The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was always nice having Gina in her room. Vanessa felt a certain degree of pride in her room and it was, in her opinion, a great place to cuddle. She had the dimmer switch and color changing lighting, the very comfy bed, and the kind of sheets you never told people how much you spent on them. Vanessa was ready to curl up close with her girlfriend and let the night progress.
However, as she kept reminding herself, she had to be good. Gina was there to study and Vanessa wanted her to know she could come over and study without major distractions. It was a long-term plan; if she trusted Vanessa’s apartment, she would come over for more study sessions, which meant more Gina time. Vanessa was at the point where any plan that could result in more time with her girlfriend was a plan she wanted to pursue.
Her efforts were rewarded with a kiss on the forehead and the warm, fuzzy feeling that followed. She was going to be a good Study Nessa. She grabbed her own e-reader so she could occupy herself while Gina begrudgingly opened her textbook. With Gina’s back against the wall, Vanessa decided the best place to relax would by laying down so her head could rest on Gina’s lap. ”Yes. Reading.”
Nessa was reading one of her trashy lesbian romance novels, which were one of her guilty pleasures for killing time away from video games. The only problem, she realized, was the subject matter was hitting home. She was in the middle of the book, when the main character couple inevitably stopped fighting the connection and the pull between them. She made it three pages before she was descending into a steamy, intense sex scene that left her face noticeably red. It did not help that she could feel the warmth of Gina’s body as she used it as a pillow beneath her. Soft, squishy thighs that…
Okay. Vanessa sat up, shaking her hair away from her face. She grabbed a fry and dipped it into the garlic aioli to distract herself, but a thought occurred to her. Gina grabbed fries, but she didn’t try Vanessa’s aioli. Clearly that had to be remedied; she remembered from their first drunken night that Gina understood garlic made everything better. With a grin, she held up the fry. ”You know, not to make a big deal of it, but you haven’t even tried my aioli yet. You’re gonna hurt a girl’s feelings, so you might wanna remedy that.”
She got to her knees and faced Gina. ”I can even help.” She held the fry carefully between her teeth with the saucy end pointing to Gina. A small little cute moment was not going to derail a study session.
The girls agreed on new terms for their drinking game just in time for the waitress to return with their large cocktails. Vanessa almost snorted her drink when Winnie abandoned all hints of subtlety. The tone and imagery of a sweet taste on her tongue caught the waitress off guard as well, who bumped into their couch on the way out. The woman was crimson, but Vanessa was sure it would not keep her from returning to serve them soon. She was willing to bet Winnie had successfully made their couch the waitress’s priority for the rest of her shift.
Winnie took her two victory sips and turned the attention to her friend. ”You’re going to make that poor thing burst into flames,” she joked, taking a sip of her own beverage, feeling the collection of flavors blend together in her mouth. The sip was followed by an, ”Ah!” of satisfaction.
Vanessa grabbed one last jalapeno popper before she returned to her controller with renewed determination. ”Okay, time for the Bookman Revenge Tour, Twenty-Seventeen!”
After at least a dozen rounds of Road Tussler V, Vanessa was feeling damn fine. She must have found her rhythm, because she was able to take a majority of the games they played. With her victories, Vanessa was starting to get a good buzz going. She thought it was weird that Winnie was not playing at her A-Game, but everyone was entitled to an off-night.
The waitress dropped off new cocktails, along with two Jolly Rancher shots at Vanessa’s request. There was noticeably more eyelash-batting and pet name use from the woman, particularly targeted at the charmingly crass Brit. As she walked away, Vanessa raised her shot for a toast. ”To a beautiful choke job on your part.”
Vanessa was pulling out a case from the shelf for the most recent entry in the Average Giuseppe Mobiles series when she felt the alcohol-tinged need to intrude on her friend’s business. ”So what do you think? Gonna slide her your number on the check? Or will you be asking when she gets off? Followed by when her shift ends.” Yep, Vanessa was definitely on her way to being comfortably drunk by the end of the night and Winnie was going to have to deal with that, for better or worse.

