The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Nate was on a clock, but there were things he needed to do before his time came. When he arrived in New York, the last thing Stephen Graves expected was to develop long-lasting connections. Now that he was a new person with people he cared about, he was determined not to skip town without a word. He already spoke with Noel and asked her to do her best not to lose too many memories of him, and he spoke with Devon about his plans and apologized for stepping down from the young mutant’s cause to pursue the simple life.
Now, Nate walked through Haven’s halls on his way to a good friend’s apartment. Nate did feel an attachment to Sveta. She was one of the first people he met in New York, and they had actually connected when she came into Haven. He was adamantly in favor of encouraging her to find a place in the Inner Echelon. Of the people he interacted with daily, she was one he always valued seeing. He would miss that.
Nate knocked on the door of the apartment. In his other hand, he had a bottle of wine from his checkered past. He swiped it from the wine cellar of a very rich party he had talked his way into, and it was easily the most expensive bottle he owned. Currently, it was about half-full and carefully sealed.
He waited for Sveta to open the door and was quick to greet her with an easy smile, holding up the bottle. ”Hope I’m not intruding. Got a minute, Sveta?”
Nate was one of the few people Sveta considered her actual friends. A best friend, even. They visited each other's apartments quite often to talk about important things, or nothing at all. They only made out once, which was a win in Sveta's book, especially since no one died. But they were definitely better as friends.
She answered the knock already in her pajamas (one could not look the part of the Inner Echelon all the time). She smiled as Nate appeared with a bottle. It was always a welcome sight.
>>”Hope I’m not intruding. Got a minute, Sveta?”
"Got a whole evening" Sveta nodded, letting him in "Are we celebrating or forgetting?"

Nate's hours lately with Haven had become less traditional, so he occasionally forgot what kind of hours others kept. Sveta answered the door in her pajamas, which was a good reminder that he was indeed taking his goodbye tour at a later hour. It was fine; things were comfortable between the pair of friends. Sveta was someone Nate could be less professional around, so spending time with her was great for his mental health.
Entering the apartment, Nate shrugged his shoulders. "Not forgetting. And I'm not sure if it's celebrating." After another thought, he shook his head. "Actually, yeah. Come to think of it, we are celebrating."
Looking for glasses in Sveta's kitchen, Nate tentatively proceeded. "Norah's doing well back in Chicago. I think she did miss her home city, as much as she liked New York. I think... Nat and I have decided that it might be best for her if she stays there, so she can grow up going to one school and not having to make new friends or leave them every few months."
Nate felt right at home in her apartment. They'd drunk together enough for him to know where the glasses were. Sveta followed him into the kitchen curious about why he broke out the good booze.
>>"Not forgetting. And I'm not sure if it's celebrating... Actually, yeah. Come to think of it, we are celebrating."
"Oh?" Sveta arched an eyebrow "Do elaborate."
>>"Norah's doing well back in Chicago. I think she did miss her home city, as much as she liked New York. I think... Nat and I have decided that it might be best for her if she stays there, so she can grow up going to one school and not having to make new friends or leave them every few months."
Sveta blinked. Glasses were filled, but she was not sure what the hell she was supposed to be toasting for. Maybe Nate was being sarcastic? The kid could not be that much of a brat.
"Um... so, we are celebrating your daughter staying in Chicago?... Did I miss something?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Nate was not making things clear for Sveta, but that was because he was unsure of how to proceed here. How did he break this kind of news to a woman who he was genuinely seeing as a best friend? Even now, she was clearly concerned and confused about why Nate would be celebrating his daughter staying in Chicago.
"That little girl has become so important to me. I always had a hard time picturing myself as a father, even when things with Quin were at their best," he admitted, remembering that younger version of him. He was so concerned with his new, tidy life falling apart, he could never spare time for the kind of man he would be as a father. He was barely off his old ways as a criminal? Why would he think about raising a kid?
Except the responsibility of fatherhood changed Nate. "I would do anything for that little girl. I want the best possible life for her. That's why... I'm going to be moving out to Chicago. Stepping down from Haven, picking up my life, and hopping on a plane this weekend."
