The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It said a lot about Celeste that she wanted to show Vanessa emotional support when she was the one whose life was falling apart around her. It was justifiably hard to see other people’s problems when one’s own struggles were so all-consuming, but Celeste was selfless. It was the only vibe Vanessa got from her, and the thoughts she had backed that vibe up. Not only was she concerned for Vanessa and Booker, but she was getting kind of emotional about it.
There was a sense of camaraderie Vanessa felt talking to someone who understood her struggle, and Celeste knew the truth and spoke it in no uncertain terms. ”You’re right. No one deserves that. Don’t ever forget that, Celeste.” The kind blonde deserved more than her bigoted parents, but if she really was like Vanessa, it was hard to remember that somedays.
The reminder that she was alone was only one part of Celeste’s pain, though; the other part was the loss and grief of losing a friend. Vanessa moved her arm from Celeste’s shoulder, wrapping it around her to pull her into a side hug. ”I can’t even imagine. At least she got to pass peacefully, and you both got to be in each other’s lives while you could. I think that’s what you have to focus on; how lucky you were to have that time.” It was hard to feel lucky after losing a friend, but if she was grieving, then she must have felt close enough that her roommate mattered.
When Celeste choked up and started crying again, Vanessa rubbed her back reassuringly. ”And this is okay, too. Let it out if you want to.” Grief came in waves, particularly when it was alternating with shock, so Vanessa just wanted her new guest to feel okay with wherever she was in the grieving process.

If she found herself in Gina’s situation, Vanessa was unsure how she would have reacted. Maybe she would be mortified if her girlfriend’s brother stumbled upon her without pants, but Gina was handling herself with poise. When she greeted Booker, it even sounded like she was able to see the humor in the situation. If that was how Gina handled awkward situations, Vanessa, who had a habit of summoning them, would want to keep her around for a long time.
To his credit, Booker acknowledged that it was time to bow out and leave the girlfriends alone. He was polite and, despite one Freudian slip, made his gentlemanly exit. Vanessa was almost thankful for her brother before he turned around to throw her under the bus. ”You could have texted, too!” she shot back, but Booker’s door was already closed.
While her brother ducked into his room, Gina was hiding in the bathroom. Vanessa followed her in, finally able to really look over her soft, tan skin. From head to toe, she looked human. Her tail was lip and Vanessa could have sworn Gina’s wings seemed shorter, but her fingers and toes were pretty much human. ”I guess it doesn’t quite come back right away, huh?” Booker was finally out of range, but Gina was not immediately changing back.
It was an unexpected change of pace, but Gina was handling the transformation in stride, admiring her own legs. ”I want to be careful with how I say this. You are unbelievably gorgeous when you’re grey. The hottest woman I know, bar none,” she clarified emphatically. ”But you wear tan damn well. In either form, you are still utterly irresistible.”
To prove her point, Vanessa sat next to Gina on the edge of the bathtub so she could lean in and kiss the girl’s neck. The sheet she was dragging was on the bathroom floor, leaving Vanessa bare once more. She tugged at the neckline of Gina’s top to expose more of her neck. Vanessa loved Gina’s grey skin, but it was deceptively durable, meaning Vanessa could not do certain things. With the lingering effects of Booker’s aura, however, Vanessa could pick a spot of sensitive skin to nibble and suck at with the intention of leaving a nice, impressive hickey. It would not be something she could do often, so she had to take advantage.
”That’s better,” she murmured, pulling away with a mischievous grin. ”You can wear that, too, for a few days…”

When Vanessa told Booker about her mutation, she knew it would not go well and she thought she knew what to expect. She had experience with telling people things they could react poorly toward. Coming out to her parents was painful because she could hear the hurtful thoughts in their heads, but nothing was surprising. By the time she chose to leave home, Vanessa knew she was ready to deal with the consequences of excommunicating her parents from her life.