Booker invoked the “vegetarian-police” and Vanessa laughed loudly at the imagery. They both loved Phil Scottsman vs the World, even if Booker was always more of a comic book nerd than Vanessa. The scene with the “third evil ex” losing his powers came up often when Vanessa’s vegetarianism came up, even if she pointed out the flaw in Booker’s logic every time.
”May I remind you, those were vegan police. And as I clearly keep proving, I am not strong enough to ascend to that level of ‘better than everyone else.’ I don’t have the strength of character to be vegan.” Vanessa grabbed one of the delicious tacos, making sure to keep all the goodness contained in the flour tortilla. ”Ovo-lacto vegetarian, maybe. Or, you know, pescatarian now.” She hoped the fish would forgive her one day, but she had been doomed by a taco craving since the food trucks she came across on the Fourth of July.
Vanessa bit into the taco, savoring the complex, layered flavors as she lost her vegetarian citizenship. She enjoyed the taste and the breeze that came when one was up so high in the city. She looked back out at the city, feeling the happiness and optimism returning to the world before her once again. She told someone about her powers and, while it did not go smoothly, she did survive it. Vanessa was lucky to have a brother like Booker, and she had to make an effort to remind him of that more.
As an act of affection, Vanessa lightly elbowed Booker’s shoulder, smiling. ”Hey. Thank you.” She did not need to explain her thanks. Booker was the smart one; she was sure he knew. That did not mean she was done. ”I love you, bro.” There; the words felt more important when she was so recently worried she would never get to say them again.
”I mean, almost as much as these fish tacos, at least.”

In a small, irrational way, Vanessa worried Gina might see the invitation to her room as something forward, which it totally was not. It just seemed like a good place to get some studying done. At least, she assumed it would be; she never went to college, so her experience with ideal studying conditions was limited to time spent with girls in college. Besides, the first night they met, they spent the night together and were able to behave. Vanessa had the willpower to be good… well, at least while Gina was studying. They would have to see where things went from there—not that Vanessa had any undisclosed intentions in mind. ”Great. Follow me, babe,” she said cheerfully, taking Gina’s hand in her free hand.
Vanessa nudged the door to her room open with her shoulder and led the way inside. Her room was neater than average because she had a small window of time to prepare for Gina. The clothes that were in small piles on the carpet were in the hamper in her closet. She also removed the two plates she had lingering on the nightstand so the surface only had her e-reader and a small remote resting on top. The outside-facing wall had large windows with the blinds and curtains drawn. Two walls had large cloth tapestries hanging: one inspired by one of her favorite artists and the other by her favorite game series. Near the bed, (but just far enough to be safe,) Vanessa had her first gift from a fanmail segment mounted on the wall: a video game-inspired battle axe. She had a very unique fanbase.
Leading Gina to the bed, Vanessa carefully placed the tray of fries down on the nightstand before pulling them both onto the mattress with a bounce. She grabbed the remote and hit three buttons which turned on the overhead lights, turned them purple, and dimmed them respectively. With the lighting out of the way, she grabbed a fry, dipped it in the garlic aioli and popped it into her mouth, savoring the flavors. ”Okay! You have your study stuff. You have your study snack!” She wrapped her arms around Gina’s waist. ”You have your study Nessa. I think we’re totally ready for some studying,” she decided with a wide grin.
Vanessa worried the conversation about Booker was going to be picked at until she resigned herself to saying something. She loved Winnie, but she was very good at getting what she wanted because she rarely stopped short. Fortunately, as they started up the first round of the game, Winnie seemed willing to move on to teasing Vanessa and trash talking. It was a relief and a stab to her pride at the same time. ”Hey! There’s nothing wrong with dancing games,” she said with a pout. ”They’re fun for parties.” And with that, they jumped into the high paced action of Road Tussler Five!
