The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

All Good Things Come to an End and You Were The Best (Quin)
It was not a good week. Things with Natalie were not good and Nate was trying to wrap his head around the problem. They agreed when things began that they should stay light and casual. There was no reason for anyone to think light and casual meant exclusive; hell, it made it easier when she was not the only thing on his mind. He was fine with it; he had accepted it. Of course, Natalie made it clear the rules did not work for her and retroactively blamed Nate for following the new rules.
That woman could be truly maddening.
And so, Nate and Nat were done and Nate was probably better off forgetting what they had, whatever that was. Things were already messy and if they complicated them further, Norah would suffer for it. Maybe she already was.
Nate could not spend his time thinking about what went wrong with Natalie. Things there were complicated, but he had someone he could return to who was not.
Quin and Nate both had challenging, trying years and they knew each other well enough to be there to make things easier. There was comfort in being with someone who made it feel like you existed outside of the world and away from your problems. Nate was heading to Quin’s apartment because he enjoyed their time together and, while he was with her, he could set aside all the voices in his head for a while.
As with many of his visits, Nate came with offerings; specifically, a bag full of Chinese takeout. Quin might not have been a cop anymore, but she kept some of the eating habits. He knocked on the door with a grin. ”Hey Quin! I’ve come bearing sodium-heavy gifts!”
This...had been a pretty good week. It was almost weird for Quin to think that way after the horrible turn things had taken for a short while, but the world had righted itself somewhat and Quin was back on her feet almost as quickly as she'd been knocked off of them.
It was strange setting up an office that wasn't in a room full of other investigators, and it was weird having a case docket that didn't have to be approved by someone before she could get to work. Detailed expense reports had to be kept, of course, and work was constantly getting done...there was just a sense of freedom that went along with it that Quin had never experience in her adult life. It was showing. Her apartment was practically spotless, the clutter that had accumulated itself while she'd thrown herself into trying to prove that she belonged in the NYPD sorted and put into spaces where it actually belonged. The huge evidence wall had slowly moved itself out of Quin's living space and into the new work space she was establishing. There had been plenty of space and it had just seemed more appropriate to keep work at work.
There was actually a table...which was good because Nate was coming over. With food. Bad food that was oh so good.
The knock came at the door, and Quin opened it with a smile.
"Wouldn't want to get too healthy." she said cheerily inhaling the mix of food smell and paper bag that always accompanied the most delightful of take-out. "Come on in, there's actually room on the table."
Nate did not wait long before the door opened to reveal a redhead and her lovely smile. After how badly things ended between them the first time, it was great to have that smile back in his life. Whatever they had going was fun and the perks were amazing in their own right, but more than the affection and intimacy, Nate was glad to have Quin’s support.
He gave her a kiss at the door and entered in, heading toward the table. ”Of course it isn’t too healthy. You ex-con ex-boyfriend is not supposed to be a good influence. It was in the rulebook,” he teased. If there was one thing he knew for a fact did not exist for them, it was a rulebook.
Nate started removing cartons of food from the bag, opening the one marked with “HsLM.” He took a moment to appreciate the scent of the house lo mein before digging around for the chopsticks. ”What a week,” he stated plainly, not looking to explain the problem as much as he wanted to just make clear how much he needed a night off from everything. ”How’s the new office and all that sexy autonomy and operational freedom? You’re welcome,” he added playfully. Technically, as a member of the Inner Echelon, Nate had some supervisory control over Quin’s operation, but he rarely used it. He allowed her a wide berth to do what she needed to get done unless a pressing matter required her services. She was her own woman leading her own investigations, as she was always meant to, free of BS department politics.

