The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Sveta sighed in defeat, placing some food items on her tray before she followed Akshay to find a table. The fight had gone out of her for now, and she was a little less spiteful now that he admitted he thought this whole place was messed up too.
"Good. I didn't wanna end up thinking I'm crazy or anything." she muttered. The food did not look terrible, and having it outside her cell was a welcome change from the past weeks. Sveta poked at it with a fork, trying to wrap her head around the idea that she might actually have to play along if she ever wanted to get out of here. She still did not fully trust Akshay; but if he was trying to befriend her as a tactic to get her cooperate, he was not exactly good at it so far. Or maybe too good.
"Do agents have communication privileges?" she ventured after a while "Because honestly, I'm probably a missing persons case already..."

>> "Good. I didn't wanna end up thinking I'm crazy or anything."
He didn’t say anything. Truth be told that that could be a very real possibility. Akshay didn’t know everyone who worked here but he knew that the company recruited psychics whenever they could. Like adapteds, they were prized above all because of the sheer amount of power and potential that they possessed. That put them high up on the prize wheel. And those that were indoctrinated, well, if their power was strong enough, useful enough, then they were used up rather quickly doing god knows what to people.
He had seen it before. Those people who fought so hard at the beginning of their capture and within a week (if they would be especially useful), were suddenly happy and compliant with being an agent. It was needless to say that the team psychics really couldn’t give two f**ks about the livelihood of certain assets and would do whatever was necessary to get them to fall into line. That was how Akshay stayed ahead of the game, he knew how to play it and that was what Svetlana needed to do if she wanted to survive with her mind intact.
Noting that she finally took him up on the offer for lunch, a little less fight in her, she went ahead and started to put some food on her tray. Once it was collected, the pair of them turned and found an isolated, empty table where they could sit. Akshay slid into his seat with some difficulty, but he managed. Setting himself down, he sighed as he picked up his plastic spoon and scooped up a spoonful of the hot, steaming entrée.
>>"Do agents have communication privileges? Because honestly, I'm probably a missing persons case already..."
He munched on the hot, cheesy concoction for a second, covering his mouth as he sucked in and blew out air to help cool it. When it came to mac and cheese, the man was always impatient and tended to burn his tongue. Luckily it wasn’t too bad this time but it was still warm enough for him to have to cool it down.
Swallowing, he considered her question for a second before he sighed and stirred his mac and cheese a bit more so that it could evenly cool. ”That depends on how good you are.” He watched her. ”You have to think of it as employee perks. The better you do, the more you’re trusted, the better perks you get.” He shrugged. ”For example, I don’t live here. I live out in Brooklyn with my family. Only reason I’m here is because I’m healing and technically under quarantine for being in an entirely new environment. You…” he said, pointing his fork at her. ”Are an asset in ‘training’,” he said with finger quotations. ”You start complying, show them they can trust you, the more privileges you can get. And…” he took a second, unsure if he should say it but figured he should. ”…they won’t have to break out the big guns.”
From someone looking at them from a distance, they probably looked... normal. Two colleagues sharing lunch. Taking about work. And family. And totally not about escaping a facility that brainwashed mutants into submission. Sveta wondered how she always ended up in these situations, but the truth was, she knew exactly how: By having a power that was the mutant equivalent of hitting the jackpot. For others, anyway. She just hoped she could get a message out to Devon...
>>”That depends on how good you are. You have to think of it as employee perks. The better you do, the more you’re trusted, the better perks you get. For example, I don’t live here. I live out in Brooklyn with my family. Only reason I’m here is because I’m healing and technically under quarantine for being in an entirely new environment."
"Oooh. Cooties." Sveta pouted, wiggling her gloved fingers at him. So SUPER was worried about cross-contamination between worlds. Good to know. They did not care much when it came to kidnapping her, but at least they were careful about catching the sniffles...
>>"You… Are an asset in ‘training’. You start complying, show them they can trust you, the more privileges you can get. And… …they won’t have to break out the big guns.”