Nate's sudden visit and his offering of alcohol meant something extraordinary happened, or was about to happen. Sveta held off on her reactions until she knew which one would be the appropriate choice. It had something to do with his kid; she liked the girl alright, and Nate was a good father, even if he rarely believed that himself.
>>"That little girl has become so important to me. I always had a hard time picturing myself as a father, even when things with Quin were at their best,"
Sveta rolled her eyes and took one of the glasses. She'd told Nate before that he was a good dad. Hopefully, one day he'd hear it. She just hoped his daughter was not being taken away from him.
>>"I would do anything for that little girl. I want the best possible life for her. That's why... I'm going to be moving out to Chicago. Stepping down from Haven, picking up my life, and hopping on a plane this weekend."
Sveta's jaw fell. It took a moment for the news to sink it.
"What?!... You're moving to freaking Chicago?! Just like that?... Does Devon know about this?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Sveta was taking the news… well, about as well as he expected she might. Nate was fully aware he was dropping a bomb, and he had to be ready for the fallout. ”Devon does know. I talked with him at length about my decision. This bottle was full at the start of the day.” He had four difficult conversations to get through, and four friendships to celebrate.
It was hard to explain his choices, but he hoped she could understand. ”I want to give Norah a chance to grow up with two parents who love her. I want to see if Nat and I really have a chance of making things work. And the only place I can do that… is freaking Chicago.”
Nate looked down at his glass. ”This isn’t an easy choice, Sveta. I love New York. I wouldn’t leave my friends—my best friends lightly. I hope you know that.”
>> ”Devon does know. I talked with him at length about my decision. This bottle was full at the start of the day.”
"Oh." Devon needed someone to yell at him, at least a little bit. For letting Nate go that easy. He should have at least held out for half the bottle. Or three quarters. Wuss.
>>”I want to give Norah a chance to grow up with two parents who love her. I want to see if Nat and I really have a chance of making things work. And the only place I can do that… is freaking Chicago.”
"Well... we all have our crosses to bear" Sveta smirked, moving to take a seat on the couch, and nodding to Nate, inviting him to do the same. She as going to claim her share of the talk, and probably the rest of the bottle. He owed her at least that, for having arguments that were all logical and sh*t.
>>”This isn’t an easy choice, Sveta. I love New York. I wouldn’t leave my friends—my best friends lightly. I hope you know that.”
Best friends. Bless him.
"Nah. I'm pretty sure you were just sick of the drama. You don't need to use being an excellent father as an excuse. Showoff."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
It was clear Sveta was disappointed, and Nate expected that going into their conversation. If the roles were reversed, it would hurt Nate to see his best friend leave New York. Still, if it was to be with family, he would have supported her. He knew she would do the same, even if it was through gritted teeth.
And she did. Nate could see his reasoning sinking in as Sveta herself sank into the cushions of the couch. Smiling, Nate joined her, relaxing when he realized she would not be fighting him on his decision.
"Please, I thrive on the drama. Really, this is a sacrifice; how bored will I be in Chicago?" He sipped his wine, chuckling to himself at the thought of his relocation. "I won't even have crime to fall back on like last time. No giant mutant turkeys? No mutant love triangles? No tipsy makeouts in dark rooms to prevent shadow monsters?" he added with a more mischievous grin.
It had been a stroke of creative genius when they realized they could do that without Sveta hyperboosting Nate's powers. They were definitely just friends, but it was a harmless good night, and she had a hard enough time finding people she could safely share things like that with. "Though I'm sure you'll make due and find yourself a nice human or something, meanwhile I'll be living the domestic life. Who'd have thunk it?"
Sveta could understand Nate's reasoning. She couldn't relate to it, not being a parent (or even in a stable relationship) herself, but she definitely admired his very adult decision to do what was best for his child. The rest was just teasing, really. If this was going to be the last time for a long time they had drinks together, she was going to make the most of it.
>>"Please, I thrive on the drama. Really, this is a sacrifice; how bored will I be in Chicago? I won't even have crime to fall back on like last time. No giant mutant turkeys? No mutant love triangles? No tipsy makeouts in dark rooms to prevent shadow monsters?"
Sveta arched an eyebrow. Yeah, the shadow thing had been a stroke of genius, even if it was just between friends with minor benefits. Chicago being boring... she couldn't argue with that.
