The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Sam’s eye closed slightly upon inspection of her well-manicured nails they weren’t burnt or blackened from smoke. It was odd, then again it seemed she was for the most part fire resistant. Kate’s hand slipped out of his slowly and he lowered his own not really paying it much thought as to why she was removing her hand while he was trying to inspect it. People did have their boundaries and he was guessing he was intruding on hers just a little bit more than what she was comfortable with.
”A nip?” Sam repeated his eyebrow raising as a trace of confusion entered his voice. It was clear that Kate had a deeper connection with the fire she had created or came in to contact with, not only did she create it but she managed to make it grow in a quick burst then waver back and forth when she was trying to snuff it out. ”Now what happens if you try to connect to it again this time with no intention of putting it out, you made it grow a second ago could you, ‘feed it’?” Sam asked his hand raised and landed on his chin as his good eye trailed from Kate to the flame that had ‘nipped’ her.
Respecting Kate’s space and not wanting to intrude anymore Sam turned and took a few steps back as the flames continued to flicker, ”Remember this is an opportunity to learn about yourself, limitations and such. The more you know what your capable of the easier it will be to control yourself right?”
In all honesty Sam was a bit egger to see her fire elemental form but he didn’t want to put her in any danger or strain her, the last thing he wanted was to make her fear using her powers. So Sam decided to continue to take things one-step at a time not only studying her abilities but her attitude to her abilities.
>>Now what happens if you try to connect to it again this time with no intention of putting it out, you made it grow a second ago could you, ‘feed it’? Remember this is an opportunity to learn about yourself, limitations and such. The more you know what your capable of the easier it will be to control yourself right?
“Well… I suppose.” Kate looked to the little flame again. All she really had to do to light it again would have been to blow on the fire and watch the heat of her breath make it grow. She had never really been sure why this worked and in all honesty when she had thought to do it the first time she hadn’t actually expected it to work. These days it was one of her favorite little things to do. She would start fires in the library or read by candle light sometimes just so she could have a reason to blow on a fire. Just like she had told Sam, fire had always been a comfort for her and keeping around was nice.
Kate walked back over to the flame and knelt next to it. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes once more, as her hand slid delicately back into the flame. She stared directly into the center of the flame and concentrated as hard as she could on her goal.
Grow…Grow…Grow…Grow, she directed every one of her thoughts into the center of the small flame and all it did was flicker and move.
Kate sighed and slumped her shoulders in defeat, trying to rack her brain for a way to make what Sam wanted work. The only thing she could think of was what she always did. Blow on it.
Kate kept her hand in the flame and turned her head to look at Sam who was standing behind her. She had figured that he hadn’t seen her blow on the fire the first time and that was why he thought that she would need to touch it to make it grow again. All she had to do was show him how she did it the first time and then he would see, if he didn’t already. She could walk to the other side of the flame and face Sam but that may have been too far away. How could she show him if she couldn’t face him with the flame
She thought on this and it acured to her that maybe she could move the small flame. When she had touched it earlier it was like it had been connected to her. It almost seemed to talk to her without any words. She could tell that it had been scared and confused. Kind of like a small child who didn’t understand what was going on. It was worried that she was going to hurt it and it acted accordingly. It was as if her touch gave it the ability to be. When she let it was just a flame quietly burning, but when she touched it once more she could feel what it ‘felt’. It was as if something deep inside of her had a primal connection to is and gave this inanimate plasma filled object life. To anyone else this would have seemed insane but Kate felt like she knew exactly where these feelings were coming from. The thing inside of her was a part of her whether she liked it or not, and it came with lots of consequences. This being one of the better ones.
Kate smiled once more having realized why she always felt such a connection and warmth from fire. It was because it could feel the same for her
She turned back to the little flame and it seemed to respond to her new found happiness. It was as if it was feeding off her emotions as it flickered and danced around her hand. If she could have this kind of effect on the little thing, maybe she could control it like she did the fire she created.
She concentrated once more and found that even though she could feel it and it could feel her, but the connections she had had with it before letting it go where no longer there. However, who was to say she couldn’t reform these connections?
Kate took a deep breath and moved so both of her hands were in the flame, palms up so she was cupping the bottom of it. She sat there like that for a while with nothing happening and her smile faded. She had to make this happen. She had to prove to herself that she could do this.
She closed her eyes, please… please come back… please come back to me, Kate had to have thought harder then she had ever thought before, staring into the black of the back of her eyelids.
It felt like an eternity of waiting but it was worth it when the warmth flooded over her and she could feel the heat in her hands once more and she knew the little flame was hers once more.
She lifted her hands and stood to face Sam, “I didn’t know I could do that until just now,” Kate moved in Sam’s direction, still cupping the flame in her small hands, “I had always thought that the fire I created was connected to me because it came from deep within me, but I was wrong. I feel at home with a fire burning because it is a part of me, even if it isn’t connected to me,” Kate stopped about a foot away from Sam and looked up into his face with a big smile across her own, “Thank you for making me find that. Do you still want me to make it bigger?” Without even a second passing the little flame grew in her hands.

