The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Nate thought through his options for a Valentine's date; he was doing pretty well with birthdays and holidays so far, considering he was learning on the go. He had been worried first and foremost in getting bored without the thrill of the heist, but thus far, normalcy had been relaxing. He hoped Quin did not mind; it would be difficult to explain that his love for the simple was generated by a life-long commitment to risk and dangerous living.
What was special about this Valentine's Day was that he had something to celebrate besides a cutesy, consumerist holiday. Nate was now officially an employee of Xavier's Sister School, and he wanted to celebrate his good fortune with the woman he loved.
Man, that thought still caused goosebumps. Love. My, how time and a good woman can change a man.
For Valentine's Day, the plan was something quiet and intimate, so Nate was on his way for fondue at Quin's apartment. (For the best, surely, since Parker would have ample opportunity to intervene at Nate's place.)
Arriving at his destination with a bouquet of roses in one hand and a celebratory bottle of champagne in the other, (not that Quin knew what they were celebrating yet,) Nate found himself incapable of reaching for his copy of the key. He rapped on the door with his knuckles, hoping to get her attention. "I'm here! Hands are full; can you let me in?"

Man. Valenitne's Day. It was something that Quin had been pretty much indifferent to all of her life. Yeah, some of the movies, and the television specials, and the quirky/cute/sappy valentines were cute, but it was just not something that had ever really piqued the redhead's interest. Boyfriends gave cards, candy, she'd even gotten a cute little necklace once in high school, but the fanatic allure that some people felt towards the holiday really hadn't ever made much sense to Quincy Archer.
This year....was a little different.
Maybe the allure of Valentine's Day increased with the level of devotion in a relationship. Or maybe it was a simple case of going out of one's way making things special...but fondue in an intimate setting on a mushy-gushy holiday sure seemed appealing from where Quin was standing.
The fondue itself had been a source of mild trepidation. From everything she'd heard, it was basically liquid cheeses and sauces that one used as dipping sauces for various meats. It hadn't seemed difficult, but those were always the most dangerous recipes. Everything had worked out though, and if Quin had to say so herself...she was pleased with the presentation. There would be three courses: a bread and cheese appetizer, a meat main, and of course chocolate and fruit for dessert. Things had gone well.
A knock on the door announced that Nate was right on time, and Quin dusted the bread crumbs off her hands and headed that direction, charm bracelet jingling as she moved. The door was opened to reveal her boyfriend, in all his Valentine's day splendor, carrying roses and champagne.
"Looks like the party is here." she said, stepping to the side to grant him admittance.
It only took a few moments for the door to open, with Quin ready to greet him on the other side. "You know me; the party don't start til I walk in." New rule; think about what you say before you inadvertently use a Ke$ha lyric. Nate stretched his champagne arm around her shoulder, laying a kiss on her lips. "Happy Valentine's Day, love."
Pulling away from the hug, he held the bouquet of roses out to her until she received them. "These are for you..." Once the collection of flowers exchanged hands, he turned to find the nearest table to set the champagne down. "...and this is for us, because I've got something worth celebrating," he added a singsong tone to the end of the sentence
With his hands free and his attention unoccupied, he caught a whiff of hot, melty cheese. "Mmm, smells delicious," he noted quietly, hungry for the evening.

"Something to celebrate, huh?" Quin said, kissing Nate back and moving away to find something to put the flowers in. It was Valentine's Day though, and Quin had been prepared. The roses were pretty, and the redhead had to appreciate the traditional start to the evening.
Nate commented that everything smelled good and Quin nodded with no small amount of pride. "Fondue parties were popular when I was in college, so I know my way around the block. If you want to sit down, I'll start bringing stuff out, then you can tell me what we're celebrating. I've even got the long, skinny forks."
It only took a few moments to grab the first course and a couple of wine glasses from her kitchen, and soon enough they were both seated at the table. "I don't actually have champagne glasses..." Quin admitted sheepishly, "So this will have to do."
That said, she left the pouring of beverages to Nate and speared a piece of bread. There was just something about melted cheese that made a person not want to wait.
Nate watched in eager anticipation as Quin brought out the first course of cheeses and breads. "So that's what you were up to in college-- crazy fondue parties?" He teased, but it was easier to think of her as a party with friends girl than a wild party girl. (Though he did wonder if there were any interesting stories of that nature...)
Quin pulled out wine glasses, which a high class socialite would have scoffed at. He had met those people and he had to wine and dine those people, but he was not one of them. He took the glass gladly. "This'll work just fine. Thanks love."
He took his long fork, amused by the structure of the long, skinny handle, and quickly selected a good chunk of bread to dunk in the molten cheese. "Now for the taste verdict..." He slowly brought the dripping piece to his mouth and rested it on his tongue. "...mmm, delicious!"
Placing his fork down, he raised his glass for a toast. "To a first Valentine's Day between a cunning officer and the new teacher of the arts at Xavier's." He held the glass in the air, waiting for his point to sink in.

