The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"You did it. Tell me exactly what you were thinking when you dropped the broom."
Iris blinked, her expression suspiciously neutral now. "I was hoping to get behind you and leave a broom-shaped welt on the back of your head," she stated matter-of-factly, then added, "I don't like grapes."
The smart-alec remark actually hid a bit of disorientation on her part. Her hands were still clutched as if she were holding the broom, and she stared at them. The feeling had only lasted a brief moment, and she couldn't accurately describe it. It was just.... One minute she felt her fingers gripping the broom tightly, the next she couldn't, then the next she could, but without the broom between them.
A skipping CD. Or a jump in a recording. That was it. That was the feeling. Sort of....
She opened her fists and examined them, as if the answer lay there. Then she stared at Hunter, and the wall behind him, attempted to recreate the feeling. It wasn't working.
"Ok, so your desire to get behind me triggered it," said Hunter, contemplating what that meant, "Try to do it again, to want to get behind me." If she couldn't get it to work through will power alone he had another training game in mind.
He'd get something, preferably something Paragon valued, and hold it behind his back. Paragon would then have to try and get it. Without using the ability there was no way she could get past him. He'd let her try first before he went to grab one of her possessions.

Iris frowned at him. "I tried that. It's not working." Possibly because he had ceased his fruit barrage. She reached down to pick up the broom, eyes still glued to her hands.
Nothing.
She paused unsure of what to do next. On one hand, she didn't want him to start throwing things at her again. On the other, her obsessiveness had kicked in. She tended to become focused on a repetative task, until she accomplished whatever goal it was she was after. If nothing else, Hunter had accomplished that much, getting her focused on the latent ability.
A brief, and unkind, thought passed through her mind; if irritation and annoyance at Hunter was this ability's mental trigger, she now had plenty reasons to make life difficult for him, and he couldn't say anything about it. She could always claim she was 'practicing'.
She quickly covered an impish laugh with a cough, then went back to trying to repeat her unconscious shift.
After several minutes the frown and frustration returned, full force, and she straightened up with a growl.
Seeing as she was unable to just activate it on her own Hunter went to plan b. Leaving the kitchen briefly he soo returned with Paragon's phone in hand. "New game," he said with a smile, "You don't get your phone back until you can tak e it off me."
Holding the phone behind his back he smiled broadly at Paragon. This was going to be fun.

When Hunter walked away, Iris took the opportunity to confiscate the rest of the grapes, along with any other produce that could be used as impromptu missiles. She had a satisfied grin on her face when he returned.
"New game. You don't get your phone back until you can take it off me."
The smile degraded into a slight sulk. "I thought you said the point of this was to get me to hide. Throwing things and stealing my stuff isn't making me want to hide. If anything, it's childish."
"Childish? How interesting." From within the phone, Crystal materialized with her usual showy display of fireworks, and floated in the air, genie-style. "What's this I hear about acting childish?"
Iris held back a groan. "I didn't activate you."
"I seem to recall pointing out, numerous times actually, that you don't have to anymore." Crystal stuck her tongue out then turned to Hunter. "You two are training without me? How rude! You know she needs more motivation than simple irritation."
The hologram snickered, and Iris's frown deepened. If the pair of them planned on ganging up on her, she wasn't going to stick around for it.
"So what do you need her to do? I'll take a crack at motivating her." Crystal continued.
Before Hunter could reply to Paragon's little quip Crystal appeared. "Cystal, so glad you could join us," said Hunter with a smile, "I'm trying to get Iris to use the living shadow power. It should be listed under powers on the folder that Chris gave you."
"I managed to use it myself by focusing on hiding, but Paragon managed to use it by trying to get behind me. So I'm trying an old fashioned game of keep away." He waved the phone at Crystal with a smile. "Care to give me a hand?"