"Excellent." Quin said, actually rubbing her hands together as she made way for Nate to get into the apartment. As he began to set things out, Quin gathered some silverware from the kitchenette. Yes, they were eating out of paper boxes and ingesting a week's worth of sodium, but that didn't mean they needed to chomp on plastic forks loaded with BPA's as well.
What a week, huh? The way Nate said it sounded different from the way that Quin had been thinking about it before he had arrived. She was going to ask what kind of week he'd had, but Nate distracted her with talk of offices and autonomy. He also took credit, but that was alright, Quin really did owe him for the job.
"It's great, actually. I'm ready for anything that you guys throw my way, but I think I've made more headway in my old case in just this short time than I'd made in the whole time I'd worked on it before. It's absolutely amazing how much bureaucracy can mess up a good thing." At least that's how Quin liked to think about it at this point...it was better than thinking about the fact that she was technically breaking the law in a few different ways every time she went out on the street. Besides, her PI license would be issued soon, then almost everything would be on the up and up.
Snagging some food from the table and digging in with her fork (chopsticks weren't going to get the job done tonight) Quin plopped down into one of the chairs at the kitchen table and nodded towards Nate. Chances are he didn't really want to talk about what was up with him, but Quin knew him well enough to push at least a little before dropping the subject. "What about you? What have you been up to in your fancy office where you do...whatever it is you do."
Nate liked Quin’s apartment. His own place was still new and, while it was admittedly luxurious, it lacked the lived-in quality that made a place feel more like a home. The apartment also carried nostalgia; Nate’s original New York apartment was part of his past, so Quin’s place was one of the last places to bear so many of their good memories.
It was not exactly as it had been during their first go-around, however. The table was noticeably clean, as was the rest of the apartment. Gone was all the paperwork and evidence of Quin’s craft that often littered every surface and some of the walls in the space. Nate smirked at the realization while he added a packet of soy sauce to his lo mein. ”Look at this apartment; there are hardly any signs of detective work. It’s almost like a real, honest-to-god living space,” he teased.
Indeed, Quin was flourishing as a private investigator. She had freedom, the glimmer of a work-life balance, and a renewed sense of purpose. She was starting to see the truth; that sometimes, a lot of good could be done beyond the red tape of police work.
Grabbing her own dinner, Quin turned the tables on Nate and asked about how things were at work. She was probably trying to determine what was making Nate’s week so exasperating, and work was not a bad place to start. It was not exactly the problem, but then again, it was also not separate from the problem. ”Our grand scheming? Well, things with the Rip are finally calming down, but now we’re looking into certain… effects the AV Government might be having on our own government. Which is frustrating, but would be less frustrating if Nat wasn’t fighting me on damn near everything I propose in meetings.”
Okay, Nate felt his blood heating up at the challenging behavior of his colleague and now-ex-lover. Dating someone he worked with was always going to be a mistake, even if they were never really “dating.” Truthfully, Natalie fought him on almost any Haven-related issue at the best of times. He could deal with that. It was the way she was stonewalling him in the other aspects of their lives that bothered him. ”And it doesn’t help that she won’t even talk to me outside of—””
Nate caught himself. In the moment, he got riled up and his frustration started slipping out before he remembered who he was venting with. It was easy to vent to Quin, but she was still Quin. They were keeping things casual and Quin was aware that something was going on with Nat as well, but the last time Nate brought up another woman to someone he was being “casual” with, it put him in the situation he was in with Natalie. ”I’m sorry. It’s probably awkward bringing her up. It’s just… been an exhausting week, you know?” Nate was rarely frazzled, but it was all he seemed to be that week.

The rift.
This was something that Quin had honestly done her best to avoid thinking about since it had happened in the summer. The NYPD had done its level best to help with the situation, but it was one of those things that the government types, the costumed types, and apparently some level of Haven had taken over. That had been fine by Quin, she’d had her docket full of other things and hadn’t really wanted to be involved. The whole thing gave her the heebie jeebies. The rumors of life on the other side for mutant-kind weren’t the kinds of things you told around the campfire.
There was also the whole idea that if this AV world was an alternate version of their own world...there were alternate versions of people running around.
Ick. Quin could see how those simple facts could cause a stressful week. Add to that the fact that Nate was suggesting some spillover of policies….double ick. Add to that the business with Nora’s Mom...icks for everyone.
”I got a new office plant…it was a nightmare trying to find something that could thrive in my office with the light exposure and surrounding buildings.” she offered in commiseration, then smiled slightly to show she knew she was being a pain.
Was it weird to sit at one’s table and discuss girl-problems with someone you were also kind of seeing? It probably should have been weirder than it was, but Quin had fallen into such a comfortable pattern with Nate that she just couldn’t find it in herself to find fault with the situation. First and foremost, the two of them were friends.
As for the situation being awkward, the redhead shrugged.
”I mostly just feel bad that you seem to have a fetish for attaching yourself to...strong-willed...women.” Strong-willed was an understatement.
”I do know what you mean though.” she wasn’t going to press for details unless Nate wanted to give them. Part of what made what they had right now so great was the fact that their time together could often be an escape from all of the other stuff in life. Quin wasn’t opposed to discussing work...or personal problems...but since she wasn’t really having any, the ball wasn’t in her court.
”I have found, however, that there are few problems that good dumplings and good company can’t improve...at least a little.”