The champagne was poured, and Quin watched with no small amount of anticipation as Nathan took the first bite. A moment later he declared the food fit for consumption and Quin dug in. It really was pretty good, and the redhead grinned as she chewed the first bite.
"That wasn't all we did, but for a time it was very popular....before we discovered the allure of 'Edward 40-hands.' " Yeah. That had been a good year.
As far as the celebration was concerned, Quin didn't have to wait long to find out. Nate had gotten the job. At the Mutant school. As a teacher. He seemed so happy about the whole thing, that she simply couldn't naysay the whole thing. Nate was happy, he had a steady job that would keep him in New York... Yeah, there was no way she could be unhappy.
"To all of that, and many more exciting things between now and the next."
That said, and the champagne drained....all attention was returned to the bread.
It would seem Nate had underestimated his law-abiding girlfriend. He never went through college (officially,) he did spend some time in the college drinking scene. (Not his social cup of tea, but in his late teens and early twenties, they were a great place to get lost in music, games and sex.) Edward Fourty-Hands was a great way to guarantee that the night would lead to stories told by one's more sober friends. "Should have known Miss Proper Police Woman had a wild side in college," he joked. Now he would have to pry for stories at some point...
The toast went over well, and Quin was supportive and toasted to the future and whatever it might hold. He hoped his new job would not cause any tension between them since he would now be working in close proximity to the X-Men training facilities. "And meeting those exciting things head-on," he added, finishing the rest of the champagne in his glass.
Nate brought another piece of cheesy bread to his mouth. "Y'know, one nice thing about doing this? There's pretty much zero chance that a werewolf will crash through your window." He joked, but their last date had left him with a nagging curiosity about the two men they apprehended. He had heard in passing that they were just two normal humans on the street who used a drug called M, (which Nate of course researched.) Old habits died hard, and Nate still had a sympathetic spot for the down-on-your-luck lost souls. He wanted to ask what happened to them... but that would ruin the mood for sure. As it stood, talking about work probably was not what Quin wanted for Valentine's Day.

”Hopefully not.”]/color] Quin said when Nate joked about a werewolf finding its way in through her window. ”God knows I’ve had enough wildlife in here to last a lifetime…” she added with an almost subconscious glance towards the doorway.
She shrugged it off. No point in ruining Valentine’s Day over something that had happened so long ago. ”You never know though.” she commented, partially to prolong the small talk and partially to change the subject.
”All we do right now is run down idiots who think the way to solve their problems is to pop one of those stupid M pills.”
She shook her head as she ate another piece of bread. ”People don’t get that mutant powers are just all fun and games…so many people can’t control the powers they get…and so many others just abuse them. It makes no sense.”
Nate had to agree with Quin's sentiment; between jogs in the park with giant spiders and date night strolls with feral attackers, Nate's luck with the animal-life of New York had been a bit more taxing than the average person's experiences with crapping pigeons and the rare rat.
Apparently M was causing problems on the streets. Some of the perpetrators were probably just in it for kicks, but he was certain there were people like the brothers who had nothing left and nothing to lose. Somberly, eyes glazed over, he commented, "When you're left on the streets with nothing, sometimes you just take whatever you can get and deal with the consequences as they come." Like M. Or like pick-pocketing and number-running.
Nate caught himself and jerked back into reality, worried he was going to ruin the mood of their first Valentine's Day. He formed a smile. "I'm sure you don't wanna talk about work, though."
He looked down at the plate and realized they had made considerable progress through the breads, and he was ready to crave something more savory. "After all, seems like we're about ready for the main course."

