired woman reminded herself of American Psycho and Searching for Mr Goodbar, more movies to be applied to real life. Creepy movies.
Oh. That’s right. She had invited him. The likeliness of him being a serial killer lessened slightly. That still didn’t make up for the artful way he’d dodged her question about why he was at the movies. Nobody went to a movie simply to watch a movie, but as he complemented her taste, Riley found herself mollified….a task that was not completely very easily once she got her hackles up. He was telling the truth though, not flattering. ”I know.” she said, without a hint of arrogance, also stating a simple fact.
He’d taken the popcorn, but Riley didn’t know how to go about getting it back at the moment. It was a predicament…one that would have to be solved after Bogart stopped being amazing on the screen. The scene lulled and Riley took the opportunity to speak again.
”Wouldn’t it be a hoot if people were like this in real life?” she said, nodding towards the big screen, ”All hard boiled stuff. I guess that’s part of the appeal for things like this. Getting to escape the real world for a while, going to a totally different time and place and getting immersed.”
She paused and thought for a few moments, ”I think that’s part of what’s so great about this place. As shabby as it looks with the lights on…it’s almost easy to forget what it is once they dim.”

”Oh? You can see why I would enjoy it?” Riley said, with the feeling that were she standing she’d have firmly planted her hands on her hips and given her companion similar raised eyebrow look to the one he was getting now. Was he implying that she adored the movie because of its fluffy sentimentality? The left-field romance between wealthy business owner and chauffer’s daughter? The way that vibrant and flighty Sabrina was able to thaw Linus’ cold heart? It definitely wasn’t any of those things, and it wasn’t the way that Linus chased her back to France…to Paris…to prove he was the man for her.
Definitely not. Those were the things a hopeless romantic would have loved in a movie…and they’d well established that Riley was anything but that. Still…he said he’d recommend the movie to his movie buff friends…he couldn’t have thought it was too much of a chick flick of that was the case.
He said he could respect people and Riley wondered about that, she wondered about a lot of things.
”So why do you really come here?” she asked, knowing what her answer would be, but not sure she’d share it if asked. The popcorn left her hands, taking a place in the seat next to her as she moved her arms to rest her wrists on her knees. This was the part where he revealed that he was here to escape the rigorous life of a happily married father of four. This was the part where she could stop being nice…but he had to answer the question first.

Oh damn. There she was, impressed again. Riley squinted into the dark. Where was his third eye? There had to be something, Riley squinted towards his hand…the wedding ring. Where was the wedding ring? Riley knew it had to be there. No ring there…and in the dark she couldn’t tell if there was a tan line. It would figure…or maybe he was gay, looking for a girlfriend to shop and watch movies with. No, that didn’t make sense either…but there had to be something…
Riley realized her line of thinking and shook it off…it wasn’t like she was actually interested or anything. They were just watching silly movies in a crappy old theater. It was a good time, but nothing more.
He gave his name. ”Ashton.” she repeated, then reached up and pushed back her hood. ”I’m Riley.” she said, still impressed that he’d seen Sabrina.
”Did you actually like it?” she asked, curiously, ”It’s wildly different from most of the things that Bogart did…but he still fit the role so well. The awkward older workaholic...shouldering the responsibility so his brother could cavort. I never can decide which brother I like more.”
She paused for a moment and shrugged, ”I have to respect Sabrina though…” she said, and let the comment hang as the movie progressed and things that needed to be watched, needed watching. Besides, Riley had popcorn to eat, which she did with gusto. She’d given Ashton a great deal to think about, how would he reply?

He was amused…Riley hadn’t been joking, but whatever helped him get through is day. ”Good for the puppies. Even if it’s the sort of thing Lonnie is into…” she said.
His next comment was quick and the question at the end caught Riley by surprise. She opened her mouth to answer, surprise overriding her general defensiveness, but he interrupted before she had the chance. That was more like it. That was what she expected. What else had he said?
He was almost done with school, but had to take a big test to get his license. ”So, what’s the test? Is it some crazy blood ritual, some sacrifice to the sacred scales of Themis?” she paused, ”Is that where you kick the first puppy?”
Why was she teasing him? Because it bugged him. She knew it had to bother him when he was seen as something less than the genuinely nice guy he tried to be. He also seemed to think he could go toe to toe with her. He couldn’t. The cab ride didn’t count, she’d been off her game, too much had happened that night and he’d had the advantage of alcohol.
”And I have plenty of work…” she said, the unspoken no thanks to you hanging between them. ”I’m between shoots in fact. Two in one day.”
Did this count as a legitimate conversation? Riley didn’t know, but it just might have been better than sitting around for a few hours.

Dammit. He was reading her like one of the many well-placed books in the store. She could see it written all over his face when she fed him the tripe about what she’d been reading at the table. He didn’t pursue it though, and Riley hoped that she’d be able to pay for the silly thing without him seeing. She really did have to be more careful about where she bought the darn things.
She felt like a child, having to hide her reading tastes…but someone like Aurum, lots of people, expected someone like Riley to read romance novels. Besides, if she was being honest, it also made her feel like a hypocrite. What kind of person ran around in the real world…knew anything about the real world, then read romance novels like they were going out of style? It totally cramped the whole epic cynic thing she had going on. Besides, he wouldn’t understand if she tried to explain. He was an idealist. It made it easier to remember why she disliked him so much.
She smiled now, and took another sip of the coffee. ”That’s a shame.” she said with just a hint of malice. ”How’s that going? Still kicking puppies and all those fun lawyer things?” He’d given her good coffee, she could give him the gift of good conversation.