…And soon enough, Vanessa emerged on the other side of round one with a loss under her belt. In typical fashion, waved her hand at the screen shouting, ”Okay, what was that bulls*** combo! The ****!” Vanessa had the same problems most button mashers had in fighting games: terrible block prediction. The game’s mechanics required well-timed counter-entries corresponding to the type of attack she was dealing with. For the life of her, it seemed like she always blocked low for high punches and guessed high for low hits. Guess wrong enough times in a row and it felt like you were trapped in a never-ending vortex of suck.
Still pouting, Vanessa reached for the poutine and grabbed a fistful of savory, melty, starchy goodness. She would wipe her hand diligently in a minute. It was more important to give herself the junk food morale boost so she did not get her ass kicked quite so badly in round two.
While they prepared the second round, Winnie proposed the intriguing notion of their night of gaming turning into a long-running, competitive drinking game. It was definitely an idea Vanessa was willing to get behind, but the terms sounded backwards. Was it not the loser who drank? Sure, they both wanted to get messy for the night, but it seemed like an odd way to subvert the trope.
”I am almost entirely up for that plan if we remove one word: sober. Two sips when you win and one sip when you lose,” she amended, hoping Winnie would gladly accept an excuse for more drinking. ”It’ll be no fun if you don’t get at least a little tipsy,” she joked. Winnie was going to have an edge in RT5, but she was not so much better than Vanessa that she could not swing a few games along the way. Once the fighting games ended, Vanessa could also propose a shooter or a party game and really take the lead.

Vanessa hoped what she said made sense, first and foremost. She was emotional and frazzled, so it would have been understandable if her logic was incomprehensible. More importantly, she hoped her words were enough for Booker to see, despite her mistakes, Vanessa did not lie because she could not trust him. She was not the most trusting person, but Booker was always an exception to the rule.
The one thing she was sure of was that she used the last of her words. If they did not work, she was at a loss for what to do next. All she could do was look out over the edge of the building alongside her brother, taking in the city that raised them.
When Booker finally spoke, Vanessa was still too cautious to face him. It was nice to know she was not dumb, but it was the way he teased her that caused her ears to perk up. Was he really making a joke?
Out of the corner of her eye, Vanessa caught the smirk on Booker’s lips. She craned her head slightly to get a better look at him, hoping he had not crossed over to the side of anger that prompted spontaneous laughter. Instead, she saw his eyes on the tray of tacos she brought up with her. He looked at her offerings and, sure enough, he made a joke.
She smiled, and she felt fresh tears streaming down her cheek. She knew she was not out of hot water yet; there were a thousand and one questions she owed answers to eventually. It was just nice to know Booker could still joke with her. She would have been miserable if she broke that part of their relationships.
”Not a lie. I mean, I brought the tacos up as a ‘sorry I’m a dumbass’ peace offering,” she admitted, placing extra emphasis on Booker’s previous correction. Of course, she could feel the plight of her stomach persisting, and fish tacos looked beautiful to a hungry mind. ”Then again… this has been one hell of a day…” She looked up and smirked. ”Do they revoke my veggie membership card over one fish taco?”
Vanessa was not an adept fighting game player, but she did not dislike the genre. She acknowledged the high skill-ceiling of the technique-heavy games and the diverse playstyles provided by a more diverse cast of playable characters. She also could not ignore that, while some characters were clearly designed to appeal to a heterosexual male demographic, the Road Tussler series had a very specific love of ripped women with thick thighs. That love fell surprisingly in line with some of Vanessa’s own tastes. She was allowed to have weaknesses, right?
Winnie claimed her own goddess of thickness and a**-kicking and they started loading up a stage for the practice match they unspokenly agreed to before any fighting game. She took the opportunity to remind Vanessa of how indisputably lucky she was to have Winnie in her life, reminding her of all the work she put in to be the best wingwoman single Vanessa could want. ”Fair. We were definitely the queens of several gay…”
A delayed thought hit Vanessa and she laughed her throaty token laugh. ”Hahaha. ‘Wingwoman.’” Winnie was unintentionally contributing to Vanessa’s cause with puns like that.