Sveta sighed, considering the perks for a moment.
"It can't be that easy, can it?" she raised an eyebrow "I mean, everyone would be playing the long game, if it was. What's the catch? Psychics? Human lie detectors? Killing someone to prove you're one of them now?"

>> "Oooh. Cooties."
He smirked. Probably for the first time since their encounter began. Honestly it wasn’t that farfetched. Given how universes evolved and changed, there could very well be bacteria and pathogens in her universe that didn’t exist here. But one would think after three weeks he would have been cleared. Just another example of how much a priority he was to SUPER.
It looked bleak. There was no denying that. Akshay could tell that these weren’t the words that Svetlana wanted to hear, but it was all he had for her. The truth was that she was lucky that they hadn’t already just broken her and started to build up again. Her power, from what he had read, was increasingly strong. They had boosters in their ranks before (as a matter of the fact, one of the bastards helped to cause this whole mess), but Svetlana made they all look like double A batteries; by comparison, she was a goddamn nuclear power plant.
Of course it made the agent wonder exactly why she hadn’t been already been set up for automatic re-education. SUPER had enough psychics in their ranks to make her believe she was a part of the cause all along and they couldn’t have to go through this mess. However, deep down, he knew that those things didn’t always hold, especially when someone was extremely strong-willed. Svetlana seemed like the strong-willed type and, honestly, it was better to convince someone rather than force them.
Svetlana sighed, deep in thought, before she raised her eyes to him again.
>> "It can't be that easy, can it? I mean, everyone would be playing the long game, if it was. What's the catch? Psychics? Human lie detectors? Killing someone to prove you're one of them now?"
Another bite of mac and cheese and he dabbed any excess off into his napkin. ”Wouldn’t be the government if it was easy…” he confirmed. ”…so…all of the above?” He let that hang in the air for a moment before continuing. ”SUPER is extremely interested in psychics. If they catch wind of one, they are automatically recruited; there’s not bothering with tagging, tracking, or any of it. Psychics are a valuable resource because of how strong and varied their abilities are.” He gestured towards her. ”Be glad you’re not one. We’d probably be having an entirely different conversation.”
>>”Wouldn’t be the government if it was easy… …so…all of the above?”
Sveta groaned, and stuffed some salad into her mouth. It made sense that whatever ridiculously villain-like scenarios she could come up with, SUPER was probably already doing a whole lot worse. Go figure. But at least they were getting somewhere now, with Akshay telling her useful things.

"Be glad. Sure." Sveta smirked, munching on her salad "Do you have any idea how many times I have been kidnapped in the past? Some crazy woman took my blood once. A guy that absorbed other people wanted to add me to his collection as a personal battery. I..." touched a guy and killed hundreds of people "... and a hot commodity, my friend." she sighed "And they will probably pair me up with someone whose powers need boosting. Someone who has enough grip on them that they don't go boom when I high five them... but also someone who is useful to them when scaled up. Probably a psychic, from the sound of it. Any guesses?"

It was strange how normal this felt. It was as if he were just chatting along with another agent, sitting in the cafeteria, trading war stories, advice, etc. But this wasn’t an everyday conversation, was it? He was under quarantine and she was being held because of how powerful she was. He didn’t know what the woman’s gift was when he met her. He felt the effects of her aura, but other than that, it was nothing that immediately drew concern. Even when she told him to be wary of them touching, it still didn’t click. Now, however, he understood and he knew just how valuable she would be to SUPER.
He spoke with her honestly, telling her about psychics. It wasn’t exactly hidden knowledge as it was part of the organizations agenda that all field agents must keep track of psychics. Just like adapteds, they were wanted in high quantity in the war against the mutant threat. Anything to give the organization any edge over whatever threats they may come across.
Though Sveta was powerful, she was lucky she was not one of those ranks. Psychics tended to get “special” treatment. However, it would seem that this was a state of being which the Russian had grown used to.