All that did not prepare her for the hurt in Booker’s eyes when she told him the truth. Vanessa had grown distant from her parents over the years, but Booker was an integral part of her life. Seeing him so wounded was a reminder of why she could not keep secrets from the people who actually mattered to her.
Winnie was not Booker, and the girls had known each other for only a few years, but she still mattered. After barely scraping by with her sibling, the concern that Winnie could hate her or never forgive her was weighing heavily on Vanessa. Alcohol did not help.
Winnie started laughing into a pillow and Vanessa had never been happier to hear someone laugh. She told Vanessa to f**k off (she assumed,) but that was entirely in character for Winnie. She could feel tears forming in her eyes when Winnie signaled for her to get close. Happiness hit her so suddenly, she left herself trusting and unguarded.
Overjoyed naivety was met with a pillow to the head. It did not hurt, but Vanessa still replied with an, ”Ow!” on instinct. A second, whinier, ”Ooooow,” followed the second strike, which she received for the silliest of reasons.
Having taken her lumps, Vanessa cautiously found her place at Winnie’s side, cuddling up close. She would have to make a mental note to tell Gina about the night just in case some nosey fanboy decided to go to the internet with incriminating photos. Vanessa and Winnie were familiar with friendly, innocent cuddling, but onlookers would be less aware of the intent. It was going to be more difficult to tell Gina about the evening when she would have to dance around the topic of why things got so emotional. With her brother and her best friend now in the know, Vanessa had to consider where she was in her relationship with Gina.
Brushing away a tear on Winnie’s arm, Vanessa smiled. ”I mean, you could look at it as me letting you be the hottest mutant. And it’s still a close call. I think Gina’s still rocking the top spot, but I’m willing to agree to a tie for second.” Vanessa was not just telling her friend what she thought she wanted to hear; Winnie was, and would likely always be, one of the most gorgeous women she had ever known, mutant or not. ”And I think I know a certain waitress who would definitely cast her vote for you.”
She giggled at the idea that she was suddenly the “hottest mutant,” but when her laughter died down, she looked more sincerely toward Winnie, trying to avoid direct eye contact. ”So you’re still my bestie?”
Many people would call Vanessa a b****. Like, a lot of people. She could be brusque and some things she said came across as insensitive. Despite her first impressions, Vanessa did not consider herself to be a bad person. The last thing she wanted was to send a girl with no place to go out on the streets. Booker was also one of the occupants of the apartment, and he could invite whoever he wanted without her permission (with one notable exception.) Even if Vanessa had some reason to veto, she would not dream of it.
Knowing she had a place to rest her head while she pieced her life together, Celeste offered a soft, genuine thank you. It was enough to break Vanessa’s heart. ”Of course, you’re welcome.”
The girl seemed too sweet to deserve what the world was throwing on her shoulders, and she only had a small group of friends to rely on. Vanessa was proud of her brother for being the kind of friend who came through in the clutch, but she still knew well how it felt to have a small group of friends she really thought were close.
The style of maintaining friendships was not the only thing Vanessa and Celeste shared, as Vanessa could see in the younger woman’s eyes. Once her powers developed, Celeste lost the love and kindness from her parents. Vanessa had yet to come out to her parents as a mutant, but she still understood exactly what it was like to be ostracized from the people who were supposed to love you unconditionally, all for something outside you could not control.
Placing a hand around Celeste’s shoulder, Vanessa let out a long, heavy sigh. ”Trust me, I know all too well what it’s like to have family you can’t trust. Besides Booker, of course. It sucks, but this is when you’ll find the people who want to be there for you to make it okay. Once again, Booker,” she pointed out as an obvious instance. ”The Mansion, too. The staff there is great.” Vanessa resisted the urge to say “most of the staff,” but as bitter as she was, she knew Rebecca’s heart was in the right place as a teacher.
”Plus me,” she finally added. ”I mean, I know I’m more or less a total stranger, but sometimes it’s nice to talk things out with someone like that.” Vanessa did not want to be intrusive, but she did want Celeste to know she was not as alone as she felt.
