The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

> “...I’ve built up a career for myself and others..."
He listed his political and social clout and even threw in Haven. Whatever Haven was, apparently she could live there which would be convenient if she was sure this was the sort of person she should let into her life in that much of a trusted capacity.
And then he got all embarrassed when she called him out on acting like a trustfund kid. She barked out a laugh and then regretted how it made her sore. Still...
"I'm sorry. You really don't have to justify your life to me." She was playfully apologetic. The whole thing just tickled her for some reason. He was bothered to have and act like he had what he had. It was like... like a turtle suddenly being bothered for having a shell.
"I was just pointing out that you're in a position of power and that comes through your tone and actions whether you meant for it to or not." Whereas Noel was very, very, very much not in a position of power. Heck. He had to realize that on some level, the money was there. Hadn't he mentioned spa and massages and the view?
"I'm not used to people listening to me like it means anything. I've worked in personal security, it's part of the job to be... unobtrusive." That wasn't self-deprecation. That was partly taking her identity from her work and partly a side-effect of sometimes losing her mind in the most literal sense.
Noel chewed her lip as the translation went through hoping that it was making this clear because she didn't want to ruin the conversation just for making an observation. He had a pretty good thing going, apparently. So, she invited him to tell her about it.

>> "I'm sorry. You really don't have to justify your life to me."
Devon grinned, hoping to show he appreciated her tone even if the translator didn’t carry that along.
>> "I was just pointing out that you're in a position of power and that comes through your tone and actions whether you meant for it to or not."
“If anything, I should justify how I’m making use of my life, especially if I am hoping to gain your trust,” Devon clarified. “I don’t want to sound like I’m giving orders, either way.” He was increasingly getting the feeling though that Noel was trying to judge him, whether she said or not. Considering at first she was trying to adapt to what she thought he wanted and then what her new life would have to be, it seemed logical to figure out what this so-called benefactor wanted. Her questions about him made sense.
Talking about previous jobs like running personal security seemed to echo that. She let things be as they, went with the flow, and tried to learn as she went. It spoke again of her overall lessons in survival. It was likely hard to argue a point when you didn’t remember anything previous to compare it against. How frustrating.
>> "Tell me about Haven."
Devon nodded, “Happy to do so. As I was putting together my business – which I like to keep separate – quite a few asked about how it would really server the charitable side of my activities. I explained I wanted to help build a unified group of people interested in charity. That took form in Haven. We encourage leaders through education and self-help, gather what resources we can through members and financial donations, to then build that into charitable and political activity, again usually represented in education or important societal matters like LGBT or mutant rights.”
He gestured around him, “So here we try to help people with their actual needs for treatment. Haven helps you grow and helps you keep investing outside yourself in others. Of course, there’s also a social aspect of it. We’ve got a members’ club to for parties and dancing and what not.” Devon chuckled, “Work hard, play hard sort of thing. We’ve got politicians, liberal technologists, active social activists, and the common man who volunteers a lot… They’re all represented in Haven. Some are even openly mutant like myself. I have a feeling you’d like working with Haven, but I want you to make that decision on your own. You may decide writing historical novels is enough.”
Devon grinned and shrugged again, “We’re trying to make this world a better place, and it can be hard work. I like helping people and bringing people together so between Hadden’s Havens and the Haven organization, I feel like we can really make some positive change.”

