The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Um... Mirror? There's a kid at the gates looking for you."
That in itself would not have been an unusual sentence out of the person's mouth who was on guard duty at the gates... but the moment Gawain heard it he felt like something was off. The feeling intensified a thousandfold once he got to the front door of the Mansion, and met with the kid coming up the stairs. It was not a lost teenager, or a student coming to move into the Mansion. Or even a smaller kid accompanied by parents. It was one single six-year-old boy in a girl's dress. He was small, with large dark eyes and dark hair, and there was something eerily familiar about him.
"Hello there!" Gawain smiled, crouching down to look at the kid. The dress was somewhat dirty, but the kid looked unhurt. "I'm Gawain. Who are you?"
The boy tilted his head, looking at him in a... way that was a little unnerving. Gawain glanced around; he'd gotten the call at the office, and Becca had been working there as well. Maybe the little boy in the dress wanted to talk to a girl instead of Gawain?
"Um... Becca? Can you come over here for a minute?" he called down the hallway. Hopefully her curiosity'd already brought her out from behind her desk...

Grading essays took time and focus and Becca always found it easier to get all that done in the office. Their little apartment in the Mansion contained all the things that beckoned for Becca to procrastinate. In the office, there were fewer distractions. Admittedly, being in the office with Gawain was a distraction in and of itself, but after the X-Jet incident, they had agreed to behave more in public places in the Mansion. If they were going to be role models, that meant setting an example.
Even if Gawain looked handsome as hell today.
But she was being good, and Gawain had his own things to get done. It was not surprising for a kid to ask for him; it seemed like they all looked up to Mirror in both their forms. Becca admired the way he took to the role, making himself the kind of person a student in need could trust in.
Of course, he was not the only one. From down the hall, Gawain called for her, and Becca dutifully got up from her desk and followed to find her boyfriend talking to a young child in a dress. Right, she made a mental note to not be too presumptive with pronouns here. She did note that the child was unfamiliar. Did they get a new student? "Hey there," she greeted warmly. "Welcome t' Xavier's. Are ye new here? Or maybe lookin' fer someain? Ah know Gawain an' Ah woods be happy tae help ye, if ye need any."
Mirror and the kid eyed each other warily for a long moment before Becca came to the rescue, bouncing down the hallway. She had a cheerful, friendly presence, which Mirror hoped would jolt the boy out of his hesitation. And himself out of the vague sense of déja vu.
>> "Hey there. Welcome t' Xavier's. Are ye new here? Or maybe lookin' fer someain? Ah know Gawain an' Ah woods be happy tae help ye, if ye need any."
"I am looking for a mirror." the little one perked up a little at the direct question. Words came pouring out at a slight cadence, as if he was reciting them from memory. "Hi, my name is Alex, and my moms told me that if I was ever lost or scared I should go to Xavier's Sister School for Gifted Youngsters and ask to see a mirror. I was at the park and... I got lost, and scraped me knee, and then I shifted, and I could't find my adult, so I came here. I would like to see a mirror, please." That last part was said very politely, with a little, confused glance at the mirror hanging in the foyer. The kid clearly was not sure why a mirror was so important.
But Gawain did. Or sort of did, but was currently too busy staring at the kid in a bewildered manner.

Joining into the conversation late, Becca was unsure if she was missing something. The child was looking for Gawain, correct? Maybe Gawain just needed some backup with the issue at hand. They were realizing the kids of the Mansion were easier to handle when they took care of them as a team. As with many things in life, things worked best when Becca and Mirror had one another's backs.
The child did their best to explain what brought them to the Mansion, and Becca fought the urge to smirk at the obvious misunderstanding. Whoever gave them this backup plan had it well-rehearsed. "Well, Alex, it's nice tae meet ye. Ah think ye're actually lookin' for this lad here." She placed a hand on Gawain's shoulder, clarifying, "This is Gawain, and his codename is Mirror. Ah'm guessin' yer moms were suggestin' ye find him."
Leaning into Gawain, Becca whispered, "Ah'm guessin' ye know this kid, or else this is real awkward."
Alex looked curiously at Becca; it was probably the accent, or the red hair, or just no reason in general. But at least she was here now to bridge the gap while Gawain's brain was busy catching up with HOLY HELL HOW OLD IS THIS KID?
>>"Well, Alex, it's nice tae meet ye. Ah think ye're actually lookin' for this lad here. This is Gawain, and his codename is Mirror. Ah'm guessin' yer moms were suggestin' ye find him."
That seemed to be a decent explanation, even if Alex scrunched up his nose as he followed.
>>"Ah'm guessin' ye know this kid, or else this is real awkward."
"Oh yeah. I know this kid." Gawain finally got a hold of himself, and smiled at the child. "Hi, Alex. I'm Mirror. You probably don't remember me, but I... used to babysit you when you were very little." And I thought you were mine, and your mothers almost killed me multiple times. He turned to look up at Becca "Becca, this is Alex. You probably knew them as Baby X."

