The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

So as Ahorta, who hangs around New York more than anywhere else, I finid it a little overwhelming on the New York Board. Usually, if the last post made on a thread was about two days ago, it's bumped to page two. At the Mansion, there are plenty of places to post so any new threads are on one page. In the Sanctuary, this is true as well. The Kabal has as many boards to keep one from overflowing too much. Even around the world, there are many many boards for anyone to post. However, New York has four. Since New York is the neutral, non-factioned area or the area to go when crime fighting / police fighting, I would suggest a couple more boards to keep the city from overwhelming with twelve or so thread updates a day.
Just a suggestion but we could possibly have different sections of New York. Either we could add a Business Section, Visitor Area, even the Statue of Liberty, Northern and Southern regions of the City. Possibly even Brooklyn or Queens. OR we could do it in groups. Like New York Restaurants, Hotels, Bars, Police Stations instead of specific locations. I've just noticed that the New York Board is overflowing with threads and posts each day and I think it will help out instead of having to go through two pages to find the thread you just posted in two days ago.

I don't think this is a bad idea at all. I have the same problem Ahorta does with the New York board. Another suggestion would be to split it into the boroughs...though there are lots of them.
I mean, it's not like we'll all stop posting, this might just clean things up, and since I think New York is the most active area of the board...more places to post might not hurt. It'll also encourage those of us who get a little lazy with details. *shifty eyes at self* to think about where they're RP'ing in the city.

I'm going to put in my agreement for this idea as well. Somehow breaking the New York board up into three of four different boards. Even something as simple as business and residential would be an improvement.

We've been vaguely considering doing this, but haven't yet thought of a good way to do so; previously, we'd looked into the borough-based divisions, but that seemed like it would create a few desolate boards with a roaring Manhattan. Ahorta's "Like New York Restaurants, Hotels, Bars, Police Stations instead of specific locations" is an alternate division system we hadn't considered.
What do folks think?
If we go location-wise: what locations/areas of the city do your characters frequently use?
If we go with Ahorta's break down: what types of places do your characters frequently go? Restaurants, etc?
Does anyone have alternate division ideas?
Keep in mind that new boards should fit two criteria: they shouldn't be dead from lack of posts (aka, many of the Mondragon Labs Boards, the former Astral Planes, etc), but they shouldn't be re-creating the current New York thread pile up problem, either.
It can be overwhelming to miss a few days and have trouble finding a post in that area. That said im unsure what board could be added to help ease the congestion that would not end up as dead as the old astral plane.
A Police station might be interesting, but i don't know how active that might be. Maybe a Beach area? NYC does have a lot of sea side area right?
But if we go with a bar or something like that, it would be interesting if it was a character run business, like ghosts book shop. Devideing into the 5 boroughs might be an interesting idea but i can see one of them being neglected.
A residential section might not be bad, or devideing into a north and south section, Statue of liberty thread might not get used though, i think that might be to exclusive.
The residential section is what i like most of all so far though

Or perhaps it can instead be divided into descriptive-type places? Like, The Underworld, where shady and secret meetings and events take place. Or a Dock, where warehouse threads and the like are stored. I'm bascially trying to say places that are themed, much like Ahorta's idea.

I think the key in creating more boards without any of them becoming dead boards is to keep them broad. Having a statue of liberty board or a police station board I think would be too specific for the uses of most people. That's why I was thinking something more along the lines of residential, business and recreation.
Residential could cover areas like the suburbs and anywhere else that typically people live. Maybe covering smaller parks and such as well. Commercial covering business districts, malls, that sort of thing. Recreation covering restaurants, tourist attractions, clubs and bars. Maybe keeping New York city as the an option for those threads that don't really fall into any of the above or the boards we all ready have.

Ooo, I'm liking Meld's further generalizations of Ahorta's divisions: Residential, Commercial, Recreational, and Misc might just do the trick. Those sound like the four most common areas I see people threading in NYC. That's also not an insane number of new boards to add, nor does it include any I can easily foresee as becoming ghost towns. Splitting the current NYC traffic across those four might just do the trick.
I agree with the broadened areas. Residential could include anywhere that people sleep, including homes and hotels and apartments and motels, the such. Everywhere else would fall under those categories and I feel like with such a broadened area, it keeps up the creativity to make up these original areas.
I would even suggest an even more broad area, a board for just the Streets. There are plenty of dark things that happen in the streets, in dark alleys, and plenty who just want to walk around. I'm excited for this though.
Oh that is a good idea to include the streets & alleyways. Some threads just plain happen outside and on the run, though I suppose that could be filed under Misc or as part of the description of the Misc section.

Ooh, I like the ideas you have all shared so far. Thanks for bringing it up and for offering such great suggestions for fixing this problem.
I would suggest more than four boards, since that's what were at now. Perhaps these boards would work: (Expanded from Historian's original suggestion.)
NYC: Commercial The shops, malls, and businesses of the city.
NYC: Residential The apartments, homes, and card board boxes.
NYC: Recreational (formerly Times Square) The restaurants, bars, clubs, and tourist hot spots.
NYC: Green spaces (Formerly Central Park) The city's parks and beaches, including Central Park.
NYC: Educational The libraries and university campuses.
NYC: Legal Police stations, courthouses, and town hall.
NYC: Shadowy places The alleys, sewers, wharfs, warehouses, and other dark corners.
NYC: At large (formerly New York City) Hospitals, churches, streets: if it doesn't fit elsewhere in the city, it goes here.
I think all these locations would be used. We haven't had a ton of threads in the past that would have gone into the Legal section, but with the x-men training with the police now and a couple of law school / police characters, I think they'd get some use now. Plus, you need to go to city hall to renew your license tabs and vote. Likewise, Education hasn't been real big in the past, but there are several characters now going to the universities.

(Those descriptions came from the parallel Mod Board discussion, if anyone was wondering where my "original suggestion" randomly appeared from. 'Twas based on the Ahorta+Meld idea.
I'd tuck in hotels to the residential description, as Ahorta suggests; it's not immediately clear in my head whether such threads would be commercial, residential, or recreational. Or would it fit better in one of the others? Hmm. In any case, we should put it somewhere, lest we constantly see that question on the Cbox from new players.
I'd suggest combining the Legal and Educational boards to the same board (dubbed, eloquently, "Educational and Legal"); I suspect both are going to be relatively low traffic on their own, but combined they should bring in a fairly decent amount of threads. I also <3 the idea of having such boards--perhaps it will encourage more of our college students to actually RP their educational experience. *cough--guilty as charged--cough* And back when Rup was a cop, I always always always hated sticking the NYPD threads in random boards. Nice to see they'll finally have a home.
Lookin' good to me. Any last minute opinions/suggestions, from anyone? Otherwise, this is lookin' like it'll get done, post-haste.