Winnie committed to Luri, but it was really an afterthought so she could continue from Vanessa’s dropped point. She knew the Bookman siblings well enough to know strife in the apartment was unusual. There was good-spirited bickering, but they rarely found themselves at odds. She chuckled at Winnie’s suggestion, but she recognized it as a way to probe for a real answer.
Vanessa opened her mouth, but changed her mind with the shake of her head. ”No, sorry. I’m not drunk enough to get into it.” If she explained the fight with Booker, it would also mean coming clean about her mutation to Winnie. She was one of the few people Vanessa considered telling about her powers, but it was a hard subject to breach. The truth almost wrecked her relationship with her brother, which was not a promising start, and Vanessa was still adjusting to the idea of telling anyone.
With sufficient time passing to cool down the fried batter, Vanessa grabbed a mushroom and popped it in her mouth before wiping off her hand to return to the controller. ”Anyway, stop stalling. It’s about time I button-mash your face in,” she joked half-heartedly, wanting to skirt around a challenging topic.

Vanessa watched the small plastic spice bottles fall after Gina’s tail flicked them off the rack, but she laughed it off. The caps stayed on, so it was not like she made a mess of Booker’s counters, (which would have been a true sin.) Gina dutifully put the spices back in their place as Vanessa worked to pick up fries with a spatula, transferring them onto a large plate. She made plenty to snack on throughout the evening, so there was more than enough to share with her girlfriend. She placed two ceramic ramekins on the plate, one filled with ketchup and the other with the garlic aioli. The fancy dipping cups would seem like an unnecessary purchase, but Vanessa had a love of dippable snacks, so they came in handy for holding condiments, cheese, salsa, and any other viscous liquid that tasted delicious on a solid.
Gina explained that she was avoiding the Honeycomb because two of the girls in her flat were fighting—surprise, surprise. It was not the first time Gina told her about the flatmate squabbles, and if she had to guess, it would not be the last. ”Oh no,” she said with all the sincerity of a cardboard cut-out, ”most unfortunate. I suppose… that means I’m filling the role of study buddy for the night?” she asked with a bright smile. There was a lot she wanted to do with her Gina time, but she also wanted to be the kind of girlfriend who could be mature and supportive.
Grabbing the plate of fries, Vanessa proposed, ”We can settle in, enjoy a nice study snack, and I can cheerlead you through whatever you have to do,” she said with determination. ”Let’s set up shop in the living room and knock this thing out so we can celebrate with serious cuddling time.”
Vanessa led her girlfriend from the kitchen to the living room, but she barely took two steps into the space before the gears in her head were turning. She could see just down the hall to the door of her room and suddenly, the determination she felt moments earlier was weakening. ”Actually, even better plan. We should host this study session in my room. You know, so we don’t get potentially distracted by the TV.” There was absolutely no reason for the two young women to get distracted in Nessa’s bedroom, after all.

Vanessa braced herself for whatever might come after she tried to clear herself of all Chris-related charges. After their most recent experiences, she would hardly blame him for doubting her honesty. She could only hope Booker would recognize the difference between lying about her knowledge of his ex-boyfriend’s infidelity and lying about who she was to the world en masse.
Booker’s voice was still tense and there were still tears in his eyes. He reminded Vanessa that he did not care about her mutation. Every time she heard him say it, she felt silly for keeping it to herself for so long. She was surprised to hear he was not upset about the lie. If that was not the problem, where was she still failing.
