The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"There are many out there that want nothing more than to blend in and look like everyone else. I don't see a point in doing that, it only makes the damages worse when humans find out you're not one of them," she shook her head. It seemed like humans felt betrayed when mutants acted normal around them. It was as if being a mutant but acting like nothing was amiss was like making people think you were the opposite gender. It was like a betrayal to be a mutant in disguise, but the mutants who made themselves known were prosecuted for their differences. It was a tough battle, but Ahorta chose to stand out.
"You can trust me," she confirmed her new friend's slowly growing trust. Ahorta nodded in agreement, listening to the reasons why the lady sang. Though the thought of money being thrown at her was curious. Ahorta believed money was only thrown at strippers, was it thrown at singers as well? She shook the mental image from her head to focus on the current situation. Perhaps the answers were here, in New York, it was a political location and had a lot of rich folk, maybe they had answers. "Have you done any research? Looked at newspaper articles that announced the situation in Romania to maybe find a name you could investigate further?"
Then the question came, who was Ahorta and why did she approach her. What made her want to help? It was a good question actually, what did make her want to help? All this time, she thought it was Layla, as she had just named herself, who was doing most of the leading and Ahorta was just curious, but it seemed like maybe she initiated the entire encounter. "I'm Ahorta McCoy. I was just curious, most people when they stare off like that, they are either different, like me, or had their heartbroken," she paused for a second. What was she saying? Didn't the woman seem like a threat at first? Or was it just that everything seemed like a threat? "I'm very observant of my surroundings and the way you were acting was curious. I only feel safe around other mutants," she finally said. It was Layla that needed the helping, so there was really no reason for Ahorta to appear to be unstable, even if she was.
She could feel Layla's eyes casually examining Ahorta and the hairs on the back of her head stuck up, but she did not protest. Calmly, she tried to ease herself out of feeling uncomfortable in any way, Layla seemed kind, gentle and inquisitive. If she was a spy, she was the best one they had sent yet. Ahorta found herself actually wanting to help Layla out, to really find out what had happened to her and why she knew nothing of her life before singing. It was rare, butit was nice to feel like she could be of some use.
"No, there is no point in blending in... especially those who wish to be known." Layla sighed softly and looked away, restless, as was made obvious by her erratic shifts of facial expression. She stood up and gave a swollow and another sigh, this one more audible than the last as she moved to the picture window that had the most amazing view of the NYC Skyline in the hotel. She wrapped her arms around herself and got lost in staring off, without forgetting that she had a guest.
She had figured out awhile before that the woman wasn't going to hurt her. Ahorta had a genuine interest in helping her out. Layla did trust her. She didn't know why, but having a kindred spirit around seemed to help her feel more at ease than ever. Her mouth pursed and her brow furrowed as she concentrated on the outside world, watching the lights whir by from passing cars as traffic unclogged itself temporarily. A hum formed in her throat, and the soft sound of her voice filled the room as she began to sing to herself. It was more to think than to be of amusement, and it seemed obvious that it was for that reason, because the words seemed hesitant and she was tapping her chin. And then the hum-singing stopped.
Layla pivoted on the ball of her left foot, and looked to her new friend. "I have looked at newspapers, I even hired a private investigator a few times here and there... But I have to be descreet. You see, I... I am somewhat popular among the rich folk. I mean... I could care less what they think of me, but the last thing I need is to see my face in the tabloids with rumors about my true self when I don't even know my true self." Deep breath.
"It could mean life or death for me, or it could mean the loss of my fundings. This whole life is a lie, to me. I mean, it is all I know right now, but still... I... I want to know who the hell I am." She squared her shoulders and then began to pace, pausing every now and then to gaze at the woman who was so curious about her. "And you are kind to offer your help, even though you don't know me either. I suppose it must have been an interesting scene to see me standing there, staring off like an idiot, short of drooling stupidly. I do it alot... Sometimes I feel like I am in the right place, like... Something seems familiar... The smells, the scenes.... And then I feel like a fool when I can't remember."
The frustrated singer moved back to her seat then, plopping down with a groan and palming her forehead. "And the fact that a complete stranger noticed that I stare off is kind of scary." Her eyes focused on the other woman again as she went on to say, "You, as a person, do not scare me, but the situation scares me. I know this is probably really confusing and I don't blame you one bit if you get up and walk out of this suite. This whole thing seems so... Unreal."
"Ahorta, it is lovely to make your aquaintance... I just hope I am worth any trouble you might go through on my bahalf if you really want to go through with helping me."