Vanessa was in her own little world of post-coital bliss waiting for her girlfriend to return to bed. They had real time together, free from the other stresses of life, and it was everything she could have asked for. She had been long overdue for physical and emotional intimacy, and now that she got a taste, she wanted to revel in it as long as she could. Vanessa was already considering how she could convince Gina to spend the night.
Somewhere outside her glow, Vanessa was sure she heard a man’s voice shouting. One of her neighbors was a man, so she wanted to dismiss it. She had too many good things to think about to wonder what kind of argument some hot head was getting into.
The shout did dismiss some of the happy haze, so even through her door, Vanessa was able to recognize the following voice calling out. Gina was calling to her by name, followed by what? It took a moment for her next comment to process, but when it hit Vanessa, the happy clouds were gone.
Wide-eyed when she remembered that Gina decided to forgo her pants on the trip to the bathroom, Vanessa stumbled out of her bed with a thud, dragging a sheet with her to wrap around her bare body. The telepath burst through her door, with half her sheet still dragging around her feet as she witnessed what she feared had happened.
Booker had his headphones in, but the look on his face was of a man who did not expect a half-naked young woman in his bathroom. Gina was giggly, which was comforting, but it was also not the most noticeable change at a glance.
Vanessa never gave much thought to the way an adapted would affect Gina. She thought some of the non-physical aspects of her mutation would shut off and her wings and tail might become dead weight, but she underestimated the effect. Gina’s grey, dappled skin was turning to soft tones of cinnamon, spreading slowly across her body. The spreading skin tone started down her legs, reminding a stunned Vanessa why she was in the hallway in the first place.
”Oh my God, okay,” she said, figuring out where to start. ”Booker—Booker, take your headphones off!” Vanessa knew all too well how hard it could be for Booker to hear when his headphones were still on.
It was inopportune, but she realized introductions could wait no longer. ”Booker, this is Gina, my girlfriend. Gina, sweetie, this is my brother, Booker.” Her confused look faded to a more in-character annoyance as she pointedly added, ”My brother who was not supposed to be home for a while. I know because I checked.” Before things really got hot and heavy, Vanessa took a quick look at a clock so she could eyeball how much time she had before Booker returned. He could have picked a better day to finish work early, but Vanessa was starting to believe their apartment was just cursed and awkward first impressions were forever going to be the norm.

Naked girlfriend time was probably the best time for Vanessa. Obviously, everything that got them there was very satisfactory, but there was something peaceful about cuddling with Gina and feeling the softness of her body with no barriers between them. Tail flicking, butt grabbing, neck nuzzling. Being in bed with Gina was Vanessa’s new happy place and the lack of clothes helped.
Gina recognized her girlfriend’s concerns, however irrational they may be, and handled them with grace. The last thing Vanessa needed was to be told to calm down or stop freaking out over nothing. It was refreshing to have Gina point out that her concerns were valid, but she thought it was best to focus on how good things were rather than how poorly they could end. Their relationship was great and the easiest way to screw that up would be to worry about hypotheticals that were influenced by nothing related to with Gina. ”You’re right. Right now, I really like us. That’s what matters” Gina sealed the discussion with a kiss on the cheek and Vanessa replied with a content hum.
Her joy deflated when Gina had to leave her side, but Vanessa only pouted. Nature was calling, and there would be plenty of cuddling to follow Gina’s return. She resigned herself to watching Gina in all her glory as she covered up with panties and a shirt. ”Mmmm, hurry back. The bed’s not as fun without you,” she purred.
Gina walked out into the hallway and Vanessa laid out flat on her back. How often did she get perfect days? Her brain almost got in the way, but Gina had a way of bringing Vanessa back to a better place. It was a lucky day and she was the luckiest girl in New York. She doubted anything could get in her way on such an amazing day.