Gawain was clearly off-balance, and Becca was missing whatever piece had him so perplexed. The kid clearly came to the Mansion with a purpose, and you did not tell your kids to seek out strangers in a time of need.
According to Gawain, he babysat the kid at one point, but the picture became clearer when Mirror explained that the child was actually the fabled Baby X. "Oooooh that Alex!" Becca was not around for that whole fiasco, but she did hear about it later. She was glad she did, because who would not want to know about the time their now-significant other thought he had found the mystery love child from their first fling? Honestly, Rebecca was howling at the thought, because she was at least secure in the knowledge that she had not accidentally given birth to a gender-shifter and then kept it from Mirror.
Becca crouched to get closer to eye-level with the child. "Mah word, ye've gotten sae big, Alex! We'll let ye stay here and Mirror will call yer moms tae let them know where ye went. Hoo daes that soond?"
Realization dawned on Becca's face, mixed with a hint of amusement. The story of Baby X was part of Mansion folklore (Allison had made a pretty big scene when she came to claim them back), and sometimes Gawain thought he'd never ever live it down. As he introduced himself, Alex's face lit up too. The kid felt suddenly a lot more comfortable.

"That sounds good!" Alex nodded "I know their number! They made me learn it."
"You are a smart kid, aren't you" Gawain grinned, standing up, and nodding towards the kitchen "Are you hungry? I'm sure we can rustle up some food... Did you say you shifted recently? That's how you heal, right?"
Alex nodded, walking along at the promise of food. "I scraped my knee and I shifted. It happens a lot."

It was interesting interacting with a child that Gawain thought, for however long, might have been their secret love-child. Alex seemed to be polite and friendly, engaging with the two adults they were entrusting themself into the care of. She did think that Alex's mothers could have done a better job of warning Gawain of his status as an emergency point of contact. If Alex was Rebecca's kid, you'd best believe every emergency contact she had would have a list of steps to take if they showed up at their doorstep.
"Ye shift every time yer hurt?" A scraped knee was not much of an injury; she quietly wondered what the threshold there was. If Alex stubbed their toe, would they shift? It was an interesting thought. She could not imagine Mirror shifting at random, but she had also gotten used to Mirror's consistent schedule, taking turns being Becca's boyfriend and girlfriend all in one. Truly, she was a blessed bisexual.
Well, daydreaming aside, they had a child to tend to, and they were getting very good at that in recent memory. "While yer here wi' us, ur ye hungry? The Mansion has a big kitchen wi' plenty ay tasty treats if yoo'd loch? There might e'en be mair kids yer age aroond fer ye tae meet!" The kids were done with class by now, so they had free reign of the Mansion, and there was never not a time with a hungry young mutant raiding the fridge.
"Yes!" Alex nodded. It was probably not the first, or the hundredth time that someone had questions about the shifting. "I am all okay now."
>>"While yer here wi' us, ur ye hungry? The Mansion has a big kitchen wi' plenty ay tasty treats if yoo'd loch? There might e'en be mair kids yer age aroond fer ye tae meet!"
"Do you have ice cream?" Alex's eyes lit up, and he walked confidently in the direction of the kitchen along with Becca and Mirror. Gawain chuckled, trying to think whether they had restocked the freezer yet. The kitchen was devoid of other kids, but not devoid of food.
"Would you like a change of clothes?" Gawain ventured as Alex poked his head in the fridge.
"No, why?" came the somewhat echoing answer. Gawain blinked, and glanced over at Becca. Lord, I'm a bad gender-shifter...