>> "Be glad. Sure…Do you have any idea how many times I have been kidnapped in the past? Some crazy woman took my blood once. A guy that absorbed other people wanted to add me to his collection as a personal battery. I... and a hot commodity, my friend. And they will probably pair me up with someone whose powers need boosting. Someone who has enough grip on them that they don't go boom when I high five them... but also someone who is useful to them when scaled up. Probably a psychic, from the sound of it. Any guesses?"
From her telling, it seemed that many times people have tried to use her for purposes similar to this. Whether as a lab rat or personal want, Svetlana was someone who was used to be captured and detained against her will. He snorted a bit. No wonder she had such a big attitude. He would make a smartass comment about how she should be used to this then, but it didn’t seem like the right time, especially when they were actually having a civil conversation.
She tried to guess about whom she would be paired up with and he shook his head. ”That’s not my department,” he admitted. ”Whomever it is probably will not be extremely powerful already because the last thing they’d want is an incident. So, you’re right, probably someone low level, who can maintain control. At first it would probably be an adapted, until you’re used to things and then find a mutant who could use a field boost.” He turned to his Jell-O. ”Definitely won’t be me, considering what happened the last time I got near someone like you.”
There were more factors than just being near a booster that had caused all of this. There was a time manipulator as well. Spacetime, upped to the nth degree, that would certainly have done something to physics. But, still, SUPER wasn't stupid. They would wait, they would keep him away from boosters until they were sure. They were nothing if not meticulous.
If she was going to do this, or even pretend that she was going along with any of it, Sveta needed to know what her options were. She needed to set a goal, in case Haven did not come busting through the doors anytime soon, and then she needed to work her *ss off to make sure she got the perks that allowed her to escape. And have contingencies. Mostly because of psychics. If her head got scrambled, Noel would have one hell of a time setting her straight.
>> ”That’s not my department. Whomever it is probably will not be extremely powerful already because the last thing they’d want is an incident. So, you’re right, probably someone low level, who can maintain control. At first it would probably be an adapted, until you’re used to things and then find a mutant who could use a field boost.”
Sveta nodded. Adapted, sure, although not for long. She was not useful that way, at all, even with her considerable hand-to-hand experience. But they also needed to pick her partners carefully. She was not sure how much suit guy knew about how her powers worked, but if they figured out the haywire part, they needed to be extra careful.
>>”Definitely won’t be me, considering what happened the last time I got near someone like you.”
"Why?" Sveta smirked "What's one portal more or less in the fabric of reality?... Maybe there's a dimension where you're actually a good guy."
Other Akshay had been nice, but definitely not hero material. Still, the train of thought led Sveta somewhere else.
"... do you think they are looking for my copy on this side too? On the off chance she has the same power?"

He probably should be saying as much as he was but, really, what was Svetlana going to do with any of it. If she decided that he wasn’t trustworthy, then nothing would come of it and she would be broken anyways. If she did listen, well, then she would be able to survive longer than most people in this place. That was really all this was, a test in survival, a test to see who was worthy of keeping themselves as they were, rather than hollowed out, broken, and rebuilt in whatever manner that SUPER saw fit. Really none of this had any bearing on Akshay himself, but it totally rested on the shoulders of Svetlana and how she wanted this to go.
A spoon full of Jell-O in his mouth, he smooth his hair back out of his eyes as he watched Svetlana have her lunch (or was it dinner by this point?). He could see those mental wheels churning, trying to solve this problem, trying to understand her options and where she fit in this world. This was going to be a pivotal point for her. He had no idea what she would decide to do but, whatever it was, now as the time for her to decide.
Describing what he knew of the process of pairing up, he mentioned that any of candidate would have to be less powerful. Given his own circumstances, it more than likely would not have been himself.
>> "Why? What's one portal more or less in the fabric of reality?... Maybe there's a dimension where you're actually a good guy."