Once again Sam got the feeling that Kate wasn’t very sure what was going to happen when she touched the flame. It was a learning process and one he was happy with how it was progressing. Just like all the other students in the school and that Sam helped, she had to discover her capabilities and limits. Slowly progressing to the flames she knelt next to the flame before gently placing her hand on the flame.
Taking another step forward Sam waited to see if the flame would reject her the way it did before forcing her to throw her hand back in shock. Moral support was all he was playing now seeing as she was immune to the flames. Knowing that she could make the flame bigger seeing as she had done it a few moments ago Sam waited to see if she could reabsorb the flame. If so the potential she could indeed have a very promising future with a certain team that Sam helped out with.
Smiling now Kate continued to experiment with the flame in quite as Sam waited to see what was going to happen, eventually Kate moved with the flame her hands cupped as if holding a small fuzzy critter and the flames flickering in her hands as if it was indeed a small harmless critter.
Smirking now Sam clapped his hands once when she looked to Sam and explained that she wasn’t aware she could do anything like what she was doing. ”No,” Sam said simply already having an idea of what she was capable of, ”I do have to ask though, are you comfortable with extinguishing that flame?” Sam asked curiously.
If it did indeed feel like home for her he assumed it would have been like destroying part of her home, or possibly a better scenario it would have been like ‘cleaning house’. If all she could do was create fire and control it her abilities could become problematic if she ever had too much fire to deal with. ”There is also one more thing I want to see…” Sam said looking down his hands falling to his side, ”I want to see your fire form…” when he looked up his eye fixed on her showing how determined he was to see it.
>>No, I do have to ask though, are you comfortable with extinguishing that flame?
Kate simply blew out the flame as one would blow out a birthday candle and looked back to Sam, lowering her hands to her sides, “Anything else you would like to know?”
>>There is also one more thing I want to see… I want to see your fire form…
“I was expecting this.” Kate looked down at her feet with a sigh. Her eyes fluttered closed and she focused on her breathing. In and out. In and out. She got lost in the silence of her own mind and her body relaxed. Her walls slowly started to far, her body temperature being unleashed to the full 93 degrees Celsius. Then she felt it, the darkness falling upon her as she fell into a deep sleep. She took one final breath in through her nose and her mouth opened releasing a white smoke. Her knees gave out from under her and her body went limp and fell to the ground.
The smoke formed into a being that was shaped like a girl or Kate’s size. Within seconds of forming it burst into bright white flames that swirled and moved within their female form.
Looking at the thing it was obvious that it wasn’t Kate. All the emotion and expression that Kate carried were not gone and her face stared at Sam through two pools of black emptiness.

