The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

For Maria, y'know. She can go anywhere in the city (she has a car, is happy to walk, is capable of getting lost, can and does drink, enjoys wandering, shops... pretty much everything) and she loves doing... stuff. With people, mostly, but not necessarily. She's pro-people, will pick mutants over humans if she has to but individuals are more important, has a brother that people may or may not hate, and is willing to chum up with the most dangerous people around.
Hm.... would Ashton be interested in a night on the town? Maria's totally up for meeting complete strangers in adult-only establishments, and she's new enough to the city to want to try them all
Clearly Maria must notice something mysterious and go wandering into an alley, then. Would you like to be the mysterious thing, or shall she just find something mysterious? (Either way, limited postiness from me until Friday evening)
Ashton can always do the cop thing. Either to help if Sylar's being bad, or to think Sylar's being bad when he's being friendly. Or for various other reasons one might need a cop. Could also just run into her while he's having a brew at a bar with friends and someone could misunderstand something. Maybe one of his friends sends her a beer, and she thinks it's from Ashton, and Ashton has to deal with that.
Or she could get mugged. Or be on the scene when a mutant is making trouble in new york and we need the megazord. Anything, really.
I really do want some interaction with a police officer and Sylar, his history and biography should make him a seriously wanted burger/mugger lol. Especially since Evelyn already used up his "saved a lost little girl" card to save him once.
And yeah, Sylar generally creates situations where people poke their noses in and regret it when the strange alien monster drops down from the darkness or roof tops. :3