Offered to treat him? With the cab fare? ”More like I generously spared your life by getting you out of there.” she said, amusement written clearly on her face. It was true, Riley had seen the situation deteriorating quickly and Aurum had been the most unwelcome party, no matter how much he’d helped by carrying the unconscious woman. Riley knew how people like Lori worked, and whether he knew how much or not, she knew she’d done Aurum a huge favor. She didn’t know why, and she hadn’t had to…but she’d done it. Now, she was getting free food and coffee.
She told him to surprise her, and he actually seemed to enjoy the challenge. Riley frowned slightly, watching as he did an excellent job choosing. Crullers were delicious….even when they were bad.
A good one…damn. It would definitely cover the cab fare. She took a moment to remind herself that this was the same person who’d sat in a cab and spouted about the justice system, about how everyone deserved a fair chance, an idealist, a lawyer. He placed the pastry and the coffee on the table and she looked at them, debating whether or not she should even accept.
He had asked what she was reading, and mentioned Christie.
”Oh, uh.” she said, frantically casting around for something to say since he hadn’t seen the romance novel. What were some of the things she kept sitting around, or actually read to be able to talk about, ”I was just reading some non-fiction about the industry here in New York. I like to keep up on things like that.” While it was true, it definitely wasn’t what she’d been reading when Aurum had discovered her. She picked up the coffee and took a sip. It was good, it was real good…and perfect for a subject change.
”You are good at this.” she said, ”Are you sure that lawyer’ing is for you?”

Aurum arranged some pastries that looked really yummy as she approached. This close, he played it cool, no more snide comments about the fact that they were selling books here, not loaning them. Well, if he could play the civil game, she could too. One didn’t shun acquaintances, after all, even if they were less than desirable ones…especially if they made the first comment in a conversation.
He said he looked good in the apron and Riley shrugged her shoulders. She wasn’t going to disagree, the man could pull off forest green. ”Looking good in a uniform doesn’t mean you deserve it.” she said, leaning on the counter with her elbows.
He asked what she wanted, and Riley gave Aurum a skeptical look, was his offer sincere? She glanced at the menu, the prices were very reasonable. ”Carmel Latte. No extra sugar or anything.” she said. People who ordered coffee ‘skinny’ or ‘non fat’ made her sick. What was the point if coffee if you didn’t drink it right. “Right” wasn’t loading it up with sugar either. Coffee was supposed to be a little on the bitter side, it was what brought out the flavor.
”Your treat. You owe me a cab fare.” Just because they were being civil didn’t mean she wouldn’t bring it up.

The girl was standing on the horse, standing on the horse in the stable boy’s breeches and shirt. If that didn’t impress Paul…nothing would. Whitney didn’t care what the rest of the assembled people thought, and Elizabeth Ashton could simply bat her eyelashes straight to hell and back!
Riley actually smiled a little as she read, it was hard to work out whether the beginning, middle, or end of the book was her favorite…but they were all so good. Whitney was amazing, not giving two nickels what anyone thought of her….except Paul of course…an Riley couldn’t fault the girl. She was young, and she wanted the best that the world had to offer…and she eventually got it. Even if it wasn’t Paul. Even if she fought it tooth and nail for a long time.
The book was excellent, and Riley was happy with her choice…sometimes it was good to go back to the old favorites. She returned to the pages from her mental commentary and read a little faster…it was several chapters still before Whitney accompanied her Aunt and Uncle to France…where she met Clayton. A sigh escaped Riley at the mere thought of the Duke of Claymore…the masked man at the Armand’s Masque who got himself engaged to Whitney without her even knowing…such a good book. Such a nice little coffee shop and bookstore to read it in…such a nice…
The voice absolutely shattered her mood.
”Oh! I’m going to buy i….” she started, snapping the book shut and stowing it in her lap before her eyes fell on the owner of the voice who was skittering to hide behind the counter of the coffee bar. The instant she saw, and recognized him, the contrite tone of her voice changed and a small frown replaced the relaxed little smile that had been there before.
What was the lawyer boy doing behind the counter of a coffee shop, wearing an apron? A conversation in a cab came back to Riley, and she remembered that Aurum didn’t actually get paid for following Lonnie around like a kicked puppy. She also remembered that he’d stuck her with a cab fare, and had made her feel like a child being dressed down like an adult. Why did he have to be here?
Riley sighed, she wasn’t going to dignify him by getting up and leaving, but she couldn’t very well sit here and read a romance novel in front of the guy. It would confirm all the horrible things he already thought about her. Why Riley cared, she didn’t know. Still, she smirked. ”Nice apron.” she called, taking a moment to take in the uniform her wore. ”So this is what you do when you’re not playing lawyer.” she glanced around at the shop, unable to actually say any of the petty or mean things that came to mind, ”I have to admit…it’s a nice gig.”
Again, she glanced at the position he'd taken behind the bar. "Do you actually make coffee back there, or just use it as protection?"

Riley had to admit, she loved a man who knew his classic films, and her film buddy sure seemed to know what he was talking about. He spoke about Noir films and how this was his favorite. Riley had to admit, that if she was going to pick a favorite noir film, this would be near the top. Truth was, she didn’t watch many noir films, but at least she’d seen this one. He mentioned The Big Sleep and Riley couldn’t comment, she hadn’t seen that one…even if it did have Bogey.
Riley offered the popcorn again and nodded her head when he turned her question back in her direction.
”I have…haven’t seen the Big Sleep though. Bogey was pretty versatile, he did all these Noir movies, but he also did the sweet ones like African Queen and Sabrina…so I’ve seen lots of his movies, just maybe not the same ones.”
She smiled in the dark. ”Have you seen either of those?” she asked, skeptically. He’d simply be too good to be true…or a big Bogart fanboy.
