Character
Personality: Natalie’s main goals in life are to make something of herself and provide for her daughter, so those things come first in almost every situation. She’ll often have ulterior motives for her actions that she will choose not to share with anyone.
She was once ambition driven, but after achieving almost all her career goals, she’s been more focused on other things. There’s so much that isn’t understood in the universe and in society, so Natalie’s been focusing more on that. She sees herself as above others, especially those that are less intelligent than her, are human, or are less fortunate.
Around other people, Natalie tends to be guarded unless she knows them well. She can fake a smile and fake interest in almost any situation, but in reality, she’s rather self-absorbed, and wouldn’t particularly care about other people’s problems.
She’s incredibly protective of her daughter and will stay away from any situation that will have a negative consequence for children.
Her morals are somewhat loose, given her chosen profession. She’ll take a case based on whether it’s winnable, not whether she believes in it. She also applies this idea to the rest of her life. If something is beneficial to her, she’ll support it. She does not base decisions on any sort of moral code or higher power.
Hobbies/ Interests: Plays piano, works out, and occasionally knits. Was a competitive dancer in her youth. Most of her free time is spent doing stuff with her daughter or working.
Job or part time job and description: Attorney working at a New York firm.
Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Losing her daughter, large spiders, bats.
Special talents: Excellent pianist, convincing speaker, decent baker, can still dance moderately well.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Neutral. When things benefit her, Natalie will support them. She believes that the ends justify the means of situations, and won’t be opposed to swinging to either side of the good/evil scale.
Mutations
Mutation description: Illusion creationNatalie, in layman’s terms, is able to place an illusion over an area. There is no actual change in reality, only what is perceived by the people viewing the illusion.
The easiest illusions to create are those with some sort of base structure. I.e. changing the appearance of a chair or a piece of paper. She can create a larger or smaller illusion than the form of the base structure, but the original structure will be unchanged underneath.
She can create objects without any base structure, but if someone tried to touch them, there would be nothing there. For example, she could create a mug, if someone tried to pick it up, their hand would go straight through.
She can also create moving things, like people or creatures, but she will have to study the movements for some time before creating them, or they will appear awkward and unnatural. She also cannot create anything of substance or create sound or sentient beings, so they will just be an image that has to be controlled by her. She has to control all of their movements, so she has to maintain focus on them in order to sustain them. If her concentration is broken, the illusion will fade away.
It takes a great deal of concentration for Natalie to first put up an illusion. A typical illusion will take about a minute of constant concentration for her to create, and then she will have to continue focusing on it while it’s up. While concentrating, she can do other things, like have a surface-level conversation, or do repetitive tasks, but she will have to focus mostly on the illusion in order to keep it going.
For larger illusions and moving creations, it takes an average of one minute longer to create, and then she is forced to keep her full concentration on that illusion for the entire time that it’s up.
She has a range of about a 20 ft radius. She can put up any sort of illusion within that area, but if she or the object moves out of that range, the illusion will fade away. The larger the illusion within an area, the longer it will take for her to first put it up. She also cannot create illusions in areas that she cannot see, so she wouldn’t be able to create something on the other side of a wall or door.
Strengths:Natalie can cause anyone that falls in the radius of her power to see the illusion, or she can create illusions specific to a few people out of a group. She can choose who she wants to see an illusion when she first creates it.
Weaknesses and Limitations:If Natalie’s concentration is broken, the illusion will immediately stop.
Illusions have a maximum time limit of half an hour, and then she must wait ten minutes to recuperate until she can begin a new one. If the illusion lasts less than 20 minutes, she can begin a new illusion immediately. If the illusion lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, the time over the limit will equate to the time that it takes her to recharge. For example, 21 minutes = 1 minute to recharge, and so on.
Natalie’s powers are limited to a 20 ft radius around her, meaning that she cannot exceed this when creating illusions. She also cannot leave the space, or the illusion will disintegrate as soon as it is out of her range. If someone is standing outside of her range, the illusion will not be visible to them.
Setting up the illusions take a great deal of focus. While she is concentrating, she is entirely open to attack, especially those of psychic origin. Because she has to concentrate so hard, she is unable to defend herself.
If her concentration is interrupted while she’s attempting to set up an illusion, it will either become distorted, or she will be unable to complete it, depending on the length of her broken concentration.
She cannot alter sound, touch, smell, or taste.
If she tries to focus on more than five moving objects at once, or go farther than her range will allow, it will cause nosebleeds, headaches, and dizziness. If she keeps going after that, it will cause seizures.