Her heart sank when Booker pointed out how she was putting him and their parents on the same level. When he explained it like that, she felt guilty for putting a thought like that in his head. Her immediate reaction was an impassioned, ”That’s not true!” The emotional energy drained from her and she saw things from Booker’s side. Her shoulders fell and she sighed. ”I… didn’t mean to. You were always going to be the first person I told. I just…”
Frustration mounted as Vanessa tried to summon the right words to make her point. ”It’s like… there was a locker I needed to clean out.” A locker felt like a fresh take on the “out of the closet” trope Vanessa was constantly dealing with. ”And I kept finding reasons to not do it at first. By the time I realized it was something I needed to do, I was worried to open the door because I might have waited too long. A damp bikini coated in mildew and an old sandwich developing sentient mold.” In her head, the analogy made sense.
…Maybe it was worth elaborating though. ”By the time I knew I had to come out to you, I was worried I waited too long. So I kept putting it off. And then I was even more certain I waited too long. I thought I missed the time to tell you. It wasn’t until today that I realized I just had to suck it up. There was never going to be a better time.”
Vanessa covered her eyes with her hands, propping her elbows up on her knees. ”I’m sorry, Booker. You’re not like mom and dad. You’re not like anyone. I wish I was not so dumb and scared for so long. I kept a secret from you so I could be in denial. I don’t want to do either of those two things again.” She made such a big deal about being a proud lesbian, but Vanessa hid so many parts of her from the world. She needed to start working past her hang-ups, and being honest with Booker was the first step.
Winnie had a point: Vanessa’s shot could have been better. She had a wealth of avian-related jokes to choose from, so it was inevitable not all of them were going to be gems. The key, she understood, was quantity over quality. A slew of bird jokes would annoy Winnie, especially if not all of them were good.
The waitress who came to take their order was attractive and a total sweetheart. As a frequent customer, Vanessa understood that it was best to treat any employee of The Bonus Level as “off limits” to prevent potential awkwardness. Nothing was about to keep Vanessa from coming back, after all, so glares from the wait staff would be an uncomfortable thing to adjust to. Now that she was with Gina, it was even more of a non-issue.
Of course, nothing said Winnie could not have her fun and the girl was all about fun. Vanessa just sat back, watching her best friend as she nearly charmed the pants off their waitress. The way she so smoothly made an impression was something to behold. Vanessa assumed watching Winnie flirt was like watching Picasso paint. The girl knew her medium.
Vanessa smirked as Winnie’s eyes lingered on the body of the retreating waitress. ”I bet it does,” she replied sarcastically. ”Have you ever heard of the term ‘predatory gay?’ Because you’re eying her like she’s your next meal.” She meant nothing serious; Winnie was not the woman to push someone into a situation they were not comfortable with. If Winnie was a predator, she was the kind who had an innate ability to lure her prey willingly into her trap. Poor prey.
Vanessa cycled through characters before settling on Gabriella, but Winnie was asking for a status update from her friend. ”It’s good to have a night where I can cut loose with my best friend, and despite all my best efforts, that’s still you,” she teased.
Of course, girl time was not the only reason for their night out, so Vanessa sighed and came clean as she grabbed one of the jalapeno poppers for herself. ”I mean, it’s been one of those long weeks. I needed a drink on Tuesday. Work has been going at double time and Booker and I…” Vanessa caught herself and reined things back in before continuing, ”We just had a really stressful conversation and I could use a night out. So who are you going to be?” It barely sounded like a new thought because she fit it so quickly at the end of her last statement in an effort to quickly change the subject.

Vanessa was starting to regret coming up to the roof. Sitting near Booker in silence gave her too much time to reflect on her mistake. Why had she been so scared? She knew Booker would accept her no matter what; the problem was Vanessa’s inability to accept herself. She wanted to live her life like a typical human woman, pretending her ability to read mines was as innocuous and not worth mentioning as a dander allergy.
If Vanessa wanted to deal with the crushing uncertainty of the future of her sibling relationship, she could have easily waited in the apartment. She would not have been close enough to Booker to confirm that, yes, he was electing to ignore her completely. She was keeping her eyes out at the beautiful skyline, trying to ignore the scent of the hot fish tacos between them. It had been years since her last bite of meat, but the stress and her uneasy stomach were both demanding food. The fish tacos smelled deliciously tempting, but she could not consider the thought yet. She was not going to start eating dinner while her brother contemplated her fate.