>>"Though I'm sure you'll make due and find yourself a nice human or something, meanwhile I'll be living the domestic life. Who'd have thunk it?"
"Oh, I'll do better than a nice human" Sveta grinned, sipping some wine. It was her turn to share some news. "Guess who showed back up in the middle of a grocery store robbery..."

With the weighty conversation out of the way for the moment, it really did feel like any other day of relaxing with his friend, drinking, and catching up. Nate liked that; how relaxed he could be here. Sveta deserved so much more than the world gave her. If it got out of line and mistreated her again, he'd be on the first flight from Chicago to pick a fight with all of New York.
Thankfully, not everything was gloom and doom and bad news. Evidently, someone from Sveta's past had made a surprise reappearance. Nate thought through the options in his head. Clearly happy news, clearly romantically relevant, and clearly "better than a mutant."
It clicked and Nate grinned. "The adapted. Matt?" It was fortunate that his life experiences made him good with names. "How did that go? Awkward or... better than awkward?" He remembered meeting Nat again was more than awkward, but something gave Nate the feeling Sveta would not be grinning if things went that poorly.
It was the sign of a good friend that Nate remembered that whole thing from a year before. He'd not just been a shoulder to cry on (or rather, get drunk with), but actually paid attention. Sveta knew she was going to miss him.
"Yup" she nodded with a chuckle. Matt, indeed.
>>"How did that go? Awkward or... better than awkward?"
"Oh, much better." definitely better "Well... it was awkward at first, mostly because I was beating up petty thugs at the time. Plus I didn't know he was even in the city. But then... well. It turns out he didn't ghost me. He was in prison. So, we had a lot to talk about... and things, um... developed from there."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Nate remembered when Matt came into Sveta’s life. It brought a breath of fresh air to a woman who deserved something good. Matt sounded like someone good, but then he vanished. Nate was there to help Sveta deal with that.
When Matt vanished, Nate had some unkind thoughts toward the Adapted. Nothing against him as a person, but no guy was going to be happy with the person who ghosted his best friend. It was comforting, then, to find out he was not actually doing that.
Instead, his reason was something Nate genuinely couldn’t fault him for. ”That old story, eh? Yeah, that explanation was tough to explain to Sarah and Quin,” he admitted, remembering his return to the world. ”Though based on things… developing, I say you handled the situation just fine. See, you don’t even need me around for advice. You’ve got this.”
Nate looked at his wine glass before holding it up toward Sveta as a toast. ”To second chances we both deserve.”
>>"That old story, eh? Yeah, that explanation was tough to explain to Sarah and Quin,”
Nate was a good person to talk to about these things. He was not going to judge Matt right off the bat just because he had been arrested. Most people at Haven had done much worse than a DUI. And Nate was fine, finding his way back to family bliss.
>>”Though based on things… developing, I say you handled the situation just fine. See, you don’t even need me around for advice. You’ve got this.”
"Well yeah, but I need you around to make snarky comments about it" Sveta grinned. Sure, things with Matt had been going okay so far. She knew better than to trust they will be permanent, but she was cautiously optimistic.
>>”To second chances we both deserve.”
"Cheers." Sveta clinked her glass to his. If he really thought they deserved this, maybe she could believe it too. "You have always been the optimist..."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Nate was good for a snarky comment, but with Sveta, it was all in good fun. She could deal with his teasing, and he knew when she might need some levity to help with the things weighing on her mind. She was a skeptic and had reason to be. Nate was a realist who wanted to be an optimist when it came to the people who mattered.
”Hey, things have been turning up gold for us lately. Why not be a little hopeful?” He sipped his wine, and with a smirk added, ”And if he ghosts you again? I have no qualms hunting a guy down.” That was mostly a joke.
Really, he understood her apprehension. As much as he carried himself with that easy assuredness, he had his own concerns. What if he ended up failing as a father? What if he and Nat grew to hate each other? What if he could not find his own success in Chicago?
That was why he chose to be optimistic; because it would be too easy to get lost in the doubt otherwise. ”Really though… we’re gonna be good, right? We’ve survived a hell of a lot. I think we’ve got this, yeah?” There was a hint of vulnerability in that reaffirming, because he wanted more than anything to be right.