He scoffed. ”You almost sound disappointed it’s not me,” he said with a sarcastic smirk. He then shook his head at the mention that there was a universe where he was good. ”So I guess the guy you mistook me for doesn’t count? The movie producer?” A sigh. ”Maybe aside from the differences, some things are just meant to remain consistent.”
>>"... do you think they are looking for my copy on this side too? On the off chance she has the same power?"
He stopped and looked at her. It was true, in SUPER’s investigation is seemed that there were a lot of cases where people seemed to have doubleds. However, these doubles were not always exact. Some were different ethnicities, some were different genders, and in the case of mutants, some didn’t even have the same powers. It was an intriguing prospect, yes, and he wasn’t going to lie and tell to her now.
”Probably,” he admitted. ”You’re gifts are strong. If there is a chance that there is a double of you running around in our world, they would investigate. Can’t risk an asset like that falling into the wrong hands.” He shook his head. ”Luckily they don’t seem to want anything to do with mine.” He shrugged. ”But who knows. Maybe your double will have hit the jackpot and been born human.”
>> ”You almost sound disappointed it’s not me. So I guess the guy you mistook me for doesn’t count? The movie producer?... Maybe aside from the differences, some things are just meant to remain consistent.”
"He's a sweet guy, but not exactly hero material." Sveta chuckled. This strange banter, despite the seriousness of the situation they were both in - the situation he had dragged her into - was actually helping her mood a little. Not that she would admit it. Akshay was definitely a jerk, but at least not in a way the suit guy had been. More... sincere. Hopefully. "I do miss the comic shop, though."
All the talk about doppelgangers made Sveta think that maybe she had one over here too. And made her wonder if SUPER had already tried to track them down.
>>”Probably. You’re gifts are strong. If there is a chance that there is a double of you running around in our world, they would investigate. Can’t risk an asset like that falling into the wrong hands. Luckily they don’t seem to want anything to do with mine. But who knows. Maybe your double will have hit the jackpot and been born human.”
"Maybe." Sveta sighed "Although if their life is a copy of mine, it is more likely dey are dead, in jail, or happily married to an American billionaire." she smirked. Not a lot of chance for the latter, but there had to be a dimension where the marriage thing worked out as intended...

>> "He's a sweet guy, but not exactly hero material...I do miss the comic shop, though."
Akshay snorted. He didn’t say anything though as he didn’t want to badmouth his counterpart in front of the blonde. Truth is that one of his fellow agents, an actual friend of his, had dug into some of the records of the other world. SUPER was trying to see what doubles were like and if everyone had them. Some did, some didn’t, but he had managed to dig up more information on the Akshay Malik from Svetlana’s world.
He started off as some freelance comic artist who went on to own his own comic shop. From there he continued to gain popularity with his comic series before some movie producers wanted to turn it into a feature film. Akshay agreed, but only with the circumstance that he write the script himself. He did and the movie turned out to be such a success that it absolutely launched his career into the stratosphere. He was a public figure now and, therefore, useless to SUPER. Added to that the fact that his mutation was in no way useful to the organization and he’s free to live his life.
Akshay (from this universe) was unsure how he felt about all that. As much as he respected SUPER, he almost was a little jealous that Other!Akshay got way from this life. What if he had just owned a comic shop? Would he and Bruce be together? Would his life be quieter? Would he actually be happy? The questions hurt his head to try and figure out so he just sighed and went back to his dessert.
>>"Maybe…Although if their life is a copy of mine, it is more likely dey are dead, in jail, or happily married to an American billionaire."
He smirked as he lifted his eyes to her again. She seemed to be loosening up, finally, and even if it were only for a moment it was something that the agent would hang onto. He nodded his head as he slurped up a cube of wiggly Jello. ”Well at least the later of those options doesn’t sound like the worst fate.” He eyed her curiously. ”When we first met you said you were almost married to someone. Same scenario?”