Despite her feelings about being one with the flame she had no problem extinguishing it, which was good, it meant if she did loose control she could always attempt to correct herself if things did and would most likely catch on fire. Now it was up to him to make sure Kate, is skilled enough to keep her control so there wouldn’t be any unwanted power outburst something Sam had to control as well when he was younger.
Once again she averted her gaze from him and redirected it somewhere else, her feet seemed to be a better spot to gaze at than Sam. Keeping his eye on her he noticed that the room noticeably started to get warmer the majority of the heat if not all were coming from Kate. Taking a few steps back and focusing on his own mutation Sam’s body started to cool his own body off, as everything around him was getting hotter and hotter. Unfrotunatly it got to the point where he had to distance himself from Kate.
It was the last thing he wanted to do but seeing as the heat was becoming to the point where it was unbearable even to him he had to create some distance. Kate’s body for a moment went rigid then fell to the ground as smoke started to form. Looking up to the center of the danger room glad that everything was being recorded, Sam continued to watch amazed at what he was now looking at. A fiery being stood before him where Kate once stood and all signs of intelligent life were gone.
Blankly returning the gaze of the fire beast Sam called out, ”You still in there Kate?” Not sure what sort of response to expect.
The fire elemental and Kate where two completely different beings that inhabited the same body. Kate; full of caring and kindness. The elemental; logical and uncaring. Kate had actually taken much care to hold on to her emotions. She could always feel the cold being inside of her and never wanted to become anything like it. Now said being stood staring at Kate's new found teacher and Kate was no where to be found.
>>You still in there Kate?
The thing squinted it's eyes at his stupidity and looked over to the limp form lying just behind it and then back to him.

There was no response from Kate, at least none that he was hoping for. The flamed figure stood before him and continued to stare not moving and from the looks of it not breathing. However even though the creature wasn’t moving he was still very much alive the flames that were the elemental moved and grew and shrunk only to repeat the process again.
It was hot, too hot, and so hot if he had been using his sixth sense of thermal vision he had a feeling his brain would have shut down due to the intensity. The beast was hot and everything around him continued to heat up. ”Computer… Lower heat intensity…” the air around them became cooler if only for a second before the heat continued to rise again. ”Increase humidity 60%” the air slowly became more and more stiffening as more moisture was pumped into the danger room.
If he couldn’t level out the temperature with the help of the danger room he’d have to alter it on his own and as long as there was enough moisture in the air it wouldn’t be much of a problem, even with all the heat.
Immediately the water moisture in the air reacted to Sam’s mutation and cooled as he walked closer and closer. The walking was slow and his hands were raised, he didn’t want to startle the beast or engage in any negative conflict. It was still a part of Kate after all he just needed to learn a bit more. A bit more included what happens to Kate’s body when the elemental is around.
Walking closer and closer to the pair Sam kept his hands up in the air no threateningly and he continued the air cool around him, ”Just checking on her, no need to do anything rash…” Sam said as he moved closer and closer to her.
The elemental may have looked like it was just fire but it understood every word that came out of Sam’s mouth. It may not have fully understood why it was being said but it could understand the words.
It was only moments before it was suddenly very aware of the change in temperature and the human’s words suddenly made sense. But before it could react Sam began to slowly approach.
>>Just checking on her, no need to do anything rash…
It stood waiting to see what the man would do. Kate seemed to trust him slightly and because of that he was being given a small chance.

Cooled by his mutation and the extra humidity in the air Sam breathed calmly as he took a step closer to Kate’s limp body. The firery figure before him did not make a move for him but countinued to burn bright as the skin covering his body hissed and cracked from the flames. Moving further and further from the fire form Sam stepped closer and closer to Kate who was still limp. Ice formed on his hands briefly only to fall shortly after as Sam released the control over it. The last thing he wanted to do was harm Kate.
Cold hurt her and right now he was cold far colder than the air in the danger room thanks to the fire being currently staring him down. Releasing the cooling effect he had on his hands Sam’s skin started to heat up and he winced slightly. His body still cold he decided it would be in his best interest to keep the rest of his body cools the last thing he wanted was to get a heat stroke or burn up from the heat. Slowly his hands reached out for Kate and while they were colder than she would have probably liked they were still heating up too quickly for Sam’s liking.
Positioning him self so he could see the fire figure if he moved towards him Sam’s fingers reached out and gently brushed some hair from her face. The heat from her forehead would have made those unaware of her mutation worry but he figured it was normal enough. She was a fire elemental after all it was only natural her skin would be warm or even hot to the touch. ”Can you hear me Kate?” Sam said softly trying to coax her out of a dream. His hand traveled down to her neck where he checked her pulse and counted the beats. She was very much alive, however it seemed she wasn’t going to wake easy.
Wincing at the heat his hands were taking he reluctantly willed his hands to cool once again this time a little before he removed his fingers from her neck. He looked up to the fire beast to see if there was any reaction.
The elemental watched as the man, who was obviously colder than the room, walked toward Kate. It’s ‘eyes’ sharpened as he leaned down towards her. The thing had seen what he had done with the ice earlier through Kate’s eyes and knew the effect cold had on it and its host. Its hands twitched ready to throw flames at the man and hopefully kill him instantly for even trying to hurt her… and it.
When he touched her the ball began to form, but only a small amount before it realized that it felt no pain.
Can you hear me Kate?
Humans really were stupid weren’t they? How could he not realize that she was not home? If the elemental had any kind of emotion it may have been amused by the man’s ignorance.
It was obvious by the course of events that had caused the elemental to stand free of its host and show it’s true form that Kate and it were linked. How could he be so blind to what was right in front of him?
It looked into the man’s eyes as the fireball finished in its hands and without another thought it sent it whizzing past the man’s head.