Working and now living at the Mansion, Becca was accustomed to a wide array of mutations. Mutations that caused healing or regeneration were common, but not all were created equally. It made sense for evolution to give a body the ability to deal with injuries and wounds, whether it meant regrowing flesh or converting food into materials. Converting into a new sex and patching up wounds along the way was a unique one, even among the self-healer crowd.
And all that in a young child who thought nothing of the societal implications of that kind of power, focusing on more important things. ”Absolutely. Ice cream is mah favorite, sae Ah know we hae some hidden awa.” Becca did have a weakness for frozen treats, even as the weather grew cold.
It was interesting watching the two gender-shifters interact. (Though with hindsight, maybe it was more appropriate to call them sex-shifters? Then again, that just sounded… less than appropriate. She would settle for the current convenient nomenclature! Mutations sort of threw a wrench in gender politics.) Gawain was so used to being one gender in one body and the other gender after a swap, it clearly never occurred to him that Alex might be comfortable as any gender in any body.
Digging through the freezer, Becca offered a supportive smile to Gawain, who was trying his best. ”When Mirror is in thes body, he is a boy, but in th' other body, she's a lass, sae he'd want a change ay clothes in yer situation, but if that's nae hoo ye feel, that's absolutely fine, hun.”
Grabbing three cartons and carefully balancing them on the way to a counter, Becca looked over her shoulder at the child. ”Th’ mair important question: chocolate, strawberry, ur cookie doogh? We’ve got options fer ye today, Alex!”
>>”Absolutely. Ice cream is mah favorite, sae Ah know we hae some hidden awa.”
"You do?" Gawain arched an eyebrow. Leave it to Becca to manage to hide ice cream from a horde of hungry kids. That had to be a secondary mutant power or something. He was not going to argue; worst thing could have happened than Alison getting her child back on a sugar high.
Becca also came to the rescue with the gender-shifting question, which was good, because Mirror's brain kinda froze up on that one.
>>”When Mirror is in thes body, he is a boy, but in th' other body, she's a lass, sae he'd want a change ay clothes in yer situation, but if that's nae hoo ye feel, that's absolutely fine, hun.”
"What's a lass?"
Gawain chuckled.
"A girl. Sometimes I'm a girl."
Alex backed out of the fridge to allow Becca space, and looked at Gawain curiously.
"Sometimes I'm a girl too. But you don't need to change your clothes for that. Mom says clothes don't make you who you are."
"Well... your mom is very smart."
Why did Alex make Mirror question his entire world view every time they showed up at the Mansion? Was that a secondary mutation?
>>”Th’ mair important question: chocolate, strawberry, ur cookie doogh? We’ve got options fer ye today, Alex!”
"Cookie dough!" Alex squealed, and hopped onto a chair at the table, ready to dig in.

It was not easy hiding ice cream from a Mansion full of kids, and it was not foolproof, but the large freezer held meats and other bulk items they stocked up on to make dinners. It required some effort to even move past the stacks of meat. Well, unless you kept a small metal disk under them. They were there for Becca to easily get the food out of the freezer when she needed to cook a large meal, but it also helped her move things away, revealing her stashed desserts. Eschewing an explanation, she just gave Gawain a cheeky wink.
While Becca did not know Allison personally, she had to give the woman credit; her parenting was modern and open-minded. Not all kids were so lucky with their parentage. Becca wanted to be a parent like that in the near future.
Near? How near? Well, that was an interesting way for that thought to end up worded in her head. Best to focus on ice cream for now! ”Cookie dough is definitely a favorite aroond here. We e’en hae chocolate and caramel sauce if ye loch.” So maybe Rebecca was the type to readily spoil a kid. She made sure the Mansion kids ate their healthy foods! But Alex was lost and, despite handling it very well, why not make the experience better?
Letting Alex enjoy their ice cream gave some time for Gawain to place a call to their mothers. Rebecca took the chance to chat with the child, who was content to stuff ice cream in their face. Of course, with ice cream out, it was inevitable that other kids around Alex’s age appeared to claim bowls.
By the time Gawain returned, Rebecca was leaning against a wall in the den, watching carefully as Alex animatedly conversed with three other kids all sitting in a circle with their ice cream. She had only just met Alex, but she felt a small beat of pride watching how quickly they fit into a social situation with other kids. She was keeping an ear out for any trouble or teasing, but otherwise she was just appreciating this moment. Allison was lucky; Alex was a great kid. Becca hoped she could do as good a job when it was her turn.
Gawain made the phone call to Allison, who at first gave him an earful about the kid ending up in his care somehow, and then admitted that it had been she who gave Alex the address in the first place. At least she didn't threaten to murder Mirror when she came to pick the kid up. Baby steps.
By the time Gawain returned to the living room, Alex was already playing with some other Mansion kids close to their age, with Becca looking on (and working on the last remains of the ice cream). Gawain smirked as he stopped in the doorway next to his girlfriend, watching Alex make some new friends.
"How do random kids keep showing up in my life?" he wondered aloud, making a move for a scoop of ice cream "Like, who decided I was parent material? The Murder Moms are obviously doing a better job than I would..."

Becca's grin broadened to a full-on smile as her boyfriend thought aloud, letting her know he was back. Just that feeling was enough to brighten her mood these days, and she was already enjoying this day plenty.
Folding her arms, she strolled back into the kitchen. She would keep an ear attentive for any screaming or arguing; she was getting good at picking that out from at least two rooms over these days. "Oh, hush," she scolded in a playful tone. "They find ye coz yer great wi' kids. Aw th' students admair ye."
Slipping her arms around Gawain's waist while he scooped his ice cream, Becca dipped a pinky into his bowl and raised the ice cream-coated digit to touch his nose. "When we hae uir own, uir child cooldnae ask fur a better dad-- ur mom-- than ye. Ye'll loove an' protect them, an' Ah cannae wait tae see it."