Sveta was not sure why they were even in the sharing mood. They were trapped in here together, one way or another, so it kind of made sense that they were bonding, but still, Sveta had never really been the chatty-feelsy kind. Maybe the loneliness was getting to her, after three weeks? Akshay could be useful to her at some point, she told herself. If he was not going to teleport her out of here, at least he could maybe take a message. Eventually. For now, they were merely passing the time...
>>”Well at least the later of those options doesn’t sound like the worst fate. When we first met you said you were almost married to someone. Same scenario?”
"Yeah" Sveta admitted with a shrug; this, at least, was not going to be useful for SUPER, and she was done making it a big deal when no one else did "I was vat you call a mail order bride. Except, it turned out, de guy did not order me. His mom did. It was... false advertising on both sides." she grinned "Still, it got me to America. And that's how I found out about my powers. He was a mutant too. Almost burned my face off."

Akshay really did have to marvel at just how easily the two of them were able to converse. Given how they met, and Sveta’s earlier attitude towards him, it seemed to be a rather drastic change of pace. After all, she was essentially a prisoner here until she learned to comply. That was how SUPER worked, that was how they broke people, by making them conform until they were deemed ready to be out in the field. Unless you joined willingly, it was going to be a tough time. Svetlana was in for a tough time indeed, especially given the fact that her powers could be more than useful to the organization.
Still, despite all of it, the two of them managed to find a space in order to be civil with one another. They ate, they talked, they shared, and to Akshay it was a state of being that he wasn’t all together used to anymore. There were few people whom he interacted with at SUPER who were actually considered friends. The majority were just colleagues, most of which who treated him as if he were the creep that Svetlana kept referring to him earlier. Honestly that doesn’t do well for one’s self-esteem.
It was no wonder that he’d rather be alone.
>> "Yeah…I was vat you call a mail order bride. Except, it turned out, de guy did not order me. His mom did. It was... false advertising on both sides."
He smirked. ”That’s actually rather funny,” he said with a sigh. The idea that Svetlana was a mail order bride, come to America at the promise of some millionaire, only for it to turn out to be a ploy set up by the husband’s mother. Given where he found the woman, it was clear that she wasn’t on the high end of the financial spectrum. ”But I guess it’s better that he didn’t turn out to be a psychopath that wanted to turn you into stew.”
He shuddered at that thought, mainly because it was something that had actually happened. There was a mutant that SUPER had to put down who was making long distance relationships but he turned out to be a serial killer. A crazed man who believed he could gain power from devour others. They were a rather sick individual, one who needed to be put down as he was of use to no one. Still, that was a point that Svetlana didn’t need to know.
>>"Still, it got me to America. And that's how I found out about my powers. He was a mutant too. Almost burned my face off."
His eyebrows lifted. He scooped in another wiggly piece of Jell-O into his mouth and chewed. He smirked a little as he gestured towards her face. ”Certainly glad that was avoided. It would have been a tragedy to mar such a face.”
Akshay looked a little amused at the part where both Sveta and her prospective husband pretended to be someone, or something, else before she arrived in the USA. Or, technically, his mother did, but that did not make the story any less funny. She rolled her eyes, admitting the situation. It was a long time ago. She had not even seen the guy in ages. He probably left the country or something...
>>”That’s actually rather funny. But I guess it’s better that he didn’t turn out to be a psychopath that wanted to turn you into stew.”
Yeah. Sveta had seen a few psychos in her life, but her fake fiancé was definitely not one of them. She smiled a little
"He was a nice guy, actually. Not rich or anything, but nice. Acid saliva, though... It was not meant to me."
With someone whose power revolved around kissing, she would not have lasted long in that relationship anyway.
>>”Certainly glad that was avoided. It would have been a tragedy to mar such a face.”
"Ooooh. The other Akshay wants to be this smooth when he grows up." Sveta snorted. It was especially funny, since she was definitely not this Akshay's type. In so many ways.
"So... you have a kid?"