It was easy to see the moment of recognition in Winnie’s face when the reality of the situation hit. Vanessa did not need her powers to tell her that Winnie believed her, but she had them and as long as the two maintained eye contact, those powers would be on autopilot. Winnie realized the only way Vanessa could comment on her thoughts was if she could read them. After a bout of denial, Winnie reached the conclusion on her own, but Vanessa had to confess anyway. She needed to tell her best friend the truth.
For a few seconds, Winnie and Vanessa just sat there. The moment stood perfectly still and Vanessa did not realize she was still holding Winnie’s face until they were pulled away. Before they broke eye contact, she saw how Winnie considered how long they had been friends without knowing the truth about Vanessa.
Just like with Booker, it felt like the fate of a friendship was hanging in the balance. Unlike the first time, Vanessa was drunk, so if things went south there would be loud sobbing and begging. Vanessa could be obnoxious; she did not have enough friends like Winnie to squander one without a fight.
After a small eternity, Winnie looked back to Vanessa. She reiterated what Vanessa already admitted and then promptly pitched an absolute fit about her own powers. Vanessa had to cover her mouth with both hands because she knew she could still be in trouble, but the urge to laugh was too strong. A snort escaped before she stifled herself.
Winnie’s frustration seemed to be focused on the disparity between their powers, but it was still too early for Vanessa to assume there was none left for her. ”I’m really sorry for never saying anything. I should have. I’m working on it.” Nervous words were just spilling out of Vanessa’s mouth. ”You’re my best bestie and I promise I tried not to read your mind to much, it just kind of happens sometimes because you have pretty eyes.”
Hugging Celeste gave her the sense of relief she needed to know she was not going to be tossed out on the streets. Vanessa released her from the hug, surveying the younger blonde girl. She did not look great. Rather, she looked pretty but entirely out of sorts. Her eyes were red, (which thankfully did not affect the readability of her thoughts,) her hair was unkempt thanks to her couch nap, and she just did not seem all there.
Her apology was so sincere, in spite of everything she went through, and Celeste immediately wanted to make sure she was not going to be a burden or a leech. Leave it to Booker to bring home a stray with a heart of gold.
Since a spot on the couch was offered, Vanessa accepted and sat beside Celeste. It was nice to see the girl laugh when she read Booker’s attempted text. When everything was going wrong, you had to cling to the little things like autocorrect and corgi jokes. ”I mean, you’re pretty darn cute. But I agree, a corgi just barely edges you out there.” What person could really compete with the cuteness of a tiny ball of floof?
With both women sitting, Vanessa sighed and returned to the seriousness of Celeste’s reason for being at the apartment. ”Celeste, you’re fine. We don’t need you focusing on trying to earn your keep. You’re our guest; please focus on feeling better and figuring out your next move.”
Vanessa considered how most people might deal with the challenge of finding themselves suddenly homeless. It was a scary thought, particularly for someone so young. When Vanessa left the house after her final fight with her parents, she would have been lost if not for the friends she was able to rely on while she pieced her life together. ”I’m guessing with your accent you’re not exactly from New York, but do you maybe have friends who need another roommate? Or maybe there’s family you can talk to?” It was not the plan Vanessa would go with, but not everyone had the same parental animosity that she did.

Winnie was either stubborn or a skeptic, or maybe even a stubborn skeptic. Vanessa laid out Winnie’s thoughts step-by-step and the Brit handwaved the display by creating the false memory of a different conversation. Winnie did not tell Vanessa about the incident because she knew it was something to never speak of for both their sakes. There was no day where Winnie “told her that story,” and she knew it.
After Vanessa outed herself, Winnie’s thoughts almost stalled. She was trying to piece together the logic of something she could not explain logically. Vanessa was not used to coming out as a mutant, but she should have expected that such a big revelation would have come with denial. It was just like coming out the first time; her parents were convinced it was not true and that Vanessa was just going through a phase. Winnie was making sense of something to pretend that her life was not being changed, and her best friend being psychic was a life-changing event.
