Stuck in the Mansion on Christmas Blues (Princess)
Carrick smiled, ”She was,” he hesitated for a moment. ”Hard to remember we had a few more years together. Can’t really remember it though..” he said figuring it was pretty rough to make him want to forget. The shifter imagined it wasn’t easy watching his mother die. He felt some tears well up in the corner of his eyes and he set the mugs down.
Trying to distract himself again, ”Not much to understand. Holiday itself is about buying presents fer loved ones and spending time with ‘em.” he said starting the kettle. ”Mother’d kick me ass fer saying it though. Supposedly a religious holiday.” he shrugged, ”Wait till I show ya the mistletoe.” he said as he dumped some cocoa mix in the mugs managing a smirk.
Looking over his shoulder, ”Figure that be a given with ya being a Princess, and a girl.” he said shrugging trying not to watch her open the gift. ”Hope ya like it.” he said doing anything in his power to not watch her. He knew it wasn’t much but he thought their first official date and kiss was worth remembering at least for him.
It had to be hard for Carrick, remembering his mother, and also losing memories of her. It had to be hard to celebrate without her. Amethyst had not had a very close relationship with her parents, but even she would have mourned them. And Carrick's mother sounded like a very good mother. No wonder the holiday made him sad.
>>”Not much to understand. Holiday itself is about buying presents fer loved ones and spending time with ‘em. Mother’d kick me ass fer saying it though. Supposedly a religious holiday. Wait till I show ya the mistletoe.”
"Mistletoe...?" Amethyst had seen some mistletoe among the holiday decorations, but she'd assumed it was there because it was green.
She turned her attention to her gift, unwrapping the paper until it revealed a frame, and the tickets. It took her a moment to realize what it was. It wasn't the kind of expensive gift she was used to. But it was a memory. From their date, that ended somewhat badly, but... it was sweet, in a way. "That... is lovely" she smiled, looking up at him. She was not used to getting gifts this... personal. "Thank you."
The shifter heard her reaction and started to feel hot in the face a bit while his eyes studied the kettle, enough time had passed where he didn’t feel his eyes filling. He blinked to make sure then gave her an awkward thumbs up. There wasn’t a ton of water in the kettle it seemed because it already started to whistle.
”Welcome…” he said finally looking at her and seeing her smile. He started to purr while his tail propped up at the sight of her smiling, ”Wasn’t a big deal or nothin’.” he said thumbing his nose. ”Hard to figure a gift fer someone that can just buy anything they want anyways.” he said taking the kettle off and pouring the two mugs before refilling the kettle through the spout. A very Carrick way of doing things.
”Cheers.” he said walking over with the two mugs. Setting one down in front of her and then hefting his before sitting down next to her. ”and Mistletoe…” his face got a little warm again not sure if it was to him warming up or the Princess asking him about it. ”Another holiday tradition.” he said holding up nothing between his figners and holding it up over their heads. ”Basically an excuse to kiss someone.” he said smirking.
>>”Welcome… Wasn’t a big deal or nothin’. Hard to figure a gift fer someone that can just buy anything they want anyways.”
"It's not really about the price." It was, in a way. But it was also the act of gifting, which Atlanteans took very seriously. There was a lot of etiquette surrounding exactly how gifts were measured, chosen, given, and reciprocated. A lot of it was about the gesture, but value also figured into it. Obviously. In comparison, Carrick's gift was... sweet. And personal. And so was the hot chocolate.
>>”Cheers. and Mistletoe… Another holiday tradition. Basically an excuse to kiss someone.”
She glanced up at his hand, which was holding nothing, and tried to put the pieces together. He was cute when he was flustered.
”Nah, more of a” he waved his hand above them dangling something invisible, ”I have it so kiss me,” he said shrugging and dropping his hand back to his mug letting the warmth heat up his hand while his face turned red. ”Used to run around with it when I was first at the mansion.” He smirked trying to remember an easier time.
”I mean, if ya want payment fer kissing me I can get ya some mistletoe… if ya want.” he said smirking and looking down at his mug. They haven’t really talked about what happened last time they were together. At least Carrick had been pretty good at avoiding the subject, even if it was hard not to think about it.
”I know ya don’t have Christmas but ya got to have some holidays and traditions of yer own right?” Carrick asked his tail swaying between them until it landed in her lap. Wondering what kind of holidays Royalty had. ”
>>”Nah, more of a... I have it so kiss me. Used to run around with it when I was first at the mansion.”
"And how did that work out for you?" the princess smirked. She already knew Carrick was not very experienced, so she assumed that not everyone took the mistletoe custom too seriously. Otherwise, it sounded fun. If you had mistletoe, other people could be compelled to kiss you? The princess already had a bunch of ideas for having fun with that.
>>"I mean, if ya want payment fer kissing me I can get ya some mistletoe… if ya want.”
Oh, he was flustered again. The princess chuckled as he looked away, and hid a smile in her mug of hot chocolate.
>>”I know ya don’t have Christmas but ya got to have some holidays and traditions of yer own right?”
"We do" she nodded, brushing the topic aside "But the mistletoe thing, it sounds fun. We should adopt that..."
He almost forgot who he was talking to when she tossed that back at him. He choked and started to laugh before he took a sip which was good. It just meant he wasn’t going to be shooting Hot cocoa from his nose. It probably would have warmed him up faster though but the thought didn’t sound too enjoyable. ”Well enough.” he lied. ”Might have gotten a few. I wasn’t the talented musician I am now.” he said with a smirk.
>>> "We do"
They did. He already asked that question. He was looking for that sweet topic change and it seemed it failed to appear anything to distract him from thinking what he was thinking. He sipped his chocolaty drink followed by a tail flick. ”It’s uhhh... better in person.” he said with a nervous smirk.