He kept business separate so Haven was personal. Noel tried to read between the lines of the translation as he excitedly went through his passion project.
Sheesh. She didn't consider him a child, but his goals sure seemed... naive. That made her sad, somehow. The world she saw was just so fundamentally different. Noel could imagine doing anything she could to let him stay in that little bubble— At least someone deserved to live in that delusion. —but that was often how she imagined herself: in a supporting role.
Leaders were the big picture people, charismatic and enthusiastic. Maybe he chose to see the good?
> "I have a feeling you’d like working with Haven, but I want you to make that decision on your own. You may decide writing historical novels is enough.”
"For writing historical information down, there's a finite pool of memories to pull from unless I catch up to another immortal. And if I tried right now, I have no idea what would come out." Certainly not English, if she could make her letters at all. "If I ingest memories to cheat my way to learning English, it might overwrite that portion of memory. That's unlikely, but possible."
Noel rubbed her eyes, bone crushingly weary of all of everything at this point.
"The more unique a memory is, the more likely I am to retain it. I'm not completely sure why. So, ancient China? I may have that forever unless I wipe it myself, but I honestly can't tell you anything about before... just before. Before living in New York, maybe."
Scars, no scars. Tattoos, no tattoos. Reality, not reality. Hair, wardrobe, job, boss, friends... Sometimes her timeline didn't make sense from her current perspective.
"The people in that facility were part of my before. They knew more about me than I do. I don't know if I can spare enough to care about the greater good and societal change. I can't see the greater picture because my perspective is always changing. I just want to be useful and do right where I can."
Please, God, let her be useful. She was sick and tired of being so helpless all the time.

Devon nodded slowly as she described how her memory ability worked. It was like a finitely slotted library. You could only have one set of memories for ‘learning english’ or ‘learning to swim.’ That was presumably quite frustrating for her. It said something of how the mind worked. He noted she seemed tired too.
Maybe she wanted to nap, but Devon had a feeling it was the topic that was weighing her down. How many times had she had to describe this? How many times had she gone through this? Could she even remember? That also made him wonder how much she actually retained subconsciously. Maybe she didn’t remember each memory but she might remember talking of or reviewing them. He also worried it wasn’t merely fatigue but depression. She was constantly losing part of herself.
Concerned about caring for greater good? Well when you were still worrying about yourself and your survival it was hard to help others. That was perfectly fair a sentiment. You had to take care of yourself, grow, before you could do anything for others. >> “…I just want to be useful and do right where I can."
“Mmm,” Devon nodded while making the affirmative sound. “You need to focus on you first, and that’s what this facility is all about. But it may be too sheltering? You seem quite competent to me, simply frequently stuck in bad positions from not-so-good people and then having to survive the situation.” He half-smiled apologetically. “My apologies for our initial approach here, though I think you understand why I did so.”
He gestured out over the water, “Hadden’s Havens are for taking care of you. What troubles you, what’s holding you back, what do you need to live a full, good life. The Haven organization is about continuing that and then growing outside yourself with others for others. Things aren’t so simple in the real world, as you know, and it takes hard work, money, changing opinions, and sometimes even more…” He let his voice fade slowly, eager to say more but it was clearly too soon.
“If you want to be useful and ‘do right’ where you can, then I truly feel you’d like working with Haven,” he nodded again. “But again, I want you to make that decision on your own. I think meeting some of my closer friends in Haven will give you a keener perspective and I think they’ll be happy to help you too.”
Mirth returned to his voice as he grinned, “But maybe right now we just go down to the beach?”

She felt crazy. Heck, she was pretty sure this might actually meet the definition of crazy: doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. She tried. She failed. She had to start over again.
She didn't want to start over again, but what options did she have? She certainly couldn't go back.
And then he had to go and needle the exact issue that bothered her most.
> "...You seem quite competent to me..."
Certainly not what the hospital said. Or the state. Or the courts. He just said it so baldly. Like it was obvious. Like she always felt it should have been. A lump formed in her throat that she had to swallow past.
Usually now was when she went for a run or found someone to fight. It was the best way to combat that crappy tugging sadness because both physical pursuits worked toward the fulfillment of a promise that she'd made long ago to herself.
She would not be helpless. Noel balled her fists.
She would get stronger. She would learn everything she could so that she could defend herself, keep herself safe.
But what Hadden was saying was that she didn't have to do that. And even if she did, Noel certainly didn't have to do it alone.
Her shoulders relaxed and in the same moment tears spilled over her lower lash line.
Maybe... she didn't.
> “But maybe right now we just go down to the beach?”
Noel breathed out a complicated laugh and wiped the few tears from her cheeks. "I'd like that."