Sam ducked backwards managing to fall onto his back before he shot his legs up into the air and pushing himself upright, ”Clearly I was talking to the wrong person, err… or thing here…” Sam took a few steps back and covered his skin in a thin layer of ice before he raised his hands up and waved them, ”How about you? Can you understand me?” Sam asked as he looked from Kate who was still down to the fire elemental.
The air was stifling between the elementals heat and the moisture that was in the air trying to quell the fiery beast from growing. If Sam wanted to it wouldn’t have taken much to put the beast down but he didn’t want it effecting Kate in anyway. If they were one in the same or both connected then if he attacked the elemental Kate would have been attacked as well and that was something Sam was not okay doing.
>>Clearly I was talking to the wrong person, err… or thing here…
The elemental watched cautiously as ice formed across Sam’s body. If he was not a threat why did he insist on acting like one?
>>How about you? Can you understand me?
The elemental nodded and contemplated what would happen if it just quickly threw a fireball at the man before it. Kate would not be harmed from the heat but if it did not kill the man he would surely hurt Kate.
Its eyes narrowed as a fireball formed and it did it’s best to indicate that the man should slowly move away from Kate

The fire being nodded and Sam smiled slightly, “Good, this should be a lot easier than anticipated,” Sam watched the being form a fire ball in it’s hand and Sam sighed, “Well, maybe not.” taking a few steps back from Kate as was directed Sam did his best to keep his ice armor up just so he didn’t suffer from third degree burns all of his body or worse.
“Just trying to figure a few things out,” Sam said his hands rose defensively, “Mainly the condition on Kate, I can tell she is still alive but I’m curious to see if she is home as the expression goes.” Sam however had his answer by now, it was clear that she wasn’t when the fire being was out to play it was clear Kate wasn’t.
>>Good, this should be a lot easier than anticipated. Well, maybe not.
Maybe he wasn’t as stupid as he seemed. The man backed away from Kate and the corners of its ‘mouth’ turned up at the correct action. It seemed that this man responded well to force. Good to know.
>>Just trying to figure a few things out.
The ‘smile’ faded and it once again raised a fiery eyebrow at the man before it. Why in the world is he raising his hands like an idiot? He really just looks silly. This action may be to make me think that he is not dangerous but I know that he can send power out of those hands with a simple thought like Kate does. How does this make me reassured?
>>Mainly the condition on Kate, I can tell she is still alive but I’m curious to see if she is home as the expression goes.
This man obviously wanted Kate back and there was nothing that warranted the elemental to stay out so it evaporated into a puff of smoke and returned to the body of its host, who continue to lay limp on the floor for some time after it had disappeared.

The fire being fizzled with a poof leaving a trail of smoke in his wake as it vanished. Sam blinked once and then looked around satisfied with the lack of the fire being Sam corrected the danger room to the correct conditions meaning the humidity dropped so Kate wouldn’t be injured or weakened when she came to.
Once the room was settled Sam dropped his ice armor and let out a sigh of relief and walked over to Kate who was still lying lifelessly on the ground. Sam blinked once with his good eye and leaned over and placed his hand on her forehead and nudged it gently. ”Wake up sleeping beauty.”