The silence was finally broken by a genuine question that came from a place of hurt. Vanessa felt for Booker immediately, but she was fortunate enough not to break his heart entirely. ”I never knew,” she assured him earnestly. ”Most of the times I saw him, he would be in your bubble. Even without that, I can only read thoughts when I’m maintaining eye contact, and at that, just the surface level thoughts,” she explained carefully.
”When he looked at me, he never thought, ‘I’m a cheating ****nugget.’ He was usually just thinking about how weird I am.” It was hard hearing people’s real thoughts, but Vanessa always assumed Chris, for the most part, was a good guy. She would have admitted to being weird if he said it out loud. It was a small detail she was not going to let ruin her image of Booker’s dream guy. Of course, he eventually tore down that image all on his own. Vanessa had to be warned multiple times what consequences assault and battery would incur, and even still, she sorely contemplated it.
Vanessa had thought about it. It was not impossible for Chris to have let the wrong thought surface in front of her. If he had, would she have said something? She believed she would have; as scared as she was to come out as a mutant, she never would have stood by and watched as a scumbag too her brother for a ride. ”I would not have sat around and let you date a guy as he lied and hurt you. I dunno, maybe I’m a hypocrite,” she mumbled, hanging her head low. She did not like the idea of being on Chris’s moral level in any capacity.

It was promising that Gina was excited for what Vanessa considered to be top-tier snack food. Sweet potato fries were a healthy craving food, but she preferred to either make them or order them from places she already trusted. Done wrong, they were too sweet and getting through a plate was a chore. She understood the need to salt and season the fries to perfection so the salt and sweetness achieved perfect balance. Sweet potato fries were an art form, at least until they were dipped in ketchup or the garlic aioli Vanessa had prepared. (Really, was there anything not improved by garlic?
Gina took their change of scenery as an opportunity to take advantage of her surroundings. She edged her way up onto the kitchen counter, helped up by Vanessa’s arms around her lower back lifting her. With the added height, she was suddenly the one looking up at her girlfriend, enjoying the way Gina’s corkscrew curls tickled her cheek as they hung loosely, framing her face.
The new height dynamic led to more kissing. Vanessa was happy to know she was not the only one missing the touches of intimacy throughout their busy weeks. The initial kisses were the cute ones: soft, gentle, and tender. Vanessa just liked the way Gina’s lips fit between hers and vice versa. It was those moments when they peppered one another with kisses that Vanessa almost did not mind taking things slow.
She just had to ignore the warm feeling growing low in her body as they continued their kissing.
In between kisses, Gina managed to ask Vanessa a question, which Vanessa promptly answered with another kiss as soon as she was done talking. Honestly, it took a moment for the question to even process in her head. ”Hm? Oh, yeah, I’ve been alright. Work ended early today and I took a little time to actually get some drawing done. Of course, my day’s significantly better now,” she admitted with a grin, returning to Gina’s lips as her hands rested on the girls hips.
The quick sweet kisses started stringing together until they slowly became one continuous kiss, gradually deepening. It was hard to realize what was even happening when her eyes were closing and she was tasting Gina and smelling the vanilla scent that was still lingering on her, even after the flight. It was hard to focus on much else but—
bzzzzzzt!
The buzzer of the oven brought Vanessa to her senses. She pulled away from the kiss slowly and begrudgingly, but she had a dreamy smile on her face. ”Right. Snacks.” If they were not careful, they would have skipped straight to dessert.
As Vanessa opened the oven and grabbed a mitt to pull out the tray of fries, she said, ”Not that I want to question a good thing, but I’m surprised you had time to come over. I thought you might be busy with homework or studying tonight?”