”Think I saw some in the living room near the tree...” he looked down to his drink and then raised an eyebrow, ”.... want to go take a look?” he asked with a smirk.
>>”Well enough. Might have gotten a few. I wasn’t the talented musician I am now.”
"Maybe that was a plus?" the princess grinned. Sometimes Carrick was an easy target, especially when he was playing up the roguish musician thing. At the same time, it was amusing to imagine him going around with mistletoe, trying to get people to kiss him.
>>”Think I saw some in the living room near the tree... want to go take a look?
"Sure" the princess grinned, taking another sip of the hot chocolate before she stood up to walk over to the living room. There were bundles of mistletoe hung around the door frames. They made a lot more sense now. The princess broke off the piece and waved it in the air, smiling at Carrick.
The shifter shrugged, it could have been. He knew he’d probably be less awkward than he was now with certain things if he was as good as he was younger than he was now with music. It definitely would have gotten him the good kind attention earlier.
When she got up he followed her out his eyes following her as they walked into the living room. His gaze went over to where he was earlier when she first got his attention from the other side of the window and then he noticed she was already dangling the mistletoe over her head. ”Not bad.” he smirked.
He didn’t know if he was intimidated by her attitude or experience but he hesitated for a second when she dangled it. His eyes fixed on her and he returned the smile and then took a few steps forward. ”Form’s a little off.” he lied as he leaned in to kiss her. ”We can work on it though.”
She wondered if Carrick was going to play along. He liked her, she knew as much, but he had been a bit shy about the whole making out thing before. Amethyst wanted to see how far the flirting went, and whether he still wanted to kiss her, after the awkward memory of the other night. Even though not all of it was awkward. The kissing part had been pretty nice.
>>”Form’s a little off. We can work on it though.”
The princes chuckled, and then pulled away in the last moment before he kissed him. Her eyes went wide with a sudden idea.
When she laughed and pulled away his face started to heat up. Was he reading things wrong? Did he wait too long to kiss her since the other night? A million thoughts went through the shifters’s head except for the one thing he needed to hear, ‘chill’. Instead he got the loud, ‘Mate!’ from one of the other forms.
>>>"I know what you are getting for your birthday."
”Oh?” he asked clearing his throat and pulling away quickly drinking the hot cocoa in hopes to make his failed attempt to kiss her less awkward, it was still hot and he burned his tongue a little and stopped nervously chugging his drink.
”Well, coming from you I bet it’s gonna be pretty extravagant.” he sheepishly grinned. Maybe a new Guitar? A large Amplifier to make more noise than he was already capable of. Those sounded nice.
The thought of kissing Carrick was nice. She would definitely get arund to that later, if he was still interested. But she had been preoccupied with the whole gifting situation, trying to wrap her head around the idea of meaning over value. And she still wanted to give him something for his birthday, which was a short notice. And then, she had a good idea. At least she thought she did.
>>”Oh? Well, coming from you I bet it’s gonna be pretty extravagant.”
"Come with me" she grinned, picking her cloak up on the way. Tucking the mistletoe away for later, she walked out the door of the Mansion again, back into the snow outside. She turned, waiting for him to catch up, and smiled.
"This is a special occasion, so you better make the most of it." she stated, feeling a bit nervous for a moment. Maybe she was misreading the whole thing. "You can take me flying."
”Where we going?” he asked glad for the for the distraction again his mind only focusing on where they were now going and what she was going to give him as a gift. The shifter followed the Princess once again, sipping his hot cocoa till they got to the mansion door. She grabbed her cloak and he just followed her back outside wondering why she wanted to go back out. She was cold right?
Carrick noted the smile and got nervous.
>>>"This is a special occasion, so you better make the most of it."
Something suddenly seemed off with her.
>>> "You can take me flying."
The Irishman waited for the punch line expecting a joke or something the lines of ‘got you.’ So he stared at her not sure what to do or say just looking skeptical. Then it all clicked, it wasn’t a joke right? ”Hold up? What!?!?” he asked trying to hide his excitement. He started purring at the idea and his tail swayed excitedly behind him.
The shifter jumped and spun opening his wings kicking some snow dust up in the process then landed and tried to act nonchalant about the offer. ”I mean.... it’s a pretty good gift...” he said still purring failing at hiding his excitement.
”Promise I won’t drop ya.” he said giving her a sly grin.
Carrick's reaction was very satisfying. The princess laughed, waiting for him to get the firs excitement out of the way. The purring spoke volumes. He opened his wings, and she smiled. This gift thing was not as difficult as it seemed.
>>”I mean.... it’s a pretty good gift... Promise I won’t drop ya.”
"That is the minimum you should promise" she pointed out, wrapping herself in her cloak. "Don't even joke about it. Seriously, if you try to prank me, I'll never speak to you again." Being up in the air was not the most comforting thought. But it made Carrick happy, and she found she liked that. She looked up at him expectantly, holding out her arms. "So?"
The shifter nodded his head, ”Good motivation not to then.” he flashed his teeth in a smile. Watching her wrap herself in a cloak he suddenly wished it was warmer out. Easier to convince someone flying was great when there wasn’t snow on the ground. At least it wasn’t windy.
She held her arms open and Carrick laughed, ”Don’t make it awkward?” he asked trying not to laugh knowing full well he was usually the awkward one. Carrick approached slowly then scooped her and opened his wings with a big grin on his face. ”You’d be warmer if I shifted so yer gonna have to get close.” his face got a little red as his purring continued.
Carrick pecked her cheek with a kiss and snapped opened his wings thrilled for the opportunity. With a jump and a few flaps of his wings they were in the air. For the first time Carrick wasn’t temped to fly as fast as he could. ”Let me know if we get too high, love.” he said honestly. Not even thinking of his hand placement.