Main course. Quin stood and went to the kitchen, grabbing the plate of meat and the sauces to go with them. While she did that, she thought over the things that Nate had said, by the time she returned to the table, she was ready to talk.
"I don't mind talking about work." she said as she set down the food and reclaimed her seat.
"And I get the desperation. Sort off. I haven't ever had to deal with it, but I can empathize." she said, spearing a piece of steak and dipping it into the pot.
"What I don't get, can't get is doing things that hurt people."
She was quiet for a moment while she chewed and swallowed.
Nate was excited to see chunks of delicious meat make their way into the evening's dining, but the conversation was holding the majority of his attention.
He skewered a mouthwatering piece of steak, sinking it into the bubbling yellow cheese. "Yeah, it seems horrible..." She had a point. Nate never went so far as to hurt people, because he felt it was a reprehensible thing to do if it could be avoided.
Still, desperate people did desperate things, and it was hard to understand how true that was for most folks. Quin had a better idea of it with her experiences as a cop, but there was a difference. "It's horrible, but who knows what can happen... I'm just glad I never reached a point like that..."
Nate cautiously brought the hot cheesy meet past his lips and enjoyed the savory taste on his tongue. "Delicious," he muttered, covering his mouth with his hand to avoid being rude and chewing with his mouth open.

Quin had her second piece of meat halfway to her mouth when Nate spoke. Slowly, she lowered the tiny fondue fork and tilted her head in his general direction.
”But you were close?” she said, curiosity overwhelming any other initial feelings that may have been working their way through the redhead.
The fork rested on Nate's tongue as the realization dawned on him that he just divulged more than he planned. He contemplated going back and covering up what he said, but that would go back on what he promised himself he would do for her. He could never flat out tell her what his past involved, but he had to be honest with her about what mattered most.
He placed his fork down and folded his hands, figuring out what had to be said most. "Being a nomad didn't start out as a choice for me... I..." he took a deep breath, preparing to talk about a part of his life that rarely came up in conversation, "I spent my earliest years in the orphanage, but one day, my mutant secret was discovered, and... and I ran. I ran so far.
"I ended up on the streets, and I stayed there a while. I was a homeless kid, scraping together a way to get by." He picked his fork back up, but he was not completely done. "I never hurt anyone, but I did what I have to do. It wasn't always the most legal, but I survived."
Nate finally looked up to meet Quin's eyes again. "There is barely anyone who knows that." It would be just Quin if not for Noel's memory reading, but she was the only one he "told."

Quin watched closely, wondering exactly what it was that Nate had to tell her. Whatever it was, he seemed reluctant, but Quin didn't push. From the look on her boyfriend's face, this was serious, and she didn't want to push him too hard. As it turned out, there wasn't even a need.
The story Nate told was a sad one about powers manifesting and childhoods without parents. Had they ever talked about that before? Quin was a little shocked to realize that they hadn't. With all the talking she'd done about her parents and their strange hippie ways...nothing about Nate's had ever come up in regular conversation. Suddenly she felt guilty.
He'd done what he had to do to scrape by. Sometimes it hadn't been all that legal. The facts were the cold, hard facts. Quin couldn't say she approved, but at the same time if he hadn't hurt someone, the statute of limitations on whatever crimes Nate had committed as a kid had to be up. At least that was what the red head would tell herself, and she wouldn't ask for more details. It was the least she could do in favor of his honesty.
"I'm glad you trust me enough to let me be one...." Quin said, looking steadily back across the table for a moment before dropping her eyes to her food and pushing it around the small plate a bit.
"I just feel like I should have known this. I'm sorry for never asking before...." she said eventually, eating another piece of meat after speaking to keep anymore words from working their way out.
Nate shook his head. "No... thank you for letting me get to this in my own time." He was happy she was not apparently holding what he said against him. Of course, he was confessing to the crimes of a child, and she could never even fathom the crimes of a full-grown conman. But this degree of honesty helped.
He leaned in over the pot to kiss her in thanks. Pulling away from the kiss, he started laughing. "You taste cheesy."