"Cystal, so glad you could join us. I'm trying to get Iris to use the living shadow power. It should be listed under powers on the folder that Chris gave you."
"Oh yeah, I think I remember reading that. It's like an moving ink blot, except a shadow."
"I managed to use it myself by focusing on hiding, but Paragon managed to use it by trying to get behind me. So I'm trying an old fashioned game of keep away."
Iris scowled. "My name is Iris," she growled.
"Care to give me a hand?"
"No way!" Iris spoke up. "I'm not going to sit around to be double-teamed on. You want the phone? Keep it. I can always get another, preferably one without a comedy corner." She glared at Crystal and began to head out of the kitchen. The hologram smiled slyly at her.
"Aww, poor Rayne," she crooned insincerely, using Iris's given name. "Everyone's always ganging up on you, aren't they? Poor thing. Maybe spending some time with Alan will make you feel better. He sent a rather lovely email, you know."
Halfway to her room, Iris froze in her tracks. Crystal shot Hunter a sideways smirk. "I get the feeling he's rather hung up on you, hon," she continued. "I don't know how he could be, considering the whole 'stab-him-with-a-barrette clip' episode in middle school."
Iris whirled, her expression half-way between panic and fury. "How did you know about that?!"
Crystal's grin widened, and took on a devilish glow. "You know, computer diary programs are amazingly easy to hack into. Ya might want to consider going back to pen and paper."
Iris's eyes widened. "Deactivate program Mpath!" Nothing happened, except Crystal's grin possibly widening even further.
There was a pause, then Iris abruptly lunged for the phone.
Hunter could not help but smile as Crystal recounted some of Paragon's past. "Now this Alan fellow sounds very interesting," Hunter said as he dodged Paragon's lunge, "Do tell me more. How did they met, and why would little Paragon stab the poor guy? I always thought of Paragon as such a gentle soul."
He gave Paragon a small smile as he dodged another lunge, holding the phone behind his back. "She clearly want's me to know, or she'd use the ability and stop this," Hunter added, his face a picture of innocence.

"Now this Alan fellow sounds very interesting. Do tell me more. How did they met, and why would little Paragon stab the poor guy? I always thought of Paragon as such a gentle soul."
"Iris! And don't you dare!" Iris tried frantically to grab the cellphone away.
Crystal floated over to the counter and sat down. Every now and then her image would flicker when either Hunter or Iris stepped in the way of the holoprojector lens in the phone. But her voice continued on without missing a beat.
"Well, I can't say I've ever met the guy, so I don't know what he's like. But from what I've read in several old emails, he has it bad for Miss Rayne. I guess he doesn't understand what no means. As for the barrette...."
"Deactivate Mpath!" Iris shouted again, and made another grab for the phone.
"..... Seems little Alan developed a crush on Rayne in sixth grade. At least, that was the explanation given by Tia Carol and Tio Max for the braid-pulling and spit-balls. Seems during class picture day he tried to hold her hand."
"Crystal!" Iris's face turned bright red.
"What? You're the one who didn't tell the teacher why you stabbed him. You wouldn't have gotten detention if you had, and maybe he wouldn't be so hung up on making it up to you." She turned back to Hunter. "You know he's done some pretty silly things trying to get her attention since then. You should hear how he asked her to Freshman Homecoming, and why she keeps her hair short."
"Oh my.... Crystal!" Iris covered her face with both hands, blushing furiously. She could have very easily deactivated the gem and gone to hide in her room. But a combination of embarrassment, frustration and obstennance kept her trying to diffuse the situation. If she could just get the battery out of the phone.....
She was too preoccupied this time to notice the feeling, but her hands again momentarily lost feeling, and turned a dark grey, then quickly changed back.
Hunter listened with interest as he dodged and weaved, keeping teh phone well away from Paragon. "You stabbed him just for holding your hand?" Hunter said in amazment, "You are a vicious one aren't you." Dodging another lunge from Paragon he then spotted Paragon's hand's become shadows again.
Making eye contact with Crystal briefly to indicate that she should keep it up he said, "Now you can't build it up like that and then not tell me. Come on, what did he do? And why does she keep her hair short?"

"You stabbed him just for holding your hand? You are a vicious one aren't you."
"He wouldn't take no for an answer!" Iris glared at the pair of them angrily.
"Now you can't build it up like that and then not tell me. Come on, what did he do? And why does she keep her hair short?"
"It's not that interesting!" She looked toward her room. Crystal caught both the brief change and the subtle hint.
"Apparently he decided to imitate cupid. Literally."
Iris's blush deepened. "Crystal, I swear I'm going to delete you the minute I get my hands on you!"
"I'm hologram. You can't get your hands on me. Besides, I have backups." Crystal chuckled. "So anyway, according to the diary, Miss Rayne started getting roses during class, one every period, but no note as to who they were from. Then, during last period, she walks out of class and-"
"Crystal!" This time Iris's voice came out more of a growl. The grey in her hands had spread to her arms. Flecks of dark grey were also beginning to appear at her neckline.
Crystal raised on eyebrow. "-and suddenly he pops out in front of her in the hall, holding a bunch of roses and only wearing a pair of costume wings and a diaper."
Hunter could not help but laugh as Crystal recounted the tale. "And you declined a guy with that much dedication? Paragon, you cold hearted person. He must have been crushed." Hunter had spotted the advancing shadow. They were getting close.
"That just leaves the matter of her hair," said Hunter with a wicked smile at Crystal, "Why do I feel that this is going to be a very good story. Come one Crystal, let's hear it. Why does Paragon keep her hair short?"