Winnie was trying to retreat into her video game, but Vanessa was having none of her attempted deflection. She used both hands to grab Winnie by the sides of her head. With her fingers firmly locked in short dirty blonde hair, Vanessa turned Winnie to face her again. ”Winnie. Dammit. Listen.” Vanessa caught Winnie’s immediate thought in her eyes and groaned. ”And no. I’m not your senpai. Don’t make this weird.” Vanessa could already feel the heat of blood flooding to her cheeks.
”You didn’t tell me that story. I just heard that story. I wish I didn’t, but I definitely did.” Vanessa sighed and kept her eyes locked on with Winnie. Even with all the alcohol in her system, she was conscious enough to keep her voice down when talking about her powers. ”I’m telethapic. Telecatic. Telepathic.” She got there eventually, though she was disappointed that her drunkenness would ruin an otherwise serious moment. ”I can read thoughts. I’m a mutant, Win.”

Vanessa did not want to rush into thinks with Gina, but it was hard to ignore the way they clicked so naturally. Conversation was easy, affection was second-nature, and sex… well, it was safe to say they were firing on all cylinders. She did not want to jump to conclusions; for a while, she thought things with Rebecca were promising. Vanessa wanted so badly to be in a relationship that just worked and Gina was starting to feel like the fit the bill, but she had to be careful. If she ended up head over heels for Gina and ended up burned again, she would find herself back on the couch, drinking along and spiraling again.
Still, she wanted to be optimistic. Such a beautiful “first time” was not the ideal moment to panic about the future. Gina gave her no reason to think she would ever hurt her like Rebecca did, so Vanessa had to work on not letting her past experiences color new ones. She might have to accept that Gina was the perfect girlfriend until proven otherwise.
The fluttering of long eyelashes on her neck left that patch of skin tingling. ”I mean, I’m pretty sure you being perfect has nothing to do with me being so awesome. They are both true, but probably unrelated,” she joked, playfully squeezing Gina’s bottom. It was almost instinctual to be touching Gina at all times when she was so close and available for touching.
Emitting a contented sigh, Vanessa closed her eyes and grew sincere. ”I’m really serious, though. This who thing… I can’t remember someone making me happy like this. I’m just scared,” she admitted. ”I know it’s still early. I just really don’t want to think about this ending one day.” Vanessa did not want to sound like a pessimist or a clingy girlfriend, but she also learned how important communication was in a relationship and she wanted to be honest with Gina. She wanted to know she was doing things right this time.
It was always jarring to walk into the apartment and see someone unexpected. Juliette was someone Vanessa was getting used to, which was good, because she spent plenty of time at the apartment. Vanessa had no right to complain; Gina was becoming a frequent visitor herself. Both Bookman siblings were in happy relationships, which normalized things around the home. The chances of coming across an unnamed man or woman in a towel were at an all-time low.
And yet, Vanessa watched as a youthful blonde stirred on her couch. Booker was many things, but Vanessa did not want to jump to the conclusion that he would be a cheater. Not with Juliette; those two were riding high on the honeymoon stage of their romance. There was another logical explanation, so Vanessa focused on the girl’s blue eyes for some answers.
The girl confirmed she was not a teenage mistress, and her thoughts backed her up, which was reassuring. She thought her brother was attractive, but did not look at him in a romantic or sexual way. That scored her points, because Vanessa was tired of catching the sexual thoughts people had about her brother.
With concerns of an affair out of the way, the real heartbreak came when the girl explained that her roommate died. Vanessa could see her; a nice old woman who passed quietly. Even with that tragedy still fresh, the girl was trying to defend herself and Booker’s honor in an awkward panic. She was frazzled and she was depressed and Vanessa put her on edge, like she did with so many people.
Vanessa sighed and took long strides toward the girl. She wrapped her arms around her and patted her on the back. ”You’re fine. You’re alright to stay here. I’m sorry for your loss.”
Releasing the girl, Vanessa pulled her phone out of her pocket and checked it again. ”I’m Vanessa. And I think Booker accidentally made it sound like we got a new puppy.” She held her screen out so Celeste could see the message. ”Gotta love autocorrect."