She can either create an illusion for (a) select person(s) or for a group of people at one time. She cannot perform two illusions at the same time. She cannot alter who can see the illusion once it has been started. Natalie is always able to see the illusions she creates.
She cannot create an illusion based on something she has never seen.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Natalie is strong, as she likes to work out, but she’s not particularly fast. Her reflexes and general physical capabilities are about on par with anyone else in her age and weight bracket.
Fighting Style: She’s a talker, not a fighter. Natalie will either use her power or try to talk someone down. Violence would be her last resort, but if it came to it, she’d be inclined to use a gun or any other available weaponry to aid her.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons: She’s not very good in a physical fight, but in a battle of wits, the scales would be tipped in her favour.
History Of Your Character
Natalie was born to a wealthy family in one of the nicer areas of Chicago. She spent her entire childhood there, enjoying all the things that the world had to offer her. She received everything she wanted, and never had to worry about a thing. At school, she was popular and well-liked. An attractive, rich party girl who wasn’t particularly mean or particularly nice. She danced after school and on weekends, but still diligently completed all of her homework. The world laid itself at her feet.
When it was discovered that she was a mutant, not much changed. Her parents believed that mutants should have the same rights as humans, so they displayed that when raising their daughter. They took her to people that could tutor her and help her to use her powers effectively, and soon they became as much a part of her as anything else.
Natalie graduated with nearly top marks in her class and then chose to stay local for University. She attended the University of Chicago for political science and continued to live as she had in high school. She partied constantly and floundered around for a bit until one fateful night in her third year.
There was a guy. There was always a guy, wasn’t there? She met him at an art show that she attended with a few friends, and ended up spending the night with him. She never got a number or any other kind of contact information from him. All she knew was a name, which turned out to be a fake one.
Natalie found herself pregnant at 21. It was not the situation she’d planned to be in. She was a party girl who drank too much and stayed out too late. She was not fit to be a mother.
Her parents sent her packing after hearing the news but continued to support her financially. They still cared for her enough to make sure that her life was as cushy as possible, but they didn’t want their social reputations damaged.
So, Natalie took a year off of college, pulled her socks up, and had a baby: Norah Grace Ross. She let the experience harden her a little, and began to take on life with a newfound vigour. The next year, she finished her bachelor's and went straight to law school. She juggled a baby and her degree, and still managed to come out with excellent marks.
Soon enough, she was working as a junior attorney at a law firm in New York. However, junior attorney wasn’t enough for her. She wanted to be a partner. It was absolutely unheard of for someone of her age and relative lack of experience, so she evened the odds. She tormented her least favourite of the partners with illusions for weeks, eventually driving her to insanity. For the last two years, she has been a partner at the firm.

Sample RP:2015Natalie sat politely at her desk, watching three people trying to open the door to Maryanne Weston’s office. They’d been at it for twenty minutes with no avail. She’d locked it and barricaded herself inside with all the furniture she could find. Inside of the large space, screams could be heard. They were scratch, quick screams. The screams of a woman who’d been in her own personal hell for over two hours.
It had been a simple thing to orchestrate once she’d thought of it, really. For weeks she’d been quietly tormenting the woman; making her see things that she feared the most in the world. They had been trickier illusions that she was used to, but it was well worth the challenge. Her hard work felt especially good after seeing it all come to fruition.
Initially, she’d had no plans to move up that way in the office. She had fully expected to do it as anyone else would - through hard work and talent. However, months of constant berating from the cynical old crone had caused her to take another path.
The glass windows allowed people to see exactly what was going on in Maryanne’s office: a whole lot of nothing. It simply looked like a woman driven mad, probably by the stress of her life, huddled in the centre of her desk.
After a few more minutes, the three men had managed to push through the barrier and grab Maryanne. Natalie timed the end of the illusion to match perfectly with when they picked her up and took her out of the room. The woman’s screams died suddenly, and she shook violently as she was carried out of the building.
Nat’s mouth twisted slightly into a smirk. It had gone exactly as she’d intended it to. She glanced back at her computer, which was lacking words. She’d been concentrating so hard for the past while that she hadn’t actually gotten any work done. She glanced around and pulled up an old file as her boss passed by to make it look like she’d been busy.
She cleared her throat as her boss passed, trying to get his attention. He stopped and glanced at her, matching her half smile.
“Terrible thing that just happened. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help,” she said as sweetly as she could.
Jameson looked withered and tired, but he nodded gratefully. “That’s very kind, Natalie.” He then retreated back into his office and closed the door behind him.
Natalie took a deep breath and turned back around. She needed to get back to work now that her plan was in motion.