"And you declined a guy with that much dedication? Paragon, you cold hearted person. He must have been crushed."
"I wish. And its Iris. I-R-I-S!!" Deep down, Iris knew that this was just a training exercise, just a way to awaken an ability that lay dormant inside. But the ego-trip that came with the onyx was gaining control the longer it was active. She was embarrassed to no end, and it was Crystal's fault. She had to get ahold of that phone....
"Well, I'm still trying to grasp the logic behind that one," Crystal continued. "She right; seems Sir Alan just can't take no for an answer. Since Homecoming was a bust, he shot for Prom. Asked her straight up this time and, wonder of wonders, she said yes."
Iris stood stock still, glaring daggers. She took a few steps sideways, but it seemed a frontal attack for the phone wasn't working. She looked around at the counters. If she could find something to throw at Hunter on one side, he would dodge, and she could get him from the other side. Her body felt light enough to make the lunge quick enough.
Her clothing had started to turn grey, and the shadow had almost reached her ears.
"He behaved well enough, until halfway through the night, someone spiked the punch with vodka. Apparently ol' Alan couldn't hold his liquor. He got rather rowdy, along with most of the other students. Rayne decided to leave, in a huff naturally, and he followed."
Iris backed up a few inches to the sink, and grabbed the dishsoap bottle. That would work.....
".... and started yelling at him," Crystal was saying. "She can scream pretty loud, ya know? So take the high pitched screams, add the liquor overdoes, and a habit of eating anything in sight, mix 'em all together in one nervous teenage boy, and...."
Iris tossed the bottle with all of her might, then jumped the other way to intercept Hunter when he dodged, arms reaching for the phone. However, the embarrassment was sufficient enough to jump start the shadow ability. Her body turned completely grey, then black, and seemed to dissolve into a black puddle. The puddle shot across the floor, well over-shooting her target. Iris was so surprised at the suddenness of her movement, she lost control and reformed completely. Back in bodily form, she tripped and sprawled on the carpet of the living room.
Crystal continued on even as she watched the spectacle, without missing a beat. "When she turned to leave again, he hurled, all over the back of her dress and in her hair. Like I said, I'm still trying to figure out what that has to do with keeping her hair short. But I don't claim to understand how human and mutant brains work."
Hunter listened avidly as Crystal continued her recount of Paragon's childhood while still keeping an eye on Paragon herself. He saw her back over towards the sink and could guess her plan. What she was siming for would only work if she activated the power, which judging by the explanding greyness she may well do.
When Paragon hurled the bottle Hunter dodged, as Paragon expected and watched as she lunged and simultaneously activated the ability. She shot under him as a shadow before reforming in surprise. "Crystal," Hunter said, "Sometimes humans and mutants are just not logical. There is an emotial level that, while you may mimic it well, you are unlikely to ever fully understand."
Moving to Paragon he extended a hand to help her up. "Well done," he said with a smile, "Now we just need to work on you doing it without me and Crystal taunting you for ten minutes first."

"Crystal, sometimes humans and mutants are just not logical. There is an emotional level that, while you may mimic it well, you are unlikely to ever fully understand."
Crystal snerked, both at Hunter's words and the befuddled expression on Iris's face. "Emotion, huh? Whatever. I suppose it works well enough. Though I don't see why you can't find an easier way to accomplish a goal. Preferably a less painful one."
"Well done. Now we just need to work on you doing it without me and Crystal taunting you for ten minutes first."
Iris blinked up at him. She was still trying to figure out what had just happened. The feeling of.... not being all there? It was disturbing....
"Ten minutes?" Crystal repeated. "Guess I should have checked in sooner. You know, there are a lot of stories in that diary of hers. If you ever want to read mo-"
"No!!" Iris reached out, finally snatching the phone back. She had it out of the clip, the back off, and the battery out within a few seconds, effectively cutting off Crystal's power source. The hologram disappeared mid-sentance. Iris breathed a sigh of relief. All of the grey had disappeared, and her face felt very, very warm....