>> "He was a nice guy, actually. Not rich or anything, but nice. Acid saliva, though... It was not meant to me."
Akshay nodded. ”Yeah, that certainly doesn’t seem like a scenario for you,” He agreed. He was about to congratulate her on getting out but he stopped himself. Honestly he felt like she would have taken it the wrong way or that it would have put her on a path that she really shouldn’t be on, not after they were finally making some friendly headway. So, he stopped himself and instead popped in another cube of Jell-O into his mouth.
Still, he couldn’t help but pay the woman a compliment. While, yes, he did prefer the company of men, he did acknowledge when a woman was particularly beautiful. Svetlana was a beautiful woman and certainly someone who had been blessed with such gifts. It would have been a shame if they had been marred thanks to the a mutant’s inability to control his powers so he voiced how tragic it would have been had that fate been unavoidable.
She snorted.
>>"Ooooh. The other Akshay wants to be this smooth when he grows up."
Akshay chuckled and shook his head. From her description of him, the other Akshay definitely seemed like a bit of a nerd. Still, with the career that he was creating for himself, he couldn’t help but be a little surprised and, maybe, a little jealous.
”Hah. Well, with how well Mr. Movie Producer is doing now,” he said with a scoff. ”I’m sure he doesn’t need cheesy pick-up lines. Probably has his pick of all the up and coming young actresses trying to make it in world.” He totally wasn’t cynical.
A paused descend upon them. Akshay toyed around with the last of the Jell-O in his cup but stopped when Svetlana raised her gaze to him again. She clearly had more on her mind so he gave her an expectant look, waiting for her to finish.
>>So... you have a kid?"
He licked his lips, taking a deep breath as he kept poking around at his dessert, smirking a little as he thought about his little boy and the life that he and Bruce had built together. He should have felt bad thinking about them, especially considering how many times Akshay found himself in an unknown bed with a stranger sleeping next to him. And yet, despite that, he loved his son and his husband – clearly he had issues.
He gulped and nodded. ”Maddox,” he said with a smirk. ”He’s five.” Another beat. ”Bruce and I adopted him about two years after we got married.” He then grinned, his eyes getting a little distant. ”I remember him telling me that when he grew up, he wanted to be a speedboat.” A chuckle as he covered his face with his hand and shook his head. ”Needless to say Bruce and I were both a bit perplexed.” A snort. ”Still are with that kid sometimes.”
>>”Hah. Well, with how well Mr. Movie Producer is doing now. I’m sure he doesn’t need cheesy pick-up lines. Probably has his pick of all the up and coming young actresses trying to make it in world.”
Sveta was having a hard time trying to imagine Akshay living the glamorous life of Hollywood, surrounded by hot young actresses. Chances were, he was still a nerd, absorbed in the great stories he had to tell on the screen, and probably still tripping over himself when interacting with a woman he liked. Sveta found that the more time she spent with Stalker, the more she thought about his nicer, non-lethal counterpart in the other dimension. It was good that SUPER did not care about him at all.
The conversation moved on to Akshay's family. If Sveta was having a hard time imagining Producer Akshay dating, she was having an either harder time reconciling the family man she'd seen in the picture with the cynical agent she was having lunch with. Especially the kid. Being a dad and also hunting down mutants... that was strange, to say the least.
>>”Maddox. He’s five. Bruce and I adopted him about two years after we got married. I remember him telling me that when he grew up, he wanted to be a speedboat... Needless to say Bruce and I were both a bit perplexed. Still are with that kid sometimes.”
"Well, maybe his mutant power will be turning into a speed boat." Sveta smirked. Sure, the kid was adopted, and there was no guarantee about mutant parentage anyway, but it was funny to think about. Sveta only realized after the fact that her comment might have come off as passive-aggressive; Stalker having a mutant kid would have been a problem, from SUPER's perspective, she assumed, although she was not sure if kids being exempt was included in the perks of the job or not. She sighed. "He sounds like a nice kid."
