Power Growth & Mini Power Growth Templates

There are two ways your characters can grow in strength and power on this site. For Mutants, a standard Power Growth allows you to gain a new ability that is related to the abilities your character already has, while a Mini Power Growth merely makes an existing ability stronger. For Mystics, a standard Power Growth grants them a level in a school of magic to either upgrade one they already have or branch out into a new school. Their Mini Power Growths are about taking a single spell of any level from any school of magic, allowing them to diversify their talents even more.

REQUIREMENTS

Mini Power Growth Requirements:

• Is this for a power you already have?

• Have you made 150 posts between creation or last full power growth?

• Have you been active for the previous full month?

• If you were inactive before (four months or longer without a post), have you made at least 50 posts since your return?

Power Growths FAQ:

Q. I want to change my character’s range/weight limit/etc or remove a weakness: is that a power growth?

Technically yes: in practice, no. Very small changes may not be treated like actual power growths. Significant changes to limits may require you to wait for a Mini Power Growth.

Please keep in mind that changing ranges/etc or removing a weaknesses also changes your character’s overall strengths-weaknesses balance: as such, if we think your character is getting too powerful, the Mod Team may deny/defer your request, or ask for other weaknesses to be put on to replace the ones you’re lifting.

Q. Is my idea just a creative use of my power, or an actual power growth?

 A “creative use” is an ability you are already approved to use, given your current power description. You don’t need to update the section even by so much as a word in order to use the ability: it’s just a novel application of what you’ve already got.

When the Mods judge whether a character is having a power growth or is just being creative, a few other factors come into play as well. If a character suddenly gains a new power application without any IC lead up or thought, if they learn to control it preternaturally fast, or if the new power usage raises them to a distinctly higher level of overall strength, the Mods are likely to view it as a power growth.

For example: let’s say a wind elemental is approved to lift 150 lbs and move it around using his ability. No flight ability is mentioned on the profile, but the character himself weighs about 140 lbs. Suddenly, the character starts lifting himself around in threads, thus gaining flight. It makes sense, but it’s a very large and very sudden leap in his overall power: the Mods are likely to view it as an unapproved power growth, and ask for the player to apply for it through the proper channels.

On the other hand, if the character takes a few months and multiple threads to gradually learn how to apply his current abilities towards flight, we’d likely let him continue merrily along without any profile updating or formal power growth requests: he’s technically approved to do that already, after all, and the manner he’s handling it IC makes both the usage and the time he takes to learn it realistic. Likewise, if the same player had emailed us with a “hey, can I start training IC so my character can fly?” we’d be likely to approve it without considering it a formal growth, and give the player cookies for asking us first.

If you’re unsure how the Mods would view your own idea, don’t hesitate to run it by the <MutantRevolver@gmail.com> account. Include your idea, the reason you view it as a creative use rather than a power growth, and your tentative IC timeline for developing it. If we agree with you, your idea will not be treated as a power growth. If we don’t, the worst that can happen is you have to formally apply for it.