Vanessa knocked back the first of her shots for the night, grimacing as the Thumper hit her. There were nights for responsible drinking and there were nights when two silly, drunk women left the bar singing obnoxiously as they called for an Uber. If everything went as planned, Vanessa was hoping for the latter. Life was, in general, going really well for Vanessa, but after a week loaded with recording and editing, along with a challenging conversation with Booker, she wanted a night to let loose to an almost irresponsible level. Winnie was the perfect ride-or-die chick to have at her side.
Shaking off the bite of the drink, Vanessa tried not to cringe when Winnie suggested a fighting game for their first faceoff. She was not bad at fighters, but it was by no means her forte. That was what she got for letting Winnie make the first choice. ”The only chicken *** around here will be if you go take a crap. Load it up, punk.”
Vanessa dropped in to take her seat on the couch, sinking into the fluffy cushions. The Bonus Level understood the needs of gamers, which meant comfy furniture, high-def televisions, and greasy food. She was enough of a regular to leave the fried mushrooms alone for a few minutes; they were so freshly fried, they could scorch her fingertips and that was not a handicap she needed during her gaming deathmatch. Instead, Vanessa elected to grab three fries from the poutine, dripping with gravy and cradling some melty cheese curds. She enjoyed the savory flavors as she wiped her hands on a napkin and grabbed a controller.
As the introduction screens of the game started, a waitress in her late-twenties with brown hair with pink and white locks poking out underneath approached their couch. “Welcome back!” she greeted cheerfully, recognizing both women from past visits to the bar. “What’ll you ladies be drinking tonight?”
Vanessa mentally scanned through the menu she had memorized. ”I’d love a Rainbow Road.”
“Then that’s what you’ll get! And you, honey?” she asked, turning to Winnie with a wide smile.
When the orders were taken and the waitress returned in the direction of the bar, Vanessa returned her focus to Winnie. ”I’m glad you had the time to come out tonight. I would have thought for sure you’d be busy luring some handsome lad or lovely lady to their doom with your siren song.” Winnie was not much of a “relationship person,” preferring the low-risk world of casual flirting and fun, which was one of the main difference between her and Vanessa, the gay serial-monogamist.

Vanessa really liked Gina, but she felt some envy toward her girlfriend’s ability to fly. The notion of soaring over the city, free from traffic and crowds, feeling the wind whip through her hair sounded like a dream, but it was Gina’s everyday life. Vanessa understood that her weight would be too much of a burden for Gina to carry in the air, but that did not stop it from being a little disappointing. Still, Gina’s wings were one of the many things that made her special, and Vanessa enjoyed everything that made her Gina.
The apartment had windows open, letting a breeze in. It was that perfect time of year when everything hovered between warm and cool. The A/C was off and the heat would not be necessary for at least a month or two. It was cool, but Gina would still be able to shake off her chill. Vanessa was there to help, after all.
Gina was able to remove her sunglasses, but Vanessa noticed the wince as the light of the apartment hit her. Since they had started dating, Vanessa was more aware of light, since her girlfriend seemed to be at odds with it. She thought to address it but Gina did not give her the chance. Vanessa was suddenly wrapped in a hug “against her will,” which was worth a smirk. Even with the cold arms wrapped around her, she put forth a half-hearted wriggle in an “attempt” to free herself. ”Oh no! The body-heat police will be on the lookout for you! Quick, let’s hide you in the kitchen! There might even be sweet potato fries in there!” She wrapped her own arms around Gina’s lower back and, with fake urgency, Vanessa backpedaled, pulling Gina along.
The two women ended up in the kitchen, where the scent of sweet potato fries in the oven filling the room. ”There, I think we lost them.” Vanessa, using her height advantage, planted a soft kiss on Gina’s forehead between her horns. ”Is it too bright in here, by the way? Here, I can turn off some lights.” It was still early enough in the day that the light through the windows would be more than enough to keep the apartment lit. She kept one arm wrapped around Gina, but the other reached behind her until she felt the switch under her palm. She flicked off the lights, pleased with herself for not needing to release Gina in the process. Every second of cuddling was a valuable second!
